Surely this list List of largest United Kingdom settlements by population Is the corrsct list to use when stating population figures for UK Cities within Wikipedia, the list currently used List of English districts by population is ridiculous as it also includes counties and skews data for smaller cities such as Leeds and Sheffield as they include the metropolitan areas in their figures.

Clearly the wrong information, as Manchester and Liverpool are both approx twice as populous as Leeds or Sheffield.

You are listed in the discussion section of the Liverpool page as the editor responsible for changes. It is proper that Populations on UK City pages reflect the cities rather than the metropolitan areas or counties. If these pages were editable I would do it, they are not so I must request.

The next semester should be pretty exciting there are over 25 university classes signed up with the project. Currently, there is another round of assessments to look at the improvements students made to their articles. I and other eds. have between us declined your proposed deletions.The material is actually in general very well sourced; the actual sources are one link away, in the indiv. articles. There are two opinions about proper actions in cases like this: one is to leave them alone, the other is to copy over a key source demonstrating the group identification. What does not seem to make sense is deleting sourced material because the source is not expressed explicitly on the same page. As far as I know the requirement is only for sourcing, not sourcing in any particular location. But if you want it in the same location it would do no harm--just fix it , if concerns you. I personally don't think the fact that the material might be sourced elsewhere on Wikipedia is enough, not least because to check whether such references exist would mean clicking on every item in sometimes very long lists. Hi Larry, I modified the Stumpjumper page to clarify the "welded vs lugged" section. I see you changed it back, I should have told you why. Only the very earliest shipments of (Oct.81) Stumpjumpers had welded frames. The later (but still first year models) had lugged frames. This is discussed in the "25 years of Stumpjumper" book. I think some people are misunderstanding the rationale for the request, but perhaps the main problem is that we proposed a blanket ban. Hi Larry. Sorry, my point about the "ridiculous title" referred to that unwieldly and very American construction, "William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Sociology" at the University of Virginia. I should have been more clear. We surely don't need to say "University Professor" (should be lower-case, in any case), as that is implied by the Wazza R. Kenan stuff. As an aside, I remember Prophesy and Progress very well as an undergraduate in the early 1980s, and I still have two copies, one my own, the other the library's that I carelessly forgot to return. OK, I see. I thought you were saying that "University Professor" was ridiculous. I don't think it should be in lower-case, though. The point isn't that he's a (generic) university professor, but that he tolds the title "University Professor". A similar title exists at the University of California (see here) and isn't held by all professors at the university. Kumar uses the title University Professor on his publications, such as this. The confusion is not unique to Americans, but - in my experience - they do it more consistently and thoroughly than anyone else. I am British but have lived in the US for 25 years. Have also lived in several other countries. It is one of my pet peeves and I have a mission to go through Wikipedia and change all references to English actors, politicians, etc - to British. We can keep changing and unchanging this entry, but is it worth it? The problem is that personal experience is not sufficient to add something to Wikipedia. As WP:Verifiability states: "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth; that is, whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true". Describing people as English versus British would seem a different point to me, unless you're claiming that all of the articles on Wikipedia about English people were written by Americans with no understanding of the difference between Britain and England. And in any case, it's surely not incorrect to state that someone is English if they are from England and identify as such? It's not the same as confusing England with Britain. Sorry if I am not doing this message thing properly - I am relatively new to Wikipedia. I have no objection to using England and English when referring specifically to England and things English. My objection is with the way so many people - Americans in particular - misuse the term, as in "the English prime minister David Cameron" or a book with a chapter title "Politics in England" that actually deals with British politics. Problem is, it's impossible to verify. I am British, and was born in England, but have ancestors from Scotland. So what am I? I'm not Scottish, I could be called English, but I consider myself British. Right now I'm having a squabble with several people who keep describing the commentator Christopher Hitchens as English-American, when he was once a British citizen but is now an American citizen. I agree with you in the case of "English prime minister" - that's clearly incorrect. But it's not the same as "English actor" or "English politician". As for Hitchens, I think you might be confusing citizenship with national identity. Hitchens is a British citizen but if there are reliable sources describing him as English then so be it. I created the article a long time ago, but right now I agree this has very little useful info, so yeah it should probably be deleted (Which also goes for the embassy in Washington and Berlin), though the Moscow one should probably stay, as the building passes notability, I think. To be honest I'm actually not sure how these articles can even be expanded- there is only so much one can say about an embassy! I support the deletion of all these articles, but many will oppose because there is so many one-sentenced 'articles' on embassies e.g. Mexican Embassy, Berlin; French Embassy, Ottawa; Bulgarian Embassy, Chişinău; Embassy of the United Kingdom in Moscow... the list goes on and on. You may wish to consider using multiple colons to indent your comments at AfD discussions. Rather than asterisks. The latter break up the conversation unnaturally, which is I expect why the former is the choice by the vast majority of those commenting at AfDs. I removed the 250,000 figure from British somalis demographics because it looks like an inflated figure. Most sources tend to give figures between 90,000 and 125,000, so the 250,000 figure is unique and seems very implausible. The reason I deleted it was because it was clearly written in a promotional rather than an encyclopedic style (e.g. "What a great opportunity to be able to show the true Latin identity as a venturesome, brilliant people, loaded with magic, as well as rich our own culture in a television channel", and "The programming will grow day by day: it will be enriched with their own ideas"). I recommend that you take a look at WP:NPOV before adding such material. Your user name also suggests that you have some association with the TV channel that you're writing about. Hi Cordless Larry. An editor has added some undue and unrepresentative material to the Somalis in the United Kingdom article, which I've commented about here. He has also added some similar non-neutral soapboxing to the Black British page, some of which I've also removed. However, I still think you should give it a look when you have the chance (e.g. one section was re-titled Mass street conflicts with white racists and police forces). Thanks for you assistance Larry, it has been much appreciated. Given recent events, I think I will become a dedicated part time editor as general knowledge is my specialty. I think it makes sense to hold fire on the Education page for now as some of the resistance has nothing to do with the data and more to do with massaging the appearance of specific ethnic groups against others.

I will say I am a bit disappointed, as thought the editor management processes would stop this sort of thing from happening. Perhaps we should draw in others editors or try a new tack??

Thanks Nograviti. Editing Wikipedia, and particularly articles of this nature, where people have very personal feelings about the subject, can be frustrating at times. I've only recently come back after a long break, which was partly the result of getting tired of endless debates such as this. I find it helpful to remember Wikipedia:There is no deadline. Yes, it's important to get incorrect or misleading data removed or clarified as soon as possible, but apart from that, giving it some time pays off and things settle to a consensus as more editors get involved. See Talk:British Cypriots as an example of that (admittedly where the other main contributor was making some pretty crazy arguments, which weren't hard to rebutt). Unfortunately not many editors seem willing to contribute to these ethnic group articles. A few people have chipped in on the Somali and Nigerian ones, but please do contribute further to them if you have the time and interest. Cordless Larry ( talk) 09:46, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Hmm it is funny, but the issue is I don't see why users see such discussions in binary terms, that my group should be seen as the best or better than others. Often the facts on different ethnic groups have long historical reasons behind them. It doesn't mean one group is better than another. Look at Asia, if you had wikipedia in the 80s there would have been no comparison between China and Japan. But go forward 30 years and the picture changes entirely, everything is in flux and always changing. Today's leaders could become tomorrow's also rans.. I can understand why some people act defensively about characterisations of groups that they are members of, particularly when those groups are subject to negative media coverage and outright racism (which Somalis undoubtedly are). However, it shouldn't spill over into censorship of material from verifiable and reliable sources. It's far better in my mind to use the data and to provide well-sourced explanations of it, for example so that readers can understand that there are very good reasons why Somalis fare relatively poorly in terms of education, than to suppress it. Couldn't agree more, Boko Haram aside Nigeria isn't war torn and stands out as one of the few African countries where the colonial administration saw fit to create and use a small black middle class (Ditto Ghana). This wasn't the same in east Africa, where you often had divide and rule along with middle class imported from south Asia (Hence the Idi Amin expulsions). That probably explains the differences we are seeing and I agree one shouldn't be using WP to censor a particular group's shortcomings. I agree that Somalis are unfairly vilified, but the problem lays with the media not with Somalis in my opinion. In truth the UK is pretty good on such matters in Scandinavia outright racism towards Somalis is sadly commonplace Nograviti ( talk) 12:19, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

It's not as if they've threatened violence or anything like that, but that the more I try to contribute to the article, the more editors they will recruit to oppose any edits I make or suggest, and also that they will try to set me up to look like I've been breaking Wikipedia rules somehow and get me blocked.
