We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata ( submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata ( submissions), Sturmvogel_66 ( submissions) and TonyTheTiger ( submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber ( submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn ( submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 ( submissions). Hi, I wonder, where do you exactly stand on those issues? There have been a number of failed proposals, and like many others, I do think there are actually fundamental changes needed for the sysop process. My ideas on that are still too vague and such changes will not pass in the near future anyway.

However, I've been thinking recently that perhaps some less fundamental changes can still be suggested (to adopt a very 'peacemeal' line, then ;-)). Wikipedia has been developing rapidly, and what was acceptable for the community in 2004 or 2005, may no longer be. It was usual for people with 3000 edits to become a sysop in 2004, it's no longer so. One would pass with 14 votes in favour, one no longer does. The community's expectations of an administrator have fundamentally changed in the meantime. Who easily passed a RfA in 2004, might now never more succeed in that process. Given that it is now much more difficult to pass the RfA, it gives a bias against newer contributors. And we don't want an account equipped with sysop tools in 2003 after 300 (!) successful edit to get hijacked and be used for vandalism.

Some sysops have become inactive, some have completely lost touch with the wikireality. Yet they are equipped with considerable powers that in the Wikipedia's generally rather anarchical structure make much difference. Even though the periodical reconfirmation of sysops has not received enough support, sth should be done about it. It might seem odd, but perhaps one could propose a more non-recurring, not to say one-time approach. My gut feelings are, that sysops elected before 2007 should generally be re-confirmed. My idea would be to fix the date (yes, seemingly arbitrary, but so what). Some further clauses can perhaps be applied (in my vision by the formula: inactivity - , having being blocked in the meantime - , ascertainable successful work at articles + and perhaps a few other terms/conditions) so that one wouldn't have to reconfirm some of the more uncontroversial ones.

But for the rest, in all honesty: if someone passed with 14 + votes or even if one has passed in 2007 with 51 + votes after 2 failed attempts and very few article writing makes me suspicious as to the possible sysop qualities.

Perhaps getting rid of the (old) ballast might just as well open the way for those who in the eyes of the community are capable (in current conditions) of successfully fulfilling the tasks we expect sysops to do. Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (t) 18:05, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). I'm certainly noticing that in recent years I'm having to double-check myself a lot more frequently over my actions, and having to jump through hoops that were never there when I started in 2003. I have never been a fan of bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake, which is probably why I'm not an admin and do not want to be. So what do you get for seven years' service to the community? Oh ya, do you happen to have some sources regarding the "world-systems" theory and the effect of the industrial revolution in putting Europe ahead? This is what I feel the article currently lacks. It would be very helpful if some additional information on that could be added. Anyhow, I've responded to your quote on the talk page (keep in mind agriculture is as important to premodern economies as oil is to saudi arabia) and I'd all be for a friendly debate if you wish, but let's not put it on the talk page. And replying to your earlier comment about japan and the middle east, it seems that the middle east was pretty much devastated after the Mongol invasions (and unlike China didn't recover), while Japan had developed somewhat (and also engaged in relatively substantial trading, especilaly to China). Can you please add that source to the article? And when I referred to a debate, I meant a friendly debate between editors on the merits of the theory. From an editing persepctive obviously the theory must be included as an academic viewpoint (I have no intention of not including it, lol). Oh ya, you talk about the "long 16th century" as the point of divergence, but according to my knowledge Gunder Frank, a world systems theorist argues against this and believes that the 19th century was the divergence point. In 2004, you introduced a sentence to the The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. 'In the end, the study of Protestant ethic, according to Weber, merely explored one phase of the emancipation from magic, that disenchantment of the world that he regarded as the distinguishing peculiarity of Western culture.' This sentence is quite close to that from a book - 'Thus, the study of the Protestant ethic merely explored one phase of that emancipation of magic, that disenchantment of the world that Weber regarded as the distinguishing peculiarity...' from this book [2].

That copied sentence remains there. Could you please remove or reword it.

I'm really sorry to say this, because User:Moonriddengirl, everyone's favorite and most overworked editor, would end up saddled with much of the work, and I know my motives may not be the purest due to our previous conflicts, but I think it's time to open Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations on your contributions. Without knowing what the usual threshold is - the above was added in 2004; you performed multiple copy-pastes in 2005 and 2006 - Talk:Władysław_Sikorski#Wikipedia:Close_paraphrasing_in_article, WP:Featured_article_review/Battle_of_Warsaw_(1920), [3] taken from [4], Talk:Renaissance_in_Poland#Copyvio_problems. It's good that you've acknowledged these problems as they were brought to your attention...but you did make some thousands of contribs between the first and last ones identified above (2004 to 2006). I think it's important to note that these are only the ones I have found thru featured article reviews and a couple of other articles I found by surfing articles relating to LT. So I would still think an investigation is necessary, but have posted to MRG's talk page about it. When to cut off the investigation, not sure; I think User:Irpen brought it up at an arbcom proceeding at some point; by his diff at an arbcom proceeding, you did this in 2008. [5] The investigation might be stoppable after some date is found on which you publicly (or privately, if someone wants to step forward with that) acknowledge the problem. I seem to remember you doing so during 2009. It will be a massive problem anyway but some sort of evidence to that effect would probably be taken in good faith as a stopping point and would reduce the workload. Well, I have enjoyed reading the Polish articles. I think Poland's history and people, particularly during World War II, have often been understated and misrepresented in society. It's like some people would never know how courageous the Poles were under such circumstances, especially under both spheres of the Eastern Front. • Pool B's winner was Casliber ( submissions). Awarded the top score for featured articles this round, Casliber writes primarily on natural sciences, especially botany and ornithology.
• Pool A's close second was Sasata ( submissions). Awarded the top score for featured pictures this round, Sasata writes primarily on natural sciences, favouring mycology.

• The second wildcard was White Shadows ( submissions). Someone who has helped the Cup behind the scenes all year, White Shadows said "I'm still in shock that I made it this far" and writes primarily on Naval warfare, especially U-boats.
• The third wildcard was Staxringold ( submissions). Awarded the top score for featured lists and topics this round, Staxringold primarily writes on sport and television, including baseball and 30 Rock.
• The fourth wildcard was William S. Saturn ( submissions). Entering the final eight only on the final day of the round, William S. Saturn writes on a number of topics, mostly related to Texas.

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte ( submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Resolute ( submissions) was not far behind. Candlewicke ( submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Gary King ( submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Suomi Finland 2009 ( submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk ( submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose ( submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. The discussion, now closed, is here. It was advertised on the WikiCup newsletter, and the rules are noted promintently on the signup page. These general rules were useful precisely because they stopped us making arbitrary distinctions- is Nazi Germany offensive? Probably. The Soviet Union? Confederate America? People have tried to use both of them already this year. North Korea would be fine. To give a rather silly but relevant comparison, North Korea is playable on sports video games. Yeah, they're not very liked in the west, but America isn't very liked in plenty of places too. Al-Quaida and the like would not fall under the current rule (perhaps the wording should be changed) and, if they did, would be a good example of why I added "The judges reserve the right to remove any flag deemed inappropriate". Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update. Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board. The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated. I'm going to be away from Wikipedia this weekend, so I figured I'd just leave it for a couple days since I wouldn't be able respond to any questions at the AN. In your opinion, would this be a best posted at the main AN or ANI if it doesn't resolve itself? I'm assuming that I'd leave the tags up until then. Hello Piotrus. Hope you are well. Quite possibly you won't know the answer to this question, but if that is so then I'm sure you'll know who would know. This picture was apparently taken in Rzeszów. It says the people in uniform are German police, but most of them do not appear to be wearing German Order Police uniforms. Do you have any idea on what uniform the three in the background are wearing? Could it be some sort of Schutzmannschaft uniform? Was there a special uniform for the SA in the General Government? That looks great, Piotrus! Thank you so much! :D The one change I would suggest: given this contributors history, we have to presume that any creative text he has added was copied from somewhere. Basic information, like "Soandso was an athlete who did this" is probably okay, but I have yet to find a full paragraph that this guy added that did not infringe. (Many of his articles don't have full paragraphs. He did a lot of stubs with tables.) If you could ask them to "if in doubt, take it out" or rewrite it, that would be fabulous. Hi Piotrus: I'd like to point out that your AutoEd changes to articles, such as this one in Telegraphy are actually regressive, making it harder for other editors with small monitors to properly edit in a cluttered edit box, as well as presenting issues for various spell checkers. Please refer to this MOS guideline on blank spacing/blank lines which states:

• Spaces between the == and the heading text are optional (==H2== is equivalent to == H2 ==). These extra spaces will not affect the way the the heading is displayed to readers; however, in the edit window, the spaces tend to be more compatible with browser spell-checking software.

• A blank line below the heading is optional; but do include one blank line above the heading, for readability in the edit window. (Only two or more blank lines above or below will add more white space in the public appearance of the page.)

Many years ago software writers habitually removed blank spacing due to the ancient very high cost of memory, which also resulted in the systemic removal of '19' from years stored in memory (e.g.: 1967 stored as only '67', thus saving two bytes). In the present day with ultra-low cost memory available, such byte-saving techniques are trumped by the need for more accurate, stress-free editing (and I'm willing to donate more to WP to that end!). I hope you'll be able to assist with improving Wikipedia's articles in this respect by allowing blank space and blank line insertions to persist. What I was trying to say is that your signature is offsetted down. As for the testing range the signature number 1 appeals to me the most as it is unencumbered by the wiki-code and is the best readable of all (but, of course, it is not my business, just an outsider's opinion ;)). Actually i only did the work of anime premiered in September and anime premiering in October. The rest of the work in the letter was put in from different parts of the project. The reward for the statistics completely goes to a bot(dont know who), but not me. The letter is mostly a copy of the project page. A high proportion of the edits seemed to be vandalism or reverts, so to be honest I expect that soon after the six months expires the article will be semi-protected again.
