Assessment of articles

I notice you have recently assessed the Chichester Cathedral article as of "Low" importance.

Would you please take a look at my comments about the irregularity of assessment of significance, on the Anglicanism Project discussion page at [1].

I recommend all cathedrals except Canterbury be at "mid" rather than "low". And all parish churches at "low" unless they are of some exceptional significance. St Pauls Cathedral probably warrants a "high" along with Canterbury, as does Westminster Abbey. These are special cases.

We need some consistency. Many of the present ratings are ridiculous. I'm rather peeved that my lengthy perusal of the lists and detailed comments which address the problems seem to have gone ignored.

Amandajm ( talk) 03:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, that's good thinking. I happened to notice the article was unassessed on a brief perusal, and I suppose my reason for assessing it as "low" was my (somewhat small) knowledge of the cathedral itself and how it had relatively little impact on Anglicanism as a religion. But you are right; after reading comments at the Anglicanism WikiProject's talk page, it was rather silly to put it as "low", when every Anglican Cathedral in the UK is of some importance. That was me forgetting that Anglicanism is not Protestantism. ;) Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 10:13, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Looking for advice

Hi Peter, I know that this is outside your realm of interest, and let me be clear, I'm not asking you to get involved at all. However, with all of the relevant admin parties (Giggy, Pilotguy) seemingly on wiki-breaks, I thought I might quiz you for some help. I've been editing a biography of a living person ( Linda Darling-Hammond) who is under consideration for a US Cabinet position. The bio underwent some OTRS work a while ago (I don't really know what this means, to be frank) and since then the article has been edited heavily by a representative of the subject. This weekend I added some quotes from the subject. The quotes were strong and controversial, but since they were directly from the biographical subject and highly topical, I thought them relevant. They have been reverted citing BLP guidelines, which is okay. I'm just wondering what to do next - leave it alone? Find another way to include the material? I don't know how the OTRS thing factors into this, but it seems to be code for 'leave this alone'. Any advice? Sorry for being such a newbie, and if you're busy, or if this is too thorny for you, feel free to leave it alone. H0n0r ( talk) 00:59, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

No problem; I'm happy to look into pretty much anything. Hmm, this is odd. Per WP:BLP, the quotes, as long as they are sourced to reliable sources, and used in a neutral way, should be no problem. I don't believe that they were reverted per BLP though. Looking at the discussion page, it appears JDoorjam ( talk · contribs) and Flyte35 ( talk · contribs) suggested the quote with similar wording. Giggy tweaked it per MOS, but otherwise gave the OK from a non-OTRS point of view. Barbaramckenna ( talk · contribs) gave four reasons why the quote was inappropriate, and then continued to list further reasons below. Knowing nothing about the subject, I would say her reasons are relatively convincing, but as the quote is evidently by the subject and adequately sourced, I'm not seeing much of an issue from a BLP point of view. However, OTRS and BLP are highly problematic areas; my advice to you would be to leave the issue alone until there's some confirmation from OTRS. Majorly ( talk · contribs) (Al Tally) has resigned access, and Pilotguy is on a break, so an email to info-en-q@wikimedia.org would be able to clarify the issues surrounding the article, and any potential problems that may arise. Keep me updated. Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 10:00, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you so much. I'll keep out of it, and send an email - that sounds like the best route. BLP is more sensitive than I ever realized! Thank you, and have a good day. H0n0r ( talk) 12:38, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. :) You'll come to learn that BLP has caused endless problems in the past, and will continue to do so, but you did the right thing by taking the discussion route first. Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 12:42, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

A bit of help

I have noticed your message on your user page that you are not quite as active, so I understand any slowness in answering. However, I am still a bit confuddled about the proper ref structure. Could you possibly try to explain it in a nutshell?

I know there is always this but I always find that direct explanation is more beneficial.

I am mainly asking as to restructure the footnotes in McGill. Yes I am still working on it. =D

Thanks for any available help, Sunsetsunrise ( talk) 03:12, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, good to see that article coming along nicely! :) By ref structure, I presume you mean the inline citations (footnotes). To insert a website source, you would do this after the punctuation in the sentence you want sourced (replacing the access date with the current date):
<ref>{{cite web |url= |title= |accessdate=12 December 2008 |work= |publisher= |date= }}</ref>
In those fields, you put the web address in the URL part; the title of the work; the date you accessed it; the work it came from (ie. a journal); the publisher; and the date it was published. There are other parameters, should you require them, in {{ Cite web}}.
If you want to cite another medium (book source, newspaper, video, etc), have a look at what's available in Wikipedia:Citation templates. You should be able to find one specific to your need. The reason the parameters are used is because it gives the reader a lot more to go on. For example, if there was just a weblink and a date, there wouldn't be sufficient context to verify the website, and the reader would have to do some digging to find the full details. Alternatively, for the most common cite templates, put this into your monobook.js:
importScript('User:Mr.Z-man/refbuttons.js');
That will display the {{ cite web}}, {{ cite news}} and {{ cite book}} in the editing buttons above the screen. In one click, they will display the necessary parameters, including an automatic access date, making life easier in terms of citing sources (after putting that into your monobook, play around with it in your userspace, so you can get the hang of it).
Is that helpful to you? Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 11:00, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes, thank you so much. Sunsetsunrise ( talk) 18:26, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Valery Kobelev

Now i think that Valery Kobelev is ok for DYK. The Rolling Camel ( talk) 00:49, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Not yet, I'm afraid. All claims need to be sourced to reliable sources (not just the hook's claim, the whole article). It's still slightly too short, so it needs expanding. Websites need to be properly cited with the {{ cite web}} template; please use at least the basic parameters (publisher, date, and most importantly, an access date). Currently it is stub class, and thus automatically ineligible for DYK. With the references, and a bit of expansion, you might be able to push it to start class, but the deadline is drawing closer. Good luck, and best wishes, PeterSymonds ( talk) 10:52, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

But now its ready! Or is it? The Rolling Camel ( talk) 14:36, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Not yet. As I have said, the references need to be properly notated using the {{ cite web}} template. See that page for usage instructions. The banners at the top need to be removed only if you feel everything has been copyedited or cited correctly. Otherwise it looks good. A question...

Hi. I added a DYK template for the List of number-one Billboard Top Latin Albums of 2008, a project that I have been developing for the past months. This is the first time that I am submitting info for this section and I don't know if I did it right. Can you tell me if I'm doing this procedure right?.

Thanks, Jaespinoza ( talk) 01:42, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Nice article! :) As far as the formatting goes, it's all correct, so there are no issues there. However, fivefold expansions have to be done within five days, so unfortunately it's not eligible. See this diff, the earliest one before the eligible expansion date, which shows 2017 bytes of prose. Compared with the latest diff at time of reading/submission, the prose size has only increased by a few bytes. However, don't be discouraged; have a peruse through WP:DYK, and some of the expansions/new articles that have been submitted, approved/rejected, to see first hand what the acceptable standard is. That should help. Good luck, and feel free to pop back with questions/review requests. Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 01:54, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Shrek protection

Hi. I feel the Shrek article should be unprotected...it has been semi-protected since August because of minor vandalism, which based on the talk page, seems to have subsided. As you assisted in the protection process, perhaps you could offer your opinion now? Thanks much! -Mark 207.237.61.26 ( talk) 02:36, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mark. According to the logs, I did indeed protect it, but I only protected it against moves (the page was subject to page move vandalism). The administrator who semi-protected the page was NawlinWiki ( talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA), so a note to him might be in order. As far as my opinion goes, I think the semi-protection can probably be removed for a trial period. I am no longer an administrator, so I can't help with this, but a request here will be addressed, one way or another, quite quickly. Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 12:35, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

WikiCup notice

The 2009 WikiCup will begin on January 1, 2009. The first round will run through March 31, 2009. For more information on this tournament, read the " about" section on the main WikiCup page.

This year, we have a different system in calculating points. At User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions, you will find information about submitting your article (and other) work to earn points. Each contestant will have their own individual subpage for submitting completed work to us.

This year, User:ST47 will also be running one of his bots to calculate mainspace edits and read your submission subpages to calculate the point values you receive based on our scoring chart.

Questions or comment? Ask at the talk page or go directly to Garden or IMatthew's talk page. Good luck and Happy Holidays! -- aye matthew and Garden. 13:56, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Here you confirmed alternate hook 2, but I don't think it's true, and it doesn't seem to appear in the article. Was this an error? -- NE2 19:58, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

It is, I believe. The sentence reads: "Passing the fireman's park, State Route 343 passes through Sharksville, a local community. Just north of Sharksville, the highway intersects with U.S. Route 22 (the William Penn Highway)." That whole section is sourced to citation 1, and the source checks out. Best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 20:12, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
All the article says is that PA 343 intersects with US 22/WPH. A short piece of PA 343 is in fact the WPH, but only where it overlaps US 22. -- NE2 20:34, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Which just proved that the hook was right. The highway is named William Penn Highway officially on that segment, and that is a fair hook.Mitch32( Go Syracuse) 20:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
No - the hook says that PA 343 is part of the WPH, which is untrue; only the part of PA 343 that overlaps US 22 is part of the WPH (and the fact that it's the WPH there is obvious and not worthy of DYK). -- NE2 20:43, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Not completely trolling

At the time it was an accurate image of what outrage IWF has made across internets. Could have been kept at least until the thread was 404ed. Just didn't have the word sauce you NPOV elitarists require. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.102.224.157 ( talk) 19:43, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

It was inappropriate, done in bad faith and completely outside the context of what Wikipedia talk pages are for. Please review WP:TALK, and do not post potentially inflammatory content, despite the current dispute, in the future. Thanks, PeterSymonds ( talk) 19:46, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Alternatively, for the most common cite templates, put this into your monobook.js:
importScript('User:Mr.Z-man/refbuttons.js');

Keep up the good work, best, PeterSymonds ( talk) 18:17, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your help, I will keep that in mind while creating new articles here. Merry Christmas, Jaespinoza ( talk) 02:15, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, PeterSymonds!! I saw on this page that you were one of the members of the WikiProject Royalty. The project is very underrepresented among featured lists.
