Thank you for the review, and thank you for your excellent work in cleaning up the signature. In return I can maybe give you some insights into the subject of that biography, which I can't include in the article because I have no citations for it. Nevil was a man with various facets to his character.

On the negative side, the judge condemned him for his callous treatment of the young soldier that he cheated, and lawyers revealed how Nevill then went further by writing a letter saying that his victim should pay up when the fraudulent bills came to term. After leaving prison, Nevill compounded this by claiming innocence in the first chapter of his book, and showing no regret or shame. Also in the book, he says he tricked a fellow-prisoner into scalding his own feet with boiling water, again showing no regret. We can either say that he was just horrid, or we can speculate on whether a mental condition, such as narcissism or being a sociopath might explain it. Either way, that side of him was not likeable.

On the positive side, he writes elegantly, i.e. clear, concise and to the point. The likes of Henry James and Faulkner would be proud of him. That book reveals that he learned well at Eton, and had a high intelligence. it raises the question of why he did not go on to university, why he resigned his commission in the army, and why he only seemed able to find work in the office of his wife's father who was a trader. Another question is raised, as to why (before his first crime) he ended up in such massive debt, when the newspapers didn't say how he ran up that debt. While Nevill was alive, there was no talk in the papers about him living the high life or even going to weddings and receptions, at a time when newspapers would take any excuse to name-drop the aristocracy. On the face of it, he lived an unusually quiet life. Putting together his apparently quiet life, his unusually massive debt, his unexplained resignation from the army after doing well, one might wonder whether Nevill was being blackmailed for reasons which would have been hushed up at that time. Some of my past researches of that period show rent boys blackmailing their customers and going around wearing gold watches. One of the more powerful reasons why UK law was changed in the 1960s to make gay activity a lot more legal than it had been, was to stop all that blackmail. Blackmail might explain why Nevill got into debt again, and earned himself a second imprisonment. If that were the case, one could feel compassion for him, even though he had that nasty side.

Whatever the truth of the matter, it was a complex case, and I get the feeling that the judges knew the facts, and knew exactly what they were doing. It was better to simply imprison him for the crimes of fraud, and leave the rest of it alone, for his own sake and that of his family. All very sad, really. Ah, my apologies. I had not realised that that was not a US term. I don't know whether they would have written down that material in the court record; they might have just dealt with it tacitly, due to it being illegal activity at that time. However there may well be something in the National Archive at Kew (London), or even more likely in letters in family records. Aristocratic family records tend to be kept for centuries, either in the remaining great houses, or in national archives. There is probably a lot of material in Nevill's life for a book or film, one day. Let's hope so. One striking element is how his life at Eton had prepared him for life in prison - it made him "clubbable" as he put it, so that he could very successfully survive socially and mentally in government positions, but also in the army and (in this case) in prison. In Nevill's case, my guess is that it was more like Cole Porter's marriage; that is, to a "beard" who knew the situation, but they clearly loved each other as friends - Porter buying her all that extravagant, tasteless jewellery, and her rushing to his side when he had that accident. You could say, of course, that Linda Porter was following the money, but Mrs Nevill was the one with the money and Nevill had none. Yet the newspapers said that she faithfully visited him in prison, for years, and that he cried when she had to testify in court (though otherwise kept a stiff upper lip). Yup, quite a story.
