2008 submarine cable disruption

I provided a citation supporting the removed information on the talk page. Did you check the talk page before reversion? Wzrd1 ( talk) 00:27, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

@ Wzrd1: putting a citation on the talkpage is great. Putting a citation on the talkpage, without including it in the article, and reverting without mentioning that this source exists, is not. If you have a citation incorporate it into the article. Ironholds ( talk) 01:44, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
@ Wzrd1: I have now reviewed the citation. Where does it say anything about the Snowden-related allegations? Ironholds ( talk) 01:45, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
As Snowden never made the allegations, but an industry group speculated on sabotage, I fail to see the point of adding a citation to a non-extant section. Unless I misread the excised part, which that time period was long pre-Snowden leaks. BTW, I was in Qatar during that period and had severe network issues on our base. Wzrd1 ( talk) 01:48, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
@ Wzrd1: what? You clearly seriously misread the diff. The diff involves the removal of an uncited section that claimed the NSA was cutting cables to make interception easier. The diff did absolutely nothing for the section about sailors cutting cables. This is not a "non-extant section" it's the highlighted paragraph in the revert. You've been undoing my edits because you have a citation that's nothing to do with what my edits were removing. Ironholds ( talk) 01:52, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Crud, it looks like I swept yours up with another, or tried to. That's what I get for trying to edit while at work. Wzrd1 ( talk) 01:56, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

"On Monday, 18 February, the International Telecommunication Union said that the damage could have been an act of sabotage. The UN agency's head of development, Sami al-Murshed was quoted, "We do not want to preempt the results of ongoing investigations, but we do not rule out that a deliberate act of sabotage caused the damage to the undersea cables over two weeks ago."" was what I was trying to kill, due to the later prosecution. Wzrd1 ( talk) 01:57, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Gotcha. Okay; I'm going to assume I'm safe to remove the uncited paragraph, then. Ironholds ( talk) 01:58, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

I need a big favor from you

Hi, Ironholds. I'm sure you know me from around Wikipedia and IRC - It's great to talk to you and run into you on a daily basis. The reason I'm messaging you is because I've been somewhat considering the RfA process recently, and I saw that you are listed in RRN. I'm honestly not looking for a nomination at this time; I'm just looking for someone to review my contributions and give me honest feedback regarding my candidacy if I were to (hypothetically) run for adminship today. I was wondering (and would be very, very grateful) if you could evaluate my contributions and logs, and give me honest and down-to-earth feedback regarding my (possible) candidacy and if I would make a good administrator. I'd want to know ... How would you vote? What bothers you? What am I doing wrong? What am I not doing that I should be doing? You will not hurt my feelings - I don't want you to hold anything back. Would you be willing to do this for me? I give you my most sincere appreciation in advance. Cheers, and happy editing. ~Oshwah~ (talk) (contribs) 22:51, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

I'd normally be happy to take a look but I'm actually going out on holiday to Vermont tomorrow, and don't know how much time I'll have :(. What's the urgency? If the answer is "not much" I'd recommend pinging me next Monday-Tuesday, when I'm back :). Ironholds ( talk) 01:30, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Robert Leith-Macgregor

I am trying to find out some info for an old guy I know about an Admiral MacGregor (British Navy 1940s). Your page mentions that the above was the step-son of an admiral. Do you remember where that info came from and how I could research further?

Thanking you for your help

Stoorybrig ( talk) 15:04, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

@ Stoorybrig: it came from a news article in The Times which is unfortunately now paywalled (I can grab a link if you'd like). Your best resource is likely to be the London Gazette: all commissions are gazetted, so appear there. I can't imagine there were many Admiral MacGregors in the 1940s, so you may be able to narrow it down by looking for the date of his promotion and getting a full name out of that. Hope that helps! good article about Marie Poussepin even better

i hope you dont' mind me correcting terms in the article

/info/en/?search=Marie_Poussepin

- order, church and congregation put in their respective better positions; in the article they were used rather freely as if interchangeable. :) (to found new order is difficult, and not done anymore; newer similar institutions are called congregations. and our friend marie did not attempt to found new order, just sisterhood under wing of Dominican order.)

but i don't know how to correct DYK on wiki main page. that's the problem.

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better

Hello!

First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)

Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej ( talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello! Just sending a reminder to complete the survey linked above. (This is the only reminder I'll send, I promise.) Let me know on my talk page if you have any questions. Thank you!!! Harej ( talk) 22:22, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Hey

Are you actively editing these days? You've been awfully quiet of late. Just thought I would stop by and check up on you. Dirtlawyer1 ( talk) 06:30, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Honestly, not really. The longer I go on the more toxic I find the community as a whole - and I don't particularly enjoy contributing in the absence of a community. This toxicity isn't new - it's always been there, and heck, I've contributed to it in the past - but what is relatively new is how we indulge it. How arbitrarily prohibitons on it are enforced, and how easily contributions become a shield to justice. The person who fed into that is not who I am now, but contributing makes it very easy to be that person. So I've been trying to stay away from everything, because it makes me rest easier and it avoids creating a situation where I feel drawn to that kind of drama. I have the R community, the research community, and a few others for the productive conversing, and Wikipedia doesn't seem to have got much worse or better without me, so... ;p. Ironholds ( talk) 00:10, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Chief, you contributed a large volume of high-quality content to the encyclopedia, you were a good admin, but you got your butt caught in a crack. No doubt that hurt (a lot), and the fact that some folks can't let go and can't forgive is on them. I will always remember your kindness to me when I was a newbie, and try to pay it forward whenever I see a good-faith rookie caught in an ANI Kafkaesque nightmare that they don't quite understand. There's a lot of that. The longer I've been here what surprises me the most is the well-established factions that impact what we do here . . . whether it's ANI, RfA, etc. I try to avoid the drama boards and the politics as much as I can, and I think I'm saner for it, but every once in a while an obvious screw-job draws me in to defend the little guy. For what it's worth, there's at least one editor around here who misses your regular contributions. Focusing on writing is a lot more fun, too, and nothing stops you from doing that. Cheers, old man. Dirtlawyer1 ( talk) 01:27, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks; that paying it forward is..precisely what I'd like to see everyone do when it comes to kindness :). I won't lie, the inability to let stuff go gets me, but actually that getting-myself-caught-in-a-crack made me learn a hell of a lot about my behaviour and the wider world that was, in the grand scheme of things, very helpful - and it's that learning that has made me more observant of myself and others and less willing to deal with toxicity. Ironholds ( talk) 15:22, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

This place looks completely different.

I feel like Sookie walking into Bill's house at the start of True Blood (season 4). She spent a hot minute in faerie world and came home to find she'd actually been gone for more than a year. When she left, Bill's house was a dilapidated shithole. When she got back, pimped out mansion. I wouldn't say Wikipedia is so much pimped out, but the editor is so much sweeter. Almost makes me want to return to editing. Almost. Indubitably (Lara) 00:33, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Comment on your comment on Signpost

You said: Literally speaking, it can't possibly be counter-productive; we already lost. If we appeal, the worst we can get is the status quo. Just so you know, what can happen is that at the appellate level, Wikipedia can lose again, this time setting bad precedent for future cases. A dismissal at the US District Court level cannot be cited by other courts in other cases as establishing the reason for a dismissal in those cases; a dismissal in the US Court of Appeals (for any circuit) may set precedent that can then be cited by other courts to support a dismissal in other cases. That said, the foundation should appeal if legal counsel sees solid grounds for doing so. (Note: on semi-wikibreak, so ping if you reply here) Etamni |  ✉   04:32, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. But as you note, you're pretty new (to the order of a week, by your account contributions) and while your work has been great thus far, voters tend to want to see at least 6 months of experience editing in various areas. MfD busywork

Hello Ironholds.

Do you remember your early days, 2008, when you had a penchant for listing dubious userpsace pages at MfD? It was very frustrating to me, trying to review MfD nominations, to have MfD flooded with what seemed like endless worthless but not particularly problematic pages. Well, you've been away form there for a long time, but the place hasn't changed, just the people who engage in the practice of filling it with busywork. At least, that's how it feels to me. I recall getting the impression back then that my comments to your nominations irritated you.

Why did you you stop? Or if you prefer, do you still consider your old MfD nominations worthwhile?

Interestingly, the new editors who do this sort of stuff at MfD often go on to become very valuable Wikipedians Yourself, for example. I've wondered, it this behaviour, which I characterize as "feeding busywork into the MfD process", an attempt by new Wikipedians to gain experience in a variety of Wikipedia processes. Perhaps they linger at MfD because it is a particularly odd place?

I've spent a scary amount of time volunteering at MfD. I wonder if you could give me a few minutes of your time, on your thoughts of that place in hindsight.

Other venues for that kind of labour - patrolling the articlespace, for example - can be very tense because the costs of getting it wrong are much higher; a misplaced CSD can drive a user off, end up with someone shouting at you, and smudge your record. MfD work over pages by long-since-departed users, or clearly ad-based userpages, have lower costs associated. But I can only speak for me. Ironholds ( talk) 16:30, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi!

Would you please be so kind to ping me or something when you post the list of missing names from the book? Thanks in advance! The Quixotic Potato ( talk) 15:39, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Absolutely! Ironholds ( talk) 15:57, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I saw some interesting statistics. BTW, I made this edit. The sentence: "There, Burr had trouble in, becoming a rebellious and disruptive child; as well as brief attempts to leave he, aged ten, signed on as a cabin boy and was only tracked down and returned home with some difficulty." needs a little tweaking. Did he have trouble fitting in? The Quixotic Potato ( talk) 04:25, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

There is a mop reserved in your name

You are an exemplary editor—indeed remarkable.
You would be a good administrator in my opinion, and you are qualified!
You personify an Administrator without tools, and have gained my support; already!

-- John Cline ( talk) 04:10, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Hello Ironholds. I don't know how much thought you may have given to re-acquiring the admin bit, but I wanted you to know that I have given it thought, and I bet others have too. In my meditation, I have concluded that you'd be an asset to the corps, and several fold better than the admin editor we previously perceived you to be. Whether you ever regain sysop or not, I feel I've witnessed a remarkable transformation in your every manner and I'd be happy to support your candidacy if it were to transpire. What's more, I'd be happy to drink a beer with you; a thing I once thought never could be. Bravo sir, you done good!-- John Cline ( talk) 04:10, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks John. To be honest I haven't thought about it that much; my attention is fragmented enough right now between Wikipedia, code and science that I'm not sure I have the time and energy to re-engage with the project to the degree expected of RfA candidates. Plus, I'm still recovering from getting out of the Foundation! This may change in the future (I hope it will) but for the time being Wikipedia isn't my priority, and to at least some degree sysops should be able to make it theirs. I very much appreciate the thought, mind :). Ironholds ( talk) 13:09, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Ironholds. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Lucas Dillon, 6th Viscount Dillon

Dear Ironholds. The article Lucas Dillon, 6th Viscount Dillon, was created by User:Aatomic1 on 15 April 2007. In 2009 user User:Tryde (now retired) blanked it and changed it into a redirect page pointing to the article Viscount Dillon, which lists such viscounts. User:Rms125a@hotmail.com reversed this change and called it "vandalism". You intervened and upheld Tryde's blank-and-redirect. One of the results was a circular redirect on the article Viscount Dillon where the list entry for the 6th Viscount pointed to the mentioned redirect page. I tried to mend this vicious circle be recreating the article for Lucas Dillon, 6th Viscount Dillon, from the redirect page. Perhaps I should not have done so: it went against your administrative decision. I am a novice in Wikipedia and had not read WP:BLANKANDREDIRECT. I did not find a reason for the blank-and-redirect, nor did I see a discussion of it (I do not think there was one). Likely, the subject does not pass the test of notability. The article, as it is now, is still too short: only 314 words of readable prose, which is a size for a stub, not a start. Eventually you might consider my effort misdirected and propose the article for deletion or simply revert my edit. The circular redirect might indicate that a redirect is not the right solution for the problem. With many thanks for your time, respectfully yours Johannes Schade ( talk) 18:25, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Ha. Absolutely no urgency at all. Have a good holiday. ~Oshwah~ (talk) (contribs) 02:04, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ironholds, I just came across File:A 1677 map of Gray's Inn. which you originally uploaded. good article about Marie Poussepin even better

i hope you dont' mind me correcting terms in the article

You are being contacted because you contributed to a recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY that closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.

Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome.

-- SmokeyJoe ( talk) 11:12, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Hey SmokeyJoe. For me, I suspect I did it because it was relatively clean-cut work.

Plus, I'm still recovering from getting out of the Foundation! This may change in the future (I hope it will) but for the time being Wikipedia isn't my priority, and to at least some degree sysops should be able to make it theirs. Not sure if this is your deal, but...

One of our students created an article on The Oven of Akhnai. It's not great, but overhauling it so it will be is a bit beyond my capabilities right now. However, it appears to be up your alley. ( Protonk) Adam (Wiki Ed) ( talk) 20:13, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Question about message

You posted this to me a few years back. I never checked messages until now.  :)

"If you can add a reference for your claim about PRR's Live at NEARfest album i'll include the information; until then it stays out. Ironholds (talk) 07:55, 20 May 2008 (UTC)"

I'm not sure what you are referring to, but I am the one that released this album (I owned NEARfest Records), so I'm the source.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chutch15 ( talkcontribs) 19:09, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

question

How are you? Thank you for reviewing "Persecuta" I have a question. User:KGirlTrucker81 reviewd another of my contributions and IMHO quite arbitrarily marked for speedy deletetion. I conteted the thing and we'll see. BUT I think that this user is abusing power. Is there a way of controlling this kind of things (arbitrary deletation - sabotage)? Is there a users ranking or similar "medical history" of users? Eralos ( talk) 01:58, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Care to do any "mopping"?

Hi, Daniel. I saw that you were awarded (?) a "mop". And was wondering if you might be willing to apply it at Talk:Earthquake prediction, where we have a big sopping mess of an RfC that needs to be closed. I don't know that it warrants a close read, but I am concerned that a less experienced editor might step into it, and try to issue profound fiats without doing a careful read. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. ~ J. Johnson (JJ) ( talk) 23:32, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

To Ironholds:
Hello!
Congratulations!
You have been included in my first, and possibly only, Very Early Christmas List!
As an earnest fellow believer in Santa Claus, and possibly in Our Redeemer Liveth as well, you may wonder how you got on this list.
I have no idea!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Unless I tracked down the connection in our user talk archives, in which case you know who you are!
Or not.
All the best for you and yours this Christmas 2018 and New Year 2019!
