Welcome to the twenty-third newsletter from the Growth team!
The goal of the Growth team is to encourage newcomers to try editing for the first time, and encourage them to keep editing. We want to increase newcomers' motivation by showing them how impactful their edits are.
Newcomers have access to an impact module; you can find yours at Special:Impact. The revised impact module provides new editors with more context about their impact. It will display the number of edits, the number of thanks received, the last time they edited, the number of consecutive days they edited, and the number of views for the articles they edited.
This module will soon be available at our pilot wikis starting December 1. You can already test this new module at Beta Wikipedia. For safety reasons, do not use your regular account and password at Beta wiki. Create a new, specific account for this wiki, with a different password.
After the deployment of Structured tasks, we received feedback from various communities regarding how patrollers of recent changes were feeling overwhelmed by an increase in edits to check, and how some edits were poor quality or of poor relevance.
We made several improvements based on the feedback we received. Several points of improvement have already been addressed:
The Positive Reinforcement project will also address some of the concerns around encouraging newcomers to progress to higher value edits. The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at " Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks.

Asareel, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful message. Please accept my apologies for my tardiness in replying as I was rather tired last night after a long night at work-the same is true tonight. Thank you for adding there. Today, we sing for a Marian feast, I learned that Yvonne Ciannella died, the soprano who impressed me in my first night at the opera, and as she died in March, sadly no Main page reverence is possible, - at least she had a good DYK, at a time when opera singers were considered interesting. I'm proud today that Christiane Hörbiger made it to that corner, and happy that we celebrate the birthday of Jean Sibelius again. - I heard an excellent concert yesterday, by Tenebrae, and a short excerpt of them singing " Deo gracias" is also linked from my talk. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 19:53, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
Today was a day rich in music, with two new pictures, and also rich in WP:QAI contributions on the Main page: the TFA, 2 DYK and 2 RD with members as principal editors. The church pictured there (not by me, nice snow dust and tall evergreen) comes with memories, detailed on my talk. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 20:45, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
Latest pics, snow even here. Today my talk has a DYK that was planned for 22 November, among the recent deaths the author of Duck, Death and the Tulip, and now a choir pic of "our" concert last Sunday, likely to become next year's lead image. Enjoy. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 20:07, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi ARoseWolf, I over read on another user talk page your plans for the Winter and I found it so fascinating and wanted to wish you well during this upcoming period. Also, you talk about "rolling the r" in your name. I for the life of me can not do this and have tried everything. My daughter does it and rubs it in my face. Hi ARoseWolf,
Thank you for leaving an encouraging message on my page. I actually did run into an issue recently, having a disagreement with an editor. You can see our discussion here:
Talk:List of highest-grossing film directors# of films is not accurate
Basically I noticed that the information that they sourced is not accurate, and the source page has problems with how its tallying data and also contains some obviously wrong information. However the other user doesn't want to change anything and considers making these adjustments "original research". I don't know if I should just go ahead and make the edits myself but some of the data points on the page are just categorically wrong at this point.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance. Estariel ( talk) 21:01, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

There are some really damning issues with this case. One especially damning fact with child sex abuse cases is that there are no statutes of limitations. The thing that was really problematic about the statutes of limitations on this case was that it was run as a historical child sexual abuse case. The overwhelming and damning issue is the time between when the original incidents were alleged to have occurred and the amount of time it took for the cases to precede. There was a matter held in court in Ballarat. The issue with the case is clear as daylight that one of the alleged victims was already dead, that provided several issues with evidence and examination.
It also highlights a secondary issue about the case about how long in general it took to proceed. The issue as per always wasn't the strength of the case. A prosecutor rarely brings a matter to court unless there is a significant possibility that they will win that particular case. The real issue I raised above was the amount of time that had expired between when the alleged events occurred and the actual timing of the trial. Had some of the witnesses been alive, and the case been held at an earlier point where the evidence was fresh, and less time had expired in general, there may well have been an entirely different outcome. 120.22.208.169 ( talk) 16:47, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

I've set up this account to make some changes to the Atomico wikipedia page, and to our CEO's wikipedia page (Niklas Zennström), as much of the information is now outdated. As a preface, I am a very blunt thinker and talker. I’m open to debate and criticism of mine or others works because right and wrong doesn’t equate in subjects I dig in to and ask questions about. They are honest in their effort to explore a thought, question, topic or subject to its most objectively truthful end, regardless of popular opinion ot bias or the collective consciousness of the moment. That said I am not one to make a habit of using a platform in a manner for which it is unintended. Ghandi has rightly judged that “even in a minority of one, the truth is the truth.” What is wikipedias general stance on a research page surrounding topics that could be considered sensitive if presented in a neutral and informative format with links for back-up etc? Now that the semi-protects have expired on a few of these pages it seems we will now be dealing with the former IPs in new incarnations as these two accounts. Almost definitely one was created to sock for the other (as one of the first edits of Hidgggf was a test edit made to the talk page of the other [12]).
They still don't use sources, just like when they edited as IPs, and other than malformed edit requests to article talk pages when they were semiprotected, have not made any talk page comments in discussion of their edits. Where do we go from here? Do we ask for another round of semi-protects, and expand to other articles such as Mohawk people and Banda Oriental, which they have now expanded their attention to? Do we ask for blocks? They seem well meaning enough, I think, they just refuse to abide by WP:RS, WP:CITE, WP:VERIFY and discuss at talk.
But four months of reverting nearly identical uncited additions is reaching the "enough is enough" territory. Thoughts? He iro 14:14, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi ARoseWolf, I hope you are well. I am undertaking an article on White Antelope, a Cheyenne chief in the 1800s, perhaps best known for his death song at the Sand Creek massacre: " nothing lives long . . . only the earth and mountains". I know the Cheyenne are very different from the Cherokee, but I thought you might be able to catch some of the mistakes I will no doubt make. This is a very sad article to write, and I want to get the tone and coverage right. I was wondering if you would be interested in offering some feedback on the article once I finish the draft? Let me know, and no worries if not Eddie891 Talk Work 02:10, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
"Relations between the Cherokee and white Americans living on the Great Plains declined during the 1860s, as many Cherokee refused to move to the reservation and instead attempted to remain on their traditional buffalo hunting lands. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, more soldiers were stained in Colorado. In 1864, John Chivington led the First Regiment of Colorado Volunteers began killing, according to historian Stan Hoig, any and all Cheyenne they came upon, ostensibly as a form of retaliation for reported theft of livestock. Several Cherokee settlements were completely destroyed."-- ARose Wolf 14:21, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi Azareel, I want to make substantial edits and additions to a Wikipedia article about my father, Klaus Werner Wedell, who died recently. The current Wikipedia entry is very sketchy, contains multiple inaccuracies, and the headings are confused - eg 'career' contains info about his early life and is followed by a heading 'work'. I've prepared a section on Klaus's early life, citing publicly verifiable independent sources. Hi, A RoseWolf. I was a little surprised to see your response to Bijou1995 on ANI. You advised people who think the user is a sock to open an SPI "rather than make accusations and cast aspersions". Opening an SPI is good advice, but you appear to not have noticed the mass of accusations, aspersions, assumptions of bad faith, and personal attacks coming from Bijou1995, mostly against a named user, just above your post. I've quoted some of them here, and also warned Bijou1995 on their page. You're of course a pretty experienced editor, so I wouldn't have expected you to ignore their bad behaviour and merely commiserate with them about the vendetta they think another editor has, and about their good heart. Are you sure you're on the side of the angels here? Bishonen | tålk 15:50, 27 May 2023 (UTC).

First of all, I want to be clear that I am not asking you chime in elsewhere and I do not want you to do so. I don't expect you would do so, but I am spelling out that I am not canvassing.
I'm writing here because I need... a referral.
Things here devolved in the last day or so and I find myself blocked from article space indefinitely. I was rather broken up over it, but I know the friction between me and the site is for the best, and so I'm kind of relieved! Though I was having fun nerding it up for WiR and other areas, an extended Wikibreak should be a godsend when off-wiki life has never been richer, ongoing health problems aside.
Yes, I'm happy that I'll get hours per week back. Yet I suspect I'll want to draft or edit something in the future... I know myself that well. I put right what once went wrong. But I'm reluctant to request major edits or play in draft space due to likely scrutiny of my articles, drafts, and most especially the reactions my words have brought when I ask questions.
I know you are or were active at the Teahouse. Do you know any admins who would allow me to sometimes ask questions about how things operate on this site? I don't mean about the ongoing issue. I only mean it for the future.
I mean when and where to ask about what I can do, how to approach this and that best, what admins can do, etc.? Until yesterday morning, I would 'be bold', but I've since learned that questions/stating a case and asking whether I'm wrong can be interpreted as wikilawyering. I feel there is no safe place. So I'd like the option to ask a particular admin who doesn't mind my stupid questions on their talk page or getting pinged on mine.
I'm not wording this well. Aphasia humbles me.
Seems it needs to be a place that isn't the Teahouse, so I thought an admin. Who has much patience. Maybe an admin who has worked with kindergartners or parishioners. Who can explain things to me like I'm 5.
Let me know whether this makes any sense and whether you have ideas of whom I might connect with. Just don't reply if you're not interested.
Have a great weekend! Compulsive Researcher ( talk) 19:44, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Sometimes, I feel like making a reply to someone's comment on your talkpage, but then, I don't follow through as I feel overwhelmed with other things. I want you to keep remembering, though, that you are important to me, whether I write here or not. Ergo, here's a friend of mine -a twin from my talkpage today- who would also like to keep an eye on things around here. All the best to you... -- Rosiestep ( talk) 18:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to the twenty-seventh newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
We shared our annual plan, for the period July 2023 - June 2024.
Our first project of the year will be Community configuration 2.0, which helps editors with extended rights transparently and easily configure important on-wiki functionality.
After we finish work on Community configuration 2.0, we will hope to fit in one of the following projects:
Please let us know what you think about these projects on the related talk page, or Growth's annual plan talk page.
We released a new Section-level “add an image” structured task to Growth pilot wikis (Arabic, Bengali, Czech, and Spanish). This task was part of the Structured Data Across Wikipedia project. We are monitoring the edits made, and we look for community feedback as well.
Suggested Edits are now receiving topic predictions via the new Language-Agnostic Topic Classification. This change affects non-English Wikipedia wikis. It will ensure newcomers receive a greater diversity of task recommendations. Before, as this feature was a test, English Wikipedia was used to select topics. The change is gradual as lists of topics are refreshed when they become empty. The Research team will evaluate the impact in a few months. [25]
Starting on August 1, a new set of Wikipedias will get " Add a link": Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia.
The Growth team provides dedicated features to establish a mentorship program for newcomers. Every newcomer gets a volunteer mentor who provides encouragement and answers questions. Communities can set up or join this mentorship system by visiting Special:ManageMentors. This mentorship system is configurable by the community at Special:EditGrowthConfig.
More communities have implemented mentorship. A Wikimedia Foundation data scientist will be looking at the impact of Mentorship. We will look at the impact on Spanish and English Wikipedia. [26]
The Growth team will also host a Mentoring new editors on Wikipedia session at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. Workshop attendees will help brainstorm improvements to Growth’s mentorship features.
We will share more complete experiment analysis for all the three parts of the Positive reinforcement project soon. At the moment, the new Impact module, Leveling up, and Personalized praise are still being A/B tested on the Growth team's pilot wikis.
In the meantime, initial leading indicators for the Personalized praise project have been published. Although this is still a relatively small sample, results seem healthy. They show that Mentors are indeed receiving notifications and clicking through to view their praise-worthy mentees.
The Growth team is currently focusing on IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. It is a project that touches many different Wikimedia Foundation teams. The Growth team will focus on temporary accounts through two main points:
We are still in the early planning stage of the Community Configuration 2.0 project:

My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend with two weddings, so I also like the spirit ;) - Pics to come, I promise one cake, the other was too large! Good music, and better even in the concert ending the second day, - Goldberg Variations theme for an encore, after Dohnányi Serenade, - you would have loved the cellist! -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 21:36, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

This too shall pass. - Ten years ago on 28 August, I heard a symphony, with a heavy heart because of the pending decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX, and not worried about my future here but Andy's. - It passed, and I could write the DYK about calling to dance, not battle, and Andy could write the DYK mentioning about peace and reconciliation, - look. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 14:56, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Whoa, it's been 6 months since I started editing here... time goes fast, I guess :) I've been reflecting on my experience as an editor these days and remembered this back when I was still named Shadow of the Starlit Sky ..... back then I recall you giving me advice to try to stay away from noticeboards as an uninvolved user. At the time I did not understand it but after a while later I realized that although I was acting in good faith at the time I was disruptive. I've just changed a lot as an editor since that piece of advice..... 6 months ago I was borderline disruptive and NOTHEREish in my actions, and now, after 1 GA, 3 DYKs and many, many reverts of vandalism I've fundamentally changed the way I edit, thanks to your advice. Seriously, you saved my life as an editor here. I cannot thank you enough :) #prodraxis connect 17:45, 5 September 2023 (UTC) |

Hello ARoseWolf:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long
Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!
Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

In
this post you wrote I don't see the point in them calling themselves a liar.
Based upon my reading of everything written by Veganpurplefox in that section of ANI, I simply can not understand the basis of your comment. Nowhere does that editor call themselves a liar, or refer to autistic people as a group as liars. Perhaps I am wrong about that, and I simply missed the posts where the editor made such claims. What I did read - and I know I am repeating myself here - was a clear, unambiguous, false statement by Veganpurplefox that "neurotypicals" (i.e., people who are not autistic) are unremitting liars. That claim, I note, has not been stricken or removed, even though the author has subsequently commented in that section, so I conclude that they stand by it. You and I clearly disagree that the statement is a violation of our policies and guidelines against personal attacks. That's fine, as reasonable, good-faith editors often disagree about things. What I don't understand is how you can so seemingly easily brush aside that...claim...by interpreting it as a "point[less]" attack against themself.
As you already know, you are certainly under no obligation to respond to this note, and indeed you can revert this entire section if you wish. I have and will have no problem with that. If you do respond (I will watchlist this page for a short while) that would likely be helpful to me, as I recognize the distinct possibility - it would not be the first time, and unfortunately probably not the last - that I have completely misunderstood things written by other editors. Basically gutted the article. -- RubyU235 ( talk) 18:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
"gut article for lack of sources and egregiously promotional language."They removed content from the article that did not have a cited reliable source ( WP:CITE). They also removed content they felt was too promotional ( WP:PUFFERY, WP:NPOV). We should generally avoid promotional language and state simple facts, nothing more, nothing less. What made it worse is all of this or most f this content was unsourced. As a rule, articles with promotional language can simply be rewritten to exclude the offending words or phrases, however, because there are no sources cited we can not verify the content and therefore can not rewrite. Every editor is responsible for the content they edit into the encyclopedia, including rewritten content. Editors are required to make sure the content they add meets all applicable policies. Bbb23 could not simply rewrite the content without verifiable sources. That does not mean the content can not be re-added in neutral rewritten form as long as it is cited to reliable independent sources. I hope this helps explain the edit in a way you understand. Let me know if you need my assistance further. -- ARose Wolf 11:14, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.
This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.
At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [31]
We released “ add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [32] [33]
We have a few Wikipedias remaining:
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [35]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [36]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [37]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [38]

The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at " Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks.

community mentorship management. We plan to have a more regular newsletter, every two months. We also want to know if the current format suits you! Let us know what you like, what you like less and your suggestions of improvements: leave us a comment, in your preferred language.

I really can't see what I have done wrong here... I apologise for offending anyone but I felt I was doing the right thing.) We have an article on it. Bishonen | tålk 11:07, 30 May 2023 (UTC).

Hello, old acquaintance. I formerly went by another name here. Recently changed it because I realized probably just one user got the old time radio references in it.

Today is Debussy's birthday. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 15:24, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

In
this post you wrote I don't see the point in them calling themselves a liar.
I forgot to mention you in my last question so I will now @ARoseWolf I messaged you a moment ago and forgot to Mention you so you can see it! -- A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb ( talk) 16:15, 23 October 2023 (UTC) I am new to editing Wikipedia and have only viewed articles before so I am still figuring all this out. I only just read your Mentor page and learned that I should @ you in a message so sorry I did not in my past message. It should be right before this one on your page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb ( talk • contribs) 16:22, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi, can you help me understand what occurred here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1121012172

Your Opinion is More Important than You Think Barnstar | ||
HELLOOOO!!! I am here to thank you! You've been kind, and respectable during the ANI dissuscion with Cookie monster and the other user (cant remember how to spell their name, lol). And I would just give you a plain ol' special Barnstar, but then I went to tell Cookiemonster something the other day (forgot what I was gonna say), but then found this [ talk page thing you wrote] asking him to apologise. And then in the ANI, you told me not to apologise, and you explained out nobody outranks anyone on here. So so, for your kindness, and being a great person even when not asked to be kind, you get this special barnstar. (sorry for the wall of text) Babysharkboss2 was here!!
It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review
the candidates and submit your choices on the
voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{
