Nominator's rationale: Merge and redirect, deleting parents that will become empty. This hierarchy is WP:SHAREDNAME, a subset of Sri Lanka's history covering British Ceylon 1815–1948 and the independent Dominion of Ceylon 1948–1972.     Semi-oppose and propose a different fix. This category tree is a complete mess. I'm semi-opposing this proposal because it isn't completely fixing the issue. There are a few distinct entities here. Instead of placing stuff in a "x in Ceylon" and "x in Sri Lanka" categories, they should be in more precise and correct categories. So anything that belongs to British Ceylon or Dominion of Ceylon should be in those categories. Notice that in Category:British Ceylon, there is not even one correct "yyyy in British Ceylon" category. (feel free to fix my indent level). Gonnym ( talk) 08:56, 3 January 2024 (UTC) reply
    @ Gonnym: please explain why you think it would be better to use longer category names. IMHO it would be unnecessarily specific to use "YYYY in British Ceylon" or "YYYY in the Dominion of Ceylon" – those terms are needed on the articles British Ceylon and Dominion of Ceylon to disambiguate those two periods, but I do not see a need for the chronology categories to match the full regime name. The chronology categories capture stuff that happened in one entity, namely the island – in this case matching the territory of a current country – with continuity irrespective of historical regime changes. The only border change was the British subjugation of Kandy, and it would be unnecessarily detailed to reflect that in category names (unlike e.g. Category:Years in British Malaya which had a more complex history). – Fayenatic London 11:26, 6 January 2024 (UTC) reply
    Well it depends on how you view things. I think the category should be YYYY in country and not YYYY in island, as that is basically how we do it for most categories. The only times I've seen where we do it like you proposed is when the places have a similar names and then we oddly think it's ok to do that. I don't. Nominator's rationale: Possibly move to Category:Persecution of Christian converts in Iran. As far as I'm aware, all those who have been persecuted and included in this category are Christian converts from Muslim families.   • Oppose, first of all there is no rationale for deletion, only for renaming. But nowhere else a distinction is being made for converts, there is no Category:Persecution of Christian converts, so I am not convinced we should make that distinction in Iran. But I take on board what you say about the Assyrian Church in Iran, although as far as I can tell there is nobody in the category from that denomination (unless I have missed something). Nominator's rationale: Conversion from X in fiction to Fiction about X, as this must be a defining trait. The Indian diaspora one is a category that needs to be checked that all of the works directly included are actually about Indian diaspora; I recently purged many subcategories that were about works by Indian or Indian-diaspora authors. Nominator's rationale: I'm not really sure what to do with this category. The category is described as "These princes started a rebellion during the reign of a relative in order to seize the throne for themselves. They should be distinguished from rival princes who waged a war of succession when the ruler had recently died (or was otherwise incapacitated such as being deposed, imprisoned, expelled, fallen seriously ill etc.) and no other ruler had consolidated their reign yet. See also Category:Heirs apparent who never acceded and Category:Usurpers." However this seems hard to define. If it is keep, it should be renamed to "Rebel princes" as otherwise it sounds like a personality trait rather than someone who was a rebel (modeled off of Category:Rebel slaves Mason ( talk) 17:10, 7 January 2024 (UTC) reply

    Semi-oppose and propose a different fix. This category tree is a complete mess. I'm semi-opposing this proposal because it isn't completely fixing the issue. There are a few distinct entities here. Instead of placing stuff in a "x in Ceylon" and "x in Sri Lanka" categories, they should be in more precise and correct categories. So anything that belongs to British Ceylon or Dominion of Ceylon should be in those categories.     @ Gonnym: please explain why you think it would be better to use longer category names. IMHO it would be unnecessarily specific to use "YYYY in British Ceylon" or "YYYY in the Dominion of Ceylon" – those terms are needed on the articles British Ceylon and Dominion of Ceylon to disambiguate those two periods, but I do not see a need for the chronology categories to match the full regime name. The chronology categories capture stuff that happened in one entity, namely the island – in this case matching the territory of a current country – with continuity irrespective of historical regime changes. The only border change was the British subjugation of Kandy, and it would be unnecessarily detailed to reflect that in category names (unlike e.g. Category:Years in British Malaya which had a more complex history). – Fayenatic London 11:26, 6 January 2024 (UTC) reply
    Well it depends on how you view things. I think the category should be YYYY in country and not YYYY in island, as that is basically how we do it for most categories. The only times I've seen where we do it like you proposed is when the places have a similar names and then we oddly think it's ok to do that. I don't. They should be distinguished from rival princes who waged a war of succession when the ruler had recently died (or was otherwise incapacitated such as being deposed, imprisoned, expelled, fallen seriously ill etc.) and no other ruler had consolidated their reign yet. The people in this category area either in the subcategories (which are in Category:People from Los Angeles by district or neighborhood or are in Category:People from Los Angeles by occupation.
