Orphaned non-free media (Image:Homestar Runner logo.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Homestar Runner logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the " my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot ( talk) 07:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

In exceptional cases user talk pages may be deleted via Miscellany for Deletion (see right to vanish); they are not eligible for speedy deletion under this criterion." MSU Interview

Dear Cyrius,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar -- Jaobar ( talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck ( talkcontribs) 14:06, 14 February 2012 (UTC) reply

Articles deletion

Dear Cyrius,

I apologize for the inconvenience, but have no other way than appealing for administrators’ help recover a deleted article.

I published a film article entitled Drits (Derivas), a film by Portuguese director Ricardo Costa. It is the second film from an autobiographic trilogy, Faraways. The article was kept untouched by several months. To my surprise, it was recently eliminated and redirected to the director’s page with no discussion. I undid the redirection, but saw the article was proposed to deletion. Reason: independent, verifiable, secondary resources. I argued that the article couldn’t have but primary sources (the producer’s ones) as it is an upcoming film, like many others listed at upcoming films. A film that has not yet been premiered or distributed may not be commented. Besides, none of the films so listed has ever been deleted or even contested.

At last, in discussion, user User:reddogsix proposed that the article should be renamed to Drifts (film) or similar, and at the same time put at the disambiguation page of Dritf this reference «Drifs, unreleased film by Ricardo Costa (filmmaker). I created a new page for the same article entitled Drifts (Portuguese film). As the semantic root “drift” seemed to be the problem, I replaced the article name to Derivas (Drifts) and published it once more with some improvements. As a result, the article was fast deleted and I blocked for three days.

In the meantime, a new article about the trilogy was published: Faraways, which was proposed to fast deletion as well by the same user, User:reddogsix.

Although unreleased, although having no reliable secondary sources, Drifts is unquestionably an outstanding film for its uniqueness and characteristics: autobiography, comedy, docufiction, metafiction in one. I guess that “outstanding” may be a synonym for “notable” in such cases and that articles like this shouldn’t be deleted without previous cared analyses: important information may be lost.

This sequence of interventions is clearly a personal attack by User:reddogsix, supported by two or three user friend. It has no other explanation. It contributes in nothing to improve articles quality. Mists article, which I created on 10 September 2010, is the latest example. The article structure was unreasonably modified, loosing clarity and useful content.

NOTE: sent to 30 administrators.

Thanks for your attention, User:Tertulius 21:16, 28 July 2013 (UTC) reply

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Cyrius. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Cyrius.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins). MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC) reply

The file File:Nohat-logo-X-en-darkbg.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Old orphaned esoteric file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13 Talk 17:44, 14 April 2018 (UTC) reply

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. / Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Hi there. You deleted this page as a copyright violation just as I was about to decline the nomination. The draft was identified as being copied from https://legiscan.com/US/bill/SB4674/2021, but I suspect that the material on that LegiScan page originally came from https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/4674, which is in the public domain. CSD Deletions

Hello, Cyrius,

You have certainly returned to working as an admin with gusto, you are very busy deleting pages tagged for speedy deletion. I just encourage you to carefully review the tagged pages and make sure the taggings are appropriate. I probably untag at least 1 out of 10 CSD-tagged pages I come across because the criteria doesn't apply. There is an editor who is tagging pages over the past hour who is clearly mixed up on what qualifies as a speedy deletion criteria such as tagging drafts based on notability or tagging drafts as deletable because they are in a foreign language, neither of which is a valid reason for speedy deletion. Although you have clearly been an admin for a long time, I encourage you to slow down and evaluate all of the pages you anticipate deleting and make sure that the tagging editor has posted a notice on the talk page of the page creator letting them know that the page will likely be deleted. This is particularly important for speedy deletion because there is no review process other than the admin who is considering deleting the page. As long as it is not an attack page or BLP violation, there is no rush to delete a page that is tagged for speedy deletion, you can spend a minute or two considering them.

I hope you take this in the spirit intended which was to be helpful to an admin who is returning to active service. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:35, 7 December 2022 (UTC) reply

I'll explain the chain of events there. I happened to land at that page under the title "Kung fu kid". I saw that all the instances of the title were title-case, so my intent was to move the page to "Kung Fu Kid", without noticing that there was a video game with the same name as primary topic. Somehow I managed to move it to Kung Fu Did, which you deleted.

You moved it from Draft space to Article space when the original had been deleted for notability concerns. That made the page eligible for speedy deletion.
And even if you hadn't done that, you "moved" the article by copying and pasting the draft and blanking the original. For future page moves, please follow the instructions at Help:How to move a page. It's easier to use the actual move function and importantly, the move function preserves page history. Page history is required to fulfill the attribution requirements of Wikipedia's licensing.

تراجم شعراء السودان

Please undelete تراجم شعراء السودان. I can't figure out where it pointed, but as a general rule being in a foreign language is not a valid reason for speedy deletion. If the foreign language does not have an affinity to the subject, then sometimes it's a valid reason for deletion at RFD, but that sort of thing should be discussed first since RfD regulars' definitions of "affinity" vary widely.

109 and 110 countries

Hey, what's happening Cyrius. I noticed that you deleted my redirects for 109 countries and 110 countries under the guise of them being "Recently created, implausible redirect[s]." However, these are both terms that are commonly used as a dogwhistle by anti-semites when referring to how the Jews were expelled. This IMHO is not an implausible redirect, but one that will help confused readers when they encounter these dogwhistsles. Knightoftheswords281 ( talk) 19:59, 28 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Anyone who's confused by those terms and looking for an explanation will just be more confused by being pointed at an article about Jewish history. One that doesn't explain why they've been redirected there.
I know I was initially confused because I was not aware of those dogwhistles.
The best redirect target I can think of that would actually be informative is List of symbols designated by the Anti-Defamation League as hate symbols#Numerical, and even that's not great. @ Knightoftheswords281Cyrius| 22:39, 28 December 2022 (UTC) reply

MSU Interview

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Hi there. You deleted this page as a copyright violation just as I was about to decline the nomination.

The Kung Fu Kid page

I'll explain the chain of events there. I happened to land at that page under the title "Kung fu kid". I saw that all the instances of the title were title-case, so my intent was to move the page to "Kung Fu Kid", without noticing that there was a video game with the same name as primary topic. Somehow I managed to move it to Kung Fu Did, which you deleted.

Because of this I want to apologize and also trout Self-trout. Oh, well! Dsuke1998AEOS ( talk) 04:03, 8 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Deletion of Prakash Neupane

I saw that you speedy deleted the page which I've re-created using new reliable sources where it passes WP:MUSICBIO and was alrey reviewed. Do you've any comment to pass regarding the speedy deletion of an article which was previously deleted before more than a year. DIVINE ( talk) 15:41, 8 December 2022 (UTC) reply

General

Hi, I moved the page from Anjali Phougat to Anjali Phougat Dhingra because her name is Anjali Phougat Dhingra as mentioned in multiple secondary and independent reliable news source. Draft:Anjali Phougat Hukumat Namanzoor ( talk) 08:53, 9 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Draft:Mangrovia deletion

There has been a very big misunderstanding about my draft article. I can further explain anything about it if you want, it is completely valid in it's information. I also didn't mean to use it as a test page, I published the words (testing) to check if I could preview the page. Thanks, regards Theodore.

(I asked the first admin to delete the page the same request, and then they complied, followed by you deleting it seven minutes later) * Pppery * it has begun... 22:31, 12 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Hi there. This one stumped me for a bit. But then I realized that the article's subject is also the holder of the external website is also the person who wrote this article. The website has been altered since I ran the initial copyvios report. I've actually never run across this before. Onel5969 TT me 22:02, 13 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Shockingly, I ran into that situation on another page yesterday. That case was even more flagrant than the one paragraph here.
And of course as I was looking into this someone else nuked it for self-promotion. Which I was tempted to do the first time around but didn't. @ Onel5969Cyrius| 22:48, 13 December 2022 (UTC) reply

G7

I see that you have deleted Draft:Tayzee under speedy deletion criterion G7 (creator of the page has requested deletion or blanked the page). However, the account which blanked the page was not the one which created it. JBW ( talk) 23:24, 19 December 2022 (UTC) reply

I think I got hung up on the person adding the tag not being the blanker and didn't look that hard at the very first edits so the red text just blurred together. Just another thing to be careful about. @ JBWCyrius| 00:14, 20 December 2022 (UTC) reply

2022 post-Roe cause-célèbre

Why did you delete "2022 post-Roe cause-célèbre"? -- Jax 0677 ( talk) 15:40, 2 January 2023 (UTC) reply

I thought the deletion reason was clear enough. It was tagged as an implausible redirect. The reason seemed sound enough to me. Nobody looking for the article is going to be searching for a relatively uncommon French loan term.
And that's without wading into the drama of the now-blocked user who suggested that title to "put some panache on it" in the first place. @ Jax 0677Cyrius| 21:32, 2 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Why did you delete the Cabildo de Cartagena de Indias article if after I summarized it?, just leave the date of the article, I demand that you return the article, what you did was because you wanted it because it no longer had a copyright vio. This was very ugly and you only did it because you don't like my additions on wikipedia. I want to know how I could file a complaint so that the other administrators can see it.-- BrugesFR ( talk) 16:12, 21 February 2023 (UTC) reply
