Eqpyt, Ohio

Thanks, but I am simply applying the nom's own standards (not Wikipedian) which he uses in order to remove East Cobb from the Cobb County template by removing Egypt from its respective template. I am condident East Cobb will not be deleted as it has been sufficiently referenced. However, regardless of its status as an AfD, there is a loose standard for listing unincorporated communities in a County template, and East Cobb meets those standards more than Egypt, Ohio. If Egypt has earned a place under its template, than so has East Cobb (as long as it survives its AfD). No reference has been made to what Wikipedia uses to determine how an unincorporated community earns a spot on a County template. The nom is creating his own, and it really isn't fair.-- Mmann1988 ( talk) 22:25, 3 October 2010 (UTC) reply

  • OK 28bytes I followed your admonition and put lots more cites on the What Men Know deletion page. Thank you for showing an interest. so far others, like Voceditore just hopped in and deleted my John Waters Irish Times cite/link in an attempt to hide it from anyone else I guess. It was definitely not above board and she led the charge to delete my personal page in April. This person has a vendetta against me and I think she should recuse herself from this dispute. But Lew and I will follow what you say to the T if you help us figure out what is needed for this entry. Lew wrote a beautiful synopsis, which was cut down to one sentence, and they cut that out claiming it was not cited. I don’t get it. We are supposed to paraphrase reviewers so you don’t have copyright hassles? Is that it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.234.207.192 ( talk) 06:05, 6 October 2010 (UTC) reply
Thanks Mr. Zubaty. I appreciate you providing those links, that's exactly the sort of thing we need to have to gauge the notability. I know this whole thing must be very frustrating... trust me, I've had articles that I've written and cared about deleted, and it's no fun, but I do hope you'll understand that if the article isn't kept, it's only a reflection of the amount of independent coverage your book has received, and it's nothing personal at all. I'll follow up on the deletion discussion page with some further thoughts. 28bytes ( talk) 06:17, 6 October 2010 (UTC) reply
For the record, at no time did I remove any of the links to the sources. I removed copyright infringing text only and left the links to the sources. [1] Lew Loot did not write a synopsis, he pasted in verbatim chunks of copyright material from this source which had to be removed per WP:COPYVIO. Likewise, the excessive verbatim quote from The Irish Times which exceeded the fair use limits for non-free text. I had warned Lew Loot about this when he had first created the article in the sandbox and provided links to the relevant guidance pages on his talk page. I strongly urge both Mr. Zubaty and Lew Loot to read those guidance pages. Voceditenore ( talk) 06:58, 6 October 2010 (UTC) reply

Succession boxes

Please see the broader discussion at WT:CHARTS#Succession boxes. This has been ongoing for over two months and even back to the end of last year and you are invited to take part. I have directed everyone who has contacted me or reverted me to this discussion, and I have yet to be warned a second time by anyone.

Here is a link to a summary of issues that I brought up when trying to come up with a compromise for succession boxes back in March: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums/Archive 35#Proposal for use of succession boxes for #1 albums/singles. Below are a number of comments culled from the various discussions on similar and other problems people have with them. You can find links to the entire history of the discussion at WT:CHARTS#Consensus on use of succession boxes?.

  • "A labyrinth of every imaginable component chart and airplay chart"
  • "A succession box where neither the predecessor nor the successor has an article isn't a useful navigation tool"
  • "Succession boxes are not to present information. They are not to document the number of weeks on a chart. ... They are a navigational tool."
  • "Succession boxes [relating to music articles] are an indiscriminate collection of information as "Excessive listing of statistics" that is not notable to the subject"
  • "They are a "navigation tool" to other number one "Songs" and Albums that really have no connection with the page they are on."
  • "The information contained in the boxes is often unsourced (particularly the dates) and relies on other Wiki articles to determine what came before and after the article topic on the charts."
  • "People are posting incorrect dates concerning the time frame that a song is at #1 on Billboard's charts"
  • "We don't have to include the nav-boxes so people can find this information, since we have all these lists"

In addition to the above, I see them as unnecessary and redundant, especially since I am providing links to lists of #1 charts, which still might be a bit excessive. Thanks. -- Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars ( talk) 20:51, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply

Thanks for the reply. I did see the WT:CHARTS#Succession boxes discussion, and I actually agree with some of the bullet points you cited above, especially #2, 6 and 7. Are you open to compromise? For the mainstream rock #1s that I've been working on, there's usually (but not always) no more than 2 of these succession boxes, which wouldn't seem to run afoul of the first objection. I'm happy to source any of these if you think that's needed; that information should be in the article references already (typically Joel Whitburn books), and if it isn't, it ought to be added. 28bytes ( talk) 21:03, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply
I really believe the compromise was by including links to lists of the #1 song charts, which I find much more useful rather than a succession of songs. It provides more information for those interested the chart(s), and it provides consistency for all song/album articles rather than some having succession boxes and some not having them. -- Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars ( talk) 22:43, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply
Well, I was thinking more along the lines of letting the succession boxes stay provided their contents were properly sourced and they had article links to the "before" and "after" songs. I appreciate that the "list of #1 song" charts have useful info, but those links are already part of the box, at least the ones I've been working with. Personally, I think the "before" and "after" info provides useful context. 28bytes ( talk) 22:55, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply
If someone's going to make the case for the Hot 100, I can understand it, but even with that then you'd have to except UK #1s and Australia #1's then why not Canada and Germany and so forth that have reasonable sources. In the case of the mainstream rock chart, it's one that's becoming obsolete with the introduction of the Rock Songs chart, so how can you do that but not Pop songs, R&B, Country, Dance, etc. Now, it starts all over again. And these days, there's a good chance songs will top three Billboard rock charts (rock, mainstream, and alternative), so we're going to have to have boxes for all of them. The important thing to note for that particular song is that it reached #1, which is going to be stated in the article and/or a chart table, and that should suffice. Linking to previous and succeeding song articles that have nothing to do with the specific article just seems superflous. -- Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars ( talk) 23:17, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply
I see your point, and I do agree they can appear superfluous and excessive if there are a bunch of them filling the page. I think the best thing to do at this point is to make my case over here and see what others think. Incidentally, what I'm suggesting there is partially based on your earlier proposal, which struck me as pretty reasonable. 28bytes ( talk) 23:40, 27 October 2010 (UTC) reply

List of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics

Hello, I saw that you had the list of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics moved to your userspace. I took the opportunity to fix some vandalism, and to remove the Fatboy Slim song "Kalifornia", because its title does appear in the lyrics. JIP | Talk 13:40, 4 October 2010 (UTC) reply

Thanks. Getting rid of vandalism is always appreciated! I wouldn't worry too much about the formatting, though; right now I'm planning to build an entirely new list article using the userspace lists as a guide. It will need sourcing, which I'm working on gathering now. 28bytes ( talk) 13:50, 4 October 2010 (UTC) reply

DYK Query

Regarding my recent nomination of W. J. Gordy, surely, if an article hasn't been featured yet, it can be seen to be eligible (seeing as there are no strict rules)? The date doesn't really make a difference for such a minor article (it may as well have been created yesterday, you see), and this is the best way I can think of for this article to gain attention.
