Probably too late for 2015, but has any thought been put into asking for interior pictures of listed (or other) buildings? Supermarket displays are quite ephemeral and worth recording. Slack Roman fort or Slack Roman Fort? I used the first, I copied Castleshaw but I've found Bewcastle Roman Fort, Hardknott Roman Fort, Lunt Roman Fort, Ilkley Roman Fort and Strutt's Park Roman fort. As the Romans called it something else I thought it should be named like railway stations (Piccadilly railway station). Just wanted a second opinion. I suppose they ought to be named consistently. As you might have gathered from how long it's taken me to reply(!) I'm a bit short of time at the moment. I can potter about a bit on castle articles here and there, but sadly the extra time needed for FAC quality may be a bit out of reach for the foreseeable future. That's the consequence of me being foolhardy and thinking I can juggle part-time post-graduate research with full-time work. But never say never, all it takes is the right castle. I removed some text because I thought the tone didn't quite fit with an encyclopedic writing style. So in the bit which reads "He was embraced heavily in his outset" it's unclear what embraced heavily means. Does it mean he's a fan favourite or that he is well regarded by his team mates? Thanks for uploading recent photos in and around Chepstow. I've removed the one of the Wye bridge, simply because - although more recent - it was taken on a disappointingly grey day and - more importantly - shows the temporary scaffolding that was on the bridge for a few months in 2015/16 for repairs and repainting, but which was removed some time ago. It's not far from me, so I could take a new even more up-to-date photo, on a bright day, and put it up before the bicentenary celebrations later this month. During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Guideline and policy news

• A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. ( T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. ( T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Arbitration

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Worcestershire - one of England's oldest and still existing (with some minor boundary changes) ceremonial and political shires, famous for its nearly 1000 year old cathedral, the River Severn, the AONB of the Malvern Hills, some of the oldest schools in the country, England's fastest growing university, apples, pears, cider and cricket, and of course its world famous sauce. The Wikiproject is now in need of some attention. Created 12 years ago, this project amassed a huge resource for editors working on all kinds of articles and categories related in some way or another to the county. Kudpung is more or less retired from Wikipedia getting on for 2 years ago and it would be good if a group of editors could get it up to date and continue to maintain it.

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

The WikiProject WORCESTERSHIRE Newsletter Issue 3 - May 2023 (Archived here.) Welcome to the third WikiProject Worcestershire newsletter and the first one in (checks notes) THIRTEEN years! When I first joined this WikiProject back in December last year, I was slightly tempted to mark it as inactive, as activity had extremely slowed and there had been no new participants in 3 years. But I have decided to revive this project, as Worcestershire means a lot to me and I know it does for so many others. But as many participants of this project have disappeared completely off Wikipedia, this project is now in dire need of attention and it would be helpful if a group of editors could join me and continue to maintain it. Here goes for the third EXTREMELY irregular news bulletin... What's happened since last time Evolution of Worcestershire county boundaries since 1844 was promoted to Good article on 3 September 2014. Largely the work of Bellow558, a Worcestershire Project member, the article was reviewed by Mike Christie. Hanley Castle High School was was promoted to Good article on 30 August 2012. There are 78 good articles for educational institution of all kinds of which there are 4 GA for secondary schools in the UK. Hanley High School is the first state school in the UK to become GA. Evesham was nominated on 2 December 2010 as a Good Article Candidate. The nomination unfortunately failed due to unforeseen unavailability of the editors working on the article. It only requires minor attention to be renominated. Worcester Castle was awarded Good Article status on 27 October 2011. Largely the work of User:Hchc2009 , the article was reviewed and promoted by User:Malleus Fatuorum. The photo by David Iliff of the medieval cloisters in Worcester Cathedral (pictured above) appeared as picture of the day on 5 October 2016. Urse d'Abetot was awarded Featured Article status on 13 October 2009. Promoted by Karanacs, the article was 96.4% the work of Ealdgyth. It was finally featured on the main page on 14 April 2018. The Battle of Powick Bridge was awarded Featured Article status in 2020 and appeared on the Main Page on 12 February 2023.
