Welcome to the 41st edition of my talk page. Please leave me a message below and I will generally reply on your talk page. Although my email address is enabled, I do not check often (so I may be slow in replying to email and very much prefer to have conversations here). I am not around much, so it may take me a while to reply or respond to requests. Please note that while I will do a peer review on just about any article if asked, it will often take me a week or more, and I do not have the time to do copyedits. If you want me to review an article, please open a peer review on it first. Thanks for stopping by and happy editing! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 18:08, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. Hi Ruhrfisch.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins). MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Ruhrfisch. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Hi Ruhrfisch, I remember you helped out with some German-language issues at rhodocene many years ago, and I am wondering if you can offer some help with the article aluminium sulfacetate which I have recently created. This source from 1899 speaks of its use as a mordant being abandoned and about production of an "empyreumatic liquid." My DYK nomination uses this fact for the hook and the translation has been questioned. Would you be able to look at the German version of the text and comment? Happy to change the article and hook if I have misrepresented the source, obviously. Many Thanks. EdChem ( talk) 21:05, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Again. My brain is still buzzed by 3 operations in 4 months so I'm wobbly esp in the memory (and judgement) departments here. I'm trying to ease back in the en.WP but have been met with some stiff opposition from the newest editors, that Commomzmostly.. I'm sure I make mistakes, but they are good faith edits. They only rollback them usually without not leaving any edit summary. I am considering discontinuing working on the wikis. These others have make this a formidable place-- amd I am a team player! So- you may recall that I NEVER wanted to be am Admim, since I despise confrontation. Here is an example of his/her belief that its OK to place open lniks to [[NAMM] in the centers of articles.for example: Arthur Adams; the editor is User talk:Allisonhargis, and I hate to come to you about this! -- Leahtwosaints
Various 37.230.x IPs (who seem all to be the same person) are grinding an axe here. In particular they are convinced anyone who doesn't like their edits is your sockpuppet (and that we/you are both a vandal and a "hacker"), which is why I'm bringing it to your attention. I have started an essay on the concept of narrative flow, a concept that I think is largely undervalued in the encyclopedia in general. I decided to search for discussions where editors had raised the concept, figuring that such editors might want to chime in on the meaning of the concept and I found a mention by you. Hey Ruhr, long time. I hope youre well. Can you take a look at something I noticed while reading. Six-year itch seems iffy. Like it is made up. The list of elections attributed to it is at least suspect. I can eliminate several right off with only cursory research. I know this isnt your area but I haven't the time to do much here these days and this article concerned me because it has one source and it is almost false on its face. The file File:Franz Josef Land Map.PNG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Orphaned, unlikely to be useful.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your
edit summary or on
the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the
proposed deletion process, but other
deletion processes exist. In particular, the
speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and
files for discussion allows discussion to reach
consensus for deletion. ~

Hello. When placing a Wikimedia Commons image on the main page (as in the case of
your edit to the TFA section), please ensure that it's been protected beforehand. Otherwise, it will remain a potential vandalism target until
KrinkleBot detects the transclusion and updates
Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en accordingly (which won't occur at all during outages, some of which have spanned several days).
A Commons image can be protected via the
Commons media protection page or by uploading a local copy (which should be tagged with the {{
uploaded from Commons}} template). Thanks very much. —
David Levy 08:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
I noticed that your talk page has been semi-protected since 25 September 2013 (with the rationale " User request within own user space"). Quoting Wikipedia:Protection policy#User talk pages:
User talk pages are rarely protected, and are semi-protected for short durations only in the most severe cases of vandalism from IP users. Users whose talk pages are semi-protected should have an unprotected user talk subpage linked conspicuously from their main talk page to allow good faith comments from non-autoconfirmed users.A user's request to have his or her own talk page protected is not a sufficient rationale to protect the page.
Thanks again. — David Levy 08:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ruhrfisch,
I'm writing to ask whether you would consider having a look at the article. I'm aware that you've been involved with a few PRs before. I've given it a major rewrite and complete overhaul. I began working on the article late October when it looked like this and somehow ended up rewriting the whole thing and aiming for potentially FA. This isn't a process I've been through before, but I have been reading the reviews here in preparation, and am familiar with FAC demands. I would very much appreciate a fresh set of eyes and happily address any concerns you may have.

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in ( here), I'll talk about this below - but first:
The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:
{{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}}
- if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.{{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}}
- if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.
I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.
So, I've decided to create " WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.
We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!
And... that's it!
I wish you all well on your Wikivoyages, Tom (LT) ( talk) 00:31, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

I see that the long battle to save the geoboxes is over and lost. The switch seems to have caused little in the way of data loss, but the top images are notable exceptions. The bot (or person) making the changes strips the image size line, and the default is too small. I've fixed all the Oregon stream articles one by one, adding the size parameter and setting it to 300 to match the map size. I've done the same for Larrys Creek, and I'll do more as time and my various ailments allow. My Wikepedia time is greatly reduced from a year ago, but is not yet zero. Please let me know if you do not want me to reset the size to 300. Hi, by the way. I hope things are going well with you. Finetooth ( talk) 23:19, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Administrators
must secure their accounts
The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.
|
This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 03:01, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, - Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.
Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:10, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators.

I'm trying to ease back in the en.WP but have been met with some stiff opposition from the newest editors, that Commomzmostly.. I'm sure I make mistakes, but they are good faith edits. The file File:Franz Josef Land Map.PNG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Orphaned, unlikely to be useful.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your

the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the

speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and
files for discussion allows discussion to reach
consensus for deletion. ~

A Commons image can be protected via the
Commons media protection page or by uploading a local copy (which should be tagged with the {{
uploaded from Commons}} template).

{{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}}
- if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.{{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}}

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so
will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
