Frequently asked questions

Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

How to promote an accepted hook

• See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
• In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
• In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
• In the prep set...
  • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
  • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
  • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
• Back on DYK nomination page...

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

• Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
• Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
  • View the edit history for that page
  • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
  • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
• Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
• If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

I have pulled this nom from prep, as it fails to include a summary of the book's contents and thus fails WP:DYKCOMPLETE. It also contains at least two errors, one which says Evanier "obtained" artworks from Kirby "while working for him" - he only obtained access, and not apparently while working for him, and another which says the book was met with "positive" reviews when in fact it was panned by The Guardian critic. OlifanofmrTennant The summary needs to present a complete but not overly detailed picture of the book's entire plot. It should provide enough detail to give the reader a general picture of the book's contents. It should not be too vague (which it currently is) nor should it be overly detailed. It should be a summary. See MOS:PLOT and Wikipedia:Summary style for guidance. I would suggest removing the bulleted point by chapter. It isn't entirely necessary to break down the content into chapters. It would be better to concentrate on narrative. What is the story being told? Summarize that story. It might be helpful to think about how you would summarize the book if you were writing for a summary on the book jacket of the back of the book, or if you were having to write a book summary for an English class, or an abstract for a journal article book review in which a summary is provided as part of a review. All of those require narrative and details but still succinct writing with an overview scope. I took a re-look and I think the summary is now sufficiently in-depth to pass WP:DYKCOMPLETE. I would have preferred a paragraph structure with smoother prose, but that is no reason to hold up a DYK review. All other DYK criteria check out. However, portions of both the Alt1 and Alt2 hook facts are not currently in the article. The quote "nowhere near finished" is not in the article, and there is no mention of a friendship between Evanier and Kirby. OlifanofmrTennant Please add citations directly after each hook fact. Any sentence with a fact in a hook must have a citation to pass DYK review. In just rechecking Alt2, the sentence with the hook fact lacks a citation and the text that's in quotes in the hook is not in quotes in the article. Is this a quote? If it is it needs to be in quotes in the article's prose. If it's not a quote then it should not be in quotes within the hook sentence. I'm not going to even look at the other hooks until you have fixed this one and can assure me all the necessary citations are in place. @ OlifanofmrTennant In looking at the Alt2 hook fact, it is not a quote of Evanier directly but it is a quote of The Guardian. The text needs to attribute it to The Guardian in quotes in both the article and the hook, or its a problem with WP:Plagiarism. This needs to be fixed. We can't promote an article with plagiarism issues. Now that I've seen this, I'm going to have to go through all the sources and make sure there aren't other issues of non-attributed text or close paraphrasing. I had trusted the original reviewer had done this, but I'm going to have to re-review with a careful eye on any copyright violations. In the mean time, please put the attributions for this quote in the article. Also, I was asking earlier for you to confirm that all the citations were in place for the many alt hooks you proposed. I don't want to have to keep coming back here and asking again for more citations. Every hook fact must have a citation immediately following the sentence of the hook fact. This may mean we duplicate citations in ways that we may not do when not featuring an article at DYK. • • Comments: Well done for creating such an article. However, to make this article more presentable as I mentioned in the Talk area of the article that the Japanese references in the article need to be replaced with English. Both JBIS and Netkeiba have English and can readily be used as references.
  • The statistics needs to conform to what is used in the English wikipedia space. There are columns with abbreviations which as specific in Japanese form reader but for the US/English make no sense. Also the odds are not displayed as payout coefficients. • This is a comment and not a review, but even as someone who's watched Uma Musume, I'm not a fan of the hook. It's more about Fujita or even the game itself than the horse, and the guidelines say that hooks that are only tangentially about the bolded article should be avoided. I guess not everyone here knows Japanese so let me put a rough translations of the headline here: "[ Saudi Derby] Uma Musume's Fujita Susumu Got First Overseas Graded Race Victory, Owns Forever Young '[I] won'". If you google Japanese news articles about Forever Young, you will find it is not rare for them to mention Uma Musume at the same time.

Overall: Thank you for this positive article about a racehorse. The picture is nice, too. Just two issues:

• (1) Earwig picks up only one phrase: the track record for the distance by about two seconds. Please rephrase it, to avoid copyright violation..
• Hooks: ALT0 is fine. We are talking about a racehorse here, which is not a person or a pet. In this context it is a sports icon and the property of an investor (Some of us may not like that, but that's not the point. The point is the facts). So we must compare it to articles about racing cars, racing bikes etc. where riders, owners and winnings get all the attention.
• (2) In ALT1, the word "someone" is a bit weird, even a bit creepy. Maybe name them - or at least their trade or position?
• Re article content: notability for this subject seems to be about the winning record, which is a good one in this case. and the winnings are tabled in full in the article. So no problem of content there.
• I have given the article a minor copyedit, which does not affect DYK.

• Please remember, it is not good practice to copy and paste copyright source material into an article, and then try to rephrase it. You always end up with copyright bits remaining. The best way is to read it in the original, try to remember it, then write it in your own words in the article. If that is really too difficult, then copy it as a formal quotation into the article, with a citation at the end of it. DYK reviewers will usually spot any copyvio, so it is a waste of your own time and ours if you copy and paste with no quotation marks. No matter how experienced we are, we editors all have to work like that. Can I suggest some edits to the hook to make it clearer what happened? I'd suggest something like Humanitarian and aid organizations suspended their operations in the Gaza Strip after seven World Central Kitchen aid workers were killed when their marked cars on a preapproved route were bombed by Israeli drones. I think its really important to make clear they were in marked cars, they were also on a route approved by the Israeli military. Makeandtoss what do you think? Also have any additional sources been published that would resolve the dissagreement above? If not maybe a third party could be involved to help resolve if the sourcing meets Wikipedia's rules. I would suggest not getting in a back and forth over issues like this, because if you argue its only likely to tank the DYK approval. @ Launchballer I hear you, but from a DYK reviewer standpoint this is ready to go. There's nothing more on our checklist for the reviewer to do, and the nominee has done everything they need to do. Obviously, the promoter will need to evaluate stability because it is a current event. Due to the backlog there will be a natural signigicant delay anyway before this gets put into prep. I think it best that we leave it to the promoter to determine when its stable enough to move it into the queue. That's not something we need to worry about from the DYK evaluator standpoint. 1. Her name. I would not call her Kimball until she is married.
2. I would - as you know - whenever a composition has an article, mention the composer only by last name without link, to avoid two links in a row, and to link the more specific thing. People who really don't know Rossini can find that in the Stabat Mater article, - Stabat Mater as a standard Latin phrase like Magnificat not needing italics.
3. GSL - I would link to Großes Sängerlexikon, - as written, with the two authors, it sounds as if two people had arrived at the same view independently. I strongly recommend to use the actual link to page in the latest edition.

Yes, I'm a native German speaker, but unfamiliar with the terms to describe voices in English. "geführt" suggests "in control" and an even production of lines without register breaks, but is there one word for it in English. Source 2 states: "In 1936 there were 48 so-called sit-down strikes. In 1937 the number increased to 477, but by 1938 they decreased to 52. There were only 6 strikes during 1939 in which all or part of the strikers remained at their workplaces for one or more days after ceasing work. he number of workers idle in connection with these 6 strikes was 3,416, although the number participating in the sit-down or stay-in feature is not known."

This sentence involves a very encyclopedic form of synthesis in that it adds numbers from two consecutive studies by the same source. Similar synthesis, but without inclusion of the latter number appears in Sidney Fine's book Sitdown, cited in the article.

I've reviewed the Earwig similarity report, which highlights passages that are either in quotes or comprise part of citations (including the journal name and another cited article). The longest passage is the summary of the Matignon Agreement, a quotation I don't think I can improve upon. I've revised the article to reduce the amount of material directly quoted from Torigian and from Adamic, but keep Adamic's longer definition and Torigian's POV that the mid-1930s strikes were a distinct phase of using the tactic. @ Sammi Brie Thank you for the copy edit. I appreciate your help. As for the wording... this isn't a case of improper word redundancy. There isn't a way to remove the word Pennsylvania as the proper names of both these organizations include that word. The University of Pennsylvania is the University of Pennsylvania, and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. If we remove the word Pennsylvania from the university it could be any university rather than the well know Ivy League school. Likewise, if we remove it from the court, readers would likely assume it was the national Supreme Court and not a state Supreme Court. That's fair. The wording may read awkwardly to some people even if it is technically a necessary redundancy. I personally would pick it anyway because I believe it is the most interesting fact (to me anyway) among the hook choices. • Will perform the review. Have a mild interest in the article, and just found out Jim Steranko did concept art for Coppola's Dracula; what a nice coincidence. Anyway
  • The article is new enough, having been created only about 8 days ago, which is when this nomination took place. It also has the appropriate length, being very in-depth, and well-sourced; most sources are offline from books, but I'm assuming good faith, especially given the nominator's track record. It is very much presentable, and has three images; one is the writer-artist and is CC, while the other two are the cover of the last issue of this story and an example of Steranko's visual style, which is brought up in the article itself, making them both appropriate.
  •  On hold All of the hooks are present in the article itself and properly cited. Finding the best one is somewhat tricky, as there's what the nominator finds most interesting, what I find most interesting, and what will help the article achieve the most views. Hook #3 is mildly interesting as you have the primacy effect, but I don't think it will hook many people in, so it's the other two. Either one could work, but I'm leaning more with Hook #1, mostly because it also references Stan Lee, which is a name that will attract views. The mention of a "dispute" between them is also kind of juicy. Admittedly, I found the full context behind their "dispute" kind of boring (lol), but at least the hook did its job. A new article that is barely long enough. The hook is interesting so is the galaxy's shape. QPQ unrequired and there are no copyright issues with the online sources. However, there are sourcing issues. The lead includes multiple statements that are not present in the body of the article or that the source that is supposed to cite them doesn't mention them.

• It has an elongated and flattened shape, with a maximum diameter that extends for approximately 2,700 light years.
• The new stars are distributed in about ten groups and have a mass corresponding to about one million solar masses.
• The starburst is believed to have begun approximately one million years ago following the galaxies' encounter with a filament of intergalactic gas.

After that, the following statements lack an inline source:

• "It has also been informally called the Rocket Galaxy or the Firework Galaxy due to its "trail" structure and brightness at the head."

Article is new and long enough. Sourcing looks good though Earwig found a handful of word-for-word similarities with "theage.com.au" source. A minor issue with each of the proposed hooks: ALT0 says that Williams was Victoria's most high-profile prisoner - the body of the article supports that but the sources seem to claim he was just a high-profile prisoner. ALT1 says they threw feces at a member of the jury but the article and sources only say "excrement". Both hooks are interesting however. @ Found5dollar: Thank you for the review. I edited the section about the imposter which now reads " The theater hired a doorman who said he was oscar award winning actor and boxer Victor McLaglen, but he was an imposter. Victor McLaglen exposed the man as a fraud and revealed that the man was actually his brother Leopold McLaglen". Changed the terra-cotta bit, the actual source language is "a great deal of the design credit must be given to the terra-cotta supply company in Chicago." So my error was in thinking it was a company rather than a generic random supply company- I fixed it. Interesting bio on fine sources, no copyvio obvious. I like the original hook and approve that one. It clearly says that Spider is a Black woman musician, which I miss in all ALTS, and actually also in the lead of the article; I think that her Nigerian background should be mentioned there. For what it's worth, I initially didn't really think the tugboat thing was that interesting (it has to do more with people protesting Julia Rice, who just so happened to live in the house). I can't see the full context or what source he cites, but I looked it up and ran the numbers for 1989, at which point the number of infections was 20 times larger in the US which also has 6x greater population. That does point to a substantial difference but doesn't support Kirchick's argument. I would prefer to cite epidemiologists for claims about the causes of different prevalence rates.

Stand-alone "defense" and "criticism" is typically integrated into one reception section, maybe put the defense last since the criticism section sums up the overall view.

"In 2015, following the release of the short film When AIDS Was Funny, renewed criticism from progressive media ..." I don't see where the sources discuss progressive media. If they are being cited as examples of progressive media, this paragraph likely falls foul of WP:NOR (and UNDUE).

"However, it is controversial whether Reagan himself could be considered homophobic, or if his personal views on homosexuality affected his AIDS response." part 1 is a false dichotomy, part 2 is unprovable (and I'm not seeing anywhere the opposite argument is made). The ultimate controversy/criticism is not about what Reagan believed but what he did, the article should reflect the bulk of the legacy section.

That would would be consistent with the Maverick Guide guide source and not change up the current before-during-after structure. I could also change the sentence in the Clearance section to say "completely deserted by 1818" to avoid any ambiguity.

Interesting life and work, on fine sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. I approve the hook, and it goes well with the current trend for short "hooky" wording. I wonder, however, if - since her name doesn't give much clue to where she comes from - some hint at place and/or time might add interest. Overall: I prefer ALT1 to ALT. The hook length is acceptable for both. ALT has a couple of issues: the title of the article does not appear, but more importantly, the idea of the office's powers is not clearly conveyed: it currently says "for over 200 years until 1968 with the power to prevent ANY new play from being performed". However, those powers were somewhat restricted after 1843, so to say ANY new play could be restricted after 1843 is perhaps misleading. @ Grnrchst: Yes, but all of that relies on the reader having knowledge of what that movement was and who it involved. For a Wikipedia reader who follows the hook to a topic that they aren't knowledgeable about, none of that is obvious. So I would suggest adding a sentence or phrase later in the body that in which you explicitly use the term Narodnik, with a citation to something that clarifies or at least uses that term.
