Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, - Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC) reply

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. / Johan (WMF)

Commons linking

@ Howcheng: I'm getting ready to move User:Maile66/Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area to Main Space. If I do a Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area search on Commons, it comes up with 144 images. https://commons.wikimedia.org/?title=Special:MediaSearch&search=Merrimac+Farm+Wildlife+Management+Area&fulltext=Search&type=image

However, there is no Commons category by that name to do a single link. Without editing each image category link, is there a way to easily amass these images under a new Commons category for Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area? — Maile ( talk) 13:01, 3 March 2022 (UTC) reply

Not really. Your best bet is to use something like WP:AWB (if you are running Windows) so you can plow through all the images really quickly. howcheng { chat} 18:23, 3 March 2022 (UTC). reply

Replaceable fair use File:Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement cover.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{ Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Bambi vs Godzilla - G12

Hi there. I see you recently deleted Bambi vs. Godzilla as a G12 - this has left various missing redirects that need to be cleaned up. Before starting, I'd like to confirm that the deleted article was not about David Mamet's book. If it was, then I'd like to make an attempt at recovering something from it, but speedy deletions aren't eligible for WP:REFUND. If it wasn't, then I'll recreate the original redirect to Mamet's article and flag it as "with possibilities" as it was previously. Tevildo ( talk) 20:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC) reply

FYI, it was listed at Candidates for Deletion. For your convenience, I have undeleted my action for you: Bambi vs. Godzilla The first sentence says, "Bambi vs. Godzilla: On the Nature, Purpose, and Practice of the Movie Business was a book written by playwright David Mamet and published by Vintage Books in February 2008." — Maile ( talk) 20:59, 23 November 2023 (UTC) reply
Thanks! I think the article, as it stood before deletion, is better off as a paragraph under David Mamet#Books, with the redirects restored to that section. If more material about the book becomes available, a split can be proposed. Unless there's any obvious reason against this course of action, I'll make a start on it tomorrow. Tevildo ( talk) 21:15, 23 November 2023 (UTC) reply
Thanks for following up here on my talk page. My deletions come from tagged and nominated listings at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. I don't independently decide what gets deleted. Hi Maile66. I noticed that you deleted a redirect left from a disruptive move to NTT (disambigation) per WP:G7, which isn't in accordance with this criterion: For redirects created as a result of a page move, the mover must also have been the only substantive contributor to the pages before the move. Unfortunately, I was also cheated and requested a WP:G14 nomination of NTT (disambiguation). Could you restore all the revisions before its deletion? Thanks, NmWTfs85lXusaybq ( talk) 01:27, 27 February 2024 (UTC) reply

This one is a little confusing to me. I just reverted my delete. Did this work for you? If not, please advise how I shoud do it. — Maile ( talk) 01:38, 27 February 2024 (UTC) reply
Sorry, I didn't state it clearly. I was asking for deleting NTT (disambiguation) and restoring all the revisions before its first deletion. NTT (disambigation) should have been reverted to NTT without leaving a redirect at the first time because of the misspelling "disambigation" in its title. NmWTfs85lXusaybq ( talk) 02:09, 27 February 2024 (UTC) reply

I've undeleted it for you. It was listed at Template:Admin dashboard under Candidates for speedy deletion. As you can see, there is a Speedy deletion tag on it. Looking at the history of the nominator's page, it looks like that IP nominator also put a notice message on your talk page about it Anything else I need to do about this? — Maile ( talk) 23:05, 23 February 2024 (UTC) reply
Thanks, No, I think an RFD is the way to go. Graeme Bartlett ( talk) 02:54, 24 February 2024 (UTC) reply

There's probably a way to easily do this. But I don't want to botch it for you, so I've left a message at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Delete-Undelete assistance requested. — Maile ( talk) 03:06, 27 February 2024 (UTC) reply
