What is Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnia and Herzegovina , is a country located in
Southeastern Europe . Bordered by
Croatia to the north, west and south,
Serbia to the east, and
Montenegro to the south, Bosnia and Herzegovina is
almost landlocked , except for 26 kilometres of the
Adriatic Sea coastline. First settled by
Illyrians then
Slavs later on, the area was under the
Ottoman Empire from 1463 to 1878 until it became
annexed by
Austria-Hungary . Following World War I, Bosnia and Herzegovina was incorporated into
Yugoslavia . During the
dissolution of Yugoslavia , a referendum for independence was declared and the
Bosnian war broke out. By the time peace was achieved in 1995 with the
Dayton Agreement , the country was split into two entities, the
Bosniak -
Croat
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the
Bosnian Serb -led
Republika Srpska .
