Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which may be unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or the nominator specifically requests deletion or removal and no objections are raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

What not to list here

  1. For concerns not listed below, if a deletion is uncontroversial, do not use this process. Instead tag a file with {{ subst:prod}}. However, if the template is removed, please do not reinsert it; list the file for deletion then.
  2. For speedy deletion candidates as well, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
  3. Files that have no source, have an unknown copyright, are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
    1. {{ subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated.
    2. {{ subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information.
    3. {{ subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but isn't used in any articles.
    4. {{ subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but could be replaced by a free file.
    5. {{ subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright template but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed.
    6. {{ subst:nrd}} if a file has no non-free use rationale.
  4. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
    1. {{ db-f1|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
    2. {{ now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{ now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
  5. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{ db-f9}}.
  6. If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license but lacks verification of this (either by a VRT ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{ subst:npd}}.
  7. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
  8. Description pages with no local file, even though they are in the file namespace, should not be listed here.
    1. Redirects should be treated as in any other namespace: if no speedy deletion criteria apply, they should be listed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
    2. Local description pages with no associated file are speedy-deletable under criterion G8; use {{ db-imagepage}}.
    3. Local description pages for files hosted on Commons are usually speedy-deletable under criterion F2 if there is no content relevant to Wikipedia; use {{ db-fpcfail}}.
    4. Any other local description pages for files hosted on Commons should be listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion.
  9. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.
  10. If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{ db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for discussion

Use Twinkle. If you can't, follow these steps to do manually:

1
Edit the file page.

Add {{ Ffd|log=2024 July 31}} to the file page.

2
Create its FfD subsection.

Follow this edit link and list the file using {{ subst:Ffd2|File_name.ext|uploader=|reason=}} ~~~~

Leave the subject heading blank.

If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons.

For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use {{ subst:Ffd2a|File_name.ext|Uploader=}} for each additional file. You may use this tool to quickly generate Ffd2a listings. Also, add {{ Ffd|log=2024 July 31}} to the top of the file page of each file other than the first one nominated.

3
Give due notice.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{ subst:Ffd notice|File_name.ext}}

  • Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media
  • For multiple images by the same user, use {{ subst:Ffd notice multi|First_file.ext|Second_file.ext|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~ (can handle up to 26)

If the image is in use, also consider adding {{ FFDC|File_name.ext|log=2024 July 31}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:

  • Delete. Orphaned with no foreseeable encyclopedic usage.
  • Delete. Replaced by File:FILE2.
  • Free (public domain) file may actually be eligible for copyright in the United States. This photograph was actually first published in 1931, not 1925.
  • Remove from ARTICLE1 and ARTICLE2. The file only meets WP:NFCC#8 with its use in ARTICLE3.
  • Non-free file may actually be free. This logo does not seem to meet the threshold of originality to be eligible for copyright in the United States and should actually be tagged free using {{ PD-logo}}.

Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:

  • Obsolete – The file has been replaced by a better version.
  • Orphan – The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • Unencyclopedic – The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
  • Low quality – The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
  • Copyright violation – The file might be used in violation of copyright.
  • Possibly unfree – The file is claimed as a freely licensed content, but may actually be protected by copyright in either the United States or its country of origin.
  • NFCC violation – The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.
  • Disputed copyright status – There is a disagreement between editors over the copyright status of a file. This includes, but is not limited to disputes about whether a file is: too simple for fair use, using the correct license tags, or accurately described by its description page.
  • Wrongly claimed as own – The file is under a self license, but the information on the file description pages suggests otherwise.

These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

If you have general questions about a file and/or its copyright status, then please start a new thread at Media Copyright Questions.

Instructions for discussion participation

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons''', you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Instructions for closing discussions

Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps here.

File:HelloGoodbyeUS.jpg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Addit ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Both files are replaceable with the {{ PD-US-no notice ad}} file c:File:The Beatles - I Am The Walrus & Hello Goodbye ad.jpg per WP:NFCC#1. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnCWiesenthal ( talkcontribs) 02:08, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply

I feel like it should stay on, as it was the photo sleeve for the single in the United States. It just makes sense, but it's all personal opinion, but in mine, it makes the most sense to keep it. 2603:8090:1504:278A:C552:21C5:700B:9430 ( talk) 20:34, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply

File:Rules for Radicals.png ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Gobonobo ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This image only contains simple text/shapes and is thus ineligible for copyright due to being below the required threshold of originality. License should thus be changed to {{ PD-textlogo}}. If it is complex enough to qualify for copyright protection, a simple alternative cover (shown on websites such as Amazon) should be used instead per WP:NFCC#1. JohnCWiesenthal ( talk) 17:41, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply

First edition covers are preferred per Template:Infobox book. Not sure if the shapes are simple enough to qualify as a {{ PD-textlogo}}, but replacing it with an image from a modern publisher is suboptimal. gobonobo + c 20:16, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Flor Contemplacion photos

[

File:Flor Contemplacion.jpg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Toadboy123 ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
File:Flor Contemplacion after arrest.jpg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

"File:Flor Contemlacion" is essentially a cropped and enlarged version of "File:Flor Contemplacion after arrest.jpg" and two non-free files providing essentially the same encylopedic information to readers aren't need per WP:NFCC#3a. The cropped version is currently being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox of Flor Contemplacion while the uncropped "after arrest" version is being used in Flor Contemplacion#Background to arrest. The cropped file does appears to have been upload prior to the uncropped version, but the uncropped version does perhaps provide more context and is a true representation of the photo that was taken. For that reason, I think that the uncropped versoin is probably the one that should be kept except it source url doesn't appear to be working to allow for verification of WP:NFCC#4. Regardless of which of the two is kept, both aren't needed per WP:NFCCP. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 05:14, 5 July 2024 (UTC) reply

i uploaded the cropped version as a better quality version of the image that was on site for years, i guess you can remove the "after arrest" pic ? WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker ( talk) 19:01, 6 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Keep cropped version, discard other. The uncropped one is poor as an identification image which it is currently being used for. PARAKANYAA ( talk) 04:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Fastily 05:11, 21 July 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Keep the cropped version and delete the full version. The stated purpose is for use as visual identification in both images. Based on that usage, we need to consider WP:NFCC#3b. We do not need to use the entire image in order to provide visual identification so the cropped image meets the 3b requirement of minimal extent of use whereas the full image does not. The only justification for the uncropped image would be if it were to meet WP:NFCC#8 in the section it is used, and I do not see that it does. -- Whpq ( talk) 20:03, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply

File:Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard at Queen City Motors, April 9, 2015.jpeg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by JimmySevile2006 ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Had to list it here rather than speedily delete it because the uploader did claim it was public domain, but took the unusual step of modifying the text of the notice to claim two things make it PD (neither of which, of course, as we all know, come anywhere close to doing so): 1) it went viral on "The Facebook" when The Act was released in 2019, and 2) the guy in the photo was later arrested for fraud (Huh?). What we actually have is a fair-use image with no indication of who took it much less whether they have released it under a free license, no reliably sourced third-party commentary in the article text about it, and too big—all violations of the fair-use criteria (really, I don't think you could violate the FUC more spectacularly if you were actually trying to). Of course it's always possible that some heroic effort can be made over the next week, but I really don't see that happening. Daniel Case ( talk) 05:10, 24 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Source code for Doom was released under GNU GPL. Screenshots that haven't been freely licensed by their creators should be replaced with images from c:Category:Screenshots of Freedoom, or new alternatives should be created. hinnk ( talk) 18:56, 26 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Oppose: The purpose of the images in an article are to show what the subject of the article looks like. Images of a similar-but-different version of the game do not do this. It is not possible for free images of Doom itself to be created, as while the source code is now open source, the art is not. -- Pres N 19:25, 26 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Is it only the underlying engine that was GPL and not the original assets? I was trying to figure that out from the image pages but all it says is "Replaceable? No." hinnk ( talk) 21:14, 26 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Yeah- the release isn't obvious, but it's the code but not the "assets", which is the levels and art files. That's why Freedoom looks different. -- Pres N 01:52, 27 July 2024 (UTC) reply

File:Richard C. West.jpg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Chiswick Chap ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Non-free photo being used in Richard C. West and Constructing The Lord of the Rings#A "long and difficult process". Although a non-free use rationale is provided for each use, I only think the use in the "Richard C. West" is Wikipedia's non-free content use policy compliant.

According to the non-free use rationale provided for the article about West, the image shows "West working on the Marquette University Tolkien Archive". Given that West died in November 2020 and assuming the uploader did a reasonable such for a free equivalent image of him that could serve the same encyclopedic purpose as this or any other non-free one, this use seems fine because relevant policy has long allowed non-free images of a deceased individuals to be used for primary identification purposes at the tops of or in the main infoboxes of stand-alone articles about said individuals as long as no free equivalents can be either found or created to serve essentially the same encyclopedic purpose as athe non-free one; non-free uses of the same image in other articles or in other ways, however, tends to be much harder to justify. So, I suggest Keep for this particular non-free use in "Richard C. West". FWIW, there do appear to be some other images of him available online but none appear to be released under an acceptable free license.

The non-free use in "Constructing The Lord of the Rings" is not as clear and needs to be assessed. This use seems quite WP:DECORATIVE to me and doesn't meet WP:NFCC#1 ( WP:FREER) and WP:NFCC#8 ( WP:NFC#CS). According to the non-free use rationale provided for this particular use, the primary justifications for its seem to be as follows: (1) "Illustrate the drafts of The Lord of the Rings in the Tolkien Archive at Marquette University in use."; and (2) "There is no other image available that shows a Tolkien scholar working on the Marquette University Tolkien Archive, directly relevant to the article. It is not easy to gain access to the archive (only bona fide scholars are admitted), let alone to find a Tolkien scholar at work and get permission to photograph them actually using Tolkien's drafts, so while in theory another image might be made, in practice this is the only such image known from the many years the archive has been in existence." These to me seem more WP:THOUSANDWORDS and WP:IRREPLACEABLE justifications than anything else. I don't think the additional of this image to that particular section significantly improves the reader's understanding to such a degree that not seeing the image is detrimental to that understanding. Removing the image causes doesn't significantly effect the readers encyclopedic of the subject matter. In addition, the photo itself is not the subject of any sourced critical commentary; it's sourced to Marquette University's J.R.R. Tolkien Collection, but it isn't itself the subject of any sourced critical commentary in the article. If this is an iconic or otherwise historic photo that is regularly used and discussed whenever reliable sources cover the archives, then more sourced content about the photo itself should be added; otherwise, the reader doesn't need to see a non-free image of a Tolkien scholar doing research at their desk at the archive to understand that Tolkien scholars work at desks while researching the archives. The caption identifies the scholar as West, but that's the only time he's mentioned by name in the entire article; moreover, even if he was mentioned more, the non-free use in the stand-alone article about him and item 6 of WP:NFC#UUI means there's really no need to use the photo just to identify him: he can be mentioned in the "Constructing" article and a Wikilink to the stand-alone article about him can be added. The non-free use rationale for this use also states the file is needed to Again, I don't think the reader needs to see this non-free image to understand that the archives contain drafts (even thousands of pages of drafts) of Tolkiens work, and these are use by scholars researching Tolkien. So, I suggest Remove for the non-free use in "Constructing The Lord of the Ring" because it doesn't satisfy (in my opinion) NFCC#1 and NFCC#8, and a non-free use is required by policy to satisfy all ten non-free content use criteria to be valid. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 21:32, 26 July 2024 (UTC); edited to make some minor copyedits. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 06:53, 27 July 2024 (UTC) reply

This image uses several non-free use images in one to depict the Ninth Doctor's companions in the Ninth Doctor article, but due to the fact only headshots are used, this image can be replicated substantially easily using the free to use images we have of the companions' actors (Billie Piper, Bruno Langley, and John Barrowman). Low-res PNG scan of wrapped poster (HQ scan exists on IMDb); the quotes in the poster from which the article describes are barely readable, and besides, there's already a free alternative in use: File:"The Horror Chamber Of Dr. Faustus" - "The Manster" (U.S. Double Bill Trailer).webm. -- Mayimbú ( talk) 19:25, 28 July 2024 (UTC) reply

This file was discussed at Wikipedia:Non-free content review/Archive 68#File:SomeoneLikeYouVinyl2.jpg back in July–October 2015, and I closed the discussion as "no-consensus". I think though this probably should be discussed some more because it seems like this cover art would be at least {{ PD-ineligible-USonly}} for local use here on English Wikipedia given c:COM:TOO United States even if it's considered protected in the UK and can't be moved to Commons per c:COM:TOO United Kingdom. Today is July 31 2024. Put new nominations in Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 July 31 – ( new nomination)

If the current date's page has been started without the header, apply {{ subst:Ffd log}} to the top of the day's page.

Please ensure "===July 31===" is at the very top of the new page so that internal page links from the main Files for discussion page (the one you're on now) work.

The page Wikipedia:Files for discussion/Today will always show today's log.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{ subst:Ffd notice|File_name.ext}}

* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View".

Withdrawn I've updated the fair use rationales based on PresN's comments. The ones for Texture mapping and Gibs wouldn't be valid, but the images had already been replaced in those articles. hinnk ( talk) 02:39, 27 July 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Keep for the biography as you rightly recommend, the usage is standard for a deceased person, and the informatively at-work image is unlikely to be bettered. I've removed the other usage so this can be closed now. Chiswick Chap ( talk) 04:57, 27 July 2024 (UTC) reply
File:9th Doctor companions.jpg ( delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Smeggles ( notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This image seems largely redundant and can easily be replaced by non-free media without being detrimental to reader understanding. Has one ever considered Magneton?
