I would like to thank you for joining the WikiProject. If you wish, could you please go back to the list of participants, and revise your listing there, by adding your signature? You can revise the date in your signature, to display the date that you actually joined.
Also, if you wish, could you please tell me which historical eras, or other historical topics that you are interested in? we would like to empower individual members, by enabling them to identify specific areas of interest.
if you wish to help out, you can do so any time, by interacting on the project's main talk page; you can comment simply to let us know what you've been up to, or you can join one of the existing discussion posts there. Just want to apologize because you were trying to get through to me in the debate on Carlton Mack and I wasn't listening. To be honest, trying to clean up Wikipedia and randomly patrol pages can be a little tricky because sometimes editors come out of the woodwork to debate how famous the topic is and it's a keep, etc. Anyways, if I make a mistake, I'm happy to correct it. In this case, I did make a mistake, and you were right, and I've withdrawn the nom. Thanks for taking the time and providing feedback. Megtetg34 ( talk) 01:57, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Port of Spain Gazette you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Willbb234 -- Willbb234 ( talk) 22:21, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
On 15 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Joachim Philip, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Joachim Philip delivered an ultimatum to the British in Grenada during Fédon's rebellion, the militia had to restrain his sister, Susannah, who otherwise would have "torn him to pieces"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Joachim Philip. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page ( here's how, Joachim Philip), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

The article Port of Spain Gazette you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Port of Spain Gazette for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. On 21 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Isaac Hope, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that although he was born in the United Kingdom, Isaac Hope was elected to represent Tobago on the Legislative Council of Trinidad and Tobago? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Isaac Hope. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page ( here's how, Isaac Hope), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.
Our top scorers in Round 2 were:
Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.
Your participation is welcome. Thank you. NightHeron ( talk) 22:40, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

I've reverted your decline of the speedy deletion request at Civic Voice; the redirect is impeding the publication of an article with that name. Hi Guettarda. I hope you are doing well and staying safe during these times! Apologize to bother and posting a random request. I have just started to work on a stub ( Fontainea Venosa)and had added some sections. I am trying my best to get the article to B class hopefully. Knowing your expertise, I would love if you can help me to review and left a comment on what I can do to improve my edits. I hope that this is okay, but no pressure if you are busy. That is completely fine and understandable :) Hope to hear from you soon. The article is Fontainea Venosa

A tag has been placed on Category:1961 disestablishments in Trinidad and Tobago indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Guettarda: Why are you censoring calls to violence, and history of violence, factual and true references in published, high-grade media sources, for your own biases? This is wrong. You will be addressed and given consequences for your false, biased censorship creating Lies by Omission. Potentially you may be found liable if/when the aforesaid party commits egregious violence against other citizens again. False Censorships will be posted to domestic terrorism government agencies for attempted False Censorship, Fabrication of False Evidence, et al. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iqacquire ( talk • contribs) 03:23, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Is this how I contact you? you undid my part on the pseudoscience page I can edit the mistakes I made in writing but I also did cite sources the problem is I do not yet know how to do that right I find it confusing but I know it will be pretty simple once I know how do I link for example a number to a part in the references? the citation was there but it wasn't linked properly.

This is to let you know that the National Union of Freedom Fighters article has been scheduled as today's featured article for July 12, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 12, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
It would be nice to have an image for this, but I can't see anything obvious that's free-to-use. If you think of something, the new format for TFA images is {{Main page image/TFA|image= |caption= <!-- if caption is the same as the title of article use only |title= --> }} We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:36, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
Thank you today for the article "about a revolutionary group in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s. Because most of their leadership was killed, their story was largely untold until after 2000. Hello, Guettarda. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, " Race".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia
mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply and remove the {{db-afc}}

, or {{db-g13}}
code.
If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.
Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Thank you for identifying and deleting a recent edit one of my students did on an article that was flagged for copyright violation. I sometimes see edits that appear to be plagiarism though do not know how to confirm this or even be alerted to this being the case so I can take steps to remove and continue educating on avoiding this problem. Are there tools to help automate identifying copyright violation that can be used, even in my own editing? I would welcome adding additional help to my editing and teaching toolbox. Our Champion this year is The Rambling Man ( submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:
All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.
If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition. Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. / Johan (WMF)

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Moin Guettarda,
in Michael Anthony: Port of Spain in a World at War 1939 - 1945, 2. edition, Paria Publishing, Port of Spain 1978, ISBN=976-8054-55-7
I stumbled across a small snippet of text that theoretically might be a starting point for an interesting biography article, but I couldn't find any follow-up information so far: "For (cyclist Ellis) Nottingham, the war had come to the Caribbean. Just an hour or so before the declaration of war, he had left Port of Spain for Curaçao to compete in games there. However, when the declaration came, the German ship on which he was travelling suddenly changed course and headed for Germany. Ellis was to spend six years in Hamburg as a prisoner of war.". I do have personal contacts I can ask (Jerry Besson, Brinsley Samaroo) but they're both not very Wikipedia affine (yet^^). Do you accidentally have any sources on the matter, or do you know an en:WP author who might know something about it?
Thanks and kind regards,

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is
During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.
Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:20, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 ( talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth ( talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! The Core Contest—Wikipedia's most exciting contest—will take place this year from April 15 to May 31. The goal: to improve vital or other core articles, with a focus on those in the worst state of disrepair. Editing can be done individually, but in the past groups have also successfully competed. There is £300 of prize money divided among editors who provide the "best additive encyclopedic value". Signups are open now. Cheers from the judges, Femke, Casliber, Aza24.

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:
Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and AirshipJungleman29.
So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

New contest!
|
This month has seen an incredible amount of activity creating high quality content, with 3 FAs, 3 FACs, and a veritable flood of GAs and GANs, not to mention the FLs and FLCs. To help maintain this high level of activity going forward, WikiProject Tree of Life is starting a new monthly rolling contest, inspired by the contest run by WikiProject Military History. This contest should hopefully help incentivize editors to contribute in ways that are less daunting than writing articles that are GA and FA-quality. Even improving articles from stub to start class, or helping other editors by reviewing their work at GAN, FAC, or FLC, gets you points, with bonus points for articles with especially high page views. Make sure to participate in any way you can, and help improve the 'pedia while having fun and winning Barnstars! |

The first edition of
our new monthly contest had perhaps a little less participation than I hoped for, but it still resulted in a huge amount of content work, mainly focussed on de-stubbing articles on little-known species, although we did also see two GAs for
Holozoa and
Hypericum perforatum. Overall, over 60 articles were improved, with most going from stubs or redlinks to fully fleshed out articles. The winner this month was
Simongraham, who improved 21 articles about spiders, mainly to B and C class, and racked up 70 points, over twice the next highest. Hopefully, we'll continue to see such great work next month, with even more participants and even more articles improved.

The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. After all this hard work, BeanieFan11 has emerged as the 2023 winner and the WikiCup Champion. The finalists this year were:-
Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the competition, some of whom did very well. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Hi, Ian. I wanted to share something with you about a shared references project that I've been working on for a little while. At the end of this message, I'll have a question which you might be uniquely placed to help with. This project is not yet ready for prime-time, but it involves an idea I have of extending the concept of shared, named references by generalizing it to allow sharing the same citation across different articles via a repository of common, reusable references, which I call a "reference library" (or, "ref lib", for short).
If workable, I think there would be plenty of advantages to this idea: it would go a long way towards promoting Verifiability by allowing those editors with strong citation writing skills to create libraries of citations in Wikipedia citation template format of high-quality sources, all properly filled out, and expose them to everyone, so that other editors could just pick them up at a central location, instead of having to reinvent the wheel, finding or recreating the same citations for different articles in the same topic area. Editors with less developed citation-writing skills (or unable or unwilling to create or hunt them down) could just grab citations ready-made from the reference library about their topic. There would be plenty of other benefits, not least of which is bringing quality citations to the attention of editors who didn't know about them (sort of like browsing the stacks at a library), as well as saving the project collectively a lot of time: when I work on a new article, hunting down references and writing the citations for them is a big part of it (40% of time spent, perhaps?). Wouldn't it be great to just be able to find great citations for sterling sources pre-made and pre-vetted at a specified location, containing a reference library already populated with numerous high-quality citations all ready to go?
That's the elevator pitch, and my prototype is at {{ Reflib}}. The template currently powers libraries in three article domains: Ancient seafaring, French criminal law, and Vichy France, so you don't actually have to copy any citations out of the library to your article (although you could do that, too), you just transclude them by name via the template. About a dozen articles currently source citations from the three ref libs currently. To see some examples of articles currently using Reflib, look at the "Works cited" section of Ships of ancient Rome, or Glossary of French criminal law. I'd like to increase the number of ref libs to about a dozen libraries before bringing this to VPM or some central location, and my question for you relates to finding new topic areas that would be a good fit for a ref lib.
I thought you would be an ideal person to ask, based on your experience over a wide number of topics because of your experience with Wiki Ed. A good topic area, would be one undergoing growth (new articles or expanded articles), or expected to grow, in which the new or expanded articles are likely to have overlapping references that could be reused in two or more articles belonging to the topic. An ideal topic area, would be one which already has a couple of good "anchor articles" which are full of references, but is "missing" lots of potential new articles (lots of redlinks is a good sign). (Think by analogy, of a new mall with a couple of "anchor stores" open, but with most of the smaller boutique-y mall stores still empty and being set up.) A nav template with lots of red links (like {{ French criminal law}} ) is a strong indicator that there is a topic area undergoing expansion, or in need of expansion, and that might be a good fit for Reflib. (That topic area became the first ref lib.)
(By contrast, a poor topic area might be one that is very mature, with little activity going on. Even in this case, a ref lib could be set up and the articles retrofitted to use {{ Reflib}}, but if everything is already cited and working and there's little going on in the area, there's no particular time-saving or ref-expansion benefit to be had. Another poor topic area for Reflib, would be one where all the articles in the topic area, even if related, hardly ever share any references; Covid developments by country might be an example, where the references would be newspapers from different countries, maybe with a few shared UN or CDC links, but mostly completely disjoint sets of newspaper or journal citations.)
I hope I haven't completely snowed you under hitting you with this out of the blue, but I'm excited about this topic, and I think it could bring great productivity and verifiability benefits to Wikipedia if widely adopted, and I'm eager to expand the number of reference libraries and thought you could point me to some good topic areas I might look at. If some Wiki Ed courses are looking to create or expand articles in some topic area, that might be a good fit. Anyway, let me know what you think in general about the idea, and also if you can point me to some new topic areas that could benefit from a new ref lib. Thanks, Mathglot ( talk) 04:58, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

And so ends the fourth edition of the monthly rolling contest, as well as the 2023 Tree of Life Contest as a whole. This month saw simongraham win with a very impressive 120 points from 27 articles. Quetzal1964 was second with 74 points from 37 articles. The annual contest was a close race between simongraham and Quetzal1964; simongraham won first place with 256 points from 64 articles, and Quetzal1964 was second with 250 points from 146 articles. Snoteleks was third with 79 points from 33 articles. Congratulations to everyone who won this year and my gratitude to everyone else who helped raise the quality of articles in our little corner of Wikipedia this year. Additionally, a very Happy New Year to everyone in the project and here's looking forward to continuing our good work in 2024! |

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2023).
Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,
As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.
Highlights of 2023:
Acknowledging Challenges:
While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.
Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:
As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.
Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.
Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!
Warm regards, User:Ainali, User:Daniel Mietchen
PS. We have started writing our yearly report, please add your activities to it.

Hello! Your submission of Tariq Abdul Haqq at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there at your earliest convenience. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset ( talk) 05:35, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.
Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima ( submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges ( Cwmhiraeth ( talk · contribs), Epicgenius ( talk · contribs), and Frostly ( talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV ( submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! The Core Contest—Wikipedia's most exciting contest—returns again this year from April 15 to May 31. – Aza24 (talk) 02:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Our current top scorers are as follows:
Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May.

Knowing your expertise, I would love if you can help me to review and left a comment on what I can do to improve my edits. I hope that this is okay, but no pressure if you are busy.

Thank you again. --- FULBERT ( talk) 11:39, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax!
Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2022 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. Any questions on the rules or on anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 14:36, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Good luck! in Michael Anthony: Port of Spain in a World at War 1939 - 1945, 2. edition, Paria Publishing, Port of Spain 1978, ISBN=976-8054-55-7

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs!

The second edition of our monthly contest was even better than the last month, with 80 articles improved spanning the entire tree of life. The winner this month was Quetzal1964, who contributed to 47 articles, mainly relating to marine fish, and racked up 81 points in the process. In second place was simongraham, who got 60 points from 14 articles on various species of jumping spiders. simongraham is still at the top of our overall standings, with 130 points, and Quetzal1964's close behind on 108. The November edition of the contest is now open: feel free to drop by and participate if you work on any TOL-related articles this month. |

Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.
The WikiCup has run every year since 2007. With the 2023 contest now concluded, I will be standing down as a judge due to real life commitments, so I hope that another editor will take over running the competition. Please get in touch if you are interested. Next year's competition will hopefully begin on 1 January 2024. You are invited to sign up to participate in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors. It only remains to congratulate our worthy winners once again and thank all participants for their involvement!

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
