Hi there,

I got to you referenced from one of the directors of the FL committee and I have a very important question to ask.

My self with a group of other editors have been working hardly in a set of articles that we would like to promote to FL (and potentially the whole thing to a featured topic). We managed to promote one, Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium); but when we started to work on the nomination of the other articles (specifically Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria)), somebody claimed that there are too many non-free images on them and the whole process froze. We have since then prepared for nomination the countries Austria, Finland, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Slovenia and Monaco; while we continue to work on the other countries (we have good progress in Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, Vatican and Luxembourg for example).

The question is: what is your opinion about lists that have different non-free but properly fair-use images intrinsic in the character of the list? The images are not there to make the article look good or to ilustrate the topic, they are the core existence of the article and without the images the article itself makes no sense. Can you please take a quick look at Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) for example and tell me your opinion on the usage of the images?

I do have a strong view about it and I think that we can still be within the guidelines of non-free images use in list articles. I am willing to have a discussion on each topic of that guideline if necessary. Can you please let me know what your opinion is? I would love to centralize the discussion in one place, but I want to know what you think first.

Have you read James Bond (film series) or X-Men (film series)? I feel there's plenty of stuff to merge together, I mean II to IV are a trilogy and the series is divideable into the Bennett/Meyer era and the Berman/Moore/Braga eras, not to mention all the model ships and sets that get reused. I heard they're recording a Shakespeare play in Klingon for VI's Blu-ray disc. Still, DVDs for old movies always pale next to print because studio archives for golden soundbites are always limited. Not sure what Blu-ray can add really, I'm just panicky about my movie collection though, I failed to find Prince Caspian in time for Christmas because the exclusive 3-disc edition sold out and then Zavvi went into administration. Hey, fellow video game dude, how are expansion packs usually dealt with in video game articles? For The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, should I mention The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king in its own section, paragraph, or just a line? Also, as the video-games-image-guy, could you help me find a more appropriate image for Metroid (series)? I found this but it's animated, and I don't think it's official. This might be useful in finding or creating a more appropriate image, perhaps. I don't think there's any official image for the entire series, actually; it's mostly variations of the S with the lightning bolt. Could you perhaps Photoshop something out of that when you have the chance? I also see that the article was recently at FAC, so I'll take a peak at that on more ideas. Thanks in advance! I don't suppose we could use a free image for the series article? Something that is created from scratch, perhaps based on the style used for the Prime series of games, such as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, using the style used for the word "Metroid" on the cover, so in gray, getting wider when going down, etc. Gary King ( talk) 01:54, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't have to be a replica of the logo. It's just that I don't think gray-on-blue is a good combination (probably has some relation to not only having seen that logo in Metroid games/artwork, but with studying Gestalt last semester). igordebraga ≠ 01:58, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Since you have indicated a threat to block me for creating articles that Meowy doesn't like. I want to propose mediation to discuss. Since there is no policy prohibiting their creation and indeed, each day, dozens are created haphazardly anyway, a more uniform looking article is to be prefered. I do intend, unless mediation efforts or a policy change indicates it be barred, to create more articles - and to avoid a wheel war ending up at WP:RFARB - let's get this mediated before you abuse your sysop rights. Your "fact" of a future event is exactly a threat. I request that we go to mediation. Any block of an editor creating sourced articles on notable topics (see WP:OUTCOMES if you doubt it) - none of which has been deleted despite a prior AFD on one of the villages - is so out of step with the proper use of sysop tools that your threat is itself an abuse. If you really consider that creation of such articles is disruptive: I'll give you a bunch of users who have created UNSOURCED geo articles with no more than "X exists in Fooland" so that you can block them too. In short, just because a video game, character, or related topic exists, does not mean it should also exist as a Wikipedia article. Dealing with non-notable topics Articles that do not meet the criteria are either deleted or merged into a relevant topic. WP:Articles for deletion (AfD) handles the deletion of non-notable articles, among other types, and has an established process to begin discussions about reasons for deletion. If an article is a subarticle of a larger topic, merging it into the larger topic article is a more desirable action. For example, the main character of a video may not be notable, but has received some mentions in reviews. It would benefit both topics, the character and its video game, to include the content into the article of the video game; essentially using a small, weaker article to strengthen a larger more notable article. Things to remember The best way to show notability is to provide reliable sources about the topic. Notability is less about keeping articles out of Wikipedia and more about making sure readers are provided articles about significant, quality topics. While you may think a topic is notable, others may disagree. Try to keep a clear perspective when assessing notability so discussions can reach a consensus. AfD is more of a last resort and is not always the best course of action to take. Consider starting a merger discussion first, as some editors may not fully understand why an article they started is not suitable for Wikipedia. Wie geht's Herr Fox. I recently made an edit concerning this article, which you rapidly reverted. I'm just coming here to ask why. I see you're involved in a debate on the article's talk page. I made a brief case for the edit on the talk page but it was to no avail. I completely understand that an "In popular culture" section may get out of hand but such would not seem to apply here; at least not yet. Furthermore it seems to me that WP's policy concerning trivia is avoid needless lists and to work the material into the article, which is what I believe that section was doing. Also based upon this it would appear that there isn't any direct policy regarding "In popular culture" sections. Would you be amenable to a negotiated compromise? Perhaps one that reinstates the section but replaces the business's name, which at a glance appears to be the real crux of the issue, with ambiguous language such as "to a 'famous' D.C. area restaurant" with the citation pointing to the transcripts?

• Maybe I didn't word that as nicely as I ought to have and for that I apologize but I did include "looks like," which isn't a direct accusation (I admit it's a split hair). What I'm curious about though is would you consider the wording I proposed. I'm still thinking there is more to this than trivia. For example, I see you've done some editing on the Klingon article, which contains a rather lengthy and disjointed "popular culture" section that to my eyes reads like a pure trivia section. Yet this section remains unmolested. To be sure "In Popular culture" and "trivia" are related beasts; I think though that the Obama edit clearly illustrates how this food is very native phenomenon. To my eyes a one sentence mention is more like trivia not less like trivia. I always assumed the goal was to merge "one off" content into paragraph form and weed out bullet point lists. Of course WP:TRIVIA says list form may be superior but it also "does not suggest removing trivia sections." I don't think we can both be right on this issue but I also don't think we are both wrong. I noted that your after an image of the retconned Klingons; I wondered if perhaps this one sitting on WP at the moment could be any service: File:ST-TNG_Redemption_Part_2.jpg. Its not the best quality, but it shows the less-budget conscious armour, the head ridges (a higher quality one would probably show how the ridges differ in style between characters more clearly), the affinity for bladed weaponry, the dark dingey environments used in Klingon sets and part of the Klingon insignia. I would also suggest a starship image if you're going to include any commentary on the ships, although that may not be necessary; Klingon starships is probably a workable article with some research (there's enough design information certain classes), a restructure and a cleanup. -- Sabre ( talk) 17:49, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Nah, I'm not done with them, merely taking a break after losing the motivation to do them in the immediate moment. I somehow entered into a Star Trek mood and began redoing Elite Force recently (still need to finish that one's reception section and referencing sometime soon – I hate reception sections), and had in mind that I might try one of the severely neglected Star Trek fiction articles on ships as well. I noticed somewhere along the line that you were redoing the Klingon article – fantastic job there by the way – and thought it could be worth trying to improve the related starship article: it was as good a place to start as any.

While we're on the subject, perhaps you may be able to give me a couple of suggestions as far as that goes. I really don't like the current structure of the article, it feels too listy for my likings. I want to get a structure where I can discuss individual classes as they arise in production history, thereby keeping it in a nice out-of-universe perspective (I've redone the D7 section so far, as it would be the top of any effective coverage as the first production model). However, I just can't get my head around a decent structure to follow. I had considered organising it by series, but then that gets murky for things like the Bird of Prey and the Ktinga, and the section names get long and awkward. Ok, I've broken it into series: TOS, TNG (as blanket for DS9 and Voy as well) and ENT, and ordered by appearance. I might add an extra subsection to the ENT section to cover the reuse of a Ktinga class in " Unexpected" after the producers rejected designs for a D4-class. Can you look over Ealdred (archbishop) and tell me what is missing to make it comprehensible to non-history folks? I'm specifically looking for areas where it's lacking context. I'm not so worried about a CE, although anything you see that's spelled wrong, grammar, etc, would be great if you could correct. I gave you an opportunity to mediate your view that adding articles about towns and villages is disruptive. You cited, WP:NOT, which itself points to Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Common_outcomes#Places showing that all places are notable regardless of size. You have not even found one article added to be worthy of nominating for deletion - if you had, despite WP:POINT, it would be kept as has already happened for one village that someone else nominated. I am not asking anyone to look through anyone's contributions, nor should whether many contributions are made in a short time be of any issue either, because we're not requiring anyone who has a complaint about an article to direct the complaint within XX minutes of its creation. It's just irrelevant. What is relevant is your threat at Meowy's ANI that lingers, that's why I am taking it up with you. Regardless of your prior interactions with Meowy, or none, you have taken his side and threatened to use admin powers to back him up. If it involves Azerbaijan, I see why Meowy gets bent out of shape - he's in ArbCom parole and one or two missteps away from a permablock. But, why is that problematic to you? Well not only is the kitchen discussed because the crew apparently believed real food doesn't exist in the future, it also shows that cool (temperature) feel the ship has in the film. Well it was the last film to feature the whole crew. Obviously WOK is a good pick since the new film's writers cited it as an influence. But I believe the connection doesn't have to overly specific, just obviously, a Trek article on the day the new film is out. If Kirk gets to FA that could be on it. Looking at a few of the Star Trek articles you've worked on, you seem to use "Star Trek" and "Star Trek" consistently in both. Is there a particular reason for this? I vaguely recall some style guideline talking about using italics on franchise names, although for the life of me I can't think where. I was wondering if you'd be game for creating a graphic I could use for a future featured topic on the Sam & Max series, if you've got the time. It shouldn't be too demanding, but as evidenced by my previous attempts with a StarCraft icon, that level of graphical manipulation is beyond me. What I'm after is essentially a free icon based on the generic US police badges you can see in this and this, with similar cartoonish red text stating "Sam & Max" or "S&M" or whichever looks better. I know you're good with images, and I was wondering if you could help me with this image. It was uploaded to Wikipedia with the {{ PD-self}} license. I saw the picture on Flickr here, but there it had an "All rights reserved" license. The uploader of the image has the same name on Flickr ("Mario san"), but is this evidence enough for it being the same person? Hey David. Just wanted to let you know that, when it's feasible to do so, it's better to move an entire page to an archive instead of copy-and-pasting. That way, the edit history is preserved.

Yeah, the machinima needs a bit of cleanup. I'll, however, be working on the top-level machinima article primarily, though. I've realized that, with a good top-down article hierarchy, there'll more likely be some place to merge barely notable productions. I trust that the fiction itself for the really notable productions will be ironed out, eventually. The best way to treat the season/episode articles for Red vs. Blue might be to treat season as an individual movie—heck, Rooster Teeth releases them that way—and to summarize the overall plot in a paragraph or so, and then list the episodes with less detail. —  TKD:: Talk 12:15, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I've read through the article (took a whole hour, you've got a heck of a lot of info there) and made some changes where I thought appropriate. For the clear majority of the article, it seems fine to me. There's only one line I still don't like: the opening line of the second paragraph in the plot section "The Enterprise rendezvous with Gorkon's battlecruiser peacefully and proceed to Earth when the Enterprise suddenly appears to fire upon the unguarded Klingon ship with a pair of torpedoes" - the first part just doesn't flow well to me. I tried replacing that with "The Enterprise rendezvous peacefully with Gorkon's battlecruiser and proceeds towards Earth..." but I'm not fond of that either. Other than that, I'm fine with the rest. Uh hey, sorry, I just sumbled on this. After looking over the article, I have to say I'm impressed, but I noticed that you're not using Shatner's autobiography (Well, the second one, at any rate). If memory serves he goes over the film in quite some detail, I wish I had my copy with me still; the man's a blowhard and some of his stuff, especially about directing the Final Frontier and how wonderful it was, doesn't quite ring true.
