Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Grapple X ( submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Casliber ( submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's Muboshgu ( submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Matthewedwards ( submissions) and Grandiose ( submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, Ealdgyth ( submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Dana Boomer ( submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Stone ( submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. Jarry1250 ( submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, " Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Hi There,

First let me thank you (belatedly) for welcoming me and giving me my talk page.

Now to my issue. Yesterday I created a new page: "George W. Byng". This seems to have attracted many edits since. But there is one editor who keeps editing out changes that I now make. In my view, it is good English to refer to someone's name once in a paragraph and then refer to him as "he" after that. What he is doing is changing all the "he's" to "Byngs". So every sentence starts with: Byng, Byng, Byng etc.

I cannot find anyway to contact or email this guy - not even as I have been able to email you on your page. So it is very frustrating for me considering the amount of work that I put into this article. Wikipedia help does not appear to give any clear instructions how to contact another editor.

I don't wish to be too negative, but this is quite upsetting for me right now.

Piotrus, you seem to be on a sweep going through multiple articles, and tagging any which are using a different reference format than you prefer. As we discussed several years ago, it is not required for an article to have inline citations. Having sources at the bottom of the article is sufficient, and tagging such an article with {{ nofootnotes}}, is, in my mind, just cluttering the wiki. Especially because you don't seem to be at all interested in improving the articles yourself, tagging does not seem appropriate. See WP:CITEVAR: "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference." Surely there are other things which would be a better use of your time, than re-tagging articles which we already argued about, years ago? -- El on ka 22:22, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Piotrus, really, sweeping through multiple articles and posting on their talkpages that they've "failed" is not helpful. Rather than being so negative (especially since these article-writers did not request reviews), it might be better to post something more positive, like, "B-class review: This article is currently at Start class, but could potentially be improved to B-class if it had more citations." I am aware of the previous nomination. I came across it while doing research and clean-up of Ad serving. Made substantial improvements to the one that was nominated for deletion. Maybe not? Let me know what you think after comparing the two. From the comments on the previously deleted page was for little covered and no notability. I agreed until I researched a little more. The notability that I saw deals with the invention of the single ad platform. I also tried to make the article "non-advertising" and more objective. Also, trying to search for citations was hell. Everything that you try to search for about ad serving comes up with some type of affiliate site or promotional website. There were two reasons why I decided not to include the girl in the yellow dress in the painting guide:

1. You can't see her face, so "identifying" her necessarily amounts to wild speculation;
2. Even if this is Marianna Dekertówna, she doesn't seem to have been particularly notable. I doubt she would meet Wikipedia's notability criteria.

all the modern regiments (articles), are based on Sawickies linage and honors/heraldry compilations. which is available at librarys, unfortunatly if the unit was not brought forward to the modern system, its gets real difficult. another words all I know is whats in sawickies:) I think most of the National guard units that were brought forward, were the numerical "Firsts" IE- 1thru 10. 65th NY and 71NY. are anomlies, that kind sliped thru the cracks. • to bring you up to speed Infantry Branch (United States) (read Organization) around WWI the state militias were renumbered, and thay started putting togeather Lineage and honors certificate wich is a different office than Heraldry. so you never saw the data in one source. in the late 50's Mr Sawickie compiled all the units. that were brought forward, and published the Infantry, artillery, cav. ADA, and armor, this is the only "complete" resource for these units. now the center for military history will issue a certificate to active units which is kept on file in the unit headquarters, and photocopies will be made to pass out to soldures, to memorize for soldure of the month boards, so theres lots of these photocopies floating around, but its kind of a hit and miss proposition, ok so far? so heres the giant catch 22, sawickies is coppritten. but you cant coppyright government documents. (this is a real hot button for me because theres lots of war profiteers out there scanning manuals and putting there coppyright on them). my motovation in transcribing them was so that obscure units would pop up in cross references my first expermental linage was the 157th Field Artillery Regiment (United States). unfortunatly the coppyright bots flag every thing thats been transcribed to some mom and pop/museum website, which of course are coppwriten. I put up the linage certificate page to try and help people understand what a linage is, and started linking it as the header, in my mind its a no brainer, a Government document cant be coppwritten. it doesent matter what the source is. well I guess that didnt help because then all my headers got delinked. • back to new york, I use this page as an index Coats of arms of U.S. Infantry Regiments so what you see is generally what has been brought forward, I fleshed out the "100 series" but theres been an ongoing argument about using the page as an index so I stoped there, if youv studied one of the linages you will note a lot of comings and goings of company size elements, and cross branch redesignations, so 58th NY could be (or a company sized element of it) could be now the 1334th underwater mess kit repair detachment, on the other hand most of the high numbered civil war units were only around as long as there 1 year inlistment. you could write the center for military history and put in a request, but if you ever got an answer it probably would only be a couple of dates and muster places. you might be better off hitting up new york sources like the library, or national guard museum. also getting on a reenactor forum could generate some leads, as well as the geneoligy forums, Brian in denver ( talk) 20:35, 17 May 2012 (UTC) (PS the Geneoligists are good at finding muster rolls)

Hi Piotrus. Would you care to take a look at the Bo Xilai page? I thought this may be of some interest to you. There are two issues that I think would benefit from your input:

• First, the page has been the scene of an edit war for the last day and a half. The dispute, as with many previous disputes on this page, concerns a paragraph describing Bo's involvement in the persecution of Falun Gong and consequent lawsuits that were brought against him. Editors previously hammered out a tenuous consensus, which I (regrettably) disrupted with this edit [2]. There is now a lengthy talk page discussion on the matter, [3] which includes some proposed wording for the page. Unfortunately it appears deadlocked, with changes now going undiscussed, and the conversation seems derailed. If you are so inclined, perhaps you could take a look at the various proposals and iterations, and propose a possible compromise.
• The page is a good article nominee, and was passed this morning. Wizardman suggested a second opinion would be in order. [4]

I have tried talking this through, but cannot make sense of the opposing arguments on the talk page. At this stage I don't know what to do, and while I am sorry for dragging you into this, any advice you may have on the most suitable dispute resolution or mediation process would be appreciated. We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Cwmhiraeth ( submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Grapple X ( submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Miyagawa ( submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Casliber ( submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, Muboshgu ( submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. I saw that you have re-uploaded my map on the Honorverse page. I tried to take part in the talk on this map but Wikipedia beat me. I don't know if you are aware but there is a new version at Honorwerseglossary. It takes into account data from previous books excluding A Rising Thunder which was published in March. Also I would like to ask for a correction in the text under the map. There is information that the Czech side http://harrington.suewebik.net/svet/mapy.shtml is mine. This is not true. Hi Piotrus, on VM's page you said "I don't think we can consider tabloids reliable." I still don't understand why being a tabloid is important :/ The ref is just to show that the cake is notable (since apparently thousands of instances of the cake on the net isn't deemed enough). Hi Piotrus, I'm well acquainted with RS policy, yet there are grey areas and cases where one should use one's common sense. RS says "Whether a specific news story is reliable for a specific fact or statement in a Wikipedia article will be assessed on a case by case basis" - so, is Super Express reliable for a cake being notable? Being tabloid does not mean it can never be used. Dull, uncontroversial facts do not need exceptional sources, I'm sure you'll agree.

Not sure what you mean by "are you planning to write it?" I've added some from Junge's memoir to Wolfsschanze, but the comment at Talk:Strategic bombing during World War II was designed more to generate debate and garner info, if possible.

Piotr, in response to your question, no, I don't have the expertise. I do have a couple of books on the subject (among my 100s of books on WWII, etc.) and possibly could make intelligent editing contributions, but it would be up to someone else to draft a separate article. That someone should be familiar with the United States Strategic Bombing Survey, known as USSBS. The existing article doesn't appear to be very detailed.

When I originally referred to Bombing of Germany I was ignoring the fact that it redirects to Strategic bombing during World War II. I guess there should be separate articles on Germany and Japan, and perhaps Britain as well, although the so-called Blitz was nothing like what happened in Germany and Japan.

If you have some time to review the quality of some articles, we're using the results for a really important research project that will help shape the future of the US/Canada Education Program. For a few projects, we're on a pretty tight timeline and are really eager to have many more of these articles reviewed over the next week. However, we think it's most useful to come from experienced Wikipedia editors.

I have gone through each class to prioritize for various projects, and everyone on the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation would be extremely grateful if you could participate by reviewing a few articles ('pre' and 'post' versions). If we can rally a lot of editors to review one or two articles each day, we will be able to make the most use of this research for our tight timeline. As many of our Ambassadors have requested it, we are really eager to find out which classes have been successful according to the Wikipedian standard.

Hi Piotrus.
This discussion suggested me a following idea. As a result of this amendment request the remaining sanctions per EEML will be (hopefully) lifted. However, informally, some stain still remains on the EMML members, and the discussion of their old sins still starts spontaneously from time to time. I got an idea how to remove all remaining stain from the names of ex-EEML members. Two years ago we discussed some modifications to the EW policy that would make resurrection of the mailing list tactics senseless. I mean this discussion. In connection to that, I propose the following. What if all ex-EEML members will openly come together, discuss this or similar modification to the policy and propose it on the policy talk page? If they would be able to persuade a community to make such changes, that would be so convincing demonstration of their good faith that all remaining memory about their bad faith would be wiped off once and forever. What do you think about that?
That step would be extremely important, taking into account that noone can guarantee that no other mail lists are currently active in Wikipedia.

Please do me the courtesy of not derailing it by discussing something that is not relevant to that request, you are most welcomed to take it elsewhere. As to your specific proposal, you have not demonstrated that a problem currently exists and adding it to EW policy would be a case instruction creep.
