From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions ( prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{ transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{ prodded}} will suffice.

Shooting ranges in Norway

Shooting ranges in Norway (  | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – ( View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources:  Google ( books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This list article comprehensively fails WP:LISTCRITERIA on the basis the article is a list of inter-wiki links to Norwegian Wikipedia.

Looking at the linked articles on NO:WP, they seem to just consist of a table of shooting ranges with name, municipality and the lat/long (which links to GeoHack).

So what we have is a list of links to pages on another wiki, which would themselves fail WP:NOTDIRECTORY here.

This is fine on no.wp if it meets their GNG. On en.wp it does not.

There's no encyclopaedic content there worth importing to en.wp which would help this page meet WP:GNG. I don't see how this page meets (or could ever meet) notability unless it could be rewritten to cover some unique or special feature of Norwegian shooting ranges that marks them out from ranges anywhere else in the world (if such a feature exists, which it probably doesn't).

I don't think any argument can be made that the no.wp links are just placeholding until equivalent articles can be created on en.wp because I can't see how a page like this would past LISTCRITERIA on en.wp. It's interesting and useful information... but for some sort of geo project. It's not encyclopaedic content. Hemmers ( talk) 08:57, 12 July 2024 (UTC) reply

References do not show how this is notable. Plenty of unreliable sources and NEWSORGINDIA but nothing in-depth. Recommend a redirect to parent Pakistan Television Corporation. While I did not do so prior to the AfD, programming also needs to be removed per WP:NOTTVGUIDE. It appears that the notability of the page is attempted to be heightened by the mentions of the programs it shows. CNMall41 ( talk) 23:32, 10 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Delete Keep. I agree that there are no good sources, and that its near impossible to find a reliable source talking about the Nike Indoor Nationals. Turns out there are some good sources talking about it. A lot of @ Habst's sources are about the Nike Outdoor nationals, but they still provided a good number of articles about the Indoor Nationals. The sources aren't really fully about the event specifically, but I believe they're still fine articles to use. Coulomb1 ( talk) 14:20, 10 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Keep, because the event meets WP:GNG as an important prep athletics championship. Responding to the concerns by @ CanonNi and @ Coulomb1, there's plenty of independent coverage from The Washington Post, New York Times, The Post-Standard, MileSplit, The Journal News, Bozeman Daily Chronicle The Cullman Times, and many more. -- Habst ( talk) 16:30, 10 July 2024 (UTC) reply
All of my links were for the indoor nationals – for the outdoor nationals, there's even more coverage from LetsRun.com, Track & Field News, The Santa-Cruz Sentinel, Eugene Register-Guard, MileSplit, etc. -- Habst ( talk) 16:41, 10 July 2024 (UTC) reply

@ Twinkle1990: - can I just point out NSPORT states that "Failing to meet the criteria in this guideline means that notability will need to be established in other ways (for example, the general notability guideline...) - so all NSPORT is saying that people who meet those criteria are considered notable, but not meeting those criteria doesn't automatically make them non-notable. Fails WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC #5 (Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources.")

I created the article in 2020 when the old WP:NGRIDIRON presumed notability for NFL players -- we have database sources showing that Cleve appeared in 19 NFL games as a back and end from 1921-1924. When the presumption was reversed, User:Hey man im josh correctly tagged the article due to the need for additional sources. I thought that someone who appeared in 19 NFL games would have WP:SIGCOV, but my follow-up searches in 2022 didn't find any. I searched again today but didn't find anything rising to the level of SIGCOV. (FWIW: I did find some passing references where his given name was listed as "Ainar" [3] and others as "Einar" [4] [5].)

Despite my efforts, the article still does not comply with our guidelines, so it's time for me to throw in the towel -- unless someone can dig up SIGCOV that I've been unable to find. Cbl62 ( talk) 00:37, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply

@ Jweiss11: Two issues with your suggestion: 1) a closer cannot redirect to a redlink so that's not viable unless someone creates it; and (2) is there SIGCOV to support the proposed article? Cbl62 ( talk) 19:54, 29 June 2024 (UTC) reply
It's probably worth the editing time to create the proposed article, though, and merging the very small amount of information. The 1898 and 1899 articles aren't in great shape either, and it's possible the game(s) which were played were indeed covered in local papers of the time. We could expand the scope of Pacific Tigers football, 1895–1899 to include 1919 and perhaps some or all of the 1920s. I think Pacific may have played rugby at some pint between 1900 and 1918, a la 1906–1917 Stanford rugby teams. That could be covered in an expanded article as well. Given that the merge target of Pacific Tigers football, 1895–1899 had already been created (by me per precedent with suggestion from two other editors), what's the point of keeping this AfD open? I don't think there's any consensus to keep this as a stand-alone article. Randy Kryn, you were the only keep vote. Would agree now that the merge to Pacific Tigers football, 1895–1899 is the best course of action? Jweiss11 ( talk) 02:03, 13 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Sure, Jweiss11, that works. Randy Kryn ( talk) 02:38, 13 July 2024 (UTC) reply
I don't think all editors were in favor of this Merge. But I'm not the only closer in town, another one might decide to close this discussion presently. I just wanted to see more support which Randy's opinion helps. Liz Read! Talk! 02:43, 13 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Liz, okay, I understand that it's not solely on you to close this. For the record, I'll note two similar recent AfDs with analogous content: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1884 DePauw football team and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1884 Wabash football team. Jweiss11 ( talk) 03:18, 13 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Beanie - I've previously taken the same position, but I think that may be wrong. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) merging preserves the edit history of both articles. If that is correct, the merge maintains the attribution history on the original work. Cbl62 ( talk) 01:41, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply
* Merge or redirect. Favoring merge if that preserves the attribution history. Otherwise redirect for the reasons outlined by BeanieFan. Cbl62 ( talk) 01:41, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply
I suppose an admin could perform a WP:HISTMERGE here if that's deemed necessary. But there's never been a whole a lot of substance in this article. Jweiss11 ( talk) 02:16, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Note that in the case of 1884 Wabash football team merging to Wabash football, 1884–1889, no history merge was performed. Same for 1884 DePauw football team merging to DePauw football, 1884–1889. Jweiss11 ( talk) 02:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply

So what exactly makes this guy notable? Being the son of Michael Vaughan, is all I can tell. Mahmutaj never played in a professional league and the coverage to date isn't enough for WP:SIGCOV, in my view. Panorama 1 is just an announcement of being released, Panorama 2 is just a direct quote from Mahmutaj with no third party analysis and Sport Ekspres represents the best source on him but it still only confirms that he scored 19 goals for Luftëtari and played at under-17 level for Albania, which I would say falls just short of the depth required. Spiderone (Talk to Spider) 11:16, 14 July 2024 (UTC) reply

This interview is an example of one that would count as having at least some third party analysis (of the tennis player Carlos Alcaraz). Clariniie I am aware that that's a different sport, though. Good interview sources for football look like The Guardian (Leah Williamson interview) and BBC (Aitana Bonmatí interview). Notice how the articles are written outside of a normal Q&A format and how most of them start with some background info on the interviewee first, which automatically pushes it to SIGCOV. The articles do more than just merely regurgitate the interview. If someone can find similar calibre sourcing for Mahmutaj, I will happily withdraw my support for deletion. Footballer whose article has no footnotes, and whose only references are external links to database entries, and so does not meet general notability or sports notability in its current state. The article says that he played for the Spanish national team, which is probably true but unverified, and there isn't a football notability guideline that says that this is notability or presumed notability. The Heymann criterion is to find two reliable sources that provide significant coverage within seven days.

  • Keep per WP:GNG. Current content is misleading. Article is biased toward the famous "parent", while the club continues on the license and registration of the other parent. I will fix that. Name should be Haarlem-Kennemerland FC. While I support dropping the FC where it is not needed, here it is needed. "Haarlem Kennemerland" is "city region" and that is ambiguous. The dash was unjustifiably dropped. Nomination is focused on the fact that the club currently plays in the Vierde Klasse, however it has played in the Tweede Klasse and under the previous name in the Eerste. gidonb ( talk) 16:01, 14 July 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Delete. Doesn't meet WP:CLUB or WP:GNG. I have added the only two sources I could find, which support the text, to the article. That there do not appear to be independent/reliable sources available to support even the basic facts in the text (formation date, current status, disestablishment?) suggests that SIGCOV is not met. Apart from northernirelandworld.com (a hyper-local online news sources which has perhaps a handful of match reports and other random mentions), the only coverage in "mainstream" news sources are these passing mentions in the Belfast Telegraph. Even if these two news articles dealt with the subject org as a primary topic (and they don't), it'd be difficult to argue that two (semi-regional) news articles amounted to significant coverage. That the article was created and expanded by clearly SPA/COI editors (seemingly as a form of NOTWEBHOST) is hard to overlook. Cannot support/advocate for retention. 2. The tournament is organized by the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA), which oversees football in Central Asia. CAFA is a member of the AFC and, therefore, FIFA. As an international competition between member nations, the tournament holds significant notability. This is particularly relevant now, as some footballers who participated in the tournament are becoming prominent figures in Central Asian football and across Asia. The tournament shall be cited as the beginning of their international careers, further emphasizing its importance. Lunar Spectrum96 ( talk) 09:31, 6 July 2024 (UTC) reply
  • Comment International level competition and there are sources, however they are very young. So I am not sure at what level wikipedia should be keeping these. Govvy ( talk) 10:27, 8 July 2024 (UTC) reply
    • Keep
let us remember that The Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) was only formed in 2015, and with the tournament being the 8th tournament organised, CAFA has shown significant progress in promoting and developing football in the region. Over the years, CAFA has developed its media coverage and reporting capabilities, making the tournaments more accessible and notable. While the first editions may have had limited coverage due to CAFA's emerging stage and limited experience, the organization's growth and increased attention highlight the importance of these early stages articles being there.
Furthermore, for Central Asia, where international sports events are relatively scarce, CAFA's tournaments hold notable significance. The early editions of the tournament are crucial for understanding the development of football in the region and providing a better statistical context. As CAFA continues to grow and attract more attention, the historical records of all editions, including the first ones, will be valuable for researchers, fans, and anyone interested in the football in Central Asia.
Therefore, despite its relatively young age, CAFA's tournaments are notable and deserving of coverage on Wikipedia, as they contribute to the broader narrative of international sports in Central Asia. Lunar Spectrum96 ( talk) 19:21, 8 July 2024 (UTC) reply

As a friendly tournament, the matches were of no consequence. Thus, 10 years later, we can clearly see that the tournament was not noteworthy, wasn't important in the world of football and got a corresponding lack of coverage (apart from reports of the matches). The level of detailed coverage on display (goalscorers, match kick-off times, table) is therefore not needed, with the entry failing WP:NOTINHERITED (notability not being inherited from the participating teams), WP:MILL, WP:SUSTAINED and WP:NOTSTATS among others. • Most of these sources are interviews and paid promotions and do not help pass WP:NFOOTY. The player has not garnered significant reliable coverage for any other achievements because he has not played at an international level and he has not played for an entirely professional league to satisfy WP:GNG. He is an upcoming player but it is too early to warrant a page on this subject because of insufficient significant achievements.

My Google searches, even with "site:.sk" next to the club's name, only come up with club's official website and match reports, the former of which is not independent. • Weak keep. Had a good look for sources, plus information in general about this team. They most likely never played in the second tier of Slovak football either. Sport.sk seems to have nothing about them at all. Looking at the SME sources provided by SportingFlyer, I have summarized details of those references to aid the discussion here.
Sources linked on page discussed above by SportingFlyer
Article Overview "more than a trivial mention"

Senzácia v pohári. Fortunaligista vypadol s amatérmi Amateur team Rovinka knocked fully-pro side Senica out of the national cup. Yes

For me there are 6 instances (some overlapping) where I would argue for it being more than a trivial mention – see third column. In addition to the SME sources, the first source from Nfitz in their comment above (Deník) discusses a 2017 "Super Cup" match between winners of regional cups in the Czech Republic versus Slovakia. According to that, Rovinka played in that on account of having won the Bratislava football association cup beforehand, which I found a primary source for here. All in all, I feel this scrapes WP:GNG. More sources may of course exist. C 679 15:45, 12 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Comment: I saw the RSN discussion first, so I do not plan to vote, but to give my opinion from my limited perspective. Having taken a look at Scunthorpe Scorpions, which looks like two different teams on one article, I can count about five dozen riders that have articles. Of the " Notable riders," most of them use " speedway related sources" in their articles with British Speedway cited between two and three dozen times. (More problematic, but farther outside of the discussion is that at least one article is citing sources that are MREL and GUNREL.)
Overall, the issue over the specific sources is going to have an effect on other articles. If deemed a problem, then there will need to be more AfD discussions in the near future; while if deemed acceptable could lead to additional article creations. I am of the opinion that redirects to the team articles could be more preferred than deletion and that some information might be includable in the various team articles. That said, I am unsure if the sources are a problem on these rider articles. -- Super Goku V ( talk) 06:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply

(FWIW: I did find some passing references where his given name was listed as "Ainar" [58] and others as "Einar" [59] [60].)

Despite my efforts, the article still does not comply with our guidelines, so it's time for me to throw in the towel -- unless someone can dig up SIGCOV that I've been unable to find. Cbl62 ( talk) 00:37, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Thats one of my more minor points, my point is that he was considered such a good player and significant figure in Indian lower leagues that he was called up to senior nationl team. This proves my point that all delete votes are by users who seldom vote on football deletion debates who still think that players have to both meet WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTBALL. Either way, he has many secondary sources about him. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz ( talk) 23:16, 1 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Thank you for your response. In this case, "speedily delete" refers to speedy deletion, a separate, much quicker procedure which does not need a discussion to delete a page. This rugby article is not eligible to be deleted through that medium. However, in my opinion, the subject has not received significant coverage from reliable sources that cover him directly and in detail and thus might fail our general notability guidelines, which is why I brought it to a discussion.

Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

He hasn't played cricket at a senior level and hasn't done anything of note in cricket to warrant inclusion. No amount of WP:ROUTINE refbombs can hide that he is a WP:GNG fail. AA ( talk) 17:14, 9 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Keep. I don’t understand whether he has already played for Somerset and the England U19 to pass WP:NCRIC, but signing a contract with the club and being called up to the U19 team is being covered in the media, which indicates the passage WP:SIGCOV.

As an international competition between member nations, the tournament holds significant notability. This is particularly relevant now, as some footballers who participated in the tournament are becoming prominent figures in Central Asian football and across Asia.

This is a long-unsourced article of a football club that seems to have never played in the highest Slovak First Football League. I can't find any significant coverage of this club that meets WP:GNG. My Google searches, even with "site:.sk" next to the club's name, only come up with club's official website and match reports, the former of which is not independent. Corresponding article on Slovak Wikipedia has been tagged for notability issues for years, which certainly may not help copy over English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A.
Osobnosť majstra nominovali takmer všetci. Ako vyzerá ideálna jedenástka IV. ligy Bratislava? Club managers of the fourth-tier league chose their ideal league XI at the end of the 2023-24 season. One of Rovinka's players made it on the list. No

Yet another long-unsourced article of a Slovak men's footballer who seems to have a minor career. According to Soccerway, his career in higher level clubs lasted between 107 and 800 minutes.

This rugby article is not eligible to be deleted through that medium. However, in my opinion, the subject has not received significant coverage from reliable sources that cover him directly and in detail and thus might fail our general notability guidelines, which is why I brought it to a discussion. Redirect to  United States men nationa rugby league team#Current squad. Delete. Doesn't pass WP:RU/N, because on an inernational level, he played for United States men's national rugby league team (Eagles), but the player is presumed notable if he played for United States men's national rugby union team (Hawks). Per WP:RU/N USA domestic leagues aren't notable. Doesn't pass WP:SIGCOV, I haven't found any secondary sources that relate directly to the subject. Tau Corvi ( talk) 00:55, 9 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Not in the current squad so the redirect there would not be useful and only played one match at world cup, an alternative could be Colonial Cup (rugby league), but lack of significant coverage makes delete seem a reasonable option. EdwardUK ( talk) 15:12, 10 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Redirect to Slovakia at the 2014 Winter Olympics#Luge as ATD because I could not find any in-depth coverage about this luger to meet WP:GNG. All I found on news websites were passing mentions of his participation at the tournament. He was not even on top three luge winners. This article has been deleted from Slovak Wikipedia on 18 November 2018, possibly due to BLP concerns. The only interlanguage wiki available is Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian) Wikipedia but it listed exactly the same sources as the English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 11:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC) reply

Redirect as above or to Luge at the 2014 Winter Olympics – Doubles#Results. Doesn’t meet WP:SIGCOV. Tau Corvi ( talk) 17:44, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply
