Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC. Current events
Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests. Drive and blitz reports
March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news
Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020. Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from
our mailing list.

Hi there, Puddleglum2.0. I hope you are well and staying safe. I also hope that your remember me (you did me an awesome favor by fixing my wiki signature))) I'm still immensely grateful to you for that, that was sweet. If you don't mind, however, I would like to ask you to give me a hand with one more thing: fixing my archive in my talk page. No matter what bot (Miszabot, Bluebot or whatever) I place in my talk page, it just doesn't work. Finally, I placed one template that consists of an Archive page, but I couldn't make it work or link it properly. I'm completely screwed. Sorry to have disturbed you again. On 10 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Rodger Young, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite being shortsighted and nearly deaf, Rodger Young saved his platoon from an enemy ambush, for which he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rodger Young. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page ( here's how, Rodger Young), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thanks for your copy edit of Sheila Atim. I thought I would review this, to serve as an example of how you might provide reviews for others.
Following critically-acclaimed stage roles in the Donmar Warehouse's all-female Shakespeare trilogy in 2016 among others, Atim won the 2018 Laurence Olivier AwardYou added 'among others' which is one of those little wordings that draws my attention as something to avoid, especially in the lead. Articles are summaries, and the lead is a summary of that summary; nobody expects it to be exhaustive. It seems like extra words that don't serve any purpose, and break the flow when we really want the lead to be easily read at a glance. It's like an unnecessary 'however', the sort of thing you might use when you want a reader (or listener) to pause to absorb material. But I don't feel that's the right tone for encyclopedic writing.
She has composed songs for some productions, and, in 2019, she premiered her play Anguis at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.→ and premiered her play Anguis at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Simplify sentence structure (especially in lead).
the cancelled Game of Thrones successor series BloodmoonFirst caught my eye because the title Game of Thrones is missing italics. However, I'd consider removing this from the lead entirely; it's unclear if the pilot episode was produced or broadcast, so it doesn't seem that notable to her career.
to showcase clothes that were for "real women."Punctuation belongs outside the quotation ( MOS:LQ). The quote which follows this is multiple sentences, so it's okay for the terminal punctuation to be inside.
She got involved in a workshopgot → became, formal tone
The Times considered it to be and "intriguing look at female power … that marks [Atim] as a playwright to watch"and → an, and watch the ellipsis character … → ... ( MOS:ELLIPSIS). Sometimes editors will copy & paste quotes so it's a good idea to watch for odd characters, as well as punctuation at the beginning and end of quotes.
The Times later referred to her performance as "mesmerising."Even if abbreviating a title (The New York Times), it should still get italics: The Times later referred to her performance as "mesmerising".
in a film edition of Shakespeare's Twelfth NightShould this be 'adaptation'?
she is also a member of The Old Vic Theatre Trust Board of TrusteesI felt that 'Trust Board of Trustees" was a bit awkward and rephrased: she is also on the Board of Trustees of The Old Vic Theatre Trust.
Overall good, keep up the good work! And much thanks for volunteering to be a coordinator at GOCE! – Reidgreg ( talk) 21:29, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Now that I have a Wikimedia toolforge instance set up, this allows me to have some server-side features, so I've been thinking of some ideas. I was wondering what you thought about an extension to RedWarn that allowed CVA students who needed help on a difficult revert being able to click a button to immediately get help from their trainer, or another experienced user if online and opted in, when after you have made an action with RedWarn, it'll send a report to the student of what the more experienced user or trainer did, i.e. "user decided to rollback because (reason entered here). They then chose a Level 2 disruptive editing warning.", or if they did neither and a reason for it. I just think learning from experience, and being presented with an easy interpretation of the events that happened may be very useful for students or other inexperienced users who may just feel like they want some help.
Another tool that I was thinking of making is using the new RedWarn edit tag to help a CVA trainer review some rollbacks made by a student and to also review the actions they made there. What do you think? Ed6767 talk! 21:50, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

My date of birth was March 18, 2018, so I am not age 21, and so are you. Oh the template was extremely easy to make. You just had it ready to move it to template space, so I will just destroy the beer and uh send you this WIkiLove? {{ reply to| Can I Log In}}'s talk page! 05:53, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Hello there, I am not sure if you have seen my ping at my CVUA page. By the way, how do you apply text-colour to your signature instead of background colour? Thank you! The creeper2007 Talk! 17:21, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

That was a definite improvement - I was being sloppy in my terminology there, thank you! GirthSummit (blether) 07:55, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Hey, just dropping by to remind you that it's been a while since you last took a crack at the current NPPSCHOOL assignment. Copyvio is one of the last units and you've honestly been doing a great job overall, so I'd really hate to see you give up so close to the finish line. signed, Rosguill talk 06:27, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi Pudddleglum, in case you're not watching it, you have a question awaiting an answer at the GOCE election page. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:57, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
