Local places

I have the necessary data to generate a list of places within a muncipality. This would be a list of the places with an assigned postal code and an estimate of the size.

This wouldn't work out for all places. Larger cities are subdivided in areas with their own postal code and postal place. I'm not sure if I can always mark such ares within a city.

Probably it would be best to build a list with a script and add each subsection manually to each muncipality.

Famous residents

I've made some bots to generate lists of authors, musicians and others. Those could make lists of the same persons for the famous residents in the muncipalities. The only thing necessary to do this is to invert the person names into muncipality names.

Probably I need a bot to get them out of my article base also. And I'm not quite sure if I always has a basic category, ie I may have an oboist which isn't a musician.

Also, if I do this I have to automate the update process somehow. A person moving doesn't create a problem but when a musician writes a book all enlistments should change.

The list would contain about 1200 norwegian persons within the category art on the list of Norwegians, estimated to reach 2500-3000 when completed.

Before I do this there should be some consencus that this is in fact something wanted.

A more limited list is Kunstnere — next on list Einar (Halfdan) Berger

Various usefull links

Some of the following links are removed from article pages because they are not always reliable!

Nordre Land

Please accept my apologies if I've in any way offended (the comment on spelling was intended to be critical of my own spelling as I went back to correct it)! The materials & photos you’ve added are great. They add a great deal to the appreciation of the area, which is important for those of us who have not yet visited it.
Rock carvings at Møllerstufossen, more than 6000 years old
Main house Halmrast, Nordre Land museum, ca 1700
Part of my comment was that with either the Firefox or the Netscape browser (as implemented on my older machine) , the Nordre Land photos wind up on the lower right hand side, way down under the Infobox. Hard for me on my browser to see there – I have to scroll down over a blank region. That’s why I made a change – but I’ll defer to your (the contributor’s) judgment as to what is best.
Perhaps you’d consider something like what is shown here? One image on the left and one image shown on the right.

No problem, I simply hasn't given it a thought! I belive the layout should be adapted as people see it fits when more text is added to the pages.

And when it comes to the language, spellig and so forth, .. I add the facts and the story about the places and some other must figure out the correct grammer! :)

Agtfjott

An other thing, I don't have photos of all the places but if you or someone else drops me a note I could take the time to take a couple of images. Most of the time it won't be high quality high res as it takes to much time fumbling with my Zeiss, even if that produce great picture quality.

The photos I've posted is mostly snapshots with a Minolta digital.

Photos & Other Comment

You must live in the area, if you are so kind as to offer to take photos! Almost any photo in any municipality in Oppland or adjacent Hedmark or ___ would be great. The ones you've just been adding make it a great pleasure to go back over the various municipalities. You and your Minolta digital do a very good job indeed. Thanks!
Etnedal does not get mention in any of the resources I have here in the states. I 'borrowed' eveything of interest about it on the German and Norsk Wiki pages, so can't add anything now.
Your suggestion on articles about WWII in Valdres is not anything I can help with immediately either. But the comment does point out the value of connecting the various articles by citing the Landscape they fall into, since manyof the histories follow the landscape designation rather than the current politicaql designation. I may pursue that next.

I live in Valdres and works in Oslo. I'll take a look, just tell me what you want.

Etnedal is a small place really. Of the more interesting things from Etnedal is an author which have written a lot of bucks about the weird people living there. I wonder if it would be possible to use something from him. He is deceased a long time ago.

When it comes to WWII I've have an idea which includes a friend which do know a lot about it.

Late Night Thoughts on Etnedal

The Etnedal coat of arms shows the old stone-arch bridge, Lundebru. Any chance you have a photo of it?
Your suggestion of the Etnadal author who has written about the weird people there is also interesting.
Best regards - Williamborg

Jupp. It's on my list.

The coat of arms from Sør-Aurdal is a combination of the archs on the stave churches and of a box with some bones of a saint. I belive it is Olav Trygvason but I'm not sure.

The coat of arms from Nordre Land is two fløtningshaker, a tool used during fløtning.. What is that in english.. :O

Agtfjott

"Cant Hooks" & "Peavies"

You ask, "The coat of arms from Nordre Land is two fløtningshaker, a tool used during fløtning. What is that in english?"
Not going to find 'fløtningshaker' in Haugen's Norwegian English Dictionary. But when I was a kid in Minnesota, we used "Cant Hooks" & "Peavies" for rolling timber & breaking up log jams (like hay saws, you don't see them except in museums anymore). The actual tool in the Nordre Land coat of arms looks somewhat different than either of these tools, but a "Cant Hook" is probably a reasonably accurate translation which older Americans will understand.

Fjord, Vatn or Sjø?

A picture of Randsfjorden might enhance Søndre Land or Gjøvik. Might you have one?
Is there some easy rule by which one can tell whether a lake should be designated a Fjord, Vatn or Sjø?
Best Williamborg
Gjøvik is located by Mjøsa, not by Randsfjorden.
I have pictures of both but on slides and I don't have a slidescanner for the moment.
In Søndre land you have some really puictoresque views from Hov i Land, the local administrative center.
Btw, try http://www.kulturnett.no/geografisknavigering/geografisknavigering_visning.jsp?fylke=T946673&kommune=T906621
this shows a map for the individual muncipalities with some additional information.
On Fjord, Vatn, Sjø. This is old words and have changed meaning over the years. Basically, a Fjord is a big lake which is narrow and long. Often located along the costline but not always, Randsfjorden is in the inland while Vestfjorden is outside Bodø and goes all the way out to Lofoten.
A lake called Vatn is small, imagine something where you stroll along and goes fishing. I slightly remember someone once said you walk around a Vatn in a couple of hours while you walk around a fjord in a couple of days while you grumble over how fast it would be to cross.
A Sjø is large but not narrow as a fjord. It is not often used as a name on a lake, most often as an reference to the ocean. Examples of lakes are Vannsjø ( Råde, Østfold)..
Then Mjøsa pops up quite often on big lakes. Mjøsa as the one big lake betveen Gjøvik-Lillehammer-Hamar is one but you have also others like Vangsmjøsa ( Vang, Oppland) and Møsvann Vinje, Telemark.

Fjord, Vatn, Sjø

  • Excellent explanation of Fjord, Vatn, Sjø. Hadn't realized mjøsa was a separate term in its own right, as opposed to a specific lake.
  • And my misplacing Gjøvik reaffrims the need to have my contributions carefully proofed.
  • Mange takk Williamborg
I don't know why mjøsa pops up in a number of places, I think you must get a proper explanation of that from a lingvisist Agtfjott 08:09, 24 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Kulturnett.no

I placed the Delete template because there was nothing there of import when you created it. Further, if there's a Deletion Request, it's not supposed to be removed until it's been checked over by an admin. That being said, I still see nothing of import there; it's relatively unclear as to what Kulturnett is, as well as what "Links to the mapping service in Wikipedia is by permission" means. Kulturnett could be a source for Wikipedia but anything would be required to be licensed under the GFDL as well as be translated into English. Is that possible?  RasputinAXP  talk * contribs 18:13, 23 August 2005 (UTC) reply

The page contains links to an article with an example, Vågå. I was writing the article when the marker was placed and I either had to revert my edit or re-add the marker on the new page, which I see no point in doing as there was no explanation why it was added in the first place.
I'm in contact with the bureau about using more info from them and I guess it will be clearer what kind of copyleft/-right they want to use. If I should guess it is more likely they use a creative commons than GFDL.
I made a note about this on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Norway so it is better to take furter discussion there.
Agtfjott 18:58, 23 August 2005 (UTC) reply

No Kulturnett.no

Unfortunately I seem to recall Kulturnett.no shows up only if you are a resident of Norway. It has been discussed several times on Norway List, and, if memory serves, other maps are preferred. Couldn’t get to it on either of the machines I tried today. Hope someone corrects me, but… Williamborg
I make a note about it and talk to them, it wasn't sometning my contact person was aware of. Wouldn't be the first place I run into this, stupid as it is. Several of the major norwegian isp's run from abroad so blocking on ip-addresses isn't very likely to work out anyhow. Agtfjott 08:06, 24 August 2005 (UTC) reply
We are talking about having a meeting discussing how they can contribute. If anyone have any ideas, please tell me! Agtfjott 08:16, 24 August 2005 (UTC) reply
Whatever you (or someone) did, Kulturnett.no comes through nicely now.
You might also suggest to Kulturnett.no that they encourage local municipalities to contribute photos of their regions to the Wikipedia Commons. It is amazing how much better any article is if someone has posted photographs or maps.

Museums

Various stuff

Bagn Bygdesamling

Have been in contact with Bagn Bygdesamling at earlyer occasions and they are willing to contribute if possible.

Hadeland Folkemuseum

One nice lady working at Hadeland Folkemuseum want to contribute if she gets time. I'll set up a basic page with a few photos.

Valdres Folkemuseum

Wasn't anyone off the staff at Valdres Folkemuseum when I visited but one of the guides contributed an info booklet about the museum.

The stave churches

Added a couple of missing churches. Added also some text but it is better to write something a bit more consistent than what it would be as I shuttled back and forth adding missing pieces. I did not add anything if the original article would be radically changed in structure.

Added linking from the muncipalities to the churches. A bit confusing as some referer to the muncipality while other referers to local villages. One even used a muncipality which was merged.

The names are now according to what I belive is the correct local name. Hopefully this doesn't clash with some rules defined somewhere I don't know of. No articles are moved, it is only the leading in the article which is changed. Still the name from the link will be prominent so I don't think this leads to any confusion.

Agtfjott 16:32, 24 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Hello! The only reason that I changed the name in the text was to make it consistent with the article's title (and I changed the Norwegian name to lowercase because that's how it is in the Norwegian Wikipedia and in the external article). The articles should all be consistent, but I don't know know whether that should be the Norwegian or the English names. I suppose that, as this is the English Wikipedia, the English form should be preferred, especially as it's unlikely that one could argue that the Norwegian form is the more common among English-speakers. How many articles are there? -- Mel Etitis ( Μελ Ετητης) 08:45, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply
It's about 30 articles, depending on wetter I want to write something about churches which is more or less rebuilt or not. They are all listed in stave churches. Even Riksantikvaren, the authority in Norway thats in charge messes with the names. Flesberg Stavkirke uses one form in the header of the document and an other within the body text. I don't thing it matters to much.
It is a description of the church, the same time it is also a name of the church. Probably we can go for whatever we choose. Agtfjott 08:52, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply
Not sure I understand the naming issue here, but...
We do have a naming convention for Norwegian places names in the English Wiki. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Norway which states: "For administrative units and geographical entities, the official Norwegian name [1] is used for the article, with redirects for English names when known. There is no reason to invent new English names."
As to "it's unlikely that one could argue that the Norwegian form is the more common among English-speakers." Actually, I cna make a rather compelling argument to that effect. If one checks guide books written in English these days, they use the Norwegian spellings (even the modern Baedeker's has moved to this convention although historically it Anglicized). Its only the older material that has Anglicized the names, and you can find 3-4 variations of a particular place name in older English literature (One of my favorite examples is Vågå , which appears as Vaaga, Vaagaa, Vaage, Waaga, & Vaga in various older English books. ). So this provides a pretty good reason to stick with the Norwegian spelling unless there is a compelling English usage. Williamborg 14:12, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply

If all the articles are the same length as the Grip one, would it makes sense to have one article on Norwegian stave churches, and merge all the stub-articles on individual churches? -- Mel Etitis ( Μελ Ετητης) 08:59, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply

I belive an article as short as Grip stave church isn't very usefull. An example of what I want to do is something like Reinli stave church. It is part of a collection of articles related to muncipalities in Valdres. My idea was to start filling in some information and pictures, especially the churches, museums and archeological sites. Perhaps also a bit about nature. Agtfjott 09:10, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply

The sources under external links should be of pretty good quality. Insted of linking to articles, it seems like the url's was very fragile, I linked to the site as such. This means it is necessary to navigate a bit to find the english page (top-right corner) and then click on the actual church. It seems so obious I prefered this to a very-very long and potential fragile url. Agtfjott 18:47, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Reinli stave church is attractive, and if all the article were like that, it would certainly be better to have them separate rather than merged. -- Mel Etitis ( Μελ Ετητης) 20:39, 25 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Arsoning and vandalism of Churches in Norway

Arsoning and vandalism of Churches in Norway become a serious problem in the last years of 20th century. After nearly a millenia paganism grows in some closed groups, most notably around some music groups, and one of the most prominent ones are fronted by Varg Vikernes.

Many of the churches in Norway now has automatic fire extinguishers and survailance systems, some even have regular guards on patrol.

Arsoning by year

The lists are incomplete.

1992

  • Røa church in Oslo; attemted arsoning during easter
  • May, Storetveit church in Bergen, attempted arsoning in the church tower, Varg Vikernes, later tried and convicted for the arsoning, two other youths at trial and awaits sentences
  • June 5, Fantoft stave church outside Bergen burns to the ground. The private owned church had no automatic fire extinguisher or survailance system. The fire ignites a debat in the newspapers about security measures for the remaining churches. Later Varg Vikernes is put at trial and convicted by the judges but dismissed by the jurors, – the judges refuses to do anything about it as Vikernes already has maximum sentence in Norway
  • August 1, Revheim church in Stavanger is totally destroyed by arsoning after two young boys break in and makes a camp fire on the altar. The boys are 15 and 17 years old and the reason behind is assumed to be satanism. Later a third boy is also conected to the arsoning.
  • August 23, Holmenkollen chapel in Oslo burns to the ground. Bård "Faust" Eithun, Euronymous, and Varg Vikernes piled up bibles and hymnals, poured gasoline on them, and lit them.
  • September 13, Skjold church in Vindafjord in Ryfylke burns to the ground. The police conclusion is that the fire starts after a lightning strike. Later the conclusion is revoked and Varg Vikernes is put at trial and convicted of arsoning, together with a 19 years old man from Nesodden which gets a verdict of 16 months imprisonment
  • September, Ormøya church in Oslo, attempted arsoning, some damages, a youth put on trial
  • September/October, Chapel at Kolbotn sanctuary in Oppegård, attempted arsoning, same youth as in the Ormøya case
  • October 3, Hauketo and Prinsdal church, arsoning and partially destroyed, the same youth as in the Ormøya case
  • December 24, Åsane church outside Bergen is totally destroyed by fire. The police indicates the fire could be arsonning. Later two men, one is Varg Vikernes, is put at trial and convicted of arsoning
  • December 25, The Methodistchurch in Sarpsborg burns. During fire extingushing a fireman dies.

It is estimated that the net loss in the fires exceeds NOK80 million

1993

  • January 15, The goverment "vedtar å bevilge" NOK7 million in 1993 to immidiate safty measures. This is the beginning a program over several years also covering chuches from the medieval period and wooden churches form the 17th century and 18th century

Urnes Stave Church

Hi Agtfjott. I certainly agree that the picture should be included. The problem was that the article looked very cramped and, dare I say, unprofessional. I am all for re-including the drawing when the article grows a little larger (I have been meaning to translate your and Nina's new text from no:, but I haven't had a lot of free time this past week). I removed the drawing as it closely resembles the photograph, which I tend to prefer as a leading image as it better depicts the church's size and place to those who have not visited it. Thanks for inviting a copyedit — Williamborg 03:15, 22 March 2006 (UTC) reply

I found a question on User talk:Wiglafs discussion page about this church, added by you. The correct reading of "and it is often classified as a stave church" is more like "and the palisade walls are often classified as remnants of a stave church". This to is wrong if you use a Norwegian description of a stave church. It is although right if you use a Swedish definition of a stave church.

The background is, in Sweden a stave church is a church with standing planks in the wall while in Norway a stave church is specific construction with standing staves (pillars) on top of a wooden frame. Sometimes scholars in Sweden uses risverkskyrka to avoid the confusion. In all there are three different constructions, probably with a lot of transitional forms. A palisade construction, a construction with earth bound posts and a construction with posts on top of a wooden frame. To make the situation even more unclear a palisade construction can be partly lifted from the ground and set on a wooden frame.

Especially churches with earth bound posts can be easily spotted during an archaeological survey and a palisade construction were all or parts of the walls are set in gravel. Such buildings are detected all over Europe, and according to Leif Anker "Europe are covered in post holes from Italy to Norway". As he says, "it is more interesting to investigate why the stave churches survived in Norway then to try to see them as a Norwegian-only phenomenon".

John Erling Blad ( no) 10:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC) reply

Excellent discussion; clarifies the confusion quite nicely. Might I suggest it be added to the Greensted Church and stave church pages? Williamborg 15:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC) reply

Lister over gårder i Oppland

Articles which parallel a Norwegian Wikipeda series on Lists of farms in Oppland have been proposed for deletion no: Kategori:Lister over gårder i Oppland. Tusen takk - Williamborg 9. mai 2006 kl.02:54 (UTC)

I very much appreciated your thoughtful comments on Lister over gårder i Oppland. By themselves, your comment served to help formulate what is unique about Norwegian farms—and they are significantly diferent from farms in the USA. Since the articles survived, albeit barely, they will be strengthened by using your information in the articles, as will a number of the thoughts expressed by others.
It has always been a pleasure working with you. Your constructive approach makes it so.
Mange takk - Williamborg 01:55, 15 May 2006 (UTC) reply
I sort of expected the articles to be deleted. Interesting. I think the arguments holds for most farms but I'm not sure. Another thing is that «gardsnummer» not always depicting the original farm. perhaps it would be better to make a parallell project for genealogy and the history of the farms. That way the articles could be bigger yet without interfering with Wikipedias rules about vanity. — John Erling Blad ( no) 03:09, 16 May 2006 (UTC) reply

"So called biography"?

Dear John, in this edit you removed quote "slander from a so called biography". This "so called biography" is the largest biographical project in recent norwegian literature, published on a well respected publishing house, and with equally respected sponsors. Furthermore, it is (AFAIK) written in agreement with the royal houses of Norway, Denmark and England. It is fair reason to doubt wheter this bit of information should be in an article about Guy_Francis_Laking, but there is no reason to discredit the biography, the author, or to descibe his open hypothesis as "slander".

  • March, Methodist church in Hammerfest; a youth confessed he had put a boy scout flag on fire, the altar piece, (prekestol) and a piano was destroyed in the fire

Hi John. I am a little rushed at the moment (I am preparing for a seminar I have tomorrow), but I will give the article's language a quick going over.

If you have an opinion for or against deletion, I’d appreciate your commentary on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lists of farms in Oppland. You’re welcome either in favor or against deletion.
