WP:NRHP Fall 2011 Photo Contest

If you like taking photos of historical places and buildings, you're in the right place! Photographers new to WP:NRHP are especially encouraged to participate. Challenge yourself and share your passion!

WP:NRHP is organizing this contest to run between 12:01 am (New York Time), Friday, October 21 and 11:59 pm (NYT), Sunday, December 4, 2011. Different editors or Wikipedia projects can sponsor their own photo challenges below. The only rules are that:

  1. Photos must be taken and uploaded during the given time period.
  2. The photos must be uploaded to Commons and include the category Category:NRHP Fall 2011 Photo Contest
  3. All registered users on Wikipedia may participate. If you are not registered, please click here.
  4. The sponsoring editor or project makes their own challenge, sets their own rules, and judges the results.
  5. The challenge must to related to photos of National Register of Historic Places sites. [1]
  6. Prizes (e.g. barnstars) must be offered.
  7. Participants in the contest must report their own results on this page in the form of photo thumbnails or diffs, which should show they they've met the conditions of the challenge.
  8. Judges must announce their decisions on this page before December 10, 2011. Note that judges may not need to check all the self-reported results on this page, but in some cases only the top 2 or 3 self-reported results.
  9. The decisions of the judges are final.

Details and definitions

  • County lists - All NRHP sites are listed by county or sometimes in subdivisions of counties, e.g. National Register of Historic Places listings in Washington County, Ohio, or National Register of Historic Places listings in Evanston, Illinois. All of these are considered to be "county lists" for the purposes of this contest. These lists should be easily accessible by checking the state lists, e.g. List of RHPs in TN, or by a link under "See also" in the main article on the county.
  • National Historic Landmarks are almost all also listed as NRHP sites. Lists of NHLs can be accessed via List of National Historic Landmarks.
  • Non-illustrated site - if the county list does not have a photo or other illustration of a site it is considered to be "non-illustrated."
  • If a site is already illustrated on a county list, and the challenge does not specify "non-illustrated site" then it is eligible if it is included in any Wikipedia article.
  • Address-restricted (AR) site - the NRHP lists some sites as "Address restricted," in order to protect archeological and other sensitive sites from looting. Unfortunately they have made some obvious mistakes on this designation, and have no method of updating this restriction. Therefore WP:NRHP accepts photos of these sites if they are publicly accesible and their location is well-known. If you are unsure whether this is the case, it is best not to photograph these sites. Unless otherwise stated, photos of AR sites may be included in the contest.
  • Diffs - Diffs show the result of your edit. To self-report that you've met the conditions of a challenge, go to your "My contributions" tab and click on "diff" next to the edit where you added photos to an article. Then copy the entire url and place it beneath the challenge you want to self-report on in single square brackets, e.g. [http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_South_Philadelphia&diff=prev&oldid=454315954] then add a very brief description and sign with ~~~~ and your self-report is done. See example below Challenge #1, or Help:diffs for more help on diffs.
  • Thumbnails - in some cases, all you need to do to self report is to include a photo within the <gallery></gallery> tags below the challenge.
  • Subjective judging - for some of the challenges, by their very nature, judging must be subjective and you may disagree with the result. Kudos to the judges for taking on this potentially controversial responsibility. Of course, if you really disagree with the result, you may award a barnstar to whomever you consider the winner, all by yourself!
  • Photos may be used to satisfy the conditions of multiple challenges.

Challenge #1 Most Sites added overall

Challenge #18 State traveler

In order to encourage NRHP photographic road trips, a barnstar will be awarded for the two photos, taken by the same photographer during the contest period, that are the greatest distance apart but within the same state. Please make sure you include the coordinates when uploading to Commons (use the {{Location|dd|mm|ss|N|dd|mm|ss|W}} template) You can copy the coords from the county lists.

Sponsor: Royalbroil ( talk)

To self-report your two most-distant photos, just include both photos in the gallery below, and include the distance calculated from Google Maps.

  • I come up with 577 miles using google maps for the Nebraska places, not 552, so User:Ammodramus gets the barnstar. Royal broil 05:03, 5 December 2011 (UTC) reply
    • After contemplation, I decided to give barnstars to both Ammodramus and Visitor7. Google gives different results and it is too inaccurate to be impartial. Both photographs put in yeoman's service and deserve the award. Royal broil 01:07, 6 December 2011 (UTC) reply
