Oppose, the two operating systems were very different, and
Category:Classic Mac OS software does not belong within the current
Category:macOS software. Note that there are various sub-categories called "Mac OS" which themselves contain "Classic Mac OS" and "macOS" sub-cats and should also have been included in the nomination. I agree that there is a problem with the category names being nearly identical, so I suggest renaming to
Category:Macintosh software, like the sub-cats
Category:Macintosh software stubs and
Category:Macintosh game covers. Other sub-cats with "Mac OS" in the name (but not "Classic Mac OS") should likewise be renamed from "Mac OS" to "Macintosh". "Mac" on its own should also be expanded to "Macintosh". However, the parent
Category:Mac OS should now be renamed to
Category:Macintosh operating systems, per its main article
Macintosh operating systems. The full list for renaming is therefore:
Oppose, per what
Fayenatic said. There have been two main lines of OS for Macintosh, the
classic Mac OS line and the
Mac OS X/OS X/macOS line, with the latter being a completely different OS that has, earlier in its history, offered various mechanisms for running software for the former (the
Classic Environment, which ran classic Mac OS binaries inside a simulated classic Mac OS, and
Carbon plus
Preferred Executable Format (PEF) support in Launch Services (if Boring Old exec() fails, Launch Services would run a "PEF runner" program and hand it the file), which allowed application developers to build binaries that would run natively on both the classic Mac OS and Mac OS X). If using "Mac OS" to refer collectively to both OSes is confusing people, then replacing it with "Macintosh" seems a reasonable fix.
And the only native macOS character encodings are UTF-8 (at the UN*X layer) and UTF-16 (on disk in HFS+ and in some layers running atop the UN*X layer), so, yes, there's no need to rename
Category:Mac OS character encodings.
