The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Thebiguglyalien, with 919 points from a featured article on Frances Cleveland as well as five good articles and many reviews,
• Unlimitedlead, with 862 points from a high-scoring featured articles on Henry II of England and numerous reviews,
• Iazyges, with 560 points from a high-scoring featured article on Tiberius III.

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. Fair enough. I haven't responded to these questions in my talk page quick enough. I'm currently contributing to OpenStreetMap and I don't really visit Wikipedia as frequently as I've used to. Being frustrated about a slow response is fine but coming to another editor's, whether they are your mentor or not, talk page to simply insult them is not okay. I do not believe slow responses from mentors is reason enough. Wikipedia isn't going anywhere. There is nothing urgent about this project except potential chronic and intractable behavior issues or in the case of trying to stop blatant vandalism. We are all volunteers, including yourself. You should not be shamed for having a life outside Wikipedia nor should you feel forced to devote every waking moment to the project just to be considered to be a good mentor. -- ARose Wolf 16:49, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

Thank you both! I couldn't see myself incorporating it into a resume both because anonymity helps Wikipedia to thrive and just because it isn't skill intensive work. In short, because that is their hobby. I think that most people would edit Wikipedia from time to time, but to have real dedication to edit everyday, that requires a lot of passion. Personally you should forget about putting Wikipedia editing to the resume and instead focus on editing articles that you truly care about. For me, I edited articles about spaceflight because I often reference facts from these articles a lot.

Don't force yourself to edit on Wikipedia too much though or else you will be burned out; pick up the pace that felt the most optimal for you. CactiStaccingCrane ( talk) 05:57, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

I am currently working on a tool to monitor the visual content of Wikiprojects, but it also accepts lists of articles. It is called Visual Content Assessment Tool and can detect low resolution images to improve, which seems exactly what you were looking for.

The tool is made of two parts: an extraction tool, and a dashboard to explore the data. I can extract the data for you if you provide me with the list, or you can follow the instructions here and do it yourself. I think that you should focus on getting the queries from Quarry, rather than asking users to install a script. At the very least, you should package the script in a way that is easy for non-IT savvy people to use and can be run on all platforms (Windows, MacOS, Linux). The content dispute on whether or not to classify the recent test flights as successes, partial failures or failures is continuing to persist despite the recent RfC which was closed by you. In this RfC, for the third time, consensus had emerged to classify the test flights as failures. Earlier today, a new discussion section was opened disputing the outcome of the recent RfC, which I responded to shortly before posting this message on your talk page. I'm still a rather unexperienced Wikipedia editor, so I wanted to ask you for your opinion on what to do next. Personally, I think that this should this be taken to a venue like the dispute resolution noticeboard as I think that this content dispute will continue to persist without comment from a third party. What do you think?

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Starvation (crime), without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Hey, hope you're doing well. January 2024 is looking really good compared to where other categories usually are by the middle of the month.

I appreciate the ping but there's so much that's been said about the proposed policy change (which I disagree with) and the backlog drive (which I've been advocating for 3000 years, or so it seems) that I'm not sure what more to add. I totally disagree with Levivich's comments that articles that are unsourced for years are because they're one of the least important articles on Wikipedia but that's not really the point. I see the points of both 'there is no deadline' and 'the deadline is now', but, not to be a broken record advocating the slow and steady, the best way to get through the backlog is to just, in the words of Fabolous, do the damn thang rather than reinventing/revising the deletion policy. I appreciate everyone's consideration on topic but with that many people spending however much time on that RfC/proposal, we could have referenced easily over 100 articles.

That being said!!! Backlog drive - when! How! I don't know how to do this but I am almost foaming at the mouth at the idea. It's a new year and it's time for it. Happy to help (co)lead and spread awareness about it but I don't know how to get it off the ground. Would you want to help organize this with me?

Hi there! I noticed the edits you've made to some mathematics articles, changing their short descriptions into examples:

I realise that there's already been some response to this in various places (in edit comments, on Talk:Nth root), but I thought it might be helpful to put discussion somewhere more central rather than on individual articles, and this seemed like a good place.

I agree with the idea of making short descriptions more specific than (for instance) "Mathematical operation", but I don't think a bare example is the right way to do this. The difficulty is in balancing the different aims, requirements, and purposes of a short description. "Mathematical operation" is fine for disambiguation, but isn't descriptive. An example is descriptive, but it may be too specific: it might only make sense to someone already familiar with the topic, and/or it might not suit the topic past a certain level (similar to the objection to describing trigonometric functions as relating to right triangles). A description plus an example may be too long. And so on.

I like the guidance at WP:SDEXAMPLES: start with a descriptive sentence like "<topic> is a…", and see what fits afterwards. I think this shows up the trouble with both the existing ones ("Exponentiation is a mathematical operation"—yeah, so are lots of things!) and the bare examples ("A logarithm is, for example, log₂(8) = 3"—no use if I don't already know what logarithms are). I wonder whether a combination would work, something like "Mathematical operation, e.g. 3 + 2 = 5"? Or would this be an instance of a compromise that makes everyone unhappy?

Ideally there would be some way to describe the operation or function that's both accurate and brief. But I'm not sure such a thing is achievable! If you describe subtraction as, say, "reducing the value", it's really only accurate at an elementary level. But how can we encapsulate all the nuance of subtraction in a short description? I suppose the answer is "we don't"; we should keep in mind that a short description isn't a summary of the article, it's a pointer to help people know whether the article is what they're after.

Actually, I didn't mind the previous short description for subtraction: "One of the four basic arithmetic operations". What is it that you think is lacking there?

Hey! Very excited about tomorrow's start, I'm really excited to see what 200+ participants can do with this drive. Something we might want to iron out, if last minute, is how to address articles that are tagged as unreferenced but do have general references or external links. The unreferenced tag can be swapped for an inline tag but I wouldn't award any points because it's not doing the work of adding an inline citation. Sad to see Special:Diff/1210640290. Trying to get VA to focus more on article improvement than, as you put it, useless article shuffling, is something I mentioned in Q15 at my recent RfA, so there is still a desire there. @ Sdkb The reason why I say so is that despite my multiple efforts to tell people to stop the useless shuffling and actually pay effort to improve these articles, nothing changes. The purpose of photo captions is not to "label" an image or even to describe an image. I've seen way too many awkward attempts at describing notable feature on astronomical objects and ended up with a very long and unwieldy caption. Instead, I attempt to standardize these captions and make them as short as possible, which also means I am omitting name of these bodies because that should be obvious. Danbloch, I've reverted some of these but there are a lot of truncated captions which need reverts and I don't have tools to do so. Cacti is a well-meaning drastic-change editor who gets things wrong on occasion and doubles down on continuing even though some of the earlier edits had been reverted (Sun, Moon). It seems all the captions may have been better before and I've reverted the huge changes to the feature page Earth (Cacti also may not always be aware that opening image captions and feature article texts which have stood the test of time are probably the better choice). This doesn't address Randy Kryn's concern that other information ("true color image", "such-and-such appears in the lower left") is no longer in the captions, but the value of this across all of these articles is by and large outside the scope of my knowledge. Hello, I've noticed that recently you've been embarking on an effort to standardize the captions of Solar System object infoboxes. While standardization of such a highly-visible part of an article is certainly beneficial, I must point out that you've been shortening them to the point where they are nearly obsolete. As someone else pointed out to me, one of the primary purposes of a caption in an infobox is to give a description of the image if the image fails to load; beyond this, it also intends to supplement the image itself, giving clarity as to what the lay reader is looking at. As such, I would say it's reductive to shorten captions to simply stating the object's name, the imaging spacecraft, and the date of the image. ArkHyena ( talk) 03:34, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Seems Musk and SpaceX have done more to push humanity towards exploring Mars (both in tech and human missions) than any other entities or societal forms such as science fiction (god bless Burroughs, Heinlein, Bradbury, Bova, and the rest). The achievement of landing an Earthling on Mars (making them temporary Martians) is both a noble and achievable cause which Musk has dreamed of as he gained his billions. Since this is on a talk page I can mention I was the first to show Bova a photograph of the planet Mars after the 1976 landing (and knew Bradbury, Heinlein, and did historical work on Burroughs, to namedrop a few). I think that SpaceX Mars effort is more notable than Mars One and such because it is actually a realistic plan with strong financial backing. In response, Rocket Lab has announced they want to do some stuff on Venus and Relativity Space has announced they want to do some stuff on Mars. I think this article do need to trim down a lot and personally I'm still somewhat skeptical that SpaceX will land stuff on Mars, but even if the plan fails, this is still a notable topic, and it looks like this is another case where Wikipedia is documenting history. Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

If you disagree with the result of the AFD, then it seems like writing a short essay in user space on why the article is SYNTH or inaccurate would be more useful. Even if you think it is a hoax (I can see calling it SYNTH, but not really a hoax?), the hoax museum is for hoaxes the community actually deleted, which clearly didn't happen here. The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.
