Hello there. I don't know if you're familiar with the Twilight book series, but if not, I'll try to sum up: they're very popular, and the first novel has been adapted for the screen. I recently started working on its page, and as its release date (Dec 12) draws nearer, I think that the level of vandalism will begin to increase. I know semi-protection can't be applied in anticipation of vandalism, but I just thought I'd give a heads-up to an admin so that when the vandalism gets frequent, as I think it will, such an action can be executed swiftly. Thanks, Cliff smith talk 20:38, 16 October 2008 (UTC) reply

October 2008: RfA

Hey, Bibliomaniac. I'd like to be an admin, but I wonder if Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship is the way to go. If so, I'll read up on it and study it. Also, I'd like to ask you for a favour; is my history going to effect my nomination? Lastly, where can I find someone who would nominate me? Thanks for all your help, A talk 22:00, 16 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Hey

Hey man, what's going on. I'm doing pretty good now, really getting back into editing a lot. I went through some rough stuff during that hiatus...man, it lasted like a year all told. I felt really bad about that, but I just got hammered with crap. But I've really found a passion for Wikipedia again, albeit in an entirely different section from where I used to work. I'm really into pro wrestling now, and there's so much on the project to do. It's a lot of fun to work on and it's definitely a big subject. Gives me something to do when I'm not watching it :) I'm flexing those admin muscles lately, too; doing a lot of RC and NP patrolling. I just wish I hadn't had to spend a year dealing with all sorts of mess to get into this groove. All's well that ends well, though. How's things on your end? Cheers, Dooms Day 21:55, 17 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Nice job. You deserve it, getting all those RFA's going. By now you're probably responsible for half the admins on this project :). If you're ever looking for a good place to gnome about, WP:PW could sure use the help ;). Cheers, Dooms Day 22:02, 17 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Mentor Help

Hey, Bibliomaniac. I saw your name on the mentors' list, and I was wondering if you could help to check out my first GAN review. I looked over the article " Palau at the 2008 Summer Olympics," and I only found minor problems (all of which were quite quickly addressed by Basement12, the article's chief editor), so I think it's a go for "Pass." However, again, I'd like to see how meticulous I actually was from a fresh pair of eyes.

What do you think?

A request

Bibliomaniac15, I wanted to let you know about a situation that's arisen with Lenticel, whom you conominated for adminship. (I'm posting this same message to Wizardman, the other nominator.) If you have a moment, would you take a look at Talk:Chocolate Hills, and then at the note I left on Lenticel's talk page?

Lenticel hasn't responded in any way to my note, though he's edited since I left it. I prefer to try to resolve issues on Wikipedia through direct interaction with acquaintances, where possible, since that seems more personal and more likely to be friendly (and successful). If you agree with me that Lenticel should consider saying something conciliatory to Malleus, would you post something to that effect on Lenticel's talk page? I've never interacted with him, and he may consider me a busybody; he knows you and might pay more heed to a note from you.

If you don't think any response from Lenticel is warranted, that's fine, though I'd be interested to get your take on it. Malleus hasn't retired, but he's stated he'll be pulling back from volunteer work as a result of this incident (which he indicated was just the last straw, rather than the entire reason for his disillusionment). Malleus is a top-flight editor, and I'd like to give him hope that problems can be successfully resolved in a friendly way here on Wikipedia.

Hi B15. In March our University radio page was deleted. The reasons were to do with being unimportant and insignificant. I fail to understand this for an establishment in existance since 1976. Also, for the following reasons. We have many more members (as seen here http://www.studentradio.org.uk/stations/) than some of those stations whose Wiki pages still exist. Also, we have great value to our many alumni, including ex-DJ Thom Yorke. Our name Xpression FM appears in many other existing articles. Also, our campus newspaper (same target audience) does have a page (see where Xpression FM redirects). Is there chance of re-instating this article. What was the subjective reasoning for its deletion, when some of our less established counterparts had pages retained, and when importance is indicated in existing articles.

If the article needs to meet criteria, please can i have access to it in order to bring it up to standard. Thank you for your time

Wikipedia announces launch of new Valued pictures project

The official VP seal

The project goes live for nominations on 10 November, 2008 at 0:00 UTC

This Wikipedia Valued pictures project sets out to identify and encourage users' efforts in providing valuable images of high encyclopedic value, and to build up a resource for editors from other Wikimedia projects seeking such educational images for use online. The project also provides recognition to contributors who have made an effort to contribute enyclopedic images of difficult subjects which are very hard or nigh on impossible to obtain. The project will run alongside the existing Wikipedia Featured pictures and Picture peer review projects.

Please visit Valued picture candidates to nominate an image, or to help review the nominations. Anyone with an account on Wikipedia is welcome to nominate images, and also to take part in the open review process.

Thank you for the barnstar. I look at help pages occasionally, but it seems that others do a great job of answering questions, and have access to handy cut and paste answers, so I'm not sure if I shouldn't leave it to them to provide the answers. Other "regulars" on those pages have more expertise, too. In this case it was an oddball question, so I looked into it. -- A Knight Who Says Ni ( talk) 01:53, 2 November 2008 (UTC) reply

I've changed my signature in anticipation, but the request hasn't been completed. Best regards. -- OliverTwisted ( talk) 05:31, 15 December 2008 (UTC) reply

That was super quick. Thank you so much. It's a little frustrating when people judge you by your username and not your contributions. I had no idea vandalism was so rampant when I joined Wikipedia. Thanks again. -- OliverTwisted ( talk) 05:41, 15 December 2008 (UTC) reply

Usurpation

You performed my usurpation a few days ago from Ethan0 -> Ethan - thank you for that. I have one question, though. The instructions ( at various wikis, though I don't see it on en.wikipedia) say "You should check that the old account has been recreated and blocked to prevent someone else creating the account and impersonating you." This seems wise to me, but the user Ethan0 doesn't exist and isn't blocked now. I tried creating it but it wouldn't because it was too similar to Ethano (that user is unrelated to me). I wonder if Ethan0 should be created/blocked? Thanks for your help. - Ethan ( talk) • 2008-12-28 00:05 (UTC)

Okay, I've created User:Ethan0. Would you be able to block it? Thanks for your help. - Ethan ( talk) • 2008-12-28 01:27 (UTC)

WP:CHU question

Hi.

I have a question with regards to CHU requests when the requested name already exists. I would like to change my user name to User:Big Bird but that user name was created over 3 years ago. I wouldn't even bother asking you about this but, after that account was created in 2005, not a single edit has been made by that editor. Is there any circumstance under which I might be allowed to take that user name?

Thanks! SWik78 ( talkcontribs) 14:32, 29 December 2008 (UTC) reply

Happy Alansohn's Day!

I wanted to extend my genuine appreciation for your recognition. I spend time on Wikipedia trying to write articles to make this a better encyclopedia and deleting vandalism to make a bit less bad. I don't do this to be recognized or appreciated or to win an award. That you noticed what I've been doing and took the time to pass it on is truly appreciated on my part. The only shame of today being Alansohn's Day is that there are only three hours left to celebrate. Thanks again for your kind words. Alansohn ( talk) 01:56, 6 January 2009 (UTC) reply

CadenS rename

Hi, I'm CadenS's Adopter. Recently he requested a username change, which you declined because of his topic ban. Is there a policy or guideline that prevents a username from being changed during a topic ban? Since all his history and userspace would be retained, just under a different name, it should be easy to identify him for those of us who enforce his topic ban. Also, his desire to drop his real name is a legitimate reason, and refusing to allow it may be a privacy concern for him (I don't know if that's the case here, since he's had it for almost a year with no complaint, but it could be). So if there's something I'm missing, please let me know... and in the end of course it's your decision. - kotra ( talk) 18:40, 24 January 2009 (UTC) reply

  • I'd note that there are a few admins keeping an eye on his contribs, including myself and User:SheffieldSteel, and so there shouldn't be any problem ensuring that he keeps to his topic ban. If renamed, I'd suggest that the topic ban User:CadenS/topicban is imported over (actually, isn't this done automatically? - I forget) with the username tweaked, and that a copy of it remains on his usertalk page. Outline of Knowledge / Geography WikiProject Collaboration: Country outlines

As you probably remember, last spring we started work on the "Geography and places" branch of Wikipedia's Outline of knowledge. (WikiProject Lists of basic topics has been renamed to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge). The geography branch is in the form of a set of outline pages including one for every present-day nation or state in the world. That's 247 pages! This has been a huge undertaking, involving dozens of editors using advanced wiki-tools.

These pages have come a long way, and it won't be long before the whole set is complete enough to be moved to article space into the encyclopedia for the benefit of all. But there's still a lot of work left, and we could use all the help we can get!

While some editors prefer to work on one country at a time, most of our team members take on a particular entry and complete it across all the pages. This has come to be our standard type of task. To facilitate this process, we apply tools such as AutoWikiBrowser, Linky, and WikEd, all of which can be used to process a large number of pages in various (direct or indirect) ways.

In case you are interested in what we've been up to, here's a progress report:

Lately, development has been slow but continuous:

On our recruiting initiative, Penubag has done a fantastic job on the images for the awards we'll be using for our project's collaborations and contests. We now have 3 awards: a medal, a trophy, and a race ribbon. They all look tight. The trophy needs a small adjustment, but other than that, all 3 award images are complete and ready to use to create awards with.

Spartaz has warned us of (threatened to take) G4 (speedy delete) action if we run a competition that resembles the previously deleted Awards Center page. So whatever we do, any contests we run must differ substantially from the methods used there.

One type of competition I've been exploring is "edit racing". I'm in the process of working the bugs out of this concept - the first race didn't work as expected - you see, because we only had an award for first place, so the opponent didn't think it worthwhile to continue once it was clear who the winner would be. And since editors are in different time zones and usually need to start the race at different times, we need to base winning on personal start times - he who completes his assigned edits in the least time (rather than first), wins. And last but not least is quality control. What good is racing if the participants' edits are ripe with errors? So I'll be exploring possibilities such as using a referee (assigned to oversee a particular race), having participants watching each other for errors to knock them back, etc. I'm not sure yet.

Rich Farmbrough has been applying his bot expertise to filling in blanks in the country outlines (the population and area entries). I'm amazed at the number of edits he pumps out each day on a myriad of projects - ours makes up but a small time slice of his activity, and yet he has saved us many hours of manual work. Perhaps we should look into how he gets so much done.  :)

Zlerman has chosen to work on specific outlines, and has taken on Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. He also has been keen on noticing and reporting design issues pertaining to the whole set of country outlines. Keep up the good work!

Highfields is in charge of capitals, adding them to all the outlines. He is also our first race winner. Check out the award on his user pages.

In case you didn't know, this project has expanded to include work on any and all sets of pages represented on the country outlines. Once the set of country outlines go live (in article space), traffic will likely increase for all the links included on them. The quality and usefulness of those pages will reflect heavily on the country outlines. The outlines, which are essentially lists of links, are only as good as the links they present, and therefore we've branched out to solve the biggest problems with those as well. So far, we've taken on:

  • The creation of disambiguation pages for country adjectivals (" German", " French", " Taiwanese", etc.) We're about half done with these.
  • Wikifying the CIA World Factbook statistics on the "demographics of" country pages. We've been renaming those sections to provide a key string that AWB can use for targetting (for skipping and filtering). Once that's done, we'll be able to break the clean-up down into simple AWB search/replace tasks, because we'll be able to target just those pages that include the CIA stuff.
  • We've also been renaming the "Cuisine of" articles to their adjectival forms ("Chinese cuisine", "Italian cuisine", etc.), for consistency and because the adjective-based terms are generally the most commonly-used names for those cuisine types.

Blackadam2 and Thehelpfulone have been helping out with the "demographics of" pages mentioned above.

And we have a couple speed addicts (addicted to wiki-velocity, not drugs)...

Both Robert Skyhawk and Thehelpfulone prefer (and excel at) simple AWB search/replaces. Robert hasn't actually joined our team yet, but he has been helping out quite a bit from the sidelines (via the WP:AWB/Tasks page. Unfortunately, there has recently been a non-AWB chore that has been holding things up on the AWB front - an edit to all the headings which had to be reverted before too many new edits were made, because any new edits would make the reversion more difficult. The headings have been restored, so now the way is clear for AWB operations, and there are many search/replace tasks in the queue. AWB assignments have started again!

There's a similar bottleneck on the "Demographics of" pages (the "keying" mentioned above), but that's almost cleared too.  :)

With my internet access somewhat crippled as of late, I've been finding it difficult to keep up with you guys. However, I expect to be accessing a Linky-capable workstation on a faster server (I'm on it right now, as you can probably tell from my contributions list for the past couple of days), and so I should really pick up speed. Feels goooooood.  :)

Recruiting has been a bit slow (but steady), due in part to my crippled access, and because we've been waiting for the images for the awards to be completed. I expect the team to grow more rapidly as the bottlenecks are removed.

Well that's what's been happenin', and here's what's in the pipeline...

We've got a long list of entries that need to be completed across all the outlines and related page sets. If you would like to dive in with advanced wiki-tools to process this whole set of pages on one or more tasks, drop me a note!

As for me, I'm about to begin work on a set of lists that corresponds to all the standard links on the country outlines, and these will be presented on the Topic outline of countries which will be organized exactly like the country outlines. Aside from being an extremely useful navigation aid, it will allow editors to easily see the state of country coverage on Wikipedia - each list will be one link-set, and each list can be used with our wiki-tools to process the pages listed. I'll provide you with a link once I get up to speed on this.

In the meantime, keep in touch!

Cheers,

Thanks for putting the Rabies page on the semi-protected list

Thank you so much for doing this. I was really getting tired of reverting childish vandalism on this page and, because of its medical nature, I think it is especially important to maintain a sober and reliable article on the subject. Another page you might like to consider protcting is the one on Vampire Bats which also gets more than its fair share of infantile vandalism. Many thanks and best wishes, John Hill ( talk) 05:59, 11 February 2009 (UTC) reply

No problem. Just happened to make an occasional visit to RPP and caught your request. As for vampire bats, the vandalism is at best occasional. I'll watchlist it and protect it if it starts concentrating. bibliomaniac 1 5 06:10, 11 February 2009 (UTC) reply

Whacking with a wet trout or trouting is a common practice on Wikipedia when experienced editors slip up and make a silly mistake. It, along with sentencing to the village stocks, is used to resolve one-off instances of seemingly silly behavior amongst normally constructive community members, as opposed to long term patterns of disruptive edits, which earns warnings and blocks.

Example

Whack!
The above is a WikiTrout (Oncorhynchus macrowikipediensis), used to make subtle adjustments to the clue levels of experienced Wikipedians.
To whack a user with a wet trout, simply place {{ trout}} on their talk page.

On the less-sourced

Hi, biblio. Saw your entry on the gan/m list. I've reviewed a few articles for GA, but currently have one I'd like advice on please.

While all material in the article (Texas A&M Singing Cadets) likely to be challenged has inline citations, on the whole it's built from primary sources. The school, students' media, alumni portals, and such; although, a past trip, made on presidential invite, is referenced to a White House press release.

I'd said third-party secondary sources should be used (some topics're more fortunate than others in availability). I think it's decent and, probably has room for future expansion too. During its review the nominator vastly improved the article—it's well-written, etc.; the nom's taken the article as far as, with commitments and life offline, as he's able.

Could you give me your view on whether I can pass the current article? (I'll watch your Talk page for a bit, so I can see any reply here.) Thanks kindly. – Whitehorse1 00:26, 18 February 2009 (UTC) reply

Question

First of all thank you to change my name. Second, I don't know if this is the channel to contact you, but I see nothing else for the moment. I was so smart to not logout from my account and it seems both my old & new username are active :S I even made two contributions with my old username, unaware that my name change was already done and that it even was possible to keep both account's active. So my question to you, is how I can solve this? I just want this one account and if possible merge my contributions to my current account. If that is not possible, it's no problem to delete them (it's only one page I created) and redo it with this current account. Thank you in advance! ( .IT ( talk) 09:04, 20 February 2009 (UTC)) reply

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The project will run alongside the existing Wikipedia Featured pictures and Picture peer review projects.

Please visit Valued picture candidates to nominate an image, or to help review the nominations. Anyone with an account on Wikipedia is welcome to nominate images, and also to take part in the open review process.

RfA thanks

The RfA Barnstar
Bibliomaniac15, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:19, 25 November 2008 (UTC) reply

Hey Buddy

Hey there! Long time no see! I wanted to see if you could help me fix my user and talk page? It seems that the graphic has been moved to appear in the Wiki logo. I have tried everything to move it but I can't seem to figur it out. It happened when they put all of those messages about donating. Can you tell me how to fix it? I hope all is well and I am back to editing again. I have had some health issues that have kept me pretty quiet. But I am back! LOL Canyouhearmenow 14:02, 10 December 2008 (UTC) reply

I think I am going to go into the Christian Music articles and start creating some new articles. There seems to be a backlog of articles that need to be created. Since I am an historian in the entertainment field, it would only be natural for me to go somewhere that I know a lot about! LOL Anyway, I have turned that off a long time ago in my preferences. What I am talking about is that if you look at my user page and talk page you will see that my logo os been pushed into the wikipedia logo at the top of the page. I can't seem to fix it no matter what I try to do. Do you have any suggestions? Canyouhearmenow 03:32, 11 December 2008 (UTC) reply
I am using Internet Explorer. I am not using Mozilla. It was fine until they started campaigning for donations. Then all of a sudden I could not get it fixed. Canyouhearmenow 04:16, 11 December 2008 (UTC) reply

Repost of User:Faffafefu

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on User:Faffafefu, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because User:Faffafefu was previously deleted as a result of an articles for deletion (or another XfD)

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting User:Faffafefu, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Change name question

Hi. A contributor has for some reason requested my assistance in vanishing, including asking me to change his name to any name I like. (Maybe he thinks that as an admin I can do this myself?) I'm not entirely sure what brings him to me; I interacted with him on a question of copyright concern (good faith misunderstandings, I think) here. You can read his note to me here. I wanted to ask you if I can request a username change on his behalf with a link to my talk page or if I need to send him off to do it himself before deleting his pages as per his request. Any other input you have would be welcome. I've never been asked to help with a vanish issue before. :) I'll be watching here in case you have time and are able to respond. -- Moonriddengirl (talk) 00:23, 7 January 2009 (UTC) reply

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate.
