So I was just trying to get a handle on recording Revecy venir etc., when the effing evensong bells started going off right outside my window. Usually I like them ok, but it's pretty annoying when you're trying to record something. We'll see. Mak (talk) 22:28, 30 November 2006 (UTC) reply

I think it works. Pretty. While it would be better to have many different voices, (which can be hard to gather, especially for a volunteer job, unless you have a nearby supply of talented graduate students you can tempt with wine and food) -- I think you can get a pretty good result this way. Antandrus (talk) 02:54, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
Hm. What do you think of the bass? It sounds really weird to me, but I'm unable to be objective. Mak (talk) 03:22, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
It does sound just a bit odd; not severely, but not quite right. Not sure what you can do about it though. Oh, and whatever you do, don't start multiple versions of that file playing in several Firefox tabs on a Mac. Weird noises and messy crash.  :) Antandrus (talk) 03:25, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
lol, ok, I won't. I'm not sure why I would, but I'll be careful not to. Mak (talk) 03:29, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
My turn - sounds good enough for Wikipedia, though the bass - well, it's echoey. That's the only word. Sort of shallowly cavernous - oxymoron I know, but it's basically all right. How is this done, BTW? I'm intrigued, knowing virtually zilch about recording techniques. Press on! Cheers, Moreschi 15:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
Hm. Good enough for Wikipedia? Good enough to bother doing 40 more measures? (That was just one measure!) That's my real question. I agree with you on the bass. It's hollow and boomy sounding with no core, and the vowels are really off. I tried to do it so that if it weren't transposed it would be really bright, which helped a little bit, but it's still decidedly not right. I'll experiment with that part a bit more, see if I can do anything.
As for how I'm doing it, this is my first attempt at such things. Since I spent all my spare money on a lovely new Mac, since my PC died a horrible and untimely death, I didn't have extra money for, say, a good mike or fancy editing software, so I'm just using the computer's mic and GarageBand. I think it worked reasonably well for A Chantar, but I don't really think the mic is good enough for when I get into my high range and let loose, but perhaps it'll do. The tuning is difficult to get right, though. When I sing completely alone in a dry room, especially out of my range, I tend to drift a little bit, since I don't have perfect pitch (I think most people do drift a little), so it was really difficult to get the first tracks in tune enough. I was trying to match pitch with my crummy keyboard at first, but that didn't work very well, since it's in a decidedly equal temperament, which is my least favorite thing to sing such music in. Once I got a couple of the voices laid out it was easy enough to stay in tune, but the tuning could still be better, I think. I'll keep playing with it. Mak (talk) 22:14, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
Trade you my perfect pitch for the ability to sing.  :) I just laughed out loud at the thought that you may be well the first person to record Claude Le Jeune using GarageBand. Don't know why that is so hilarious ...
It's definitely worth pursuing. I agree with Moreschi. Have fun! Antandrus (talk) 23:26, 1 December 2006 (UTC) reply
I just uploaded a new version (same link). It's a bit ragged, and has already drifted up a semi-tone... argh. Not sure what to do about that, I'll probably have to record it all again, but I think the bass and tenor sound a lot better. Mak (talk) 00:18, 2 December 2006 (UTC) reply
It's a worthy project. Reminds me I could be making musical examples too, instead of whacking vandals with a blackjack, which seems to be what I spend too much time doing these days. Antandrus (talk) 03:09, 2 December 2006 (UTC) reply
Sounds better, though, right? I'm trying it with a drone now, to see if I can stop the drifting, but 1) I'm tired now and 2) it sounds a bit straitjacketed, but that might just be because of 1. Mak (talk) 03:33, 2 December 2006 (UTC) reply

(arbitrarily de-indenting) It does sound better, indeed. Are there times of day you prefer singing? Weekend coming up ... :) Antandrus (talk) 03:36, 2 December 2006 (UTC) reply

I like to sing on a day when I've slept in just a little, about an hour after a good brunch. For some reason those seem rarely to occur. I generally like to sing in the afternoon best, when I've properly woken up but am not exhausted yet. Yay! Weekend! Although I have to sing ungodly early every Sunday, which kinda cuts into the weekend to an unreasonable degree, but at least it's singing for money, so that's good. Mak (talk) 03:42, 2 December 2006 (UTC) reply
Me again - it does sound a lot better, specially the bass. Definitely worth persevering with. The only I would say is that whatever equipment you're using does rather have a panic attack when your voice climbs up to hit whatever high note that is on "saison", though "Le courant" sounds fine. Ran into a guy who I'd sung shape-note music with, who I hadn't seen for ages. That was kind of neat - he's going to come to one of OUR concerts soon - I'm always recruiting! How to Revert?

Talk:List of choirs is on my watchlist, so I'll know if /when someone answers my question there. So this morning I discovered a question there by Afil. I checked out Afil's concern & it's clearly junk, so I wanted to revert it. My question is, is there a "revert" button somewhere, or do you just have to go in and manually take out the offending addition?

Also, the same user made a change a day later to another choir, but I can't figure out if it's something that should be kept or not... Could you take a gander at it? Thanks! Mpwrmnt 19:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Ok, I had done everything up to the last 2 steps (edit/save). That's easy - I'll just do it myself next time. BUT it looks like at the same time they were vandalizing one choir, they were adding a link to another choir with an existing article, which was lost with your revert. How can a vandal be destructive AND constructive at the same time?!?!? Puzzled, Mpwrmnt 19:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Dresden Orchestra Characteristics

Hello Antandrus, you've answered some questions for me before, and now I need your help again. I was told to write an essay on the origins of the orchestra, and my teacher sugested to include information about the king's 24 violins of Louis IV (of which I've found plenty of information) and also of the Dresden orchestra. Of the latter I have only found that it was created in the year of 1584, but i need to know more about its characteristics, what intruments it had, how many were they, what was their repertoire, what were their stylistic characteristics, etc. Thank you very much for all your help, sincerely, Charly. -- Cha daniels 04:05, 5 December 2006 (UTC) reply

It's an interesting assignment! I would also strongly recommend looking at the history of the Venetian school, since they used a lot of instruments at Saint Mark's. Many people who trained and worked there moved elsewhere, especially Germany, and doubtless influenced what happened at Dresden ( Hans Leo Hassler, possibly, as well as others). A lot of the action in early large instrumental ensembles was in north Italy and Germany, especially before the 30 Years War shut everything down for most of the early 17th century. Look also at the orchestration for Orfeo for a good bit to write about (Monteverdi was at Venice for a while too...) Fun, Antandrus (talk) 04:15, 5 December 2006 (UTC) reply
The article in the New Grove on Dresden gives some good information; I see that the court of Saxony employed a lot of instrumentalists; indeed they may have been consciously competing with the Venetians some of the time. Antandrus (talk) 04:17, 5 December 2006 (UTC) reply

"Doorbell" article

While giving the article "Doorbell" a routine copy edit, I found that the version I started from—the latest version at that point—showed vestiges of vandalistic attention that had been lavished on it at different times. I looked into "History" and found, for instance, that "inside the building," which makes sense in connection with doorbells, had been changed to "inside the turkey," which does not, and had then become "inside the turnkey," which also does not but may have been provided by a well-meaning person.

A parallel sequence went like this: "In most wired systems..." to "In most sex positions..." to "In most set positions..." In both places, I've restored what I think should be there. I don't know much about doorbells or wiring, however, and I wonder whether the rest of the article is all right.

I'm posting here because your name came up in History as a dedicated reverter (sorry, but them who has gets, you know). The dates in History suggest that the Doorbell article may not be on anyone's watchlist. Do you know who the local doorbell expert is? Someone with technical knowledge should check this article. Cognita 04:51, 11 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Thanks! Comparing Yuckfoo's version and mine, and assuming that Yuckfoo knows doorbells, it seems that the only remaining question is whether the last word should be "light" or "horn." Another part of the article says deaf people use a light as the signal.
As for the need for copy editors, yeah, I noticed. Cognita 05:32, 11 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Hi, Antandrus. Can we sprotect Mauna Loa for a while? An entire section of the article was destroyed back on November 21, and no one noticed for a month!! This is crazy: one of our featured articles is being trashed under the weight of vandals.

New page: Parthenia (music)

Antandrus, may I ask you to have a look at my new page: Parthenia (music). This is my very first entire contribution to Wiki, and I would like to ensure that it 'conforms'. As a lover of this music like myself, and an experienced editor, I am sure you can improve on the layout or whatever is missing. 'Parthenia' was a serious lacuna in Wiki, and I'll now link the mentions in John Bull etc. to the new page. Any editing, comments, criticism, will be gratefully received. With many thanks. Nick Michael 22:54, 20 December 2006 (UTC) reply

I think there should probably be a 'disambiguation' page involved, as entering Parthenia alone brings up something completely different, but I have no idea how to create such a page. Nick Michael

Very many thanks Antandrus for your sage editing. The article looks far more respectable now!
I will bear in mind the subjects you mention that require articles (don't know if I'm really qualified to write some of these...).
However I would like to prioritize enlarging the article on Farnaby, and also want to make a new article on Daniel Hopfer (no musician - the engraver). I'll see if I get time over Christmas.

It is too bad! As for the Paulus article, I have set up a little project for myself to create/improve articles in that sphere, i.e. American composers/musicians I am fond of for one reason or another, like Dominick Argento, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, & Elliot Forbes. That's a great idea. There are probably quite a few competent performers around Wikipedia who might be able to contribute. Hm ... Antandrus (talk) 16:01, 26 December 2006 (UTC) reply
OK, now the question is how to get it all pretty and attractive, so it looks well-organized enough that people will bother signing up, and where to put information about it so that people will sign up. The difficult thing about a project like this is that you have to get something rolling at the beginning, or people won't want to bother with it, and will assume it will just fizzle out in a couple weeks. Which it might, if no one requests anything and no one signs up. (pokes all the musicians and recording engineers who read this to sign up). It seems like Wikipedia:Requested pictures is going quite well. This can do the same, it just takes a few more volunteers and a bit more organizing. Mak (talk) 17:01, 26 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Wikibooks

Hi, Antandrus.

I've returned to actively editing Wikipedia, which you might or might not have noticed from some edits I've been doing recently. Sorry I didn't post a wikibreak message or anything. It's nice to see that you're still active and doing an excellent job in the fight against vandals.

I was wondering if you had any interest in venturing over to Wikibooks and working on some material there, specifically musicology, although there are a lot of possible topics to cover [6]. I don't really know a whole lot about Wikibooks, but maybe it's worth looking into? I would be willing to assist with the musicology section, and possibly write a guide to playing the organ--except that those both seem like dauntingly huge projects to cover well. There's certainly enough around here to keep me busy, anyways. — Sesquialtera II ( talk) 03:02, 27 December 2006 (UTC) reply

New page for cleanup?

Hi there! Hoping your solsticial event has been restful, or exciting, or profound, or whatever it is supposed to be. (How much more PC can I get?) Now, on to business: This article ( Brian Ganz) just appeared, which I noticed because of the link to Leon Fleisher. I have tagged it as needing cleanup, but you will know better than I if it's the proper tag for the press-release article that it is.

I am having some people over tonight to read through some Obrecht (Missa Rosa Playsante), and if there's time Dufay (Nuper...), Josquin (Nymphes...), and maybe even Tallis (Lamentations); and also if there's time, some things I've written, so's I can at least hear how they sound. Help Please!

Hi there, I was recently contacted by a user who I'd like to keep anonymous who says that his/her edits are being reverted unfairly, and the reason being that an admin is saing he is a sockpuppet even though I assume his edits were perfectly fine and not against Wikipedia Policy in any way, I've emailed him and he says he is going to send me links of these examples of unfair reversion shortly and that he believes that this particular Administrator is picking on him unfairly, I'm not saying that he is right or wrong and that the Admin is right or wrong. At the minute I have no evidence except for his email, but hopefully he/she will shortly send me the evidence of this matter. I also provided links on the email about administrator abuse and a link to send a message directly to Jimbo Wales, but I told he/she that this should be a last resort. This user also says that he/she has contacted other Admins to investigae this, but he is asking for my help so I am trying to do my best (he also pointed out that he noticed on my User Page I would like to be a admin some day and that he would happily nominate me if I could help him - but I'm not doing it for that, I don't even think I'm experienced enough to be an admin!). Anyway I would just like some adivce on this matter. Also the user claimed that he had to create a new account to lose the watchful eye of the Admin who he believes is treating him unfairly, and that he was an experienced user. But please do not add this user to the sock puppet page as he is not really a sockpuppet and not vandalising Wikipedia at all, please could you help me to help him and if you will need the links to these unfair reversions, I will send them to you as soon as I get them (but please tell me if you will need them or any other data). I'm not taking sides with anyoe over this matter as I do not know the facts so I'm just trying to help this user get to the bottom of this so he can continue editing Wikipedia! Please Help soon and please reply on my talk page.

Well, indeed, it was truly wonderful! Somewhat surprisingly, though, there wasn't a single "early music" song on the whole concert! It was all "early American!!" Their sound is unearthly, regardless of WHAT music they're singing - it just transports you to another sphere somehow. Amazing. I succumbed & bought both of their "early American" CD's. Ran into a guy who I'd sung shape-note music with, who I hadn't seen for ages. That was kind of neat - he's going to come to one of OUR concerts soon - I'm always recruiting! I want to add a couple of lines to their article about their branching out into American music, but not tonite!! Mpwrmnt 10:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC) reply

A second thanks from me, for the same block. Yup, the kids are out of school for the holidays; we can probably look forward to higher levels of vandalsim for the next couple of weeks. Doc Tropics 18:59, 21 December 2006 (UTC) reply
A second "you're welcome". Yes indeed: and unfortunately it is likely to coincide with many of the regular vandal-patrollers being away for the holidays. Sigh... Antandrus (talk) 20:12, 21 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Revamp of Giles Farnaby

Antandrus, as announced, I have entirely revamped and enlarged the Giles Farnaby article. My source was mainly the bio in MB XXIV. May I again ask you to have a look and add any necessary edits. Hope this meets with your approval. Thanks a lot. Nick Michael 23:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Need a little help please

Hi! I was just wondering if you could help me block an unregistered user who is angry about the edits I have made to his page and has thus decided to go to my talk and profile page and blanked them! I have reverted all this, but I think he/she should be blocked. His IP is 66.21.220.86. His talk is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:66.21.220.86. Thankss! Ashu just worked hard. xD 03:17, 22 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Socks

Thanks for confirming my suspicions re: the socks at Don Lorenzo Perosi. You might want to have a look at the suspected sock page I set up for them.-- Dmz5 09:35, 22 December 2006 (UTC) reply

I agree about LorenzoPerosi. Funny enough I have come across at least two other users who, in my opinion, are both a) very knowledgeable musicians making some excellent contributions and b) contentious and somewhat incivil editors. It is too bad! As for the Paulus article, I have set up a little project for myself to create/improve articles in that sphere, i.e. American composers/musicians I am fond of for one reason or another, like Dominick Argento, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, & Elliot Forbes. It's remarkably easy to create a good article in ~15-20 minutes using the Grove & Newspaper archives.-- Dmz5 *Edits* *Talk* 18:18, 22 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Sneaky spammer

Regarding This User and his contributions. If you notice the links he posts in articles concerning weight loss and models, they all lead to similar websites, with similar templates. You will also notice that in the top right corner of all the sites there is a link to the same amazon site selling diet pills etc. I suspect that this user is doing nothing more than sneaky advertising, but am unsure how to deal with him, having only been here a short time. I'm passing him on into your capable hands. Thanks! :)

albuquerque trivia

those edits were done by me, i forgot to sign in. i moved it in its own section. i do believe, however, that much of that trivia is nonsequencial or can/needs to be moved into other categories. Urban909

yes i totally agree. that section, in general, probably should just be deleted. actually, its taken me a week thus far to go through and move, edit, change, sub-catergorize, etc albuquerque's page. its an absolute mess! Urban909

You know, removal of false aligations from my talk page that isn't even posted by a Wikipedia personel is totally within my rights. And, subsequentally, I demand that it is removed. Demand because

A) It is a false allegation that was made by non-wikipedia personel B) You protected it in the first place C) I don't want it there

And, quite frankly, both locking and banning me was uncalled for.

At any time YOU COULD HAVE checked the validity of the claim (and I don't act like I understand how the notifications work, all I know is that placing a tag can put a page on a list). Isn't it your responsibility to verify a claim before making an action? Anyone could take an existing notification of ban and post it on another persons talk page. User:72.187.119.195

<<trolling removed>>

The warnings on your talk page are quite appropriate, considering your unproductive and disruptive behavior. We are a project to build an encyclopedia, not a free-fire zone for trolling. I have no patience for trolls and will block them on sight; take that as a warning. Instead of bothering us, I suggest you go have nice Christmas and happy new year. And please troll no more. New project

The beginning of a new project I thought you might be interested in, partially in response to the whole J.S. Bach mess: Wikipedia:Requested recordings. Cheers, Mak (talk) 07:02, 26 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Looks to me like you're going about it the right way, putting notice in all the right places. (I can't currently join as either violinist or pianist -- I haven't been practicing enough recently to play to my own standards.) Antandrus (talk) 22:10, 26 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Hey, welcome back!
I haven't given the other Wikimedia projects a close look; might in the future though. Working here is job enough for now. Maybe once all the Renaissance composer articles are written up to a high standard ... but that seems like a long way off.  :) Antandrus (talk) 03:05, 27 December 2006 (UTC) reply

It promises to be a good evening, depending on how many actually arrive. We shall see... -- Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 17:06, 27 December 2006 (UTC) reply

<hrmrhoom> Please excuse me, but if you happen to have a microphone of some sort, you might put it out and see what happens. I'm guessing it won't be a super-brilliant recording, but I don't think those works have any recording at all, and perhaps a passage could be gotten out of it which would be a good illustration :) Just a thought, because we don't seem to have enough free recordings of music which could be free.

Respectfully... Tellyaddict Talk 17:26, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

In respone to your response

Hi there, No no, you were not the one tagging this person as a Sock puppet and sorry if I accidentaly made you think you were, but I just chose you at random from the list of administrators and it was purely just to get your adivce on the matter, I hope you don't mind if I ask you any more questions on this matter at a later date, even though I've been here for a few months I won't know half as much as you do about that sort of thing. Thanks

No objection at all ... I wasn't fully familiar with the history. Looking now at how he's been behaving on Ukraine and Holodomor-related articles, I think it's probably a good idea. Antandrus (talk) 03:21, 31 December 2006 (UTC) reply

What's the deal with User talk:64.107.0.195?

That didn't seem like a big deal to me...he made some very minor uncited comments, and I removed them as a matter of course. No big deal, really, and of course I was already aware that various commentators have made comments to that effect...my only issue was with including them uncited in the article. I explained my concerns on his talk page...and for some reason, he chose to be obtuse and added a citation for the fact that 6am is, in fact, morning. FWIW, I don't provide a link for it, but my email is enabled. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 05:17, 31 December 2006 (UTC) reply
