- Yeah, that's definitely why the #'s are off. The Academy is kinda picky about things like "graduation" and "appointments". Since no Supe was appointed to replace Jonathan Williams, the official story is that the position was "vacated" and anyone acting in the capacity wasn't "really" the Supe, just filling in until a new one was appointed. Perhaps add Wadsworth as "acting Supe" for the dates covered, but don't list him with the numeral #2. Ahodges7 talk 01:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Whatever the Today's FA is becomes a vandal magnet. And they won't protect it, which many disagree with. Usually lots are watching it, so vandalism gets reverted fast. It'll end after 24 hours, then you compare the changes from before it went on the main page and keep the good ones. Since you appear to be a more experienced wikipedia author than I am, and also have interest in the "United States Military Academy" I am writing you for advise.
My son is a member of the West Point Class of 2009 which graduated on May 23. I have made a panorama of the graduation parade on The Plain which I am willing to make available for the West Point article, possibly in conjunction with "Life in the corps" paragraph. Per your suggestion, Ahodges7, I just created a user page. Thank you for suggesting it. Thanks also for your diplomatic wording and for noting that it can be simple. That made your suggestion (and its proposed "task") less daunting. I'm curious. You said that I "might want to create a basic user page. Other editors will begin to take your edits more seriously if you did." Does that mean that editors do not take seriously the edits of a user who does not have a user page? As I reflect on it, perhaps it means that a user page allows other editors to see your edit as that of a real person (who has a user page) instead of an unknown person (who does not have a user page). You'll be happy to know that I just read a few of the many pages that are linked on the navbox for Wiki policies, guidelines, etc. Wow, do I have a lot to read and learn. The ones I have read so far have given me an idea of some of the editing mistakes I have been making unknowingly. I will try to avoid those mistakes in the future. - I noticed that your user page looks great. What I meant was an editor that does not have a user page at all "looks like an amateur" to a lot of other editors. a simple user page shows that you mean business. yours looks a lot like my first version did. it takes a while to understand the mark up coding to generate colors, boxes, and fancy positioning of icons and graphics. like I said, best way to do it is copy someone else's and play around with it, perhaps in your sandbox. see what modifications make what changes to the look. good luck! That's a nice photo, but it's not really of Storm King. It's an excellent photo of Crow's Nest (the 1,400-foot peak on USMA property to the south ... you can tell because Route 9W is visible at the left of the panorama), however ... maybe we should start an article on that one. And you err in saying it's in Storm King State Park. On the desk in front of me I'm looking at New York-New Jersey Trail Conference West of Hudson Trail Map #113* which shows quite clearly that Crow's Nest is on USMA property. (In other words, the general public can't easily hike it). Perhaps only the lower northern slopes are in the state park. I will correct the article accordingly. You know, in addition to United States Military Academy grounds and facilities, you might want to start another article on West Point Military Reservation, the huge back area where Camp Buckner is held and the long march to the top of the ski slope begins at the end of Beast. That would be what properly belongs in Category:Protected areas of Orange County, New York. In addition to its role in the academy curriculum, you could also discuss its local economic impact — since it's all off the local tax rolls, DoD pays an annual impact fee to at least the Highland Falls school district and (maybe) the Town of Highlands to make up for the lost taxes. The problem with photos of Bear Mountain Bridge is the reverse of the usual issue — there are too many angles from which a good photo can be taken. For a while I've been wanting a view from the circle or toll booths with Anthony's Nose framing the towers. I see you uploaded a new version of the picture of the MacArthur Monument at West Point. Mea maxima culpa, I accidentally caused the old one to be deleted when I tagged it with a {{Template:Non-free 3D art}} tag during the featured article review of General Douglas MacArthur. The problem is that there is no Freedom of Panorama in the United States. So there is "copyright" on the statue. I suggest uploading a low resolution copy of new image to the English Wikipedia. After looking at photos of the graduation ceremonies this weekend, I thought that perhaps the cadet uniforms needs the wikipedia treatment. Like maybe USMA cadet uniforms. I did find this USMA page, but it has no photos. I have never seen a photo of the summer whites, although I notice the cadets sometimes where the dress gray and full dress (I hope I have the terminology correct) coats with the white trousers. Do the cadets sometimes wear BDUs to class? I think I have seen photos of that happening.
On a related note, I have noticed since 9/11/2001 soldiers working in office settings, even the Pentagon, wearing BDUs more often than before. It used to be that you would almost always see office staff wearing dress uniforms (the old greens) in an office setting. Is this true, and is it a trend that started with 9/11?

- USMA uniforms...oh my. There are so many! Let's see, to answer your questions:
- - the summer whites are called "India Whites". You can see me sporting them here back in Aug 1997.
- - the full dress and dress gray are often worn over white pants in the spring/fall when the temps are in the 70's
- - currently, cadets wear the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) (the BDU's replacement) to class once a week, usually on Thursdays
- - cadets and staff switch to ACUs full time the day after graduation, until the 2nd week of August
- - you are correct, since 9/11, the wear of ACUs in an office setting where the old "Class B's" (greens) would have previously been appropriate, has been common practice, but Sec of Defense Gates has recently directed a change to this practice in the Wash DC garrison environment. I know that in wartime classes may graduate early. I thought the class of 1943 graduated in 1942, as it says on the alumni lists. But this page (open 1940s classes) says there were classes in 1942, 1943JAN, 1943Jun, and 1944. So when did class of '43 really graduate and why were there two groups of them? Robert V. - I'm pretty sure that if I recall correctly, during WWII, the program was designed to only be 3 years long, rather than the traditional four. Obviously during the ramp-up of the Army during 1942-1943, they needed lots of LTs. I'd have to look up just exactly why there were two grad dates. My guess is that 43Jan was the original 43 class and 43Jun was originally supposed to graduate in 44. I assisted the class of 1946's 65th reunion last spring and they didn't mention this in our conversations, so by then the course of instruction was back to normal. More to follow... There are definitely other classes that had early graduations -- with a return trip to USMA for one of them! I distinctly remember from one of my plebe/yearling military history courses about that class. The "Orioles" of 1918-1919 graduated early and those grads were required to return for additional training, with dire consequences to their morale, careers, and confusion to the USMA support and other cadets. Classes in 1917-1918 graduated early.

Another editor insists it only means tactical while I maintain (based on my son's experience and several briefings from the sup to parents) in academies it means Teach, Advise, and Counsel.
I do not have a desire to get into a revert war.

- Yeah, that's definitely why the #'s are off. The Academy is kinda picky about things like "graduation" and "appointments". Since no Supe was appointed to replace Jonathan Williams, the official story is that the position was "vacated" and anyone acting in the capacity wasn't "really" the Supe, just filling in until a new one was appointed. Perhaps add Wadsworth as "acting Supe" for the dates covered, but don't list him with the numeral #2. Ahodges7 talk 01:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Whatever the Today's FA is becomes a vandal magnet. And they won't protect it, which many disagree with. Usually lots are watching it, so vandalism gets reverted fast. It'll end after 24 hours, then you compare the changes from before it went on the main page and keep the good ones. Since you appear to be a more experienced wikipedia author than I am, and also have interest in the "United States Military Academy" I am writing you for advise.
My son is a member of the West Point Class of 2009 which graduated on May 23. I have made a panorama of the graduation parade on The Plain which I am willing to make available for the West Point article, possibly in conjunction with "Life in the corps" paragraph. United States Military Academy is the standard category that I use when I upload USMA-related photos. thanks for your interest. that photo would also go well somewhere on

Per your suggestion, Ahodges7, I just created a user page. Thank you for suggesting it. Thanks also for your diplomatic wording and for noting that it can be simple. That made your suggestion (and its proposed "task") less daunting. I'm curious. You said that I "might want to create a basic user page. Other editors will begin to take your edits more seriously if you did." Does that mean that editors do not take seriously the edits of a user who does not have a user page? As I reflect on it, perhaps it means that a user page allows other editors to see your edit as that of a real person (who has a user page) instead of an unknown person (who does not have a user page). You'll be happy to know that I just read a few of the many pages that are linked on the navbox for Wiki policies, guidelines, etc. Wow, do I have a lot to read and learn. The ones I have read so far have given me an idea of some of the editing mistakes I have been making unknowingly. I will try to avoid those mistakes in the future. What I meant was an editor that does not have a user page at all "looks like an amateur" to a lot of other editors. a simple user page shows that you mean business. yours looks a lot like my first version did. it takes a while to understand the mark up coding to generate colors, boxes, and fancy positioning of icons and graphics. like I said, best way to do it is copy someone else's and play around with it, perhaps in your sandbox. see what modifications make what changes to the look. good luck! That's a nice photo, but it's not really of Storm King. It's an excellent photo of Crow's Nest (the 1,400-foot peak on USMA property to the south ... you can tell because Route 9W is visible at the left of the panorama), however ... maybe we should start an article on that one. - Pretty good! Acutally, though, we need to see if there's any other Crow's Nest in NY via the GNIS server, then rename the article either "Crow's Nest (New York)" or "Crow's Nest (Orange County, New York)". WP:MOUNTAIN
naming conventions call for using political subdivisions rather than ranges to disambiguate. That's why the highest mountain in the Catskills is "
Slide Mountain (Ulster County, New York)" rather than "Slide Mountain (Catskills)".
And you err in saying it's in Storm King State Park. On the desk in front of me I'm looking at New York-New Jersey Trail Conference West of Hudson Trail Map #113* which shows quite clearly that Crow's Nest is on USMA property. (In other words, the general public can't easily hike it). Perhaps only the lower northern slopes are in the state park. I will correct the article accordingly. naming conventions call for using political subdivisions rather than ranges to disambiguate. That's why the highest mountain in the Catskills is "

You know, in addition to United States Military Academy grounds and facilities, you might want to start another article on West Point Military Reservation, the huge back area where Camp Buckner is held and the long march to the top of the ski slope begins at the end of Beast. That would be what properly belongs in Category:Protected areas of Orange County, New York. In addition to its role in the academy curriculum, you could also discuss its local economic impact — since it's all off the local tax rolls, DoD pays an annual impact fee to at least the Highland Falls school district and (maybe) the Town of Highlands to make up for the lost taxes. The problem with photos of Bear Mountain Bridge is the reverse of the usual issue — there are too many angles from which a good photo can be taken. For a while I've been wanting a view from the circle or toll booths with Anthony's Nose framing the towers. But I like this because the bridge dominates the view in that one (whereas from the mountains you're looking down on it). Daniel Case ( talk) 13:10, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that the Cram firm's work constitutes the bulk of architecture at the campus. But Hunt was a profound influence in American architecture, so it wouldn't surprise me if the Boston firm followed his styling cues. In any case, an interesting discussion. It's a well-done piece. - I think the most concise summary I've seen on this are the field notes appended to the entry on Pershing Barracks at the Historic American Buildings Survey: "Significance: The West Academic Building is the largest surviving 19th century building at the Academy. It was the first of the modern academic buildings at the Academy and foreshadowed the great architectural boom of the early 20th century. I see you uploaded a new version of the picture of the MacArthur Monument at West Point. Mea maxima culpa, I accidentally caused the old one to be deleted when I tagged it with a {{Template:Non-free 3D art}} tag during the featured article review of General Douglas MacArthur. The problem is that there is no Freedom of Panorama in the United States. So there is "copyright" on the statue. I suggest uploading a low resolution copy of new image to the English Wikipedia. - OK. I think I have it now. I'm not quite sure how a sculpture of a military general on a military reservation can't be PD in some way. Walker Hancock is not trying to make money off of that sculpture in any way. I uploaded it directly to wikipedia with a fair use tag. Not entirely sure I tagged it correctly. After looking at photos of the graduation ceremonies this weekend, I thought that perhaps the cadet uniforms needs the wikipedia treatment. Like maybe USMA cadet uniforms. I did find this USMA page, but it has no photos. I have never seen a photo of the summer whites, although I notice the cadets sometimes where the dress gray and full dress (I hope I have the terminology correct) coats with the white trousers. Do the cadets sometimes wear BDUs to class? I think I have seen photos of that happening.
On a related note, I have noticed since 9/11/2001 soldiers working in office settings, even the Pentagon, wearing BDUs more often than before. It used to be that you would almost always see office staff wearing dress uniforms (the old greens) in an office setting. Is this true, and is it a trend that started with 9/11?

- USMA uniforms...oh my. There are so many! Let's see, to answer your questions:
- - the summer whites are called "India Whites". You can see me sporting them here back in Aug 1997.
- - the full dress and dress gray are often worn over white pants in the spring/fall when the temps are in the 70's
- - currently, cadets wear the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) (the BDU's replacement) to class once a week, usually on Thursdays
- - cadets and staff switch to ACUs full time the day after graduation, until the 2nd week of August
- - you are correct, since 9/11, the wear of ACUs in an office setting where the old "Class B's" (greens) would have previously been appropriate, has been common practice, but Sec of Defense Gates has recently directed a change to this practice in the Wash DC garrison environment. At every other Army post, ACUs are the daily wear uniform in the garrison environment, and have been since well before 9/11.

I know that in wartime classes may graduate early. I thought the class of 1943 graduated in 1942, as it says on the alumni lists. But this page (open 1940s classes) says there were classes in 1942, 1943JAN, 1943Jun, and 1944. So when did class of '43 really graduate and why were there two groups of them? Robert V. - I'm pretty sure that if I recall correctly, during WWII, the program was designed to only be 3 years long, rather than the traditional four. Obviously during the ramp-up of the Army during 1942-1943, they needed lots of LTs. I'd have to look up just exactly why there were two grad dates. My guess is that 43Jan was the original 43 class and 43Jun was originally supposed to graduate in 44. I assisted the class of 1946's 65th reunion last spring and they didn't mention this in our conversations, so by then the course of instruction was back to normal. More to follow... There are definitely other classes that had early graduations -- with a return trip to USMA for one of them! I distinctly remember from one of my plebe/yearling military history courses about that class. The "Orioles" of 1918-1919 graduated early and those grads were required to return for additional training, with dire consequences to their morale, careers, and confusion to the USMA support and other cadets. Classes in 1917-1918 graduated early.

As one of the West Point article's more senior editors, would you please look at the discussion of the meaning of TAC officer there.
Another editor insists it only means tactical while I maintain (based on my son's experience and several briefings from the sup to parents) in academies it means Teach, Advise, and Counsel.
I do not have a desire to get into a revert war.
