Flurry of activity at Wet market...?

What just happened at Wet market? How did that attract the attention of a half dozen editors in the span of a few minutes...? Thanks for (hopefully) putting an end to it.

I was posting a talk page post while this all happened. If nothing comes of the talk page post, I imagine it would be okay to eventually restore the removed material. — MarkH21 talk 01:40, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

@ MarkH21: I'm not sure what the issue is in the content dispute, but it was obviously a hot and heavy edit war. I protected the page and warned the one IP who had not already received a warning. A talk page discussion is definitely in order. If the edit warring resumes I am going to drop the hammer. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 02:25, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
P.S. I just blocked one of the IPs who seems to be running amok. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 02:29, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Yeah it really exploded after my second/last revert. The content dispute wasn’t complicated: the original IP removed a long-standing sentence from the lead, claiming that it wasn’t supported by the sources. This particular sentenced was removed a few times by IPs in the past, but the removal was usually quickly reinstated without major disruptions. I’m just surprised that it caught the fervent attention of so many IPs / new editors on both sides.
Thanks for your attention on this matter though. It seems that all of the other involved parties in this case were IPs or very new editors, so the semi protection should resolve the issue without the need for a big hammer! — MarkH21 talk 02:38, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Gaming the system

How to protect the Wikipedia project from users who carry agendas - Community before using the tools, it must use the mind, no problem, you did that - However, he misguided the community to apply his hegemony freely and indeed he did after 12 hours of your protection tag, to display his authority, domination, and ownership with his bunch of associated users. He removed twice 12,837‎ bytes of well-sourced material from the article about Ehsan Sehgal without explanation and discussion, until now, he couldn't explain, except his phobia. As honesty and fairness, you should undo his reversion for discussion and reaching consensus, which he cannot. You jumped in his gaming the system since he ignored and encountered this - "There have been some radical changes to this article. Saqib please discuss your concerns here before reverting again to an old version. ϢereSpielChequers 16:31, 3 May 2020 (UTC)." How you show your honesty and fairness, it is up to you. Hello My name is Kamrul. This is my first article on Wikipedia. I am now the new Wikipedia editor. I am bored sitting at home all day because the university is currently closed. So I thought let's do something. That's why I came to Wikipedia. I thought of writing the article "Iftekhar Rafsan" because I am one of his super fan. I don't know how successful I was in writing this article but I tried my best. If I have any mistakes, I have a request to correct them. Finally, my request was that the article be reviewed once. Thank you

Hi Kamrul and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions to the project. I see that your draft has been submitted for review. That should be finished within a few days. If there are any issues with the draft you will be notified on your talk page. In the meantime I have left some links on your talk page that you may find helpful. Happy editing! - Ad Orientem ( talk) 17:11, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Sorry I always get that one confused with Blueberry72’s actual sockpuppet master User:Giubbotto non ortodosso, both pop music vandals and genre warriors who like to change genres to any musician/album/single to pop (their preferred genre) and quote that the other genres are unsourced, both are from the same place, Italy and ironically they’ve been blocked before as a check user confirming it was GNO in the past, but Blueberry made up a phoney story that they’re not GNO and evaded their block. Please can you indeff block the vandal? 86.187.163.254 ( talk) 10:00, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Reporting Isaacsorry

This editor has been problematic for making unconstructive or questionable edits, such as these [1] [2] [3]. This editor has warned by multiple editors in the past, such as Ss112, [4] JesseRafe, [5] Akhiljaxxn, [6] Laser brain, [7] SNUGGUMS, [8] and Isento. [9] [10] [11]

The talk page history clearly shows the editor has been ignoring these warnings, and still making these unhelpful edits for several months now. The editor also keeps using VisualEditor which mess up the article's format like this. I tell them at my talk page to not use that tool but continue anyway. This kind of behavior should be unacceptable. TheAmazingPeanuts ( talk) 11:56, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

question re template for user welcome

hi. could you please let me know which welcome template you used, for your welcome at User_talk:Tackyfriar? I use Twinkle for these templates, so I'd like to know which template this was for future use. please ping me when you reply. thanks!!! -- Sm8900 ( talk) 17:35, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Sm8900. Unfortunately the template is not in the Twinkle menu, so I have to add it manually. It is {{Welcome to Wikipedia}}. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 17:37, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
ok, that sounds fine. by the way, did you know you can customize the Twinkle menu, and add ANY templates to it that you want? I have already done so for all WP:Teahouse welcome templates, and use them frequently. if you want to do so, you should go to preferences, then click the link to view the preferences for Twinkle. let me know if you might like some more info on how to do so. thanks!! -- Sm8900 ( talk) 17:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
@ Sm8900: I was not aware of that. If you want to go ahead and add this template to the Twinkle menu go right ahead. My tech skills largely topped out with the electric typewriter. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 17:45, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
lol gotcha!! I would be glad to; however, actually each user has to customize their own individual Twinkle menu themselves. to do so, click "Preferences" then click "gadgets." the text of the checkbox for Twinkle has a link to "preferences" at the end of it. if you want more details, I would suggest you ask at the Help Desk. they would probably be quicker and more clear than me, for explaining the full set of steps. I hope that's helpful. thanks!! -- Sm8900 ( talk) 17:49, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Tim96144

Hi AO. I was wondering if you could warn the user Tim96144 about tandem-using his registered account and his IP address to edit, as I have warned him about this to evidently no avail. He has previously stated he is located in Taiwan, and created a redirect as his user account the other day, then proceeded to expand the article using his IP address while logged out 20 minutes later. I have asked him numerous times to stop tandem using accounts like this, and he obviously has not, and so can no longer claim ignorance of "I didn't know I was logged out" etc. Perhaps he is not doing anything disruptive, but this kind of thing gives the impression it's multiple users doing something on a page when it's only one. Question: ITN Eurovision

First, thanks for the close on this. Second, about the close reason - you wrote that 'consensus will not develop', which is one way of calling SNOW. However, due to time zones, the nomination hadn't been open for very long during normal European waking hours, and in the time it was (the last seven or so comments), it was about 50/50 on support/oppose. I think the Americans oppose would have taken it in the end from the comments given, but it would have been much closer (not an 18 hour SNOW). I don't know what time zone/country you're in, but... well, do you think this is an accurate perception? Kingsif ( talk) 01:40, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kingsif. In my experience 18 hours is not a rapid close and I would definitely not characterize it as a SNOW close. I've been around for a while and I can't recall off the top of my head any nomination that was facing similar levels of opposition after this much time, and then suddenly gained enough support to get posted, UNLESS something unusual occurred that changed the dynamics of the discussion. That said, it's not something I am all that worked up over. If you want to re-open the discussion, go ahead. But I still don't think it's going to fly. Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Ad Orientem, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 ( talk)

Hello, I'm reaching on my own accord in reference to a restriction that you put on Das osmnezz a few years back. You had restricted him to running all new articles through AfC, found here. I don't know all the circumstances around this block or when it was last reviewed, but I think now might be the time to lift this restriction. Over the past few weeks, I've reviewed and approved a few dozen of this users articles and have not seen any that don't easily pass WP:NFOOTY (which seems to be the subject the user is keen on). As such, I would give my blessing (whatever that's worth) on this user to be allowed to directly create articles again. Cheers. Sulfurboy ( talk) 08:35, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Sulfurboy. Thanks for your note. I have noticed a general improvement in their article quality and commented on it recently at their talk page. However, if you take a look at their talk page, you will see a significant percentage of AfC templates are still for declined submissions. For now I am continuing to monitor their content creation and if the trend towards improvement in both quality and meeting our notability guidelines continues I will happily consider lifting their editing restrictions. Unfortunately, I don't think we are quite there yet. Best regards... - Ad Orientem ( talk) 14:54, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Courtesy ping Sir Sputnik. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 15:01, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Not to call out my fellow reviewers, but some seem to be mistakes on their part. Looking at the four declines that currently show on their talk page (I didnt go back and examine beyond that):
1) Draft:Maximiliano Moreira - the only one I'm not sure about as it is now deleted.
2) Andreu Ramos was declined for notability even though they made appearances for a team in the Hong Kong Premier League, it has now been accepted.
3) David Bitsindou was declined for notability even though they made appearances for a team in Veikkausliiga, it is now accepted.
4) Draft:Esteban Goicoechea declined for notability even though they made appearances for a team in Primera B Nacional.
5) Kemal Halat declined for notability, I've now accepted as they made appearances for Turkish Süper Lig.
The latter four all look as if they had reliable enough of sourcing to demonstrate this, or at the very least it passes the AfC criterion of "likely to pass an AfD".
Now I'll be the first to admit, that I believe the inclusion criteria for footballers is way too wide, however the editor seems to have a firm grasp of what qualifies per WP:NFOOTY. I imagine the same story will be seen with any other recent declines. At the very least, I hope we can determine a time in the near future for a re-review, I wouldn't want to see this editor discouraged and also have my own self-serving interest of seeing a decrease to the AfC backlog. Cheers Sulfurboy ( talk) 22:04, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
@ Sir Sputnik: Thoughts? - Ad Orientem ( talk) 22:15, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
First of all, let me back up what Sulfurboy is saying about the rejected submissions. The football notability guidelines are broader than they ought to be, and I get the impression that many reviewers don't realise this. Das osmnezz getting submissions rejected despite them meeting the relevant guidelines has been a recurring theme since the restrictions were first imposed. I wouldn't fault them for it. Besides, the main concern with this editor was always English language competency, not notability. My only real misgiving is that their editing has become very formulaic of late. That's not in and of itself a bad thing; it just makes it difficult to evaluate how much their English has actually improved. You seem to have a better handle on this than I do, since Das osmnezz has largely dropped off my radar in recent months. If you're satisfied that the content of their submissions is adequate, I'd have no objections to the restrictions being lifted. Sir Sputnik ( talk) 01:19, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Sir Sputnik & Sulfurboy Ok. So I went back through his talk page archives to the beginning of the year which is about six months. First I do in fact think there is an improvement in his pages. A higher percentage are getting through AfC and I am not seeing the issues with the inappropriate language (flowery and peacock words and phrases) that almost got him indeffed a few years back. That said, there are still too many drafts being declined for my comfort level. I don't expect perfection. That's not a reasonable standard. And some of the declined drafts were subsequently accepted. But there are still enough declines and deleted drafts that I'm just not ready to lift the editing restrictions... yet. Again though, there has definitely been a noticeable improvement and more of his drafts seem to be passing muster. If this continues I remain open to reviewing his record again in a few months. And while most of his drafts are stubs, I can't ignore the volume of content he has added. (I actually gave him a barnstar a while back for creating more than 500 articles.) So let us hope the trend continues and sometime in the Fall I will have another look with the hope of being able to lift his editing restrictions. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 03:07, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Brumby

Hi! Thanks for taking action at Brumby, that's been a time-sink. I wonder, though, how effective semi is going to be – the disruptive editor is autoconfirmed, so will still be able to edit. The protection will of course stop him using any more socks, but that's about all, I think. On the bright side, there seem to be signs that he is beginning to listen to what others have told him. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers ( talk) 07:49, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Justlettersandnumbers. We don't protect pages to deal with a single disruptive editor. If they continue to edit disruptively, formal warnings should be posted on their talk page. If that doesn't work the next step would be WP:ANI or WP:AIV if their behavior amounts to naked vandalism. Happy editing. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 15:20, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Well, yes, that's why I was wondering why you chose to take that particular action. I'd have thought that something like a partial block from that one article might have been more effective. He's had several warnings, and it's already been at ANI, by the way. Justlettersandnumbers ( talk) 15:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok, I have issued a final warning. If they resume their disruptive behavior let me know and I will indef them. This does appear to have gone on long enough. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 16:59, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Please accept my apologies for cutting across you, Ad Orientem. I saw the continuation at Talk:Brumby and issued an indefinite partial block from the article and its talk page without spotting your final warning. Please feel free to modify my block if you feel it appropriate. Regards -- RexxS ( talk) 18:35, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
@ RexxS: No worries. I was more or less resigned that we were heading for some sort of long term block. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 18:37, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Shenqijing Your editing on Brumby was contrary to talk page WP:CONSENSUS which is what we live and die by. You engaged in edit warring and sock puppetry to pursue your preferred version of the article. You were even blocked for the socking. Frankly I think you are very fortunate not to have been indefinitely blocked given your behavior. As of right now I have serious doubts as to your being here to build an encyclopedia. I strongly advise you to drop the stick and move on to something else before your block becomes site wide. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 23:47, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi David. I do have to admit that sometimes you come up with the most unexpected questions. And on this one, I can't say I have a strong answer. If Iraq is in fact an English word then the answer would be yes. But I don't know if it is. I suggest posting this question on the article talk page in the hopes of getting a more informed answer. Can you please oversight revisions 965172818 and 965173471 under RD2 and in order to not feed the trolls? Thanks. Willsome429 ( say hey or see my edits!) 02:43, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Willsome429. Thanks for your alert to the disruptive editing going on. I have protected the page for a couple of days. The edits about someone being a GF aren't really the kind of stuff that require a revdel. We typically reserve that for defamatory stuff or slurs and the like. They've been reverted and the page is now protected. That should do for now. If this resumes let me know and we can escalate our response as needed. Thanks for all your work. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 02:57, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
The ones I specifically tagged accuse Huddy of being a sexual predator and "rapest". Should've dropped diff links the first time, but here it is. I haven't dealt too much with RevDel outside of copyvios so I'm not 100 percent sure it's RevDel material but it's definitely a serious unfounded accusation. Willsome429 ( say hey or see my edits!) 03:01, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Willsome429, I'm not always up to date on euphemisms... but "stick figure" doesn't normally translate into rapist. I also did see someone named as his gf. Am I missing something here? - Ad Orientem ( talk) 03:05, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Dropped the wrong diff link. I apologize. Double-checked these: [24]. and [25]. Apologize again for the confusion I caused. Willsome429 ( say hey or see my edits!) 03:10, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Willsome429 Bingo! Those are the real deal "serious blp violations." And they got the IP an instant WP:ZT block. And yes I revdeled the edits. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 03:14, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Yesterday

I thought it appropriate to leave a note (now that a new day has dawned) to say that I regret ascribing negative intent to your actions yesterday. It was late at night, and the breaking news article had just come to my attention, and it seemed to cast obvious doubt on the "nobody reliable is making these associations" I was seeing. My verbiage was meant to be sarcastic ("Gee, I wonder why an editor would think this and make this sort of edit?"), and I thought it was so clear what I meant in the moment that I assumed you were trying to shut me down. Taking another look at things this morning, I easily see how you would interpret what I wrote as me making my own insinuation of racism, but last night I didn't see that connection. I appreciate your forbearance, and I also appreciate that you had the foresight to recognize that sanctions might need a community look--something many admins only do after the fact. I hope I didn't cost any hair last night; mine is going snow white rather than gray, but it's also begun slow retreat from my brow. Take care. Grandpallama ( talk) 18:39, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi, regarding deceased American professional wrestler Brad Armstrong I don't think his death cause was ever revealed. Is this an unsolved death or not? Davidgoodheart ( talk) 10:20, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Block evasion follow-up

SPI appears to be swamped. I filed a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/KevinPR82 regarding evasion of an IP block you placed. Since the user has admitted switching between IP and account editing (again), perhaps you can manage the matter. If you think it appropriate, you might consider recommending a CheckUser sweep to see if new accounts were created the either of the two recently used IPs. I didn't think CU was needed, but the elapsed time has me second-guessing myself. I also regret not reading your thoughts on ANI beforehand. BiologicalMe ( talk) 13:08, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry but I'm not sufficiently familiar with this sock master to block them on a WP:DUCK basis. I suggest you open a WP:SPI investigation or contact an admin with the check user tool. Best regards... - Ad Orientem ( talk) 17:14, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

I tell them at my talk page to not use that tool but continue anyway. hi. could you please let me know which welcome template you used, for your welcome at User_talk:Tackyfriar?

Hello, reading the wiki Guidlines of how to approach a dispute, going through due process and presenting evidence and asking questions. I am not edditing the page just asking questions and I think having valid arguments to move this page along. Please explain thankyou. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Shenqijing ( talk) 18:50, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello can you please answer me directly as we need to move this decision on, I am very busy as I am a health professional. Shenqijing ( talk) 23:35, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Sorry I can't be more helpful on this one. - Ad Orientem ( talk) 04:01, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Lil Huddy RevDel

Private wikis and getting help

Hi, I just wanted to know if you know how much private wikis can be seen and if they can come up on search results like yahoo and google. Also do you know where I can find help with creating some? Cryptozoology is something that I might start with as this really intersts me. Davidgoodheart ( talk) 07:09, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi David. This is a subject about which I know almost nothing. I did a quick search and there are two pages here that you might want to look at... Wiki and Wiki software. Beyond that I am afraid I will be of little help as I am not very tech savvy. You may wish to query Oshwah who I believe is well versed in tech and has both feet in the 21st century (unlike some other people). - Ad Orientem ( talk) 17:46, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Since we're here (and thank you for your assistance at Sambucus), would it be at all possible if I could ask if you could ratchet up the autoconfirmation at List of legendary creatures by type to semi-protection, and block 220.240.40.60 ( talk + · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser ( log)), which is being used by an IP-hopping vandal to evade his blocks at other IPs?

Unsolved death?
