Hi Maedin, starting yesterday, if you already have 5 DYK credits then you need to review a hook in the T:TDYK queue before your's can be promoted to the main page. I've reviewed yours but can you review one when you have the time and not this underneath you nomination once it is confirmed? By the way, if you get details from google books (as I assume the tyrian purple fact was) then this tool is very useful at making references and saving you time. Hi Maedin.
Thanks for the review - it was starting to get a bit old there. :) Yeah, am fine with the new hook. I think DYK is really just a way to get some increased early traffic to an article and maybe a few more links in, so whatever reads most easily is good (it possibly should have an 'in' or 'of' in the "to the penal colony Van Diemen's Land" as it wasn't just one big prison colony and there were many free-settlers by then, but I think it gets the message across; it's already in the queue now, so probably too late to change it). It was my first nom there BTW.
I was going to add the picture of Gould as you suggested (had it all written out in the nom) but ended up pulling back based on the licensing. I think it's the self-portrait, but unfortunately couldn't find an actual site that listed both the pic and its name/date so thought just to be safe we better not put it on the mainpage. I have seen the self-portrait in person, but it was many years ago now and I can't remember.
BTW have just received permission from the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office to publish some of his work on Wikipedia (I was actually hoping to get it before it went to DYK, but they've been on holidays). They're pretty high res unlike the version of the portrait I've got. Technically I think they'd be out of copyright, but it's good to have the official permission. Do you know whether that should go through an OTRS?

Hi Maedin! I received the notification in my email that my ACC access had been suspended from lack of use.
I had intended to be an active participant on the ACC team. However, I noticed that every time that I went on IRC using the link provided by
User:Stwalkerster —
webchat — it publicized my IP address, mainly because one cannot use an
IRC cloak connecting via that route. I understood that the solution to this was to acquire an
IRC client, and an IRC cloak, and connect to the IRC using the other link provided by Stwalkerster —
irc://chat.freenode.net/#wikipedia-en-accounts.
Unfortunately, that was where my difficulty began: I could not figure out which freeware/ shareware client to use with Microsoft Internet Explorer (MS IE). I thought I could use ChatZilla, but the more I read about it, the less I understood it to be usable in MS IE. You can see elsewhere that I’ve explored this dilemma before.
If you have any suggestion as to the right/best client for me to use with MS IE, I’d like to return to doing ACC work.
Thanks! —

Your main issue here is not whether you are using a webchat service or an IRC client. You'll notice on the login page of the webclient that Stwalkerster linked you to that there's an option called "Auth to services". Clicking this allows you to enter your cloaked username and password (once you have one), and you then join the channel cloaked, and no one can see your IP address. (I think this simplicity actually makes it easier to use than ChatZilla, which I've always found a little over-complicated, not being much of an IRC user myself, :P)
Do you already have a nick registered with the freenode network? If not, that's where you need to begin, I think, see here: [1]. It's painless.
Then you definitely need a cloak; I take it from the conversation you linked that you've already read the guidance on cloaks at Meta. Make your request here: [2]. I remember it used to take a long time for cloaks to come through, I'm not sure if this is still the case or not. The interface looks different from what I recall and it may be that it's more reliably maintained now? I guess you'll find out!
Once you have been informed that your cloak is in place, I think you should be able to "Auth to services" and enter the channel cloaked. If it doesn't work for your "first time" though (it should, but just in case), you'll have to enter the channel, IP revealed, and then type /msg nickserv identify <your password>
. That will "identify" you and enact your cloak for as long as you remain in that session. Next time you log in you'll have to identify in the same way again (unless you use "Auth to services", which is obviously better).
As for IRC clients, please do not pay! I understand that mIRC was recommended to you, but there's really no need to pay for a client, there are many good free ones. I've used ChatZilla most often because I use Firefox, but I recommend Pidgin. It's open source, free, browser-independent, easy to use, and integrates with loads of different networks: Pidgin. It's simple to enter channels wearing your cloak, but then it is in the webclient, too. You can try both once you have your cloak and see which you prefer.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions if you need to. No guarantee that I'll be of use, but I try! :) Maedin\ talk 22:24, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
/msg MemoServ send wmfgc IRC cloak request
, I get the following message: MemoServ- You are not logged in.
.I tried it on the following channels: wikipedia-en-accounts, wikipedia, and MemoServ. Same response each time. Any advice? Thanks! — Spike Toronto 06:51, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
/msg nickserv identify <your password>
. You should then see a response: You are now identified for SpikeToronto
. It has to know that you're the owner of the registered nick. Once you've done that, try sending the msg to MemoServ again, and you'll probably get The memo has been successfully sent to wmfgc.
Let me know if identifying first does the trick or not, :) If not, we'll have to think of something else!
Maedin\
talk 09:11, 9 January 2011 (UTC) PS I wasn't very clear when I made my first response last night. I made it sound like you would be identifying for the cloak, and logging in with "cloak details". That's not really the case, it's all based on the nick information. You're identifying for the nick only, but the cloak is (will be) associated with your registered nick, which is why logging in ("identifying") enables it. (I think,
MemoServ- The memo has been successfully sent to wmfgc
. As for your postscript, I understood what you were telling me! I knew it wasn’t about the cloak yet. You were quite clear. I’ll let you know how things progress. Thanks again! —

[15:35] NickServ- You are now identified for SpikeToronto.
[15:35] == wikipedia/SpikeToronto is now your hidden host (set by services.)
[15:35] -MemoServ- You have 1 new memo.
[15:35] -MemoServ- To read them, type /msg MemoServ READ NEW
[15:35] == gateway/web/freenode/ip.xx.xxx.xx.xxx is now your hidden host (set by syn.) [Actual IP address removed]
[15:35] == wikipedia/SpikeToronto is now your hidden host (set by syn.)
The way I interpret that, I am now cloaked. Would you agree? Thanks! — Spike Toronto 20:50, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
P.S. By the way, the memo referred to by MemoServ was: wmfgc has read a memo from you sent at Jan 09 18:59:56 2011, which most likely was the memo one has to send as part of the acquiring-a-cloak process. — Spike Toronto

Hi Maedin,
I have a question that I don't even know the right words to use to ask of Wiki or even Google? So I wonder if you or any of your myriad followers know the best way to appreciate/convert old monetary values. Is there a template(s), a table(s), a page(s) that I have never found?
As you doubtless know I recently wrote that Leon Lemartin was paid '30 francs per flight' but I have no real grasp on whether this was a pittance or a gold mine.
Many thanks if you can help? Chienlit ( talk) 13:49, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

You're too modest. I noticed these fixes too. I started doing that almost exactly a year ago. I planned to check every single page, but I got frustrated pretty quickly. I've been trying to check through a page every once in a while. I did this a few weeks ago, and I meant to bring it up on FPC talk. About 2/3 of the way down, you'll see that I removed one completely. That image had apparently been deleted, although I couldn't quite figure out the whole story. I wasn't sure if we needed to change the FP count or if that had already been taken care of when we did our FP count check as we approached 2500. Probably need to ask at FPC talk, but I figured I'd get your opinion first. Best, Makeemlighter ( talk) 23:33, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Anyway. Is the edit-warring disruptive? If it is, you can take it to WP:RFPP and request the page be fully protected for a few days while they work it out on the talk page, or you can take it to WP:ANEW, which is basically a request to have one or both of them blocked to forcibly put an end to the edit-warring. Obviously whichever admin reviews it will make the final decision on what's the best way to put an end to the edit war. Sometimes they fizzle out of their own volition...

Can I beg a favour from you, please. The title of the article
Theodore Le Martin is a mangled FrAnglicisation of a person who is universally/correctly known in France as

Hi Maedin,
I have a question that I don't even know the right words to use to ask of Wiki or even Google?

You and the other editor have been edit-warring at Alexz Johnson and Jude Harrison over the white balance (!) of the lead image. To get you to stop, I am blocking both of you for 24 hours. After the block expires, you should resolve your disagreement per WP:DR without resorting to further reverts. Some advice: (a) consensus about which version of a picture should be marked as featured is not the same thing as consensus about which version to use in an article; and (b) any consensus or lack thereof is not a justification for edit-warring. I've come across Bill Gaede though STiki. The weird thing is... they ARE talking about it on the talk page... but in the least communicative way possible. They are obviously both newbies because they haven't worked out how everyone else uses talk pages.
