I thought I would start traversing Category:Jews to locate women who can be added to Category:Jewish women (to make it easier to add them to this project). The first article I stumbled on was Emily Bazelon. After I added her to the category, it occured to me to check to see if she is identified as Jewish in the text of the article, and to my surprise she was not. Just wondering... It's not cited in the WP article, but this interview with the Arizona Jewish Post [1] makes clear Bazelon is of Jewish descent and belongs to a Reform synagogue. This could be added to the article. Kschlot1 ( talk) 13:15, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

As yet, we don't have an assessment table. It's on my to-do list to add one and put it into the banner template, adapted from the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women's_History/Assessment#Quality_scale - I will try to get to it soon we won't have banner-tagged pages without ratings. - Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.
- Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy, [2] I am looking for women editors who might like to join.
- Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish.

Having worked for 2 years editing articles for Women In Red, a group of organizers have concluded that sourcing is one of the biggest hurdles in creating articles on women and non-binary genders. Though it is true that a lot of sourcing simply doesn’t exist, it is also true that there are sources, but we have no access to them. As these groups did not typically become subjects for academic study until the 1970s, many of the sources are not on line or are behind paywalls. Failure to include women and non-binary people in the encyclopedia presents a one-dimensional view of society and history. To address those issues, we are forming a new User Group aimed at referencing and support for like-minded groups and would appreciate your input or input from your supporters in our organizational process. Question about nationality and identity at Hannah Arendt
There is a perpetual disagreement happening at this article on how best to identify Hannah Arendt. The current version of the article refers to her as German, which in her writings she identified as. However, she was also Jewish and in her writings she also self-identifies as Jewish -- in fact, she states in one essay that if she has to be identified as one thing only, it would be Jewish, given the scope of her work. Further complicating things is her residence in the US for decades. I just reverted a convoluted phrasing borrowed from the German Wikipedia (although it wasn't accurately translated): "German and American Jewish". No consensus has ever been reached and I believe the article just defaults to German at this point. I cannot find any guidelines on the proper way to identify someone who is unambiguously Jewish but is also identified as a nationality. It appears that local article-based conventions apply, so there is little or no consistency. I have created an article for a subject listed by this project as in need of creation, C. Doris Hellman. However, although I can document that she was a long-term supporter of the Jewish Foundation for Education of Girls, that her husband was president of the Jewish Guild for the Blind, and that she is listed in the Encyclopedia of Jewish Women, I don't have a source explicitly saying she was Jewish, and so I have not put that into the article about her. I was wondering how do you define who is Jewish on Wikipedia since being Jewish seems to cross between religious and ethnic/cultural categories (i left the same post on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism). What would be sufficient sourcing? I have searched all the relevant help pages but cannot seem to find a definitive answer. Assigning religious identity to living people requires self-identification ( Wikipedia:BLPCAT) while deceased people may be identified without self-identification (e.g. "services were held at Temple xxxx"). Being Jewish as an ethnicity does not seem to require such a high hurdle ( Wikipedia:ETHNICRACECAT). I was told that in order to designate a person as Jewish I would need multiple irrevocable sources that specifically state that the reference is referring to ethnicity in order to include. As most citations do not specify whether the subject is Jewish by faith or descent, they would not be sufficient. For example, Edits to Maurice Kremer (1824–1907) have been removed since I do not have multiple sources and the one I do have does not specify whether it refers to religion or ethnicity.

- @ Patapsco913: I don't think this project is very active and it's been a while since your question, but in case it hasn't been answered then you are right, those restrictions you mention are far too high. I came here today to look at the talkpage banner in terms of importance assessment and some of that is relevant to your question: any living person who has self-identified as Jewish either culturally/religiously or ethnically, and any deceased person identified as Jewish, is included. The article is a higher level of importance if their Jewish identity holds some significance, but it does not have to be "key" to their notability - that would limit a Jewish identity to people like Anne Frank, and rabbis and theologians, which is backwards thinking since most Jewish people are those practicing under rabbis! For the example I came here looking at - Dianna Agron - we can see multiple sources confirming she is both ethnically and religiously Jewish, and there are sources on the relevance of this identity in terms of her career, but since her Wikipedia page was created back in 2006 before her religion was widely known, and her most famous role is a Christian, it's not the reason she is notable. By that measure, even Mary, mother of Jesus would not be allowed. So if you have sources making it explicit the person is Jewish, you can use it, just don't put it in the infobox unless there's a good reason. Kingsif ( talk) 11:06, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Scope of Project? - Should all articles on Template:Women in Judaism be linked to this WP Project?

Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to any and all women and women's works during the event period. Want to improve an article about a Bollywood actress? Go for it. A pioneering female scientist? Absolutely. An award-winning autobiography by a woman? Yes! Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent
Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{
WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{ WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{
WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. - Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.
- Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy, [2] I am looking for women editors who might like to join.
- Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish.

First, on June 5th, there will be a Women in Jewish History 2016 edit-a-thon, much like the one we held in 2014. Having worked for 2 years editing articles for Women In Red, a group of organizers have concluded that sourcing is one of the biggest hurdles in creating articles on women and non-binary genders. Though it is true that a lot of sourcing simply doesn’t exist, it is also true that there are sources, but we have no access to them. As these groups did not typically become subjects for academic study until the 1970s, many of the sources are not on line or are behind paywalls. Failure to include women and non-binary people in the encyclopedia presents a one-dimensional view of society and history. To address those issues, we are forming a new User Group aimed at referencing and support for like-minded groups and would appreciate your input or input from your supporters in our organizational process. Question about nationality and identity at Hannah Arendt
There is a perpetual disagreement happening at this article on how best to identify Hannah Arendt. The current version of the article refers to her as German, which in her writings she identified as. However, she was also Jewish and in her writings she also self-identifies as Jewish -- in fact, she states in one essay that if she has to be identified as one thing only, it would be Jewish, given the scope of her work. Further complicating things is her residence in the US for decades. I just reverted a convoluted phrasing borrowed from the German Wikipedia (although it wasn't accurately translated): "German and American Jewish". No consensus has ever been reached and I believe the article just defaults to German at this point. I cannot find any guidelines on the proper way to identify someone who is unambiguously Jewish but is also identified as a nationality. It appears that local article-based conventions apply, so there is little or no consistency. I have created an article for a subject listed by this project as in need of creation, C. Doris Hellman. However, although I can document that she was a long-term supporter of the Jewish Foundation for Education of Girls, that her husband was president of the Jewish Guild for the Blind, and that she is listed in the Encyclopedia of Jewish Women, I don't have a source explicitly saying she was Jewish, and so I have not put that into the article about her. I was wondering how do you define who is Jewish on Wikipedia since being Jewish seems to cross between religious and ethnic/cultural categories (i left the same post on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism). What would be sufficient sourcing? I have searched all the relevant help pages but cannot seem to find a definitive answer. Assigning religious identity to living people requires self-identification ( Wikipedia:BLPCAT) while deceased people may be identified without self-identification (e.g. "services were held at Temple xxxx"). Being Jewish as an ethnicity does not seem to require such a high hurdle ( Wikipedia:ETHNICRACECAT). I was told that in order to designate a person as Jewish I would need multiple irrevocable sources that specifically state that the reference is referring to ethnicity in order to include. As most citations do not specify whether the subject is Jewish by faith or descent, they would not be sufficient. For example, Edits to Maurice Kremer (1824–1907) have been removed since I do not have multiple sources and the one I do have does not specify whether it refers to religion or ethnicity.

For living people, I am told that I need to demonstrate a verified consensus of reliable sources that indicate that their being Jewish is key to their notability in addition to self-identification. see Bruce Berkowitz with three sources deemed insufficient

- @ Patapsco913: I don't think this project is very active and it's been a while since your question, but in case it hasn't been answered then you are right, those restrictions you mention are far too high. I came here today to look at the talkpage banner in terms of importance assessment and some of that is relevant to your question: any living person who has self-identified as Jewish either culturally/religiously or ethnically, and any deceased person identified as Jewish, is included. The article is a higher level of importance if their Jewish identity holds some significance, but it does not have to be "key" to their notability - that would limit a Jewish identity to people like Anne Frank, and rabbis and theologians, which is backwards thinking since most Jewish people are those practicing under rabbis! For the example I came here looking at - Dianna Agron - we can see multiple sources confirming she is both ethnically and religiously Jewish, and there are sources on the relevance of this identity in terms of her career, but since her Wikipedia page was created back in 2006 before her religion was widely known, and her most famous role is a Christian, it's not the reason she is notable. By that measure, even Mary, mother of Jesus would not be allowed. So if you have sources making it explicit the person is Jewish, you can use it, just don't put it in the infobox unless there's a good reason. Kingsif ( talk) 11:06, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Scope of Project? - Should all articles on Template:Women in Judaism be linked to this WP Project?
Hi All,
I've recently made Template:Women in Judaism as a navbox for general articles that were linked on the women in Judaism page (e.g. articles on Jewish women's history, religious roles, customs, etc.).
Currently, I have around 50 pages linked, and I thought to link the WP project on each of those pages. But I want to confirm that the scope of this project is meant to include those... Please advise!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2022, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event – Wildcard Edition! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to any and all women and women's works during the event period. Want to improve an article about a Bollywood actress? Go for it. A pioneering female scientist? Absolutely. An award-winning autobiography by a woman? Yes! GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to receive a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent
Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{
WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{ WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{
WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
