  • Disambiguate. I have begun a draft dab under the redirect. Seems like the best solution in situations like this when it's a very plausible search term and there are a handful of potential targets with none of them quite seeming best. Mdewman6 ( talk) 19:55, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Science fiction as thought experiment

The result of the discussion was keep. Powerful anchoring magic was invoked at the target to highlight the relevant text for only users of this redirect, which appears to have satisfied one of the two delete !voters, giving keep a comfortable majority. signed, Rosguill talk 21:52, 18 July 2023 (UTC) reply

While the target article about a novel discusses how this novel is a thought experiment, the concept represented by the redirect is much broader and should have its own article, or redirect to a broader treatment not limited to a single novel. Ping[ User:TompaDompa, User:Daranios, User:Jclemens in case one of them would have an idea for a better redirect target. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:41, 3 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Ps. That redirect also has a see also to another redirect, fiction as thought experiment, but that one seems a bit better, target-wise. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:43, 3 July 2023 (UTC) reply
  • No opinion but thanks for the ping. Jclemens ( talk) 07:03, 3 July 2023 (UTC) reply
  • Keep for now: Without having searched I agree that this concept should go way beyond the one novel where it is linked. On the other hand, the target describes exactly what I would have thought to find as the basis of an article on the concept. So it's better than nothing, and the redirect should be kept until someone finds the energy to expand it/spin it out into the article the concept deserves. Daranios ( talk) 18:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC) reply
  • Strongly weak keep. I like the idea of redirecting to a FA that touches on the topic. Alternatively, there is the most stifling sentence at Thought experiment#Uses, but a retarget limits this redirect's use as a category member. Red link potential very slim, but the search results aren't terrible so deletion wouldn't be all too terrible. J947 edits 05:18, 10 July 2023 (UTC) reply

  • Delete per nom. In addition to nominator's reasons, this isn't a section in the target, it's an {{anchor}} to a paragraph, so a reader is unlikely to even find it (and please, please don't bold it, which will make the reading experience worse for everyone). It's a worthwhile concept, and a decent paragraph even, but the current redirect isn't helping anyone. Dan Bloch ( talk) 21:05, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply
    • Fair to dispute anchors as confusing, but is The Left Hand of Darkness#Background a bad option for this redirect to target? Only three shortish paragraphs precede this topic. J947 edits 05:28, 13 July 2023 (UTC) reply
      • @ Danbloch and J947: I have changed the anchor in a way to highlight the sentences in question. It may be a little out of the ordinary to include a whole passage in the anchor, but I should make it much easier to find it for any reader using the redirect. At the same time it does not bold anything for any other reader. What does anyone think, about the use of the anchor and if this is the correct extent to highlight. Daranios ( talk) 14:32, 15 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Retarget to Shitao.

Previous RfDs for this redirect and similar redirects:

As part of a group effort to improve the Tai chi page, I have been researching this redirect with the benefit of more powerful publication search than may have been available when this was created nineteen years ago.

No valid reference has been published naming "tai chi" as "tao chi". The only valid references are publications about the Chinese painter Shitao, under his courtesy name Tao Chi (道濟; Wade-Giles: Tao-chi; Pinyin: Daoji). In the previous discussion of this redirect in 2012 it was mentioned more than once that this is a painter not a martial art, but that was apparently missed because several similar redirects were being discussed at the same time.

The current target is not only confusing to Wikipedia readers. Over the years this redirect has badly confused Google, Free Dictionary, and other sites, hilariously so. We should re-target this to Shitao ASAP. Jōkepedia ( talk) 02:25, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply

  • Retarget per nom. This is a possible typo for "Tai Chi", but the correct target should take precedence over an uncommon typo. — Mx. Granger ( talk · contribs) 13:22, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply
  • I think support retarget per nom. I think if done, Shitao should perhaps have a hatnote mention the new redirect targeting it with a link to Tai chi given the length of the redirect target, the fact that tao is associated with tai chi in general, and easy of typoing it ion qwerty keyboards. • No it won't be, in my opinion. That would be extremely undue, and only serve to clutter. J947 edits 12:57, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply
      • This would likely be a copy-paste search term, and "Aghan." can be the end of a sentence, hence it is likely that people searching for other topics will end up at Afghanistan due solely to highlighting and copy-pasting the last word in a sentence, and getting the wrong result -- 67.70.25.80 ( talk) 22:02, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply
        • I think helping the two people a year who might do so and even minorly inconveniencing the four million other readers of Afghanistan is quite plainly not worth it. J947 edits 22:20, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply
        • Those users reaching Afghanistan and instead needing to choose from options at Afghan (disambiguation) can reach that page via the existing hatnote to Afghanistan (disambiguation) where it is linked. Mdewman6 ( talk) 00:07, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply
          • I don't see what the problem is with a slightly larger hatnote:
{{Redirect-multi|2|Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan|Afghan.|the [[Taliban]]-governed state that existed from 1996 to 2001|Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (1996–2001)|other uses|Afghan (disambiguation)|and|Afghanistan (disambiguation)}}

-- 67.70.25.80 ( talk) 22:56, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply

  • Even excluding the harm done to readers who are not looking for a hatnote, this doesn't even help those looking at the hatnotes. Per WikiNav, ~9,400 readers visit Afghanistan (disambiguation) via Afghanistan each year. There are ~2 wanting to locate Afghan (disambiguation), which they can find at Afghanistan (disambiguation) easily enough and most would follow that link. How is it worth complicating the hatnote for all others who just want to go to Afghanistan (disambiguation)? J947 edits 05:37, 13 July 2023 (UTC) reply
Hatnotes hardly "do harm to readers". One line is not the end of the world. Edward-Woodrow :) [ talk 17:25, 13 July 2023 (UTC) reply
Neither is the exclusion of that line! The harm is extremely minimal for each reader – but I don't think it is realised how much that adds up over millions of views (a Big Number). J947 edits 07:43, 16 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Retarget to Afghan - does this one even really need explaining? estar8806 ( talk) 00:55, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply

  • Comment: The usage originated from this entry in encyclopedia Britannica which stated: " (born 1949, Logar province, Afghan.)" - The period "." indicates that it's a shortened form of the name "Afghanistan" WhisperToMe ( talk) 01:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC) reply

{{Redirect-multi|2|Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan|Afghan.|the [[Taliban]]-governed state that existed from 1996 to 2001|Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (1996–2001)|other uses|Afghan (disambiguation)|and|Afghanistan (disambiguation)}}
