I think it would be great if it was possible to filter the displayed events by type.
For example I'd like to filter the page so that it only displays events of "Health and environment" and "Science and technology".
Filters are already implemented for the Watchlist. The same, already coded software, could be used here after a few small changes.
What do you think of this?
Here I created a related software issue on phabricator. There should probably a separate task for this change though as that task is about filters for tables.
There are multiple ways this could implemented. I'd envision a number of tags on top of the page which can either get "whitelisted" or "blacklisted" – either showing all events except for the selected tags or no events except for the selected tags. Similar to the current Watchlist one could also save the current selection of displayed or excluded tags as a default filter or quickly activatable filter (i.e. a button or dropdown). This could also be used by readers not logged in while saving the filter would require creating an account.
(And both of these changes together would, in turn, allow for:
If you think that such filtering would be useful what would you suggest needs to be done to get it implemented (further steps)?

I just want to know if there has been a consensus for, or if there already exists some format to the order of elections in the sidebar. More specifically, if there are multiple elections scheduled to take place on the same calendar day how should the elections in question be ordered. I thought it was to be alphabetical, but there has been edits made by others to order it based on the time zones of the locations where the elections are to take place. I figured that an alphabetical order was the most neutral ordering, and I find that ordering by other methods seem more finicky than needed. If time zones are to be factored in, do you account for the literal hours that polls open/close for an election or just whenever the calendar day starts for the particular place? What if an election takes place in a location that covers multiple time zones? Unless someone can point me to an already existing convention in place, why not just keep it simple and order alphabetically from now on? - boldblazer ( talk) 07:06, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I strongly recommend putting Belarussian protests back on the front page, as the situation is ongoing and actually escalating each day. This is an extremely polarizing issue affecting millions of Belarussian citizens, the outcome of which will have global ramifications as it will set a precedent in neighbouring Russia and in dictatorships elsewhere. It is not advised to allow this to fade into obscurity (as happened to all previous Belarussian protests over the years) and should instead remain at the forefront of collective western consciousness. 2A02:8084:983C:A380:C433:D3E1:FA2E:607E ( talk) 18:25, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

I created Template:Current events portal for an embeddable, collapsed panel of the Current events that could be added to articles like 2020, which would make each page more useful and give the Portal:Current events a higher visibility. The existing portal templates are not visible on mobile at all with only a few rarely-used exceptions which can't be aligned to the right of a page as would be best for the article 2020.
Templates still can't be uncollapsed on mobile – this would require MediaWiki software changes to modernize the software to fully support mobile browsers. Under the Template documentation I have added the template as it was/is supposed to look like, which works properly on desktop.
I think the template is still useful as:
As a sidenote the template was intended to only embed the fairly short "Ongoing events" part of the Portal:Current events and not the entire panel but this doesn't seem to be possible as of right now without a change to the portal (but maybe it'll be possible later). This would be for a later discussion / a separate phabricator issue.
The template is currently being discussed for deletion here. Please comment there, not here.

Hello. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events format is currently being updated. However, one new change is a section for "Current discussions". The Portal:Current events has debates all the time to determine if things are notable for the portal (international news) or if they are better suited for a place like 2020 in the United States. In the past, small 'edit wars' have taken place between editors over topics. This new section on the WikiProject is a new place where editors can discuss between each other and have an easy access to 'outside opinion' from other participates. Members in the Current Event WikiProject are welcome to invite other editors that have disagreements to start the discussion on the WikiProject. (Unlike RFC's, discussions about topics would be about 1 week or whenever the topic is no longer relevant from the WikiProject).
Thank you for reading. ( Current Event WikiProject Coordinator) Elijahandskip ( talk) 19:27, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Requesting some kind of resolution on this, as user Alsoriano97 is apparently personally trying to decide what represents "relevant" based on their own interests. User has already violated 3RR rule. As a secondary question, what is considered "relevant" for Science and Technology? Does it need to be the Wright Brothers demonstrating flying before it can be posted here?
As a third general question, are there any guides for what is "relevant" at all for Portal Current Events? How many news sites does it need to be covered by? How much does it need to affect the Earth?

The actual story is that a lab worker at a Merck facility found 15 "questionable vials" labeled "smallpox" and "vaccinia" while cleaning out a freezer. I'm unfamiliar with this portal, and need some advice. I got here from the links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events because I had been looking at adding a {{ WikiProject Current events}} project banner to the article Talk:Reconquête (political party). Reconquête is a brand new political party launched in France on 5 December 2021, by far-right journalist, pundit, and now, politician Eric Zemmour. Opinion polling for Zemmour for President experienced a meteoric rise in the last weeks and months, and this was before he was a candidate, or had a party. He has now declared his candidacy, and created a new party, Reconquête, less than a month ago.
This is all still very fresh, with things happening on a daily and weekly basis. In particular, editors here (many from France) are making edits to the Reconquête (political party) page which (at this moment) are unsubstantiated, such as that it is a far-right political party, or that it is Islamophobic. It might be, but it is so new, that there isn't information about this yet, and good-faith editors are just transferring over well-established opinions about Zemmour (like the fact that he is far-right, and Islamophobic) to the party article without proper sourcing. Probably they are right, but it's WP:CRYSTAL at best, as there are no sources for this (yet).
The new party isn't strictly about "one event" in that sense, but it seems to me it belongs in current events, to the extent that we are witnessing the birth and rapid evolution of a new political party in France right now, one that has a chance to be among the top two parties in the next presidential election. It seems to me that this party article needs more eyeballs on it by experienced users to keep it on track, and to watch for excesses by enthusiastic editors who are eager to stuff it with information about Zemmour, before there really is much reliable information out there about the party.
Anyway, I'm not sure what the window for a "current event" is, with respect to this Portal, or how to add one, so any advice would be appreciated. In the meantime, I've gone ahead and added WP:WikiProject Current events to the article Talk page; if that seems wrong, please feel free to revert it. I was looking at the list of events for today and saw "The US Department of Defense says that Russia is losing momentum in its attack on Ukraine." I checked the source but the CNN website is structured in a way that makes finding the exact place that this claim comes from a pain. Is there a better source/better way to document sources from this website? There are enormous mistakes in this document. First off, Russia was pushed to a corner with missiles at its head. Second off, the U.S.A. caused this with their NATO program. Third off, the U.S.A. is the real enemy declining Russia's request to join NATO, NATO was actually formed formally against USSR, now Russia. Player34r ( talk) 12:41, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

This is a ridiculous answer, surely an invasion by a major European power shouldn't be excluded from an ongoing section due to template issues. This feels very much like evading the question as to why this is not on the ongoing section. From Wikipedia "Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. Stories of only regional or topical interest belong in their appropriate sub-pages, if any." I have reverted Watercheetah99 three times already and I don't wish to enter an edit-war. What do other editors think about this? In addition to my earlier argument, in general, I don't believe that any 'minor' regional elections from any country (apart from a few exceptions) should be covered on the Current Events page. I'm asking other editors to contribute their thoughts to this discussion so as to remove any ambiguity there may be. Regards, MattSucci ( talk) 05:30, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
"Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. Stories of only regional or topical interest belong in their appropriate sub-pages, if any."And, yes – some of these are regional-level elections currently being included in Current Events (though, frankly, inconsistently) – the question is not whether they "have been": it's whether they "should be". -- IJBall ( contribs • talk) 06:04, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
I recently added a entry to the Current Events Portal relating to the Maiden flight of Greater Bay Airlines, which was reverted. I would like to seek the opinions of other editors relating to this entry.
"Hong Kong-based airline Greater Bay Airlines completes its maiden flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok. The airline has been granted licenses to operate 104 routes across the Greater China and Asia Pacific regions."
General guidance from Wikipedia states that "Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. Stories of only regional or topical interest belong in their appropriate sub-pages, if any."
While a maiden flight of a new airline is usually only regionally notable, I believe that in this case, this airline is of special notability. My rationale for this is as follows.
Carter00000 ( talk) 09:14, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
I made the original revert of Carter00000's edit and I still argue that it is regional and fairly insignificant, but due to the fact that recently a large amount of 'regional' and 'insignificant' edits have been made, re-adding this isn't going to detract from the article in general. I believe that a more intense discussion should take place as to what is considered a current event of international interest, but it would seem that not many editors are interested enough to contribute their opinions. I presume, one can add an entry into "September 1, 2022 (Thursday)" titled
2022 Oder environmental disaster and describe the update in short since that news was so major to be put into the "Topics in the news" area, so significant updates will be noteworthy news every time, am I correct on that?

Taliban males raping a homosexual male would imply male-male sexual interaction. Therefore, the Taliban soldiers must then have had enough arousal to have sex with a male, even if it was violent. And this is public enough knowledge its in news reports? They even let the homosexual male leave so the character could report on what would be death sentence shame? I think my issue is it feels like a troll story designed to stir up shit and guilt about leaving Afghanistan. An anonymous IP added the claim that "vials containing the smallpox virus" had been discovered in Pennsylvania. This claim stayed on the page for 8 hours! The actual story is that a lab worker at a Merck facility found 15 "questionable vials" labeled "smallpox" and "vaccinia" while cleaning out a freezer. As the smallpox vaccine is made from a virus called vaccinia, the most probable explanation is that the vials contained smallpox vaccine, not smallpox. Regardless, it is irresponsible for us to publish such conspiracy-inducing headlines without solid sources to back them up. If no one is checking the statements on this page for accuracy, especially surprising or outlandish ones, we should not be allowing anonymous IPs to edit it.
At this point, Portal:Current events/April 1994 has been deleted. If that has been deleted, then we might as well delete the pages for all the other months in 1994 too. So, we need an RfC.
Which year (from 1994 to 2006) should be the cut-off point for the monthly subpages? The current status quo is 1994. If there is consensus not to have monthly subpages for any month in a particular year yyyy or earlier, then all the following pages and their talk pages should be deleted:
This only affects the Portal:Current events subpages. Users may still recreate an article at Month Year with detailed references that follows the format used at December 1993 and earlier months. These mainspace pages do not follow the same format as the Portal:Current events subpages.
