Wondering how to address problems with this BLP. There are some odd references, such as <ref name="aboutexec">The only senior executive to have had a piano in his office</ref>. Is it better to remove refs like this and have completely unsourced information? Or to remove content not properly sourced? I think there is only one complete ref to an independent source with full details of date and author, the Santa Barbara News Press one. I can't see any RS online that would verify the details of his life, just two reviews on Publishers Weekly, but sme of his career may pre-date online sources. Thanks. Hey! So how do you guys handle BLP's with somewhat questionable notability? Everyone would like to have a Wikipedia page, but many of them I've seen are fleshed out with WP:RSSELF, WP:UGC, WP:SELFSOURCE. How is significant coverage determined? I've found the below as guidance, and it makes sense, but as I'm going through and questioning sources, I'm getting some push back.
Thoughts?
General notability guidelines
If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be notable.
A topic for which this guideline has been met by agreement, is usually worthy of notice, and satisfies one of the guidelines for a stand-alone article in the encyclopedia. Verifiable facts and content not supported by multiple independent sources may be appropriate for inclusion within another article. Slacker13 ( talk) 16:03, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

I created standard sections, but as noted above, all content needs independent references. If you have not been written about by people with no connection to you, there is no potential for this to succeed. If you agree, either abandon it or tag it for immediate deletion. I'm a retired physician and armchair climate collapse nerd, who just read an excellent piece on "permafrost" melting. Like all the articles on "global warming" I've read, the core issue of global heat energy absorption is not addressed. Copernicus projects that 2/3 of global ice may be gone by 2,100, which extrapolates to 2,138 for total ice free Earth and very rapid temp. rise. We appear to be overloading our air conditioning/cooling system, as 1.2 trillion tons of global ice is melting every year. Why is no-one writing about this fundamental existential phenomenon? 198.179.6.168 ( talk) 12:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
From the Ice article: "When ice melts, it absorbs as much energy as it would take to heat an equivalent mass of water by 80 °C. During the melting process, the temperature remains constant at 0 °C. While melting, any energy added breaks the hydrogen bonds between ice (water) molecules. Energy becomes available to increase the thermal energy (temperature) only after enough hydrogen bonds are broken that the ice can be considered liquid water. The amount of energy consumed in breaking hydrogen bonds in the transition from ice to water is known as the heat of fusion." David notMD ( talk) 13:53, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Permafrost contains varying amounts of water and non-water solids. The water, frozen, will have the same heat bufferering effect as ice when it thaws. Some of permafrost composition is carbon (plant matter), which will contribute carbon and methane to the atmosphere once no longer frozen. Consider adding information from the article you read (and a reference) to the effects of permafrost warming at the permafrost article. David notMD ( talk) 14:03, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

I would like some guidance on a page for a person who is notable, but the draft I found is primarily copied from a different source. I originally found the page because it was an expiring draft, and I moved it to the name of the person. So I am culpable here. However, I now realize the page itself is likely a copyvio (per earwig). While not identical to the available text, it's quite close. The page in question is now at /info/en/?search=Draft:Madeleine_Gans. What's the best path forward? Should I have the page deleted, and start from scratch? Or, have the entire article history removed and go from nothing? The copyvio goes back to the beginning of the article history. Hello, I made an account a few months ago and decided to try translating an article on the Spanish Wikipedia, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txoria_txori, because I had been looking for information on this song and noticed that no corresponding article existed on the English Wikipedia. Unfortunately my translation was declined at AfC due to use of copyrighted material. I have been reading Wikipedia policies and now understand that I should not have uncritically translated material from another-language Wikipedia without ensuring that it also fit English Wikipedia criteria (I think the problem is that the Spanish page included the full text of the poem/song, but I am not sure; I also can't remember if I figured out how to actually note that I was translating and not writing. I definitely would have tried to note that, but I might not have noted it correctly.) Since then I've just been doing minor typo fixes and things as I run across them.
I don't have any specific obsession with "Txoria txori" (although I love the song) and am just as interested in translating any other page. I found Category:Articles needing translation from Spanish Wikipedia and would like to start translating some of those articles. However, from my experience I now know that I cannot trust that an article on another Wikipedia will be acceptable on English Wikipedia. I've looked at the guidance on Wikipedia:Translation but is there anything else I can/should do to make sure that my translations fit Wikipedia standards? For instance could I ask an experienced editor to look at my translations before I add them to an article?
Since my first major edit was ill-informed I am particularly keen to make sure that I follow all policies and don't keep blundering around breaking things.

Hello, I was doing some research and found a quote from a wikipedia article I am really interested in using. However, I tried following the citation and bought and read the book only to not be able to find the citation. I wanted to ask for help in locating where this citation came from, if maybe I misinterpreted it.
/info/en/?search=Odette_de_Champdivers#cite_ref-6 : "According to some authors, Odette wore the clothes of the Queen in the royal bed each night, and Charles did not notice the substitution. Honoré de Balzac refers to her selflessness in one of his earlier novels, La Dernière fée: So Abel was like the King Charles VI, that the little queen Odette de Champdivers consoled him while his Queen Isabeau danced with the Duke of Orléans in the palace where her husband was suffering. Monsieur Horace de Saint-Aubin, (pseudonym de Balzac), A. Bobbée, Paris, 1823, p. 71."
The book La Dernière fée (or, The Last Fay *in english*) does not have any mention of Charles VI, or Odette, or have any close matches to the quote. I have been trying to find other ways to find where this quote came from for about a week and have had no luck. I desperately wanted to reach out and ask for assistance in understanding this, or if maybe it was a faulty citation. Gbh452000 ( talk) 17:38, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

A small group of family members have reviewed the Wikipedia page of their deceased (1991) father/grandfather and want to update it to correct some small mistakes, and amplify it reasonably. Interesting guy, pretty widely published by academic presses and peer reviewed journals. Family members are academics in the same discipline as their father/grandfather and a librarian and library worker who did the preliminary work to have the fathers papers accessioned into an academic archive. Is this an advisable project or is there too much COI-like proximity to the subject?
I am to be the editor. I feel I understand the principals of Wikipedia esp. that things need to be cited reliably. The current page is rated "C". We are looking at comparable academics in the same discipline and using these as models somewhat, This biography would fall under several wikipedia projects: Anthropology, Biography, academic, etc. I have added my name to the Wikipedia anthropology project. I have a draft of the proposed changes in "Word--Tracked changes" but we're still working on it. Can I attach the draft in word to my talk page? and ask for pre review say by the Anthropology Project? I'd love to have a guide to help me a long and share the name of the academic and my draft. Hello, a question, I don’t know where to ask it otherwise. Template:PDCFlag suppresses redlinks, if an article of the sports person does not exist. While reading Wikipedia:Red link I would think it’s better to have it the other way around?
According to the Red Link policy “ared link should remain in an article if there is a reasonable expectation that the article in question will eventually be created”. For instance, looking at the upcoming 2024 PDC World Darts Championship at the List of qualifiers all names “in black” have a page at 1 or 2 foreign wiki ( de:Man Lok Leung, de:Sandro Eric Sosing, de:Alex Spellman, de:Reynaldo Rivera, de:Bhav Patel, de:Paolo Nebrida/ nl:Paolo Nebrida, nl:Tomoya Goto/ de:Tomoya Gotō, nl:Dylan Slevin/ de:Dylan Slevin, de:Owen Bates, de:Simon Adams). Not saying they all meet GNG, but “there is a reasonable expectation that the [on of the..] article in question will eventually be created”. 109.38.132.22 ( talk) 08:40, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

When editing an article, I know how to create a cited reference (cite; (templates) cite book). This brings up a handy form so I can fill out all the info. But after I create the citation, I want to go back & edit it. I know I can edit the source code, but it would be easier to edit the form. Can that be done, & if so, how?
I know if I want to use that same citation, I can reuse it (named references). But what if I want to use the same reference but a different page number? I know I can copy/paste the source code & change the page #, but is there a way to copy/paste & then access the form to edit it there?
If I want to use the same source in another article, do I have to copy/paste the source code, or is there an easier way? Thanks. Sunandshade ( talk) 05:34, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Greetings, fellow editors.
I am a new Wikipedia editor and my goal is to help contribute to editing articles on threatened species (mainly Australian Proteaceae and parrot species) to help make knowledge more accessible to the general public, as many people rely on Wikipedia as a source of information. I am currently in the process adding IUCN conservation statuses to species articles that lack them, as well as taking information from reputable and up-to-date sources and adding that information to the species articles.
However, I'm not sure if I am citing my IUCN Red List references correctly, as I have seen some people do it differently. Would anyone be able to help show me how to cite information correctly?
As an example, I will be using the citation for the IUCN Red List status of my most recently edited article, Hakea pulvinifera.
For my citation, I included the title, URL, access date and publisher, using "The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species" as the publisher.
I am not confident that this is correct, which is why I am reaching out for input before I edit any more articles so I can go back and fix them all with the correct information if I am incorrect.
Here is the article I sourced my information from for the IUCN status: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/113088579/113309795
Here is the article I am referring to: Hakea pulvinifera
Thank you for your time. I hope I hear back from someone soon and I hope my edits have been helping to make a positive change for Wikipedia.
Best regards,

Perhaps this topic already exists - if so - please redirect.
I would like to add a 'Selected publications' list to a page/article. The publications can be found on the internet using the automatic citation engine - and added to the References list.
I would (also) like to excerpt a few of the citations from the Reference list and past them into the body of the article without re-formatting them. However I am unable to, for example, copy + paste individual entries from the References list.
I've tried the templates - but there is no automatic citation engine available.
NOTE: I have tried "+" 'references list' - but can only import the full complete references list, and not select individual references.
Hope this makes sense. Thank you! Science and such ( talk) 16:33, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I'm considering creating an article to cover the history of tidal power development. There have been many companies that have developed and tested turbines. Individually, a lot of these would be questionable in terms of notability. However, I think the topic as a whole is notable.
The pages Tidal power, Tidal stream generator, and List of tidal power stations have some of this information, but there is a lot more detail that could be added which would possibly make these pages unwieldy, and I'm not sure exactly fits there anyway. Many of the devices that have been tested are no longer generating power, but I think it would be useful to document these in one place.
My proposal would be to have a short introduction, a section on companies with a paragraph or 2 on each (or a link to their page where notable), and a section with a table with details the turbines that have been tested (what, where, when, etc).
I'd appreciate some feedback on this before starting, hence this post. Thanks :) Drnoble ( talk) 11:25, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I tried to post a wikipedia page over a year ago, which was rejected for failing to provide links. Recently I put a lot of citations up on a new draft and am hoping that someone will be able to check it out and let me know if the listing can be posted? It's about the author, artist, and botanist William A Emboden. There are already a ton of articles on wiki linking to him and I'm hoping to get one made for him - ashe deserves to be listed here for all the writing and research he did - especially on botanics that are still being used and influenced many things being used to date. I understand it can take awhile to create a new profile, but I think I added enough citations for it to get posted. He wrote numerous articles I am still in the process of citing, but I have over 20 sources already. I hope someone can help. Thank you. JasonReBegin ( talk) 01:26, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Clear that User:Tonydavis05 copied Stereotypes of African Americans into own Sandbox without attribution of the source, added content, renamed it Stereotypes of African Americans (edited), and from there it ended up as Draft:Stereotypes of African Americans per action by User:Tagishsimon, who afterward properly identified it as an unattributed copy. The cleanest action I can recommend at this point is that the draft either be Speedy deleted by an Administrator or else tagged by Tonydavis05 for deletion. If Tonydavis05 believes there is properly referenced content that was added to the original article, that should be copied - quickly - to his Sandbox, to be added to the existing article. I just got an update regarding the bidding race for "Coyote vs. ACME":
On December 7 and 8, it was announced that Netflix reportedly offered less than half of the film's budget cost and was turned down, and Paramount had made a bid with a theatrical release plan for 2024. Amazon remains interested, and Sony and Apple have still not made any bids.
According to the film's budget, someone needs to make a bid that is higher than the film's original budget: 70 million dollars
Netflix could have a second chance if they can offer a better deal than $70M.
The goal of the bidding race is to go higher than 70 million dollars.

Hi. I wonder if someone could help me please. I seem to have made a right hash of this. I added a reference which is appearing under external links, but I wanted it to only appear in references. It is there, but appears with an error. It looked fine when I published it, but has now thrown an error and I don't understand what is wrong with it. This is reference 91 regarding Fundex awards (GOODDATA Corp). Ideally, it would not appear under external links at all and would appear correctly under references.
In addition, the row in the awards table that refers to the Fundex Award is a different format from everything else in the table. It seems that other data has been added using a template and I can't figure out how to get this row in the table looking the same as everything else.
If I could just get help to fix this page, I don't think I will have another go ever! I'm traumatised. You can't even seem to delete what you have edited. I didn't know about the sandbox or this site. I need to spend a lot more time learning before attempting changes again!

I'm in the midst of making some minor edits to a rapper's article, and there's a section where a song he was featured on by a notable artist followed by a song he was featured on by a less notable one - "In June 2021, Carti was featured on rapper/producer Pi'erre Bourne's song "Switching Lanes" from his The Life Of Pi'erre 5 album and on rapper Lil 1 Dte's single, "Homixide" from his self-titled mixtape." I have a citation for the Pi'erre Bourne song, but Lil 1 Dte isn't notable enough to have an article written about the track.

Hi, so I'm new to this Teahouse thing (and talk pages in general), and I finished making major changes to a certain (but unknowing) article. I noticed on its talk page that the article was part of the WikiProject Awards group, and that its content assessment and importance scales are set to Stub and unassessed, respectively. I know that higher ranks (eg. Featured, A-Class and Good Articles) need to be assessed and discussed by multiple people, but for the lower ranks, if the article meets the requirements, can I promote these ranks on my own (e.g. Stub → Start; unassessed → Low), or do I need someone's permission? If so, to what extent can I independently promote these articles ranks to?
I'm asking this here because this feed seems welcoming, and there's no activity on the talk page of the article I worked on. - Alex26337 ( talk) 14:30, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

There's a company (grandparent) which had a smaller company (parent), which had 8 divisions (children).
A bigger company (great great grandparent) took control of the main company (grandparent) in 2015, and put its child (great grandparent) in charge of it and 3 other companies (so the great grandparent is now in charge of 4 grandparents)
However the main company (grandparent) still continues to use its name today as its "official company name", even though it's child (parent) is now the "trading name" of the overall brand.
There's not really any mention of the "official company name" so my question is...
Can the "official company name" aka grandparent (which doesn't have an article for some reason) be added as a Parent company of the parent, along with the great grandparent which has already been added?
Also should the great great grandparent be added as the "owner"? Danstarr69 ( talk) 16:24, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Teahouse,
One of my subjects of interests is Australia, its defence and decision makers. A while ago I discovered (wonderfully) that photographs published openly by the US Department of Defense are all public domain. So I've gathered relevant shots onto a photo sharing platform, Flickr, and from there I choose relevant ones to upload onto wikimedia, which, for me, is a really simply process and easy to manage.
All of that has gone well, until, overnight, a user has decided to challenge, it would appear, almost all of those images. Yikes. You'll find that challenge here
My understanding is that images published to the public domain mean that they can exist on anyone's photo stream or file sharing platform, that people are free to "copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially."
I still have plenty to learn here, so am happy to have the process explained to me. I'm very keen to do things the right way, even as I (hopefully) improve articles.

I wanted to cite "The Encyclopedia of Mammals" so found another article that cited it to see how it's done, but that raised some questions. Then checked WorldCat to gather more data. Here's the info I have, followed by my questions. my book = my copy of the mentioned book; Mammal = Mammal article (book mentioned in Further Reading but I assume the format should be the same as cited); WorldCat = info from that cite.
my book has: edited by David Macdonald, assistant editor Sasha Norris
Mammal has: MacDonald DW, Norris S
WorldCat has: authors: David W. Macdonald, Sasha Norris
my book has: this edition published in 2006, copyright 2001, 1st published 2001, reprinted 2002, 2006
Mammal has: 2006, 3rd edition
WorldCat has: 2006, copyright 2001
My book has just the 1st name while others have 1st & 2nd initials or 1st name & 2nd initial. (I know capitalization is wrong in Mammal article.) That's correct info but that's not what is on the book. How should I list the name? My book lists them as editors, others list them as authors. Does this matter? How can I list as editor/assistant editor while using the Cite form.
It looks like the help files say if a book is reprinted (without major changed), I should use the original publication date. If so, looks like the Mammal article is wrong. But do I list the reprinted date anyplace?
As an added complication, this book was also published as a new edition in 2006, but looking at the ISBN, the Mammal article is using the same edition as my book.

To Define my list I did:
< references > < ref name="refname1">citation info here< /ref></ references> (Unlike my example here, in my article, I did not use a space after '< ' - I did it here because if I didn't it was changed how this message appeared).
In my text citation, after the piece of text to cite, I did:

Need help Draft:New Lynn Coalition
Dear Respected Senior Wikipedia Reviewers, I hope this message finds you well. As a new user, I am reaching out for guidance on my first Wikipedia edit, specifically related to creating a page for the New Lynn Coalition. Given that the group is locally based in Lynn, MA, the majority of its references come from local TV and newspapers, and the group's founder is already present on Wikipedia. Initially, my submission was denied due to the inclusion of references from various local sources, which were deemed insufficient. Following this feedback, I removed eight reference links, only to face another denial on the grounds that the information provided did not sufficiently showcase the group. I have attached the link to the organization here Draft:New Lynn Coalition , and I am seeking your expertise in reviewing the third-party media links when you have the opportunity. Your guidance on which references are appropriate according to Wikipedia standards would immensely help me in refining this edit and for future contributions. I am eager to learn and contribute positively to Wikipedia, and your assistance will not only aid in this particular edit but also encourage my continued support for the platform. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. 100.0.214.124 ( talk) 21:02, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi there, I recently published an article. The article was originally called
Ineffective altruism. I then nominated the article for peer review, and two reviewers came in, who put my article back into draft space by highlighting a number of Wikipedia policies that I supposedly did not abide by. I felt like most of their comments were unjustified, however, at times they were very well justified and I was happy that they even raised their concerns. Each time, I propose concrete solutions and ways forward that reach a degree of middle-ground. Each time, they shoot my solutions down and refrain from reaching a consensus. At one particular point, one of them even attacked my field by saying Please, let's not follow the annoying habit of many social psychologists of stating grandiose conclusions based on trivial experiments. They are the laughingstock of philosophers of science.
, which I find very offensive, given that I am a researcher in the field of social psychology. Could you intervene and please help me out? I feel like I am fighting an unjustified battle. The talk page is
Draft talk:Barriers to effective altruism. Thank you so much.

Hi, in my Wikipedia preferences page, I noticed there was an option to switch between different Wikitext editors. When I look at my contribution log, I see tags like "2017 Wikitext editor" or "Visual edit." I like the way the 2017 Wikitext editor looks compared to the default, but I don't want those tags to crowd up my edits. Is there a way to get around this, or a way to configure a different Wikitext editor? I'm open to trying new editors, I just don't know where to find or configure them/their syntax highlighting. Pauliesnug ( talk) 20:24, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
.mw-tag-marker-visualeditor-wikitext { display: none; }
instead, though you'll still see an empty "(Tags: )" if there aren't any other tags attached to an edit. (JavaScript can get around that, but it's harder, and it'll
usually briefly display anyway before vanishing and maybe irritatingly moving the surrounding text around.) If you want to hide either all tags or this specific tag for only your edits, this can be done in the Watchlist and your own contributions list with pure css; doing it in all pages would again need JavaScript with the same drawbacks. If you're asking if there's a way to use the 2017 Wikitext editor without having the tags appear to other users, the answer is no. —

"Cut a small part out of the archive with dd using the byte offset as found in the index." than "You could then either bzip2 decompress it or use bzip2recover, and search the first file for the article ID. "

In this scenario, is it best to leave a "citation needed" tag, or delete the mention of the unsourcable track entirely? EphemeralPerpetuals (they/them) ( talk) 23:34, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

The article Billy Woods, the faceless rapper, has a photo of him performing at a concert in 2022. Woods, a faceless person, does not wish to have his face shown. Both IP and registered editors have removed the image of Woods as for his facelessness. To Define my list I did:
< references > < ref name="refname1">citation info here< /ref></ references> (Unlike my example here, in my article, I did not use a space after '< ' - I did it here because if I didn't it was changed how this message appeared).
In my text citation, after the piece of text to cite, I did:
< ref name="refname1"/> (again, no space after the '<' ) I also tried this with and without "refname1" in quotes. I get the same error.

It's published by Hallmark and doesn't have a date (likely printed late 70's early 80's) so I looked up the artist. This artist, Pat Paris, has no article here but DOES have a Wookipedia article because it seems they illustrated the Ewoks kid's books and might have influenced the later TV show? There's some listings of other books by them on book trading/selling sites but this guy (or girl) has no other info I can find! I don't have enough to MAKE an article.

Pauliesnug ( talk) 20:24, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
.mw-tag-marker-visualeditor-wikitext { display: none; }
instead, though you'll still see an empty "(Tags: )" if there aren't any other tags attached to an edit.
