Shemysheysky District ( Russian: Шемыше́йский райо́н) is an administrative [1] and municipal [5] district ( raion), one of the twenty-seven in Penza Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southeastern central part of the oblast. The area of the district is 1,688 square kilometers (652 sq mi). [2] Its administrative center is the urban locality (a work settlement) of Shemysheyka. [1] Population: 17,661 ( 2010 Census); [3] 19,063 ( 2002 Census); [7] 22,714 ( 1989 Soviet census). [8] The population of Shemysheyka accounts for 36.9% of the district's total population. [3]
