I see that you've finished the first and second items in the set. I just wanted to let you know that, in my opinion, the first image still has too much pink speckling on the right side, outside of the border. I'm not sure if that's fixable, but it is noticeable, as the other three sides outside of the border are, even zoomed out, significantly greyer looking. This Thursday's VisualEditor update was mostly about stability and performance improvements, and some preparatory work for major planned improvements, along with bug fixes for non-English language support and right-to-left text. Everything that the English Wikipedia received today has been running on Mediawiki for a week already.
Officially, the problem with the link inspector not linking to a specific section on a page ( bug 53219) was fixed in this release, although that critical patch actually appeared here earlier.
A number of bugs related to copy-and-paste functionality were fixed ( 48604, bug 50043, bug 53362, bug 51538, among others). Full rich copy-and-paste from external sources into VisualEditor is expected "soon".
In other fixes, you can no longer add empty ref tags (<ref/>
) (
bug 53345). Selecting both an image and some text, and then trying to add a link, previously deleted the selected image and the text. This was fixed in
bug 50127. There was another problem related to using arrow keys to move the cursor next to an inline image that was fixed (
bug 53507).
Looking ahead: The next planned upgrade is scheduled for next Thursday, and you should expect to find a redesigned toolbar with drop-down menus that include room for references, templates, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript, and code formatting. There will also be keyboard shortcuts for setting the format (paragraph vs section headings).
If you are active at other Wikipedias, the next group of Wikipedias to have VisualEditor offered to all users is being determined at this time. Generally speaking, languages that depend on the input method editor are not going to receive VisualEditor this month. The current target date is Tuesday, September 24 for logged-in users only. You can help with translating the documentation. In several cases, most of the translation is already done, and it only needs to be copied over to the relevant Wikipedia. If you are interested in finding out whether a particular Wikipedia is currently on the list, you can leave a message for me at my talk page.
For other questions or suggestions, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting problem reports at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and other ideas at Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:39, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Dear Adam Cuerden.
This is just a quick courtesy notice. You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Manning naming dispute. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Manning naming dispute/Evidence. Please add your evidence by September 19, 2013, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Manning naming dispute/Workshop. Adam,
About five years ago someone uploaded this image of a soldier in Vietnam and nominated it for candidacy as an FP. It received a split vote: 6 in support, 5 against: the majority was not 2/3rds, so it did not become an FP. I just saw the picture today, and immediately thought, "Featured picture!" Then saw that it had indeed been nominated, and that somehow, for what looked to me to be trivial reasons, it had failed. I would like to renominate the picture, as I am all but certain that it would pass if nominated a second time, but I am not sure there is a procedure for this (or maybe there is NO procedure, and all I have to do is nominate it as though it had never been nominated before? (but maybe that would overwrite the original discussion). Or else that it is not possible to renominate an image once it has failed candidacy?). Can you advise me on this? Thanks! Hello, Adam Cuerden. Thank you for your recent submission of evidence for the Manning naming dispute Arbitration case. As you may be aware, the Arbitration Committee asks that users submitting evidence in cases adhere to limits regarding the length of their submissions. These limits, currently at 1000 words and 100 diffs for parties and 500 words and 50 diffs for all others, are in place to ensure that the Arbitration Committee receives only the most important information relevant to the case, and is able to determine an appropriate course of action in a reasonable amount of time. The evidence you have submitted currently exceeds at least one of these limits, and is presently at 1650 words and 1 diffs. Please try to reduce the length of your submission to fit within these limits; this guide may be able to provide some help in doing so. If the length of your evidence is not reduced soon, it may be refactored or removed by a human clerk within a few days. Thank you! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the case, please contact the drafting Arbitrator or case clerk (who are listed on the case pages); if you have any questions or concerns about this bot, please contact the operator. VisualEditor has been updated twice in the last two weeks. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at Mediawiki during the previous week.
As announced, the toolbar was redesigned to be simpler, shorter, and to have the ability to have drop-down groups with descriptions. What you see now is the initial configuration and is expected to change in response to feedback from the English Wikipedia and other Wikipedias. The controls to add <u>
(underline),
(subscript), and
(superscript), <s>
(strikethrough) and <code>
(computer code/monospace font) annotations to text are available to all users in the drop-down menu. At the moment, all but the most basic tools have been moved into a single drop-down menu, including the tools for inserting media, references, reference lists, and templates. The current location of all of the items in the toolbar is temporary, and your opinions about the best order are needed! Please offer suggestions at
Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback/Toolbar.
In an eagerly anticipated upgrade to the reference dialog, newly added references or reference groups no longer need the page to be saved before they can be re-used (bugs 51689 and 52000). The 'Use existing reference' button is now disabled on pages which don't yet have any references ( bug 51848). The template parameter filter in the transclusion dialog now searches both parameter name and label ( bug 51670).
In response to several requests, there are some new keyboard shortcuts. You can now set the block/paragraph formatting from the keyboard: Ctrl+0 sets a block as a regular paragraph; Ctrl+1 up to Ctrl+6 sets it as a Heading 1 ("Page title") to Heading 6 ("Sub-heading 4"); Ctrl+7 sets it as pre-formatted ( bug 33512). Ctrl+2, which creates level 2 section headings, may be the most useful.
Some improvements were made to capitalization for links, so typing in "iPhone" will offer a link to "iPhone" as well as "IPhone" ( bug 50452).
Copying and pasting within the same document should work better as of today's update, as should copying from VisualEditor into a third-party application ( bug 53364, bug 52271, bug 52460). Work on copying and pasting between VisualEditor instances (for example, between two articles) and retaining formatting when copying from an external source into VisualEditor is progressing.
Major improvements to editing with input method editors (IMEs; mostly used for Indic and East Asian languages) are being deployed today. This is a complex change, so it may produce unexpected errors. On a related point, the names of languages listed in the "languages" (langlinks) panel in the Page settings dialog now display as RTL when appropriate ( bug 53503).
Looking ahead: The help/'beta' menu will soon expose the build number next to the "Leave feedback" link, so users can give more specific reports about issues they encounter ( bug 53050). This change will make it easier for developers to identify any cacheing issues, once it starts reporting the build number (currently, it says "Version false"). Also, inserting a link, reference or media file will put the cursor after the new content again ( bug 53560). Next week’s update will likely improve how dropdowns and other selection menus behave when they do not fit on the screen, with things scrolling so the selected item is always in view.
If you are active at other Wikipedias, the next group of Wikipedias to have VisualEditor offered to all users is being finalized. About two dozen Wikipedias are on the list for Tuesday, September 24 for logged-in users only, and on Monday, September 30 for unregistered editors. You can help with translating the documentation. In several cases, most of the translation is already done, and it only needs to be copied over to the relevant Wikipedia. Hi Adam, I was confused by your "THE ARBCOM PROPOSAL TO DELAY MOVE DISCUSSIONS IS FAILING" and "vanishingly unlikely this will pass" comments over at Talk:Chelsea Manning#Postpone move discussion. Isn't only a simple majority of 7 votes needed for a pass, as described in the lede of WP:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Manning naming dispute/Proposed decision? So I don't understand how 6-4 with two votes remaining signifies "failing" and "vanishingly unlikely to pass". I do understand your "highly controversial ... with so much opposition", but your other remarks sounded like saying that a competitor up 6-4 with two more matches to run was loosing, which confused me. Now that WTT has opposed and the vote stands at 6-5, -sche has written that it is "impossible for the final outstanding Arbitrator to sway the decision unless another Arbitrator changes votes". But isn't the remaining active arbitrator in a position to cast a deciding vote? What am I misunderstanding here? -- ToE 11:42, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Cwmhiraeth ( submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Sasata ( submissions), Hawkeye7 ( submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and Casliber ( submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).
The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! VisualEditor is still being updated every Thursday. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at
Mediawiki during the previous week. If you haven't done so already, you can turn on VisualEditor by going to
your preferences and choosing the item, "
MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable
".
The reference dialog for all Wikipedias, especially the way it handles citation templates, is being redesigned. Please offer suggestions and opinions at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. (Use your Wikipedia username/password to login there.) You can also drag and drop references (select the reference, then hover over the selected item until your cursor turns into the drag-and-drop tool). This also works for some templates, images, and other page elements (but not yet for text or floated items). References are now editable when they appear inside a media item's caption ( bug 50459).
There were a number of miscellaneous fixes made: Firstly, there was a bug that meant that it was impossible to move the cursor using the keyboard away from a selected node (like a reference or template) once it had been selected ( bug 54443). Several improvements have been made to scrollable windows, panels, and menus when they don't fit on the screen or when the selected item moves off-screen. Editing in the "slug" at the start of a page no longer shows up a chess pawn character ("♙") in some circumstances ( bug 54791). Another bug meant that links with a final punctuation character in them broke extending them in some circumstances ( bug 54332). The "page settings" dialog once again allows you to remove categories ( bug 54727). There have been some problems with deployment scripts, including one that resulted in VisualEditor being broken for an hour or two at all Wikipedias ( bug 54935). Finally, snowmen characters ("☃") no longer appear near newly added references, templates and other nodes ( bug 54712).
Looking ahead: Development work right now is on rich copy-and-paste abilities, quicker addition of citation templates in references, setting media items' options (such as being able to put images on the left), switching into wikitext mode, and simplifying the toolbar. A significant amount of work is being done on other languages during this month. If you speak a language other than English, you can help with translating the documentation.
For other questions or suggestions, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting problem reports at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and other ideas at Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:41, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Adam- I recently nominated a complete type set of United States Fractional currency for Wikipedia FP. It was unopposed, but only received 4 support votes. Since it closed I have re-cropped the images and increased the file size. As someone who regularly nominates sets of images do you have any additional suggestions? I really don't want to break the collection into sections because it is a complete set. Also, in my work at the Smithsonian, I have been able to scan original proof prints of U.S. Treasury Seals (and many other original engravings). They require some light cleaning/restoration (which is beyond my ability). I thought one or two I had in mind could become the lead image for Symbols of the United States Department of the Treasury, and we could co-nominate the image for Wikipedia FP. (The originals are no more than 2 inches in diameter). If that is something you might consider I will load the tiff file (88mb, 5892x5227, scanned at 2400dpi). Look, I really think you're being unfair here. Pictures were mentioned in the newsletter, several times. January's newsletter, August's newsletter and October's newsletter all mentioned your work on featured pictures. This is despite the fact that you were one of the only people working on featured pictures in the WikiCup. Like it or not, the featured picture process is a smaller area of Wikipedia; did you knows, good articles and featured articles at least (and likely featured lists too) have to be a higher priority for the WikiCup. They are more primarily what Wikipedia is about (we could have an encyclopedia without news, pictures, sounds, topics and portals, but we couldn't have an encyclopedia without articles). As I have said (and as you've resolutely chosen to ignore) this is actually explicitly written into the featured picture criteria. Articles necessarily have a certain priority over pictures. Look at other less-traversed content types; we had one user above all others who was interested in in the news this year, producing as many ITN articles in one round as you produced FPs in the final round. There were three mentions in the newsletter of ITN. Featured lists were produced by many users; they were only mentioned twice in the newsletter. You know I love featured pictures; this certainly isn't a personal prejudice of mine. Remember that Durova won the first big WikiCup through her featured picture work, and that the WikiCup effectively led the way in terms of recognising valued pictures and featured sounds. I'm just trying to keep things interesting for everyone else. J Milburn ( talk) 09:17, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Okay, let's review:
January
FP "Adam Cuerden (submissions) was the first to score for a featured picture, with File:Thure de Thulstrup - L. Prang and Co. - Battle of Gettysburg - Restoration by Adam Cuerden.jpg."
Meanwhile, everything actually featured got at least a couple sentences describing it:
Non FP:
As can be seen, while the existence of FPs was mentioned, unlike other content, they were not described in any way.
August
FP: He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing. [...] . Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone.
Non FP:
Again, the other content mentioned has actual descriptions of what was done.
October
FP: Adam Cuerden (submissions) wins the FP prize, for 23 featured pictures in round 5, worth 805 point.
So, no. In the entire Wikicup, you never wrote a single word describing anything about any featured picture, ever, and didn't even link to a single one outside of the first one promoted.
I'm sorry, but seriously? Reading what you actually wrote about Featured pictures - trivial mentions, only in a single case linking to any example, do you really think you've acted fairly?
I'm not complaining that you didn't mention them more often, I'm complaining that you never described a single featured picture at all. Never. Not once.
Seriously, if you really want the Wikicup to not be article-only, you need to make an effort to actually describe the content being produced outside of article space. Simply saying that a type of content exists, then moving on to lengthy, enthusiastic descriptions of content of other types is hardly helpful.
However, I will agree with you on one point: You also utterly failed with Lists and ITN. You should have tried harder with them too.

Are you going to participate? I am. I plan on a challenge... I'll begin by gathering some resources. Just as a slight note. Chances are I'll need over 600-800 different references for each one of the articles I am planning on doing as what I envision to be nearly a year long endeavor. I might have more than a pressing need for your skills if I am to complete such articles... perhaps we could suggest a Feature pictures for a featured article bonus point system? I think a 1.5x multiplier should be given to featured pictures on featured articles. ChrisGualtieri ( talk) 02:33, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some feature changes, major infrastructure improvements to make the system more stable, dependable and extensible, some minor toolbar improvements, and fixing bugs.
A new form parsing library for language characters in Parsoid caused the corruption of pages containing diacritics for about an hour two weeks ago. Relatively few pages at the English Wikipedia were affected, but this created immediate problems at some other Wikipedias, sometimes affecting several dozen pages. Below is a list of images that I picked out back when I was thinking of working on Portal:Games. As that portal is no longer one of my priorities, I don't need the list anymore. If you do any of them, I'd be happy to stick them in the portal, but I don't see that portal as having enough content to make FP any time in the near future, and there are dozens of portals that need my attention more urgently.
If you have any use for the list, it's yours. If not, feel free to discard it. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:15, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Well, it only took about an hour and a half on my end, but you've got a heck of an exhibition coming up on 30 December ( Check it out). That's all 20, by my reckoning. Though I'll have to skip Auld Lang Syne for now, since it's so similar in style. May use Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket instead... dunno yet. — Crisco 1492 ( talk) 09:05, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some toolbar improvements, fixing bugs, and improving support for Indic languages as well as other languages with complex characters. The current focus is on improving the reference dialog and expanding the new character inserter tool.
There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:
?veaction=edit
to the end of the page name. For example, change
/info/en/?search=Special:Random
to
/info/en/?search=Special:Random?veaction=edit
to open a random page in VisualEditor. This is intended to support bug testing across multiple browsers, without requiring editors to login repeatedly.Looking ahead: The transclusion dialog will see further changes in the coming weeks, with a simple mode for single templates and an advanced mode for more complex transclusions. The new character formatting menu on the toolbar will get an arrow to show that it is a drop-down menu. The reference dialog will be improved, and the Reference item will become a button in the main toolbar, rather than an item in the Insert menu.
If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) ( talk) 20:38, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
A Google search of "sheet music with lyrics" showed most with beamed notes that cross syllables. In fact, nearly every. single. one. of. them. (Also, all of them that have a distinct vocal staff are unchorded, but whatever). *sigh* So, you want me to throw all this work out and start over from scratch then. So be it. Despite your somewhat condescending tone ("I take it you don't sing?"), I'm going to attempt to give you what you want. So, please provide -- in detail -- exactly what you want here on your talk page or mine and I'll see what I can do to make you happy. Niamh ( talk) 07:53, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Hello Adam Cuerden, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked mostly minor features and fixing bugs. A few significant bugs include working around a bug in CSSJanus that was wrongly flipping images used in some templates in right-to-left (RTL) environments ( bug 50910) a major bug that meant inserting any template or other transclusion failed ( bug 59002), a major but quickly resolved problem due to an unannounced change in MediaWiki core, which caused VisualEditor to crash on trying to save ( bug 59867). This last bugs did not appear on any Wikipedia. Additionally, significant work has been done in the background to make VisualEditor work as an independent editing system.
As of today, VisualEditor is now available as an opt-out feature to all users at 149 active Wikipedias.

Can you show me what they are? Please don't delete anything without discussion. -- Ssilvers ( talk) 19:49, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi Adam! Hope it was okay to take your name in vain :-)
The post was a follow-up to a question User:Aa77zz asked me a couple of a days ago on my talk page, really about how far to go, when cleaning up some of the 1 million free images the British Library has just dropped onto Flickr; and also etiquette etc for when to overwrite vs when to fork images on Commons.
I answered as best I could, but I'd be very grateful if you could look over what I wrote and give your thoughts.
I also mentioned a series -- Commons:Le Keux, Memorials of Cambridge -- that I cleaned quite aggressively, but now don't look quite right to me, and I'm not sure why. They seem too dark to me, and don't have quite the right feel any more (I don't know if you'd agree?) -- so I'd be very interested in any instincts you had. Is it that I made the background to harsh? Is a slightly warmer off-white than #FFFFFF what's needed to fix the problem?
Finally, I was wondering whether there was a forum anywhere on Commons or WP for this sort of thing, that reviews the best approaches, with a talk-page for discussion. There are the archives of Commons:VP, but I was wondering if there was anywhere more specific, with more of an ongoing discussion?
So thoughts in any of those areas would be very welcome. Thanks very much, Jheald ( talk) 18:22, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

The images on Flint's page look great, but I also like your idea of creating an article just for the book and its images, and just leaving a couple of the G&S ones on Flint's article itself, otherwise the G&S images take over his page. Hello Adam Cuerden,
A while ago, I nominated the article about Frederik Magle to GA. It has not been reviewed yet, but that has allowed me, and other editors, to improve it further in the meantime (The nomination - my first - was probably slightly premature, but now I hope it is ready). Since you have reviewed several articles about classical music-topics in the past, I was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing this one. I would be very grateful. Hi Adam - I know all images are doctored somewhat, merely by reproducing them digitally. It would be helpful to me, and perhaps other readers, if you were very clear about what process each of your photos went through. "Restoration" is a good clue. In the Yeoman shot, it was listed as a "photograph", but as produced on a date preceding colour photography. Is there a more technical term, such as "photograph which was later tinted" etc., that would be more accurate? Thanks. PS: I'm all for more images in Wikipedia. More articles could use them. I wish there was a pool of photos pre-approved for article writers to pic from. Wiki could run a side business selling usage of public domain shots. cheers Billyshiverstick ( talk) 21:43, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 ( submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some small changes to the user interface, such as moving the reference item to the top of the Insert menu, as well as some minor features and fixing bugs, especially for rich copying and pasting of references.
The biggest change was the addition of more features to the image dialog, including the ability to set alignment (left, right, center), framing options (thumbnail, frame, frameless, and none), adding alt text, and defining the size manually. There is still some work to be done here, including a quick way to set the default size.

Britten - The Early Poems of Alfred, Lord Tennyson - The Lady of Shalott.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on April 3, 2014. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2014-04-03. Thank you for all of your contributions! — Crisco 1492 ( talk) 01:04, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Wells Cathedral, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bishop's Palace ( check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Urania's Mirror you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Jamesx12345 -- Jamesx12345 ( talk) 17:11, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the picture that the team selected as the best image that Rod took of Wells Cathedral is one of the least useful in terms of placement in the article. The article already contains the winter picture, and another blue picture similar to the featured image, but horizontal. As well as several more of Rod's exterior views of the east end.
That image is a pretty pic of the pool and reflection, but it is not useful in describing the architecture, and is less useful than the winter picture in giving an image of the environs.
The article on Wells Cathedral is a featured article, and to attain that status, the layout of the images has undergone a really intense degree of scrutiny. Placing a vertical picture right under the info box, where it doesn't match the size of the box, and is partly displaced by the box simply doesn't work as a successful layout. It doesn't work, visually. Rod's other images are only slightly less good.
I have put the featured image at the top of the article Reflecting pool. Amandajm ( talk) 02:39, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
I've renominated, as the last one didn't get the requisite number. This is probably a violation of some rule, but the fact this wasn't delisted feels like a violation of common sense to me, so there you go. I'd appreciate it if you'd drop by again. J Milburn ( talk) 11:44, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has mostly worked on changes to the template and image dialogs.
The biggest change in the last few weeks was the redesign of the template dialog. The template dialog now opens in a simplified mode that lists parameters and their descriptions. (The complex multi-item transclusion mode can be reached by clicking on "Show options" from inside the simplified template dialog.) Template parameters now have a bigger, auto-sizing input box for easier editing. With today's update, searching for template parameters will become case-insensitive, and required template parameters will display an asterisk (*) next to their edit boxes. In addition to making it quicker and easier to see everything when you edit typical templates, this work was necessary to prepare for the forthcoming simplified citation dialog. The main priority in the coming weeks is building this new citation dialog, with the ultimate goal of providing autofill features for ISBNs, URLs, DOIs and other quick-fills. This will add a new button on the toolbar, with the citation templates available picked by each wiki's community. Concept drawings can be seen at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. Please share your ideas about making referencing quick and easy with the designers.

If you switch from VisualEditor to wikitext editing, your edit will now be tagged. The developers apologize for a regression bug with the deployment on 6 March 2014, which caused the incorrect removal of |upright
size definitions on a handful of pages on the English Wikipedia, among others. The root cause was fixed, and the broken pages were fixed soon after.
Looking ahead: Several template dialogs will become more compact. Looking further out, the developers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments. You will be able to see the Table of Contents change live as you edit the page, rather than it being hidden. In-line language setting (dir="rtl"

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 ( submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden ( submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian ( submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.
With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. Good luck! Hello, Adam Cuerden. A couple of weeks ago you added a 'POV section' tag to Verbosity#Style advice. I think the issue is more likely to be addressed if you start a discussion on the talk page. The template (and I know this is standard, and not down to you) says, "Relevant discussion may be found on the talk page," but there is no such discussion. An editor would have to check your hidden comment, and even then I think a bit more detail would be appreciated. That's just my opinion, but I think it would help. Happy editing, Cnilep ( talk) 01:33, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden ( submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 ( submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri ( submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian ( submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer ( submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid, iain james ( submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth ( submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga ( submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar ( submissions) and Red Phoenix ( submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.
192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Did you know?
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has mostly worked on the new citation tool, improving performance, reducing technical debt, and other infrastructure needs.
The biggest change in the last few weeks is the new citation template menu, labeled "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽". The new citation menu offers a locally configurable list of citation templates on the main toolbar. It adds or opens references using the simplified template dialog that was deployed last month. This tool is in addition to the "⧼visualeditor-dialogbutton-reference-tooltip⧽" item in the "Insert" menu, and it is not displayed unless it has been configured for that wiki. To enable this tool on your wiki, see the instructions at VisualEditor/Citation tool.
Eventually, the VisualEditor team plans to add autofill features for these citations. When this long-awaited feature is created, you could add an ISBN, URL, DOI or other identifier to the citation tool, and VisualEditor would automatically fill in as much information for that source as possible. The concept drawings can be seen at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog, and your ideas about making referencing quick and easy are still wanted.

This tool is most useful for pages whose text combines multiple languages with different directions, common on Right-to-Left wikis.Looking ahead: The toolbar from the PageTriage extension will no longer be visible inside VisualEditor. More buttons and icons will be accessible from the keyboard. The "Keyboard shortcuts" link will be moved out of the "Page options" menu, into the "Help" menu. Looking further out, the developers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments. VisualEditor will be available to all users on mobile devices and tablet computers. Would you be able to do the necessary cropping/minimal cleaning to give us a better version for the lead, and give us a separate signature image for the infobox? Adam and @ The ed17: this week's FC report is done. in the "Page options" menu, rounding out the full set of page options currently planned. The VisualEditor team has posted a draft of their goals for the next fiscal year. You can read them and suggest changes on MediaWiki.org.
The team posts details about planned work on VisualEditor's roadmap. You will soon be able to drag-and-drop text as well as images. If you drag an image to a new place, it won't let you place it in the middle of a paragraph. All dialog boxes and windows will be simplified based on user testing and feedback. The VisualEditor team plans to add autofill features for citations. Your ideas about making referencing quick and easy are still wanted. Support for upright image sizes is being developed. The designers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments and adding rows and columns to tables.
Please read VisualEditor/Citation tool for information on configuring the new citation template menu, labeled "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽". This menu will not appear unless it has been configured on your wiki.
If you speak a language other than English, we need your help with translating the user guide. The guide is out of date or incomplete for many languages, and what's on your wiki may not be the most recent translation. Please contact me if you need help getting started with translation work on MediaWiki.org.

Adam,
About five years ago someone uploaded this image of a soldier in Vietnam and nominated it for candidacy as an FP.
If you are interested in finding out whether a particular Wikipedia is currently on the list, you can leave a message for me at my talk page.

Thanks- Godot13 ( talk) 20:14, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Regarding your recent edits to Agoda; I would like to get some help understanding the reasons behind the removed content. Across Asia, where I'm based, Agoda is a large organization with significant brand recognition. I feel that BKKGreg has been active in keeping the page up-to-date and providing an impartial source of information for users researching the dominant businesses within the Asia/APAC region. During my time watching Agoda I haven't viewed this page as Wiki PR at all, I've come to see it as verifiable reference material that is relevant to Asia markets. At least you didn't accuse Bkkgreg of being this guy. Or Pedalissimo.

The WikiCup is over for another year! Our champion, for the second year running, is Cwmhiraeth ( submissions). Our final nine were as follows:
All those who reached the final win prizes, and prizes will also be going to the following participants:
Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!
Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.
Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I hope the operas have gone well. Any chance we can complete this soon, as it now stretching into months. I don't really want to relist, but if you don't have time we could fail it and do that.-- SabreBD ( talk) 19:14, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

The development teams for Parsoid and VisualEditor apologize for the serious disruption and thank the people who reported this emergency at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and on the public IRC channel, #mediawiki-visualeditor.
There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:
/wiki/Foobar?veaction=edit
and /?title=Foobar&veaction=edit
both now have text links that work if triggered (
bug 48915).$wgVisualEditorParsoidForwardCookies
set to true) (
bug 44483). (Most private wikis will also need to install Parsoid and node.js, as VisualEditor requires them.)Looking ahead:

Below is a list of images that I picked out back when I was thinking of working on Portal:Games. As that portal is no longer one of my priorities, I don't need the list anymore. If you do any of them, I'd be happy to stick them in the portal, but I don't see that portal as having enough content to make FP any time in the near future, and there are dozens of portals that need my attention more urgently.
If you have any use for the list, it's yours. If not, feel free to discard it. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:15, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

A Google search of "sheet music with lyrics" showed most with beamed notes that cross syllables. In fact, nearly every. single. one. of. them.

A while ago, I nominated the article about Frederik Magle to GA. It has not been reviewed yet, but that has allowed me, and other editors, to improve it further in the meantime (The nomination - my first - was probably slightly premature, but now I hope it is ready).

Thanks for putting together Prep4. I can't help but ask about your choice of lead hook. It's not one I would have chosen instinctively because the image is rather poor for DYK. However, I think it could be salvaged using a better pic. I would suggest that you substitute this cropped version for the one in the prep area. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 03:27, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Adam, the infringing material was removed, and the remainder of the article was awaiting a new reviewer. If you found further copyvios, then you should have mentioned it in the nomination template proper. If not, I don't understand the rejection.

In-line language setting (dir="rtl"
) may be offered to a few Wikipedias soon.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hi Adam, thanks for all your great work with photos, editing them, assorting them into a gallery (e.g., the Signpost recap of the WikiCup round), and your work with the Signpost. For all those contributions, have this barnstar! Go Phightins ! 02:57, 7 May 2014 (UTC) |
Adam, the caption to your new picture of Musca from the Bayer atlas says it can be seen "in the upper left". As oriented on the page, it's in the upper right. Either the picture should be turned or the caption amended. Skeptic2 ( talk) 10:40, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

I found something from this book (haven't uploaded the original yet) on LOC earlier and did a little bit of restoration on it here. Do you think that the paper should be lightened a bit more? It's a greyscale scan by the looks of it. — Crisco 1492 ( talk) 16:12, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
I thought of writing this week's FC report (may not finish it before my vacation). I doubt where to add Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/The Impact of Wikipedia by Adrianne Wadewitz in the report. Hopefully in featured sounds. Any idea? The herald 15:28, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi Adam, I hope all is well with you lately. I figured I ought to let you know where I'm at/my current plans - the current FAC I have running has one of the Graf lithographs that you could restore, and SMS Kaiser Friedrich III is next on my list to be overhauled, and it is also one of the fortunate articles to have one of the Hugo Graf lithographs. There's no real rush, since the article won't go to FAC until after the Wörth and the next one in line are done at the earliest. I thought you might want some help getting to that 2% ;) Parsecboy ( talk) 15:23, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

<span lang="en" dir="ltr">English</span>
. Support for upright image sizes (preferred for accessibility) and inline images is being developed. You will be able to see the Table of Contents while editing. Looking further out, the developers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments. VisualEditor will be available to all users on mobile devices and tablet computers. It will be possible to upload images to Commons from inside VisualEditor.
If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback or by joining the office hours on Thursday, 19 June 2014 at 10:00 UTC. Hi Adam- I appreciate you're busy with WikiCup FP candidates, so feel free to tell me to jog on, but could you give me a hand with an image? The frontispiece of this book (see here, a bigger version may be extractable) would make a great lead image for Wilhelmina FitzClarence, Countess of Munster (which I'm reviewing at GAC). Currently, we have the rather awful File:Countess of Munster 1904 frontispiece.jpg. Would you be able to do the necessary cropping/minimal cleaning to give us a better version for the lead, and give us a separate signature image for the infobox? (The copyright issue I've asked about separately here. It's definitely PD for our purposes, it's just working out what to do with it.) J Milburn ( talk) 10:24, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Adam and @ The ed17: this week's FC report is done. The zombie lead image is a little gruesome for my taste but since it passed FPC and Adam justifiably wanted to highlight Sven's good licensing work, unless we're willing to wait for a more benign image from Sven's work, I'll live with the zombies. -- Pine ✉ 06:49, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Adam, your encouragement of my image under consideration for featured picture status... That kind of enthusiasm, especially the bit about textbooks, when what you DON'T know is that I am trying to get the courage to get together a kind of portfolio for just such a purpose... Well, it makes a big difference. I sometimes think barnstars are kinda silly things to throw around, so consider this a personal barnstar, from me to you: The Encouragement Barnstar. I appreciate your work on the Ulysses S. Grant article. The photo you put in would be better if cropped closer. The lede photo needs to have a closer image of Grant's face. I recommend cropping the photo to get a closer image of Grant's face.
