DYK

Updated DYK query On 2 May, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article List of New England Patriots head coaches, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thought I should pass this on to you for rewriting the lead. Thanks again. Milk’s Favorite Cookie (Talk) 20:51, 2 May 2008 (UTC) reply

User:Indecisean

I dont understand the removal of this, if it isn't vandalism then can you explain what to do? It seems to me this is an Wikipedia:Ownership of articles issue. Minor edits and removing of unsourced material from an bio article shouldn't be that controversial. How can i improve this article if good edits are being reverted with accusations of bad faith, personal attacks and refusal to discuss the changes on the talk page? I'd appreciate any help with this you can give, in particular to review my edits (lists on the talk page Talk:Chantal_Claret#Changes_-_discuss_here, which i believe are good edits and not that controversial and let me now if they are correct and possibly act as a third opinion --neonwhite user page talk 03:24, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

His edits do not qualify as simple vandalism, and as such WP:AIV is NOT the correct place to report them. Instead, try to go through dispute resolution instead. -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 03:27, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
It just seems a little pointless to, say, do an rfc or request mediation for such minor edits. I fear a lack of interest. I'm happy to involve other editors but feel they will only look to the same policies i am and end up back where it started but i'll try asking for a third opinion. --neonwhite user page talk 04:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

WP:AIV

You just removed my report of a user who has been warring with me and two other users for many hours now. Rather than just remove things, why not read the compelling evidence at the 3RR report page and do something about this user as no other admin seems to be bothering. Thank very very very very much. Joshii chat 05:30, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

WP:AIV has clear guidelines for what is reported there. It isn't a place to go hunting for admins to come to your aid. His actions, while disruptive, aren't vandalism. Whether he may or may not be blocked for them; I will not comment on. But AIV is for dealing with vandalism, not edit warring. -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 05:33, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
So are you not an admin? It's just on your userpage it says you are? Are admins not supposed to help people? It would be a real help if you would go over to WP:3RR and help me with the problems I am having with a user. If there are admins online then why are none of them bothering to help?? What is the point in admins??? Joshii chat 05:35, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
I am an admin. I was just telling you that there are proper places to take your issues. AIV is not for calling admins to your help randomly. It has a specific purpose. -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 05:37, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
I'm not saying it doesn't, I know what AIV is supposed to be for but you must understand how frustrating it is when there are obviously admins online yet none of them even bother to check the 3RR page. I even added an admin backlog tag to the page to see if anybody would help but nobody has. So are you not allowed to process reports on 3RR? Joshii chat 05:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
You seem to be confusing the concept of "allowed" with the concept of "interested". -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 05:41, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply
It would take you all of 2 minutes to click a couple of buttons and shut him up. You really think I am interested in reverting edits non-stop? No but I don't want the article to be destroyed by spam. Please spare a minute of your time and I will be able to rest! Joshii chat 05:45, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Cheers! Joshii chat 05:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

happy now? Next time, have a little patience. Admins are no less volunteers than you. Misusing AIV is not the way to get things done. In the future, just let it go. These things all eventually get taken care of. Just because it doesn't happen at your timescale does not mean that no one cares. Well, I don't care, but at least now you'll stop bugging me... -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 05:54, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

← Admins are here to help, but they're not slaves, Joshii. You refused to wait for an admin to weigh in on the 3RR report, added a new report in an inappropriate venue, and when this was pointed out to you, you responded as if Jayron was ignoring his adminly responsibility to fix this. Next time, try acknowledging your error, and then asking nicely for assistance. Equazcion / C 06:05, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

It was possibly the most unhelpful thing I have ever seen on WP:EAR. The bot didn't even do the damage on the quoted article. -- EhsanQ ( talk) 04:17, 11 May 2008 (UTC) reply
I've actually run through most of his fall 2002 edits. Amazing editor but bots don't edit mistakes. It really is wrong to give editors wrong ideas about Wikipedia. The editor was correct that a lot of those entries hadn't been reformatted even if Ram-Man was doing repetitive job very quickly in days before certainly I (you?) knew before Wikipedia existed. Simple answers are the best, don't blame it on the dog and don't tell editors to sort out Wikipedia themselves if they have a problem. That does suck. -- EhsanQ ( talk) 05:23, 11 May 2008 (UTC) reply

I hold no opinion on the matter. As I am acting as an administrator in this issue, I take no sides; I only act to stop the disruption to the encyclopedia. Your recent block

Specifically, your decline of the unblock, is very inappropriate. Not only did you decline an unblock to a block you made, your block reason is fallacious — the edit was sourced, to Reuters no less. If Reuters is not a reliable source, then please tell me what is. Anyway, please reconsider your actions here. seresin ( ¡? ) 02:06, 12 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Having read the above, I'm unblocking. The edit was eventually sourced (and I think the information's relevant to the subject), this user was proceeding on good-faith grounds after discussing it with Elipongo here, and had been trying to discuss it with CanadianLinuxUser when he was blocked.

I'm not accusing you of bad-faith here ... this took a little time to investigate, and admittedly this user had a couple of civility problems earlier in the day. But he was trying to discuss things and heed warnings, and was making progress until the block. Daniel Case ( talk) 02:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC) reply

I've done it. This is maybe the third or fourth time in almost a year as an admin I've actually granted another user's unblock (as opposed to, say, unblocking someone I might have mistakenly blocked). So believe me, I don't do this much. Daniel Case ( talk) 02:53, 12 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Sorry, perhaps I misunderstood this message:

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it. If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process. You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there. Thank you. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 12:49, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi. I just noticed that one of the photos that the person uploaded I have seen somewhere else before and checked to see if there were any more problematic images. I asked what to do here [4] and just followed instructions after presenting evidence. I have had no malice towards the person who did them, but there is something fundamentally wrong about taking images and passing them off as their own. Especially the most blatant one of a photo of New York in the 1970s which they claimed was self-made, but they on their user page claim to be a "20 something photgrapher" - so unless they have a time machine, they could not have taken a photo of New York City then. The evidence was a pattern of behaviour, something that hopefully will change in future. I had no malice or no desire to have anyone banned, just wanted to make things right. I did not take unilateral action, I asked what was the proper thing to do after finding a problem. Die Profis - Die nächste Generation ( talk) 03:05, 19 May 2008 (UTC) reply

So he responds by adding a note to one of the AfDs [8]. I'm tired of dealing with him all together, but he just won't go away. Its getting hard to remember I'm supposed to be the adult and should just ignore his rantings. *argh* Any other ways to disengage? I'm trying to avoid responding to him in the open AfDs, but that just goaded him to the conversation above.  :( -- AnmaFinotera ( talk · contribs) 16:05, 21 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Opinion on User:Torratte

As you have dealt with this user before i wondered if you could give your opinion on two accounts i suspect of being sockpuppets, based on the edits made Special:Contributions/Mariabrumana and Special:Contributions/79.1.134.5 compared to Special:Contributions/Torratte. Are the two former accounts being used to evade the block on the first? A checkuser was deemed 'likely' based on the edits but i'm still not sure whether it is worth a report. Regarding a Block

For some unknown reason, I had a block on my account that was lifted in short order. The notes seem to indicate the block may have been automatic. Since you were the admin who responded to my unblock request, I thought you might be able to answer my question. My talk page still has the responses/template, and I was wondering if it's alright to remove this. By the way, I've been a user for about a year and to my knowledge, have no violations of any kind, certainly none that would warrant a block. Thanks in advance and hope this was an appropriate way to deal with this. Allreet ( talk) 18:25, 22 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:18, 27 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Thank you for your comment, Jayron. I have great regard for discussions and would not attempt to squelch them. This merge effort has been active for some time, however, and when I convinced the user who initiated it that it is not appropriate to merge GET which is fringe pseudoscience with Expanding Earth theory which is peer-reviewed though discredited, an additional proposal discussion has been initiated citing that the page does not merit its own entry. This is in disregard of the decision to keep the article and is indicating undue bias towards the page due to its nature. Hi there, I think the user is back again despite his community ban. The new user User:SharpNail was created at 14:55 today, just two hours after his latest sockpuppet User:MaIl89 had his unblock refused. The new user has so far:

  • Referred to User:Protagon on their talk page, who was the first person to bring a sockpuppetry case against User:M.V.E.i..
  • Admitted that they are a sockpuppet account, albeit with claims that they will behave themselves this time.
  • Continued a thread at Talk:Russians, which User:MaIl89 started
  • Used very similar spelling/grammatical errors to previous incarnations.

Despite the user's insistence that they are making a clean start, this is clearly a block evasion. Do you think it's worth taking this to checkuser? I don't think we'll have much luck with the ban if it's already been broken after 2 hours! Papa November ( talk) 16:18, 19 June 2008 (UTC) reply

FYI -- I had blocked this user a couple hours before you started the CU case and left that note on his talk page -- and now he's actually asking for his M.V.E.i. account back, so there's no question about identity (though sleeper socks are still quite a legitimate issue). What do you all think? I'm all for allowing former bad users to reform, if that's what they are really doing, but he doesn't quite seem to get why he was banned in the first place. Block review

I am a little disappointed by your review of my block. I feel that the Wikipedia:Blocking policy has a place, if only to give editors confidence in the system, to have endorsed a block issued by an editor with whom I currently have three content disputes with, at Template:TardisIndexFile, CITV and Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion/2008_June_15, and who for most of this week has simply stalked me round the pedia is unsettling. I feel the least you should have done was to remove the block, and reissue it in accordace with policy. Fasach Nua ( talk) 11:31, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I am afraid I see no point in that. If the block was valid, the block was valid. There would be no net gain if I unblocked and instantly reblocked you; you still would have been unable to edit for the same amount of time. It would have been a pointless exercise. -- Jayron32. talk. contribs 14:15, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply
It is about confidence in the system, involved admins shouldnt invoke blocks, and if they do they shouldn't use lies to justify their actions. I would have felt a whole lot happier with an honest impartial administrator such as yourself, initiating the block, rather than a disruptive admin, who has been badgering me since I removed images from an article he owns. It is in the past but, I think it is something you should consider. Fasach Nua ( talk) 16:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Sure, there is nothing wrong with imoproving the article in your namespace, and then posting the improved version to the mainspace... However, be careful as other users may be also working on the mainspace version, please don't simply replace the existing version if it means destroying good work of others. User:Joe1p1p

I anticipated this might happen, given the checkuser results. I did not take the "Unrelated" result lightly (although I also noticed the involvement of an open proxy in the same result).

  1. I believe this passes the "quacks like a duck" test in any case.
  2. User:Octavian history had previously threatened to suggested he could take measures to conceal his IP address ( [10], [11]). Personally I am surprised there hasn't been an earlier attempt at concealment.
  3. Regarding his statement, "There are millions of people who beleive the same thing, and so many books about it". I suggest scanning Talk:Death of Marilyn Monroe and comparing how often this same assertion has been made, and by whom (here are some diff links [12], [13], [14], [15]).
  4. The second and third edits made by the Joe1p1p account were to archive part of the Talk:Marilyn Monroe page. ( [16], [17]). This is a relatively advanced task for an ostensibly new user. The last person to archive the talk page ( [18], [19]), User:Star-in-law, had already been associated with the Octavian_history account. In both cases they removed (from the active talk page) discussions critical of the purported sex tape that was in the news a couple of months ago (see my comments on the RFCU page about this appearing to be "damage control").

Hey, sorry to keep bothering you. I'm trying like heck to disengage from TW, because he's just ticking me off at this point and being deliberately goading. It was getting to the point I'm getting a bit snarky back, so I finally just ended the "discussion" as it were and removed it from my talk page [7].
