Sock problem

Greetings ... about 2 years ago you blocked a user, Miamiboyzinhere, who was repeatedly changing categories for Orlando-area attractions because, as far as he was concerned, Orlando meant "city limits only." Said user started creating sock accounts and using anonymous IPs to do the same thing, and later apparently gave up. Another user, User:Averette, has started making the same sorts of edits, changing categories to suit his view of things without discussing matters. At the time, I saw some evidence suggesting that Miamiboyzinhere might be a bad-hand account being operated by Averette, but not really enough to go on. Pending how the user reacts to the reverts back to the original categories, we may have found the true master puppeteer. Any guidance/assistance you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks for all your hard work here. -- McDoobAU93 ( talk) 05:22, 18 April 2010 (UTC) reply

Birch reduction

Hi there.

I chose your name (and four others) from WikiProject Chemistry, specifically for organic, as an active Wikipedian in the field, who might be able to help.

I have been working to help Howard Zimmerman with the article abo Birch reduction. Prof. Zimmerman wrote a new, much more detailed article - I helped them format it, and tried to help with avoiding WP:OR and suchlike. It has now been merged into the original article, but I am most concerned about these types of remarks he made;

while Wikipedia is great for non-scientific stuff, for scientific stuff the editors and administrators seem to want textbook material and not the original refereed literature. Thus V8rik thought that Jerry March's book (great for superficial coverage) on two pages has only the basics of the Birch Reduction and nothing really on its mechanism. The texts don't touch the matter with rare exceptions. So to rely on texts and to treat refereed literature by experts in the field as either irrelevant or wrong - seems crazy to people who work directly with the subject. The texts often are laden with errors and don't keep up with advances.

I wonder if you could contact Hezimmerman ( talk · contribs). I am sure they have a lot to offer Wikipedia, if only they are guided in the way we work together.

Many thanks,  Chzz   ►  01:22, 20 April 2010 (UTC) reply

Hello Jayron,

I have made an edit in BACnet page. I have added a BACnet Testing facility section in the page. This section was added from a neutral point of view. Recently I have also added a link to section pointing to a news. Some wiki user has deleted the section without any warning. Can you please guide me as to why was the section deleted and how can I get it back on the BACnet page.

The user that removed it left a message on the talk page of the article. You could respond to their concerns, and re-add your text. The user that removed it was a brand new user, which is somewhat suspicious... I would respond to their concerns, and re-add your text once to see what they say. If you need additional people to comment on their concerns, you could try asking at WP:EAR. -- Jayron 32 14:48, 23 April 2010 (UTC) reply

Curious

Thanks for the assist. When you say blank articles display the db tag automatically, do you mean a bot finds and tags them, or something in MediaWiki automatically adds them to CAT:CSD? -- Floquenbeam ( talk) 12:36, 26 April 2010 (UTC) reply

It appears to be the latter. Not sure, but when you removed the db-tag from the article, it was still displaying. I am not sure if that was because the article needed to be purged to display your edit, or if it was some more subtle situation, but to be safe, I added a placeholder sentance. -- Jayron 32 12:44, 26 April 2010 (UTC) reply
It didn't work with an experiment I tried, so I'm inclined to believe it was just a MediaWiki hiccup. I haven't seen other blank pages with no db tags show up in CAT:CSD, tho it might be new. Still, your placeholder was much better than my period anyway, so no matter what the hell is going on, it was a good move. -- Floquenbeam ( talk) 12:49, 26 April 2010 (UTC) reply

Brian Quintana for U.S. Senate is a national campaign committee to elect Brian Quintana to the United States Senate where he would be one of a hundred members. Hairhorn and camerscott who tried to get Brian Quintana deleted are now trying to delete this page which is notable and should stand alone. Brian Quintana is restricted and those following this most watched Senate race cannot post there. Thus the need for a new page. Election is June 8, 2010 and should generate much traffic between now and then, I see that you voted to keep Brian Quintana, Can you voice your vote to KEEP Brian Quintana for U.S. Senate? Thanks!

Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

John Moultrie, Lieutenant Governor of East Florida under Governor Grant

You deleted John Moultrie, Lieutenant Governor of East Florida under Governor Grant as a copyvio. Another editor created the article, and I have not seen it or the original source. Since the article was a copyvio, I am not asking you to restore the full article, but please consider cutting it down to a non-copyvio stub with a better name and listing the original source as a reference. A lieutenant governor is usually notable. If the source from which the text was copied was published a long time ago (the 1911 Brittanica, for example), the work may have fallen into the public domain. After you closed the thread Breein1007 had started, he/she went to the Talk:Freekeh page and removed this section of Huldra's post (the one Breein1007 was talking about). Alex Day Deletion Proposal - Actually Vendetta Vandalism ?

Hi Jayron32,

I see you removed the proposal for deletion from the Alex Day article. I was going to do it myself, but since I'm still pretty new around here, I thought I'd seek some advice before I did anything. Just moments after I posted a request for assistance on User_talk:Fetchcomms, you came along and removed the deletion notice.

The article was tagged for deletion by User: 1BettingDisk at 14:17 on 5 May 2010. Interestingly, this user account was created only minutes before, at 13:24 on 5 May 2010. One might think that the user account was created for the sole purpose of getting this one article deleted.

Another interesting fact: I received a strange personal message on YouTube from someone called HandyScholar - a person I'd never heard of, and whose true identity I still do not know. This person claimed to be "curious and confused" and asked me how I managed to write such a "comprehensive" article about Alex Day. I looked on Wikipedia and found an account for someone named User: HandyScholar. The only activity ever for this account was to go, 5 minutes after it was created, and vote to delete an article about ChartJackers - a pop band of which Alex Day was a member.

Now we see a similar pattern of behavior towards this article. I'm very suspicious of the motives. It may be that User: 1BettingDisk has a personal grudge against Alex Day, and is actually the same person as User: HandyScholar.

One additional fact raises some suspicion. The "issues" cited in the proposal for deletion are addressed extensively on the article's discussion page. And yet, this User: 1BettingDisk did not see fit to make any comment or contribution to that discussion.

If this user is carrying out a personal vendetta of some sort, I wonder whether their account should be closed. I understand they can always create a new account, or simply vandalize the article without signing in at all. But it seems to me that something should be done.

Thanks for your help.

Please could you remove poorly sourced controversial/coatrack material on living persons from the article as you see fit - using administrative enforcement to prevent readdition if necessary, if it is now going to stay up for at least another week. As a 'collegue' of 'RT's I have been putting his case for the defence ! As you (and other) arbitrary editors appear to have taken against him... so you have denied him the chance to reply. 'RT' closed his account c. February '10. He thought that was it... nothing more to say... no more bother. So it was until a few days ago. For the record, me, 'RT' and c.thirty other people 'inhabit' a room as part of a tiresome government training / placement scheme. Any one of those other people could have (and do have) access to the computer. To single out 'RT' strikes me as nothing more than an act of cyber bullying by probably socially inadequate nerds. Solution ?... delete 'RT's site (user page / discussion) as he himself did some three months back. He has let it be known that he has 'done his bit' (in the correct manner) to update / clarify wiki' sites of interest to him. End of story, or, so he hoped ! Quite how a shared IP address should point to him (and him alone) remains unclear. He has no further interest in wiki' and that has been the case for c. three months now. I'll say right now that Wikipedia's coverage of pop culture is woefully weak in this regard, standards of notability tend to be much more lax for topics around popular TV shows and the like, likely due to the sheer weight of fighting the problem. Most of these articles are basically entirely in-universe plot summaries with little else on the wider significance of the subject. The crux of the problem can be understood by reading the (now historical) essay Wikipedia:Pokémon test. I would personally recommend against adding to the problem, but you are free to make any additions you deem, in good faith, to be worthwhile. --Jayron32 04:56, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

So are you saying that many of these TV episodes should not be there and are against the rules but it is too hard to enforce the rules? And that you recommend not adding to the problem by creating new articles on TV episodes? Assorg ( talk) 06:04, 11 May 2010 (UTC) reply

What I am saying is that I don't get involved in works of fiction for precisely the reasons I outlined in my post. I make no statements on any individual articles or their individual appropriateness, and you are free to make any good faith additions to the encyclopedia you wish. Please be bold and expand the encyclopedia to the best of your ability. -- Jayron 32 06:07, 11 May 2010 (UTC) reply
??? Maybe you don't want to hurt others' feelings so I won't ask you to say that some article is no good. However, are you suggesting that I shouldn't create an article of an obscure TV episode unless I want to be bold and ignore the rules? What I want to avoid is to make the effort and then get a speedy delete or even regular delete. Assorg ( talk) 06:32, 11 May 2010 (UTC) reply
No, if you want to create an article about a TV episode, make sure it meets the baseline inclusion criteria. See WP:GNG. Dig up some quality references which discuss the TV episode, look for reliable sources such as published books, respected magazines and journals, stuff like that. Its impossible to speak in vague terms about what might or might not be acceptable. I can only say that you should do some research, gather sources, and use them to write a quality article. If you can find extensive, reliable writing about a specific TV episode, then have at it! Wikipedia will be all the better for your additions. -- Jayron 32 06:43, 11 May 2010 (UTC) reply

Well i really don`t know how to handle this situation since everybody who tried to do what this user does understood the problem. I thought that ANI is the best place to clarify this.. How should i proceed in this situation? What should I choose that is effective and that implies some disciplinary measures? iadrian ( talk) 01:52, 27 May 2010 (UTC) reply

I have noticed on Requests for mediation the following: All parties should sign below, indicating that they agree to mediate the issue. If any party fails to sign within seven days, or if a party indicates they do not agree, then the mediation will be rejected. Only "Agree" or "Disagree" and signatures should appear here; any comments will be removed, but can be made at the talk page. - so if the other user refuses then what? iadrian ( talk) 02:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC) reply

NPP Help

Hi! I recently tried to start New Page Patrolling, but it obviously isn't working out apparent from the numerous talk page messages I got today correcting me. Has the range block been relaxed because of the collateral damage, or has he found another way in? One of his new tricks it to try and remove the ANI discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive612#ROBERT TAGGART, so I've requested indef semi-protection for the archive. Favonian ( talk) 20:04, 28 May 2010 (UTC) reply

Thanks for the heads up. I had disabled the block entirely due to some serious collateral damage problems. I have reinstated the block as anon-only, account creation disabled, but registerred accounts can still edit. That should cause him to weed out his sock farm as he will be prevented from creating new accounts at an alarming rate. I had hoped that after 2 weeks he'd have forgotten about this. Apparently he has not. -- Jayron 32 02:48, 29 May 2010 (UTC) reply

They are evidently the same person, but his focus on the talk pages of Scientizzle ( talk · contribs), Enric Naval ( talk · contribs) and myself seems too much of a coincidence, since we have all been involved in stopping recent socks of RT. Blocked Sockpuppet Evasion

  • Hi. You have blocked this user ( User:Knight Crawler X) for sockpuppetry and 3RR. However, he seemed to have returned into editing using his IP address. Although very clear on the way of grammar editing that this user is indeed the blocked user and have clearly stated in the comment that he was the blocked user, this user ( User:Active Banana) keeps on returning the comments. It seems like the only reason he is returning the comment is that because no other Wikipedia users would support his consensus except for the blocked user. Please do something about this. Veterinary advice?

Dear Jayron, I appreciate your contributions on the Ref Desks, but here I think you erred in judgment and crossed the line of giving health care advice (albeit veterinary rather than "medical"). Do you really think someone seeking free advice on a RD is going to "call [his or her] veterinarian" when that follows your statements: "...most things humans eat is generally safe for dogs. ...any simple vegetable or meat or cereal that you would is probably OK. Using the qualifiers "generally" and "probably" may be too easily disregarded as simple common sense or a layman's disclaimer. I added what I felt was a responsible remark (outdented as replying to directly to the OP) based on my own layman's knowledge and concerns, but also am writing here directly to you, in an appeal for your consideration. --Cheers, Deborahjay ( talk) 11:03, 19 June 2010 (UTC) reply

Birch reduction

Hi there.

I chose your name (and four others) from WikiProject Chemistry, specifically for organic, as an active Wikipedian in the field, who might be able to help.

I have been working to help Howard Zimmerman with the article abo Birch reduction. Prof. Zimmerman wrote a new, much more detailed article - I helped them format it, and tried to help with avoiding WP:OR and suchlike. It has now been merged into the original article, but I am most concerned about these types of remarks he made;

while Wikipedia is great for non-scientific stuff, for scientific stuff the editors and administrators seem to want textbook material and not the original refereed literature.

The user that removed it left a message on the talk page of the article. You could respond to their concerns, and re-add your text.

Hello Jayron,

As per your advise I have added the BACnet Testing section in the BACnet page. But again it has been deleted by a wiki user this time a different one. Brian Quintana for U.S. Senate

Senate? Thanks!

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn ( submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue ( submissions) and Norway Arsenikk ( submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone ( submissions) and White Shadows ( submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone!

I don't feel very comfortable with deleting myself any talk from an administrator though, because I wouldn't want any one to think that I am covering my tracks or anything...could you maybe give me a hand on that one? ROBERT TAGGART

I be new to all this gubbins, but, no doubt some editor will know of a way to do the decent thing... let 'RT' disappear ! The Syth ! ( talk) 19:29, 7 May 2010 (UTC) reply

Is this enough? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coming_of_Age_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cafe_(Seinfeld_episode) I don't want to make a fuss. I just want to know. I might make a new article if I know in advance what is ok. Assorg (talk) 04:15, 10 May 2010 (UTC) It may be OK if you can find reliable sources which are clearly independent of the subject, and which show a certain depth of coverage to allow the article to pass minimum notability standards. Additionally, Wikipedia articles need to focus primarily on covering topics from a perspective outside of the work of fiction itself.

The next drama out should be in about 5-6 weeks. 1st one was July 2009, 2nd one January 2010. 3rd should be July 2010. I am interested. So is User:PCHS-NJROTC and User:TFOWR see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Suomi_Finland_2009/Wikipedia_Improvement_Conference_2010 Suomi Finland 2009 ( talk) 17:59, 30 May 2010 (UTC) reply

May I suggest 5-11 July 2009. This is the first full week of July. If so, consider letting a few people know in mid-June. A few days before, create a template. On 5 July 2009 or the day before, make an announcement on the drama fest page of Wikipedia, ANI. Suomi Finland 2009 ( talk) 16:22, 31 May 2010 (UTC) reply

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata ( submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn ( submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 ( submissions) and White Shadows ( submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium ( submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 ( submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows ( submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

Thank you.-- PrimeViper ( talk) 16:27, 9 June 2010 (UTC) reply
    • I believe you are mistaken. I did not place a block on the above user. The proper place to request help is either from User:CoolHandLuke, who did place the block, or WP:ANI. Good luck! -- Jayron 32 00:46, 10 June 2010 (UTC) reply

Dramaout

The next one is due. How about 5 July to 10 July 2010? The American holiday is 4 July so that is not good.

This user will participate in the 2010 Great Wikipedia Dramaout, a dedicated effort to exclusively article write for five days.

Sounds good. So long as I don't have to set it up and run it this time, I'm in! -- Jayron 32 03:03, 15 June 2010 (UTC) reply

I will consider running it. What advice can you give? I will consider running at as "temporary and volunteer coordinator" if you agree to be "unofficial advisor and friend" for the dramaout. I do not like grandiose titles like "Chief Executive President of the Wikipedia Section and Admiral of the Dramaout"

1. Is there a list of people interested in receiving information? Is this canvassing? Is this spam? 2. Post on ANI? Suomi Finland 2009 ( talk) 15:01, 15 June 2010 (UTC) reply

The list of past participants is on the old Dramaout pages. ANI and the Village Pump would be good places to advertise. Its not canvassing if you aren't trying to get votes for something. There's someone who has a bot that can spam the talk pages of the old participants. If I remember who has that, I'll let you know. Otherwise, just write a nice note, copy and paste it to the talk pages of everyone that did it last time and also hit up ANI and the VP and maybe the Signpost. -- Jayron 32 01:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC) reply

You are mentioned (in a nice way) on ANI about previously helping out on the dramaouts! Thank you. Suomi Finland 2009 ( talk) 15:08, 17 June 2010 (UTC) reply

I am unsurprised. At least he's not even bright enough to use the unblock template, so no one is going to notice. Well, we'll see how this goes when it expires in a day. -- Jayron 32 02:47, 17 June 2010 (UTC) reply
