Thank you, Heather. I'm still not confident in the role of host. I keep getting into mischief while doing Teahouse things like sending invites. I check a new user's contribs to try to make my invites personal. Found an odd pattern and ended up embroiled in my first SockPuppet investigation. I agonized over my failure to assume good faith, especially after a sarcastic comment in the SPI from a new user that I accused. Discovering that I was right was a relief.
I have to limit my Teahouse time. Checked my stat's: 47% in user_talk (sending invites and such) and WP (Teahouse) but down to only 31% in articles. I'm not leaving or even taking a break, not when I get to read things like:
{quote|Thank you for the encouragement and offer to review the article I will write. Thinking my tiny contributions were deleted against the policy, without a chance for me to explain beforehand, I lost some confidence in contributing to Wikipedia. The advice and support from you and some of the wikipedians nevertheless helped restore some confidence in Wikipedia. I may contribute to other articles first but I definitely will return to the article on education controversy, perhaps before Hong Kong schools go strike again after protesting against the Tiananmen Square Massacre 23 years ago. Please add that page to your watch list and stay tuned. :)--Jabo-er (talk) 16:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)}

We need to establish an automated greeting system where we can refer users to you to be greeted with Teahouse's greeting message. I was thinking of maybe Category:Wikipedians to be greeted by WikiProject Teahouse? We just get too many newbies at WP:AFC with too many questions and we need to offload teaching them Wikipedia's intracies to someone else so that we can focus on the AFC backlog. What do you think? Hello again from the Help Project! In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already. Another important and frequently used help page, Wikipedia:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages. In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Wikipedia:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch. Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name. |

I noticed the links had changed and checked the history. So I would like you to take a look at my question.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 22:02, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Heather,
I hope you're fine there. I'd like to ask for some assistance in my succeeding contributions to Wikipedia. In particular, I'd like to know how can I deal correctly with the REDIRECT notice in my SANDBOX, redirecting it to my 1st article, Paul Tyma (who'm I find very interesting to write about because of his innovative contributions to computer technology). Is there a proper workaround to this? I've research the many Wikipedia HELP pages but can't seem to find a definitive answer. Although I know now that I can directly contribute articles, I'm just very anxious if I'll be breaking some rules if I make some steps that I'm not sure of. For the time being, I'll contribute again using the Article Wizard system. I'm looking forward to your much needed response. Thanks and best regards. Word.Farmer02 ( talk) 06:36, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Heather. Thank you very much for the response, it really helped me a lot in understanding how the process goes (and I will likely raise some more queries when I encounter other similar concerns). Once I get to have more free time from my work, I will likely focus on contributing more articles as well as edit/copy-edit those that require some much-needed enhancements. Best regards. Word.Farmer02 ( talk) 04:22, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Heather. I'd like to ask for some help in my second contribution Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Face lift dentistry which unfortunately was declined by an already non-existent user Schenka, with this comment: I'm not sure if Face lift Dentistry in itself is worthy of a separate article from Cosmetic_dentistry but this article as written clearly sounds like an advert for Dr. Sam Muslin. Since the procedure seems to be patented and trademarked by him, I suppose it might always be the case. If so, the references section must be improved to indicate the notability of this trademarked procedure. - Is it normal for a user to decline an article for creation, then suddenly cease existing from being a user? I do find that dubious, if not irregular. I just came across Face Lift Dentistry on TV and the Internet and got so interested with it, which prompted me to research and write on that article. And it's far from being an advertisement as I've tried very hard to secure reliable sources, including the actual US Patent records of the said procedure. Why should it be incorporated with Cosmetic_dentistry when I have also discussed the significant differences between the two? I do hope you can help explain to me further if indeed Schenka is in the side of reason, and why did he just disappear after declining my considerably-researched and written piece. And if I can still "save" that article, what must I do? Nonetheless, I'll continue contribute new articles and edits to Wikipedia. Hoping for the best. Cheers. Word.Farmer02 ( talk) 07:41, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Much respect to you as the main technogeek that works on the Teahouse pages themselves, but it is my personal feeling that Moxy's revision may have been half right. Blue is the traditional color for links, right? And that is a link, right? So how about making the boldface "Questions" blue and leaving the rest black? Unless my mouse went over that sentence, I would not suspect that it was a link! Just sayin....I leave the graphic folks to get the graphics as they should be, as I haven't enough technical knowledge to be of much help in implementing any changes. As a kid I was one of the many in the P.C skirmish, ended up eating both FAGS and FADS in the end!
Oh and if you think this is facepalming due to time and language evolution,
wait until you see COON (cheese), Redskins (candy) and Golden Gaytime (ice cream)!
(All of which still sell! Most Aussies look at the nicer definition with these names.
Only the hateful few see the horrid ways to twist the name.
Although I can't excuse Redskins for having a Native American on wrappers. Wonka finally removed him after buying the company thankfully!)

..... Ahh... I'll need to look this over some more... There are a lot of things that don't make sense to me about the current structure of the templates, and I'm betting that is why there are "issues" arising from them. Would you be offended if I copied all of the templates to a section in my userspace to work on them and see what I can do?
Technical 13 (
talk) 17:58, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Yeah, the edits I need to make to seem logical to me and work are going to be partly T&E and I would rather not do that to the actual templates, hence my thoughts to do it in my user space. Technical 13 ( talk) 18:11, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
hey y'all. Changing the way the timestamp is displayed shouldn't affect HostBot. The timestamps are set during the profile creation workflow, which just uses (a big ol' mess of) template calls. Fortunately as Heather mentioned the timestamps only break the layout when the user viewing the page has the Comments on local time gadget enabled, so most users won't see the funny bug you noticed. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:15, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Esta Henry, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Romanian and Aquamarine ( check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Just trying this code out, which Technical worked out in WikiLove. It looks clean to me but I'm not sure about the right-aligned message and signature, which pulls the eye away from the badge text. What do you think??
|
That right align is in the badge template and can be easily moved to be centered or left aligned, my purpose for doing it that was was to the message wouldn't detract from the badge itself by being out of default eyesight. Regardless where you think the message should be, I think the signature should stay on that side at least as it is the last thing in the box and "closes" it best IMHO. Open Help Conference The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation. It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help. There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on. |

Due to my self-perceived success with the modification to the large template, I've decided to tackle adding the ability to specify a number of badges received in the Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Small template and have set up a series of -sandbox templates ( Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Small-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Answer-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Easter egg-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Host-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Question-sandbox) and have been testing the changes on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host landing#Technical 13. For some reason, setting the value of badges to "yes" or "1" changes the placement of the badge. Also, the easter-egg badge seems smaller to me, and I'm not sure why. I know you are familiar with some of this coding stuff, so I figured I'd have you look at it and see if you can offer some improvements. I'm also asking Soni, Writ, Sarah, and Ocaasi to take a peek at it as well and see if we can't get it working right. Thanks. Technical 13 ( talk) 22:22, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Heather, how are you doing? I wanted to discuss the Teahouse model/structure and your thoughts on the possibility of using such structure and basic model for Wikipedia:Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. Over the last few months DR/N has been attempting to adjust to user concerns/complaints about the formality and structure of the Dispute Resolution process. As you may know, User:Steven Zhang has put in a great deal of work in establishing the DR/N and its original WikiProject. Over time, the original structure of DR/N was changed. In order to address many of the concerns, the formality of DR/N is being lowered back into the informal and non binding mediation forum it was and still is intended for.
One of the ideas that Steven and many of the DR/N volunteers (at least I hope) has taken to heart is the idea of being gentle and polite and having a friendly location to discuss the dispute within the framework of Wikipedia policy and guidelines. This is what I believe to be the basic idea of the "Teahouse". I also suggested that, perhaps the volunteers could personalize themselves more as human beings and individuals (that personality behind the username) by creating a Volunteer landing page similar to that of the Teahouse Host Landing, where volunteers add themselves to our list through his process, creating a small bio about themselves at the same time for editors to look through and see the editors assisting at DR/N. The Teahouse model seems to be, the very best choice and direction to take DR/N. I am not sure if I have already mentioned this before to you or not, but we would like to look further into the more technical logistics of function, mark-up and where it may just be possible to copy almost verbatim any code and text that would be transferable/usable with attribution. I am not Wikignome, but I manage. I wanted to be sure and get your thoughts (or further thoughts if I did mention this already) as I attempt to put everything together. I may have already created a page somewhere. Need to look.-- Amadscientist ( talk) 18:46, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I picked you from the list over at WP:RETENTION at random, well, okay, not really at random, I'm jealous you are 42 on there, which is very random, but not pseudo-random, if you catch my drift.
I noticed it is not possible to use wp:retention which methinks sticks out less than WP:RETENTION, because nobody has created the necessary redirect for lowercase yet. The redirect is already there for wp:teahouse which works fine and send the clicking-user over to WP:TEAHOUSE. Anyhoo, I tried to create the redirect-page, but apparently the-encyclopedia-anyone-can-edit is not applicable on project pages, which is a shame. Besides having 42, and a registered uid, and a shiny spinning thing, you also have a WMF paystub, so presumably you *can* create the redirect. Please click here, wp:retention, and then paste in this magic incantation:
#REDIRECT [[WP:RETENTION]]

Seeing as you're a talented designer, and I'm a clumsy ox, I was wondering if you could do something for a fellow Teahouse host.
Could you design a barnstar for me that I'd like to create to award to those who make positive contributions to Cleveland related articles?
I was thinking just incorporating the Indians' "C" logo ( ) into the typical wiki barnstar.

Hello Heatherawalls. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.
The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.
If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)
If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.
Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards-- Fuhghettaboutit ( talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Hi folks,
We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.
We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.
Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.
Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.
Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on future speakers or wiki-related activities.
For further details, please see: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, September 2016. Mark your calendars now for the 3rd Wednesday in October, the 26th, when we will have a brief presentation.

Hello Heatherawalls,
I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.
I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.
Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.
Thank you,
Bowen

Hello
Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.
We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Hi Heatherawalls, thank you very much for creating the Teahouse's logo, WP_teahouse_logo.png. The image's license currently requires attribution wherever the logo is used. If this is intentional, no worries. However, you may like to donate the image to the public domain by adding {{ pd-self}} and/or {{ CC0}} to the image's description page. If you do so, the people at the Teahouse can use the logo in the header of the page without having to worry about attribution and licensing. Thank you very much in advance and best regards, ~ ToBeFree ( talk) 21:14, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.
The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.
In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

{quote|Thank you for the encouragement and offer to review the article I will write. Thinking my tiny contributions were deleted against the policy, without a chance for me to explain beforehand, I lost some confidence in contributing to Wikipedia. The advice and support from you and some of the wikipedians nevertheless helped restore some confidence in Wikipedia. I may contribute to other articles first but I definitely will return to the article on education controversy, perhaps before Hong Kong schools go strike again after protesting against the Tiananmen Square Massacre 23 years ago. Please add that page to your watch list and stay tuned. :)--Jabo-er (talk) 16:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)}

Do you think a bot can greet people listed at the aforementioned category and remove them from it once they have been greeted? — Ahnoneemoos ( talk) 20:40, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

So, ya... I got the image thing good, I just can't figure out at the moment why some people have h2 lines that are short and others go to the edge of the screen. I'm befuddled... Do you see the same thing? Any ideas? — User:Technical 13 ( C • M • Click to learn how to view this signature as intended ) 00:21, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
At least make it searchable. It's existed since 1943!
I tried "Fags candy" and it didn't redirect to FADS. Been a while since I've edited on wiki.
You likely know the search tricks better than I recall! :)
(At least "FAGS" redirects to "fag" which leads to the candy...)

|

The fact was ... that The Daughter of Dawn is a rare, full-length silent film from 1920, with an all Native American cast, that had only been shown once until being rediscovered and restored 85 years later? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Daughter of Dawn.

We hope you can join us today, Wednesday, from 6 p.m. on, at our July Bay Area WikiSalon. This month only, we are going to be at Noisebridge, a hackerspace/makerspace 1.5 blocks from the 16th & Mission BART station (see the link for directions). Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! ( Registering ahead of time is still helpful, as always, as it will help us plan ahead.)
Come and hang out, have some light snacks. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring your editing device if you plan to edit.
Also, Pete just published a writeup of the Wikidojo exercise we did last month. Your comments welcome, if he missed anything! http://wikistrategies.net/ghost-town-royals-wikidojo
The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather at Bay Area WikiSalon to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. Mark you calendars now.
We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend.

Hi folks,
We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon.
