Smolensky District ( Russian: Смоле́нский райо́н) is an administrative [1] and municipal [4] district ( raion), one of the fifty-nine in Altai Krai, Russia. It is located in the southeast of the krai. The area of the district is 2,033 square kilometers (785 sq mi). [2] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Smolenskoye. [1] Population: 23,955 ( 2010 Russian census); [3] 26,033 ( 2002 Census); [6] 40,590 ( 1989 Soviet census). [7] The population of Smolenskoye accounts for 37.5% of the district's total population. [3]
