Request for Comments on Current events Hello Fsotrain09 –

I'm trying to get some discussion going on two proposals regarding the current events page, but so far have gotten little to no response. Since you have recently edited the current events page, I'm asking for your input on these two proposals:

One proposal (this is the big one) involves putting the daily events from the current events pages into article-templates, a lá the monthly pages from 2003 to 2005, as well and having a consistent number of recent days on the current events page instead of a monthly archive. This would allow for the current events page and the respective month pages to be updated simultaneously without the monthly archival. For more, see the current events talk page. Another proposal involves merging the content of the regional current events pages (such as British and Irish current events and Canadian current events) into fewer continental articles. I have been wondering how to organize the data.

The DoD, and the Washington Post lists tried to shoehorn the names into the English style first name and last name format. It didn't work very well, because names can have so many different transliterations. And some nations, like Yemen, have areas where people can have a tribal name, that looks like a surname to us. Maybe sorting them by first name, within nationalities, would be better.

You might want to consider tagging articles like Julie ju with a speedy deletion tag to save the trouble of taking them to AfD when they're quite obviously nonsense or non-notable. [edit] Bribe the Ghost Hey -- Just a friendly reminder to be sure to use an edit summary that says "prod" when you propose an article for deletion. It's always good to use edit summaries, of course, but it's especially helpful for proposed deletion, because prod tags are not supposed to be re-added once they are removed, and the easiest way to tell if a prod tag was previously placed on an article is to look at the edit history. Also, in this case, I marked the article for speedy deletion; when it applies, speedy deletion is better than prod, because it requires less attention. I left the prod tag there, though, just in case anyone denies the speedy deletion (which I doubt will happen). Anyway, thanks, just letting you know! Mangojuicetalk 16:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pije ocet Yes, you are correct. I googled for a bit after I saw your change and it looks like it is Polish. I found a free online Polish translator (kinda like Babelfish) http://www.poltran.com/ and put in the text just to see what it was about ... the translation wasn't very helpful ... something about vinegar ... I'm going out on a limb and assuming that it is about some kind of wine.

But even so, the fact that the "article" ends in "aahahahahahaha" makes me very skeptical that there is any meaningful content ... that's pretty universal. BigDT 22:28, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] informative graphics Hi thar,

New to the WIKIpeida.

You flagged a page I just created for deletion. It was as a link reference (Informative Graphics) from XPS as a reference. I was trying to give background to Informative Graphics since background was given to HP, Ricoh etc from this XPS page as well. I thought it would be ok since the other companies have info pages as well for the XPS. I think it is important to note that more than just "printing" companies are doing work with XPS. I didn't think I was spamming or "selling". Any rate - I don't want to offend anyone so I tried to delete the page. Guess I can't do that. But can you give me some insight as to why some companies (like HP, and even small electronics companies) can have info pages and it is considered acceptable? [edit] informative graphics Hi Again,

Ok - I read through the link you provided. It does look like "public" companies are considered in a different light. Just the same XPS is an interesting move by Microsoft to have a alternative to PDF. The XPS article on this wiki refers to only "hardware" companies supporting this format. I think it is important to note that it isn't just hardware companies. Since Informative Graphics is not a "known" company, I felt it was appropriate to at least give a background. Seems like content can be written to "sell" or to "inform". But the policy is any content written about a non-public company is to "sell" and is adspace. Not sure this is really right - especially considering that most of the public company listings are complete "sell" in nature (including product lines, links to product lines, etc). This is also a disadvantage being created for "small companies" that aren't public.

Any rate - no problem and I didn't take it personally. I believe the page has been deleted now and I am little WIKIPEDIA wiser (lol).

On HL Engineering, you restored the prod tag twice after the author removed it. A prod tag should not be re-added to an article once it has been removed and the author is allowed to remove a prod. Prod is for uncontroversial deletions only. Once the original prod was removed, it should have gone straight to AFD. An article with multiple prod nominations will not be deleted by the closing admin. Also, your edit summary of "rv; please do not remove speedy delete tags" is incorrect as prod is not a speedy delete tag. Please see WP:PROD if you have questions. You do not have to be an admin to place the template, but you do have to be an admin to do the actual blocking. The reason it took so long to block the last WoW vandal ( 63.191.271.47.) is that he had a "." at the end of what looked like an IP address, which led the admins to investigate the ip address, and not the user name. Hi! I just wanted to let you know, I have removed the FAOL tags from Lope de Barrientos and Cao Yu. The full text of the two articles was already translated by me from the Spanish language articles, so the tag, which identifies that the text may be improved by translation of the material in the foreign language article, is not relevant. I am also a member of wikiproject echo, and want to commend you on your efforts. In almost every case, those tags are relevant; very few articles have been fully translated as these two have, and there's no way you could have known without checking the text and comparing. Although I know Arabic and Hebrew well, my linguistic knowledge does not include Afro-Asiatic languages. But I should thank you for bringing the issue to my attention. I also do not have any information regarding the article al, I would actually like to learn more about the origin itself. You may try asking Angrynight and Mustafaa, both are Arabic speakers and linguists (I'm not quite sure about Angrynight though). -- Inahet 02:41, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

hi there, you may want to consider adding the following interesting detail. some semiticists have hypothesised that the arabic definite article 'al-' (-ال) and the hebrew definite article 'ha-' (-ה) have origins in a proto-semitic definite article 'hal-' (-הל-/ال) (no alif/alef because it's not a long vowel in either case). evidence for this can also be found in the origins of the arabic 'this': 'hadhā' (هذا), which, when combined with a definite phrase, often shortens from 'hadhā al-bayt' to 'hal-bayt' (هذا البيت becomes هلبيت). otherwise, the article looks nice! i'll add this and you can edit it to fit into your article. dgl 15:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Regarding the circumstances of the burial of Amos Yarkoni z"l, yes, I too believe they were "memorable". I am trying to get more information before adding anything, but the way I heard it, there was a problem burying him in the Military Cemetary, because according to Jewish burial law, Jews are supposed to be buried amongst Jews, and Amos was not Jewish. There was a short-term fracas whereby a military hero was unable to be buried in a military cemetary. In the end, his lifelong close friend Rehavam Zeevi* bought three plots: one for himself, one for his wife, and one for Amos, so that Amos could be on the end of a row and technically not in the Jewish cemetary, yet still buried in the Military Cemetary... It was all a little unseemly and created quite a storm that a hero like Amos (even though he was dead) had to go through it...

However, there are two problems with this narrative:

1. Rehavam Zeevi is not buried at Kiryat Shaul (he is buried on Mt Herzl); and
2. Amos Yarkoni's grave is not located on the end of the row.

Possible answers to the above are:

1. Zeevi bought the "Jewish" plots, but they ended up being used by others;
2. At Kiryat Shaul, there are two graves a slight distance from the other graves, one of them being Yarkoni's. The two graves may be Yarkoni and his wife, or Yarkoni and another non-Jewish soldier.

I want to try and get more information about this and try and confirm things before adding to the article.

*Reading stuff on the net about Rehavam Zeevi, one would get the impression that he was an anti-Arab racist. This was not the case, although he did take a hard line against Israelis -- Jews and non-Jews (he once challenged the US Ambassador to Israel, who was Jewish, to a fistfight!) -- who were not loyal to Israel. He was a fluent Arabic speaker and had many close Arab and Druze friends, including Yarkoni.

Hi Fsotrain09 :) I agree, the incident should go on the website. I have found another source of information (all in Hebrew!!), which I am reading through and hope to have some stuff on the article soon. I just don't want to put anything up until I have some definitive background. What I described was told to me by my father, so I want to source it properly first. It might take a day or two though... I managed to speak to my father about Amos, and he came up with some interesting stuff. I'd be interested to hear how an Irish-American came to know of Amos Yarkoni. Oh, it's very simple really, I was browsing on Israel-related articles and came across his redlink. The surrounding context, e.i., "one of only six Israeli-Arabs to receive this high military honor" made it seem that not only did Yarkoni merit an article, but the English Wikipedia needed to have an article on him. You've asked a question I never thought would arise, and it makes me worry for your sake a little -- Wikipedia might be getting to you! ;)

The name had no meaning or signification for me at all when I concocted it (whilst intoxicated no less!) Originally, I pronounced it "ZOH" (as in Zodiac) - loz (as in the Wizard of Oz.) A friend later suggested that another possibility. Take a music (or a Han) "Solo", pluralize it: Soloes, and change the intial sound to a Z. ZOH-lows, I guess I'd write that.

I am a rather odd fellow, as is well-known, so this is what I decided. The first use of Xoloz by me was NOT on Wikipedia, but elsewhere. To distinguish between this other use and my Wikipedian name, I use the "original" pronunciation (The Wizard of...) for non-Wikipedian purposes, and the more recent suggestion when referring to the Wikipedian.

Aren't you glad you asked? ;) My answer gives further insight into the depths of my insanity; I am proud of myself, though (and pleasantly surprised), that I managed to keep my explanation of the name this short. This userbox template currently redirects to your subpage "User:Fsotrain09/workspace". On this subpage is material included which doesn't belong to the template. On any page the template is transcluded (currently only your userpage) this additional material will also be shown.

• Therefore you should copy the template code to another subpage eg "User:Fsotrain09/userboxes/name of the userbox" (or "User:Fsotrain09/name of the userbox") which is exclusivly for the template code.
• After this, update your userpage with the new location of the template - replace {{User FSO}} with for instance {{User:Fsotrain09/userboxes/name of the userbox}}.
• If the original "Template:User FSO" then has no more transclusions (check What links here on the template page) you can tag it for speedy deletion. Place {{db-g6}} on top of the template.

Oh my, that is a necessary article. And a huge article in European Portuguese. I need to finish the really big one I'm working on, and hopefully add at least a few references, and then I will begin this one right afterwards. The Spanish version is a straight translation of the Portuguese version, so your start closely matches the beginning of the Portuguese article. I also found a large tree of Brazilian history articles that need writing/improvement. Lots I could do, and I hope I can find appropriate references in a library or online (anyone can help with that by giving me links to reliable sources on the topic.)

I bet you could understand most written Portuguese. Until recently my whole knowledge of the language came from here, after I realized I could read it okay based on my Spanish. The language in the censorship article is easier than the Brazilian I'm working with now (European Portuguese seems to use more of the grammar and vocabulary I'm used to seeing in Spanish or English.) Heh. By the way, d'ye know what I did? The problem was, as I discovered after a little research, that the superscript references were throwing the line-height calculations out. So I just added an invisible superscript to every element. If all of them have it, then they're all the same height, whether they have another superscript for the reference or not. It's good to hear that you won't refuse the mop forever. I don't think you should change the focus of your contributions to fulfil every possible RfA requirement that people have (to see what these are (and how they change over time) just read WP:RFA every once in a while). Just focus on what you're good at and what you feel like doing, boldly make improvements where you see things or processes that can be improved, and don't worry too much. If you do want a suggestion what to do to get some admin-related experience, I'd say you could try to check out Special:Newpages, where you can tag pages for all kinds of cleanup (or better: clean them yourself), welcome newbies and help them with their questions, tag inappropriate pages for deletion (using speedy deletion, WP:PROD or WP:AFD depending on what is best), fight against copyright violations, categorize uncategorized pages, etc. Happy editing, Kusma (討論) 15:46, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, when you post a welcome message to a newcomer, could you use {{subst:welcome}}, {{subst:welcome2}}, etc., instead of just {{welcome}}, {{welcome2}}, etc. It means that the text of that particular template will be added to the talk page of the user instead of the user just seeing a sort of mirror image of it. Two advantages are that if the actual template is vandalized, the message you have sent will not be altered in any way, and also less load is placed on the server. Replacing "western dialects of Arabic" with "Maghreb Arabic" may be more accurate from a linguistic POV, but it's less comprehensible to encyclopedia users who don't know where or what the Maghreb is. I hope something can be done about this harassment. This user has been harassing me for quite some time, as is evident on the Eva Peron talk page. This user has quarelled with me about the proper spelling of Argentina, whether I should use the term "Argentinian" or "Argentine," has lectured me on what "sounds like" a Latin American name, and has accused me of illegal activities, and, in his/her ignorant misunderstanding of what constitutes a " Catholic Icon", misperceived when I was referring to the object in the Pope's hand as an "icon"; instead, he/she claimed I was referring to the Pope in a derogatory manner as a "Catholic Icon" and thus commiting blasphemy. This recent accusation is just the latest in a bizarre sequence of accusations. I wouldn't be surprised but that Foolscape planted a fake message on his/her own Talk page then blamed it on me in an attempt to discredit me. I have no idea what this person has against me personally. I also have no interest in learning. But, as I mentioned on the Eva Peron Talk page, this user's harassment of me extends to two pages: Eva Peron and Bradley Nowell. I might add that these are two pages that I worked on extensively, by myself, and took from mere stubs to one "Good Article" and the other being medium sized and far more comprehensive (though it still needs work).

Unlike Foolscape, I do not hide behind an anonymous username. I use my real name, which makes me feel that much more vulnerable when people harass me. Foolscape's harassment, and my inability to do anything to stop it, and the unwillingness of anyone else to step in and help me cope with it, is the main reason I decided to leave the Eva Peron article. As I am the main person who helped bring that article from a stub up to the current Good Article status, and as I continued to be the main person to contribute to and attempt to improve and expand that article, I think it is a safe bet to make that now that I have left that article it will probably be delisted from being a Good Article. The latest example is the insertion of the allegations of a Swiss bank account. Did you see the website that person linked to? It is completely flimsy, untrustworthy, unverifiable, unscholarly, and just useless for the sake of an encyclopedia article. But I dare not remove it for fear of being attacked by people like Foolscape, who seem to be taking over and attempting to destroy the article I worked so hard to get to Good Article status. It's a pity because, dare I say it, I actually care about the article. I don't know if the same can be said for Foolscape and others who insist on inserting nonsense into it and who insist on attacking my personal character for merely attempting to illustrate the article with pictures that had already met with the approval of the Good Article standards review. I do not really understand your request (the one about moving it to your userpage: you could just create a page with the name of the article and a /temp afterwards), but you could just translate it off the page and move a little marker, e.g. translation in progress, down the page as you go forward with your translation; a little hint on the talk-page would be alright, too.
