Tyndall Glacier

Hey, thanks for your work on Tyndall Glacier (Alaska)! My first serious content work wasn't nearly as good. I've marked it as reviewed. Feel free to ping me or message me on my talk page if you have any questions. Quick tip: when referring to content that is present in another article, there's a nice template {{ Further}} which puts a hatnote at the top of the section. That's often preferable to something like "see Cow for further information". Ovinus ( talk) 20:34, 28 July 2022 (UTC) reply

Hey, thank you!! That's a good trick with the {{Further}} template—it felt clunky as I was writing it so I'm glad there's a way around it. Cheers! Penitentes ( talk) 20:50, 28 July 2022 (UTC) reply

Hi, again

Hope you're well, Penitentes. If you're not aware, Wikipedia has a process called Did You Know? which appears on the main page. Essentially, when an article is created or greatly expanded, it can be nominated to appear as a little "hook" on the main page, for 12 or 24 hours (depending on how many hooks are enqueued). For example, for Fawn Fire (2021), a fun hook might have been: Did you know that the alleged arsonist who caused the 2021 Fawn Fire in California, which burned 8,578 acres of land, claimed she was only trying to purify bear urine? Alas there's a 7-day window on these things. But next time you publish or greatly expand an article, and you think there's something funny worth a DYK nomination (probably not true of every article—can't think of anything "hooky" in Tyndall Glacier (Alaska)), feel free to nominate it. Ovinus ( talk) 05:32, 25 August 2022 (UTC) reply

Wow, thank you. I knew about the DYK process but thought it was limited to Good/Featured articles of any age, so the recency thing is actually really cool. I'll keep an eye out for any interesting hooks/factoids in upcoming articles. Penitentes ( talk) 13:00, 25 August 2022 (UTC) reply

I just reviewed your article on Tulainyo Lake and it was GREAT. I learned a lot from it and discovered there are people willing to hike up to places like that with scuba gear. Here I was thinking hiking with ham radio gear was nuts! I have a soft spot for the Sierra backcountry, as a Boy Scout I really enjoyed my time backpacking so these articles always make my day and when they're well written it's even better. I hope you write more articles and if you need help or run into problems please reach out on my talk page. Dr vulpes ( 💬📝) 21:12, 26 August 2022 (UTC) reply
That's so kind of you!! I didn't know too much about Tulainyo before I started writing it—I'm also a pretty active Sierra backcountry enthusiast and really admired Tulainyo on my way up Mount Russell. Ended up digging into it a bit and kept finding interesting little nuggets that I thought people might like.
Really glad you enjoyed, I'll try to keep writing more when neat stuff pops up! Penitentes ( talk) 13:04, 27 August 2022 (UTC) reply
Seconding Dr vulpes. A thrilling and compelling read; hope my copyedits didn't detract. I urge you to nom this one for DYK. :) Ovinus ( talk) 17:19, 27 August 2022 (UTC) reply
Thanks for the good feedback and the copyedits! All were well-deserved, I'm sure, I don't write/revise in a super linear way.
I figured maybe the Wedding of the Waters could be a neat DYK? I'll go over that subsection and make sure each sentence is sourced before I maybe nom it. Cheers!! Penitentes ( talk) 21:34, 27 August 2022 (UTC) reply
A dude with a gord was set up there to get some water, then had it carried to Death Valley using a Native American runner, Pony Express, miner and burro, 20-mule team, stagecoach, train, car and plane. Yeah that's pretty neat! Dr vulpes ( 💬📝) 21:49, 27 August 2022 (UTC) reply

Yellowstone fires of 1988

Hi Penitentes, hope you're well! Really nice work on Mosquito Fire—34,000 page views. :) I mentioned some of your work to a fellow editor ( SandyGeorgia), who asked whether you would be interested in the article Yellowstone fires of 1988. It's up for a featured article review ( WP:FAR), meaning that the community is debating whether it should be kept as a featured article, because it's not up to standard at the moment. (See Wikipedia:Featured_article_review/Yellowstone_fires_of_1988/archive1.) Essentially, if the article is cleaned up and referenced to standard, the article will be kept as a featured article. Like Sandy, I think you have the writing skills and subject-matter interest to perhaps enjoy that process. Of course, it can be rather arduous to work through a long article and respond to others' comments, but I wanted to offer. Ovinus ( talk) 21:56, 19 September 2022 (UTC) reply

Oh, cheers! The Mosquito Fire was a just a right place/right time thing. Any fire that looks like a nuke going off within 24 hours of starting is probably going to earn itself an article before long, and I'm sure once it's contained it'll be down to ~20 views a day.
That said, that's a kind offer and I'd be happy to help out. There's not a lot of wildfire FAs and I'd hate to lose one. I'll check in on what needs doing tonight and tomorrow! Hope I can assist. Penitentes ( talk) 22:30, 19 September 2022 (UTC) reply

DYK for Tulainyo Lake

On 28 September 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tulainyo Lake, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1937, water from Tulainyo Lake (pictured) was carried by runner, horseback, donkey, covered wagon, twenty-mule team, stagecoach, train, car, and plane to Death Valley to mark a highway opening? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tulainyo Lake. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page ( here's how, Tulainyo Lake), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

El Dorado Fire

Howdy there. I found myself perusing through wildfire articles again and am just struck by the amount of information available in your articles vis-a-vis mine. I wanted to ask, then, if you could look at El Dorado Fire and give me some pointers for adding context to it. – ♠Vamí _IV†♠ 15:12, 11 May 2023 (UTC) reply

Howdy yourself, and thank you! Sometimes I feel like my articles end up more exhausting than exhaustive for readers, so I'm glad you like them. I personally think El Dorado Fire well deserves its GA status; it's a tightly written page, but if you're looking to add more I am happy to help.
The fire's old InciWeb page is broken as a result of a site update, but some of the daily updates from it are still available through the Internet Archive. You could add information from those wrt the fire's progression.
The only major addition I might think of is some more context for the conditions the fire burned in - you mention weather and terrain, which were critical, but a short and broad discussion of the intense 2020 fire season in California might help too. I wonder if any news sources mention difficulty getting enough personnel or equipment to the incident, or the drought's contribution. Penitentes ( talk) 14:44, 12 May 2023 (UTC) reply
