Oh, I'm sorry to hear that you've been called away; you've done so much good for the encyclopedia, and you've been a good wiki-friend. I really hope you'll be able to get things straightened out, and come back next summer. In the meantime, I'll continue to help with Wikipedia:WikiProject American Old West as much as I can on Sundays and Wednesdays, hopefully sometimes on Saturdays as well. I'm sure that it's going to flourish, very soon!

Hello! I have just added a new feature to MessageDeliveryBot. It is now possible to have the message delivered on behalf of a WikiProject instead of a specific user. The user who requested the delivery will still be visible in a comment, as well as in the welcome message given to a user if the bot is creating his talk page, however, the bot's edit summary and signature will use the WikiProjects name. To use this new feature, fill in the optional 'WikiProject Name' field when making a request (leave out the Wikipedia: namespace prefix). If this field is left blank, then your username will be used to sign requests, as the bot previously did. Happy editing!

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
Backlog Elimination Drive!
![]() Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36. Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated. Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies. Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on. This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa ( Talk), S Masters ( talk), HELLKNOWZ ▎ TALK, and The Raptor Let's talk. |

I'm afraid it's more complicated than that. The museum got the image from somewhere. That somewhere is probably the original source. Only by knowing what that original source is can you be sure that the museum has not violated copyright by publishing the image on the web. The original might actually belong to the museum, and it might hold the copyright and might be willing to publish the image under a public-domain or other free license. Or the image might have been published somewhere else and might be old enough (published before 1923 in the U.S.) that it could be copied and published freely under a public-domain license. But just because something is published on the web does not make it freely available to re-publish in Wikipedia articles or to assign a public-domain license to it. Please see WP:IUP for details. Hope this helps. Finetooth ( talk) 02:02, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that you removed the WikiProject American Old West template from several film articles' talk pages. Are you doing this for all films with the American Old West as the setting? If so, would the films not be cultural representations of the Wild West? A film like The Searchers (film) seems like it should fall under the WikiProject. The WikiProject's own page even says, "Movies or television programs related to the American Old West." Erik ( talk | contribs) 21:56, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

WP:AN/I can be a very difficult place, and it is, in my opinion, helpful to stay on target. If you are telling people essentially they shouldn't be posting there, try to make sure your own knowledge is accurate by simply reading the background first. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
Backlog Elimination Drive!
The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue. Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page. Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Awards and barnstars A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page. Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive! |
The article is good and well written. One issue I believe that could come up is length. It has been trimmed down, however, the Civil War section may have to have its own article page. My goal is to have the main USG as a Featured Article as well as GA. I believe the world tour section could be a whole separate article. An abbreviated summary of his Civil War record would have to be written and the Civil War section in the article now could be its own separate section. I believe Grant could also have a separate article on the Mexican American War. Grant would have his own article; his presidency; presidential scandals; Mexican American War service; and World Tour. Another article that could stem from USG is his Memoirs. As far as the USG article I believe another attempt at good article should be made. Cmguy777 ( talk) 23:34, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Utahraptor, just wanted to drop by to tell you that i enjoyed reading your research article (subpage). I did come accross this on your page which you havent really developed yet but would be very very interesting; How does the rate of vandalism vary throughout the day? Theres a geographic element to this I think which you might want to consider if you dive deeper with this question. Being in the europe right now I see high levels of vandalisim from european IPs in the morning (night time in North america). And while i was in North America a few years ago the same thing, high levels of vandalisim from North american Ips. So it might be interesting to categorise the origin of the vandalism attempt with the time observed to see if this truly is a pattern (if possible, though with accounts that cant be done). That might help answer the question on the rate of vandalism throughout the day. Anyway, very nice addition with keeping notes keep at it :), happy editing Ottawa4ever ( talk) 15:57, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. Thank you very much for the welcome. Could you please help me with an argument I am in at Brisbane City Bulls? An administrator is bullying me, undoing all of my edits. Hi. Feel free to disregard this given that I have opposed, but...
It seems as though one of the main things people are complaining about is lack of judgement/lack of clue. One of the key skills needed by admins is the ability to discern when a discussion or argument is fundamentally over and act accordingly. For that reason, I suggest that you withdraw your RFA. Hi
Thanks for the comments ! Vandal fighting is something I haven't really gone in to in depth - apart from the odd weekly sojourn into the recent page watch, where it seems there are so many people watching that by the time I have looked in depth and replied (well given notice with Twinkle) someone has reverted them already with Huggle etc, and a few obvious ones from IPs on pages on my watch list. When I started again it seemed that there were plenty out there doing it for RfA purposes and many new editors seeming to concentrate on it I figured I would leave it till I had learnt a little more policy - still, I suppose the more the merrier lol.
Once again thanks for taking the time to review :¬) Chaosdruid ( talk) 05:53, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Backlog Elimination Drive!
![]()
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{ cleanup}}, {{ wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Utahraptor – after adding 3,600 bytes and 13 new sources/references, I have completed both tasks as put forth in your reward board challenge to drum up collaboration on Silver Reef, Utah. I only had a few missteps (which you gallantly fixed). It was (and is) a very interesting bit of Utah history to engross myself in for a while. NielsenGW ( talk) 15:23, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Hello The Utahraptor. Thanks for your efforts at copyediting the article. There are three points I'd like to discuss with you:
What I mean is quite simply that these grammatical and syntactical peculiarities occurred often with such magical amulets.
Actually, there is a causal relationship between the two sentences. The first gives the conclusion and the second provides the reason why. Perhaps we should rather use "since" than "for"?
Only a minor point, but I'd like to keep the bold notes, at least one of them, to give the reader a better idea to read the lamella, since the idea that darker areas correlate with more elevated regions is counterintuitive.

Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. I copy-edited an article and removed the template. Want to make sure the guild, the campaign, and I get credit. Honest, there is a huge block of text and many different pages, when one comes to the GoC page, and it's darned hard to figure out the basics, like how to "officially" take stuff out of the queue. TCO ( talk) 00:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm stupid or the directions are hard. Probably both. ;) Just added myself to the list of participants in the drive (as opposed to Guild) and added the total template thingie in. Now, will go off and figure out how to get credit for my baton.
P.s. Do you guys just fix commas and stuff or actually restructure articles that are messes?
TCO ( talk) 01:26, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
OK. I added my article into the total, with the wordcount and all. It is not showing me having done one article though. Why not? P.s. I just used MS Word to do the count. TCO ( talk) 02:13, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Heck, I'm practically up to speed now. Thought about manually adding them, but wasn't sure if it should update. Also wasn't sure if review had to happen first. Anyway, lost my ce virginity. TCO ( talk) 02:22, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats ![]()
Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks. Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed. Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January! I'm looking at it again now and fixing a few things. I used a script to replace the hyphens in page ranges and date ranges, and I corrected the publisher's name in a couple of the citations. Utah's Dixie History (citation 15) looks to me like a tourist or real-estate group and not a reliable source per WP:RS. Generally travel sites or other commercial sites (usually dot-coms) are not reliable for meeting WP:RS and therefore WP:V. Some dot-coms are OK, and some may be reliable for some kinds of information but not others. It's always best to replace the weak (unvetted, unedited, unsigned) sources with strong ones if you can possibly find them. Dixie History is one I'd advise finding a substitute for. Woodworkers Auction (citation 16) is another; it looks to me like a personal web site. Utah Travel Center (citation 17) is another. The Gary B. Speck source (citation 19) looks like another personal web site. Utah.com, another travel site (citation 30) is another. You could just delete citation 30 since the claims are supported by two other citations, and they are not controversial claims. Citation 4 is to a real-estate site, not a reliable source. Please read WP:RS again and begin making a distinction between "published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy" and those, like blogs, self-published material, and many commercial sites, that are not likely to have professional fact-checkers and editors examining their claims for accuracy. Finetooth ( talk) 02:54, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
I think you should see the message where the editors seem to WP:OWN the article and refuse any work thereof. Im trying to discuss with them however if they abjectly refuse i will move on the article and other options thereof.
Now you owe me a favour! As my return favour, I ask that you do a copy edit on one of the articles from the Requests Page. OK? Thanks.-- Diannaa ( Talk) 04:23, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Utahraptor! I noticed your activity as a Good Article reviewer, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.-- Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation ( talk) 21:16, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

He will not listen to my arguments and instead quotes policies out of context. I know full well that it is unlawful to make more than three reverts in a 24-hour period - I was blocked for doing so when I edited as an IP. As you are an administrator, can you block Mkativerata? He clearly made four reverts in about 10 minutes. -- Broncos1988 ( talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:22, 28 October 2010 (UTC).

Cheers. → ROUX ₪ 15:39, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

What do you think? Gun Powder Ma ( talk) 23:38, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Thank you once again for participating, and see you at the finish line! – SMasters ( talk) 04:00, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
