That's interesting - maybe that has changed now since Shinui left the gov't. I remember one of the last times I was allowed out of Ben Gurion airport where the 'security' always pulls Palestinians aside into special search and interrogation rooms. The guy being searched next to me was (what I assumed) Ethiopian with a large Star of David necklace. I thought it odd that they would be searching a Jew, as it's usually only us who are pulled into these rooms, but then an Israeli friend of mine told me about some of the problems with racism against black Jews. What exactly is it that you find hard to understand about the sentence in question? If it is the term "hamzated verbs", this is standard English usage to refer to verbs including the letter hamza. Granted, one is only likely to come across it if one reads about the Arabic language, but this article is about the Arabic language. Palmiro | Talk 19:03, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Since that wasn't your problem, I'm not sure what it was that made the sentence difficult foryou to grasp. I have rephrased it: does that help? Palmiro | Talk 19:05, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Oh. It's simply an example of the phenomenon described. اكل (akala, eat) is a hamzated verb; in fusha the imperfect is آكل; in Palestinian Arabic the imperfect is pronounced, roughly speaking, "bokel". Palmiro | Talk 19:09, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
The 'b' is an imperfect marker in most spoken Arabic dialects in the Mashriq. Classical Arabic has different endings for the indicative, subjunctive and jussive imperfect. These endings don't exist in spoken Arabic dialects, so in these dialects there are some markers that distinguish time, while the unmarked form is only used in contexts equivalent to the subjunctive, e.g. after other verbs or verbal particles. Here in Syria, for example, the general imperfect marker is 'b', the 'right now' imperfect roughly equivalent to the English progressive present is '3am', and the future marker is 'ra7' or just '7' (excuse the numbers, 3 is 3ain and 7 is haa', I don;t have unicode close at hand). I couldn't swear to how exactly it works in Palestinian Arabic but the system is certainly similar. Palmiro | Talk 19:16, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

Tomer, while I can understand your frustration with some of Witkacy's behaviour, your comments on the administrator's noticeboard are inappropriate.
I would encourage you to rephrase or remove them, lest someone inadvertently draw the mistaken conclusion that you're attempting to bait Witkacy into some sort of personal conflict or inadvisable action. Your remarks are stretching the limits of Wikipedia's policy on civility, and brush the border of our policy on personal attacks. TenOfAllTrades( talk) 12:29, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
I already know how Witkacy conducts himself and I'm not happy about it. As far as Gdańsk is concerned, the city was under the rule of Polish kings in the period of time so the name of the place should be Gdańsk not Danzig. It seems that in the vote you mentioned the argument that it was mostly populated by Germans prevailed, but this argument is in contradiction with the historical reality as until the end of 18th century there were practically no nation-states. Alx-pl D 13:02, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi I noted your input in the Jewish lists so hopefully this will interest you. I started making a few new categories: Category:Jews in music, Category:Jews in science, and Category:Jews in the visual arts, however User:Lulu_of_the_Lotus-Eaters has nominated all these for renaming due to his aversion to the phrase "Jews in". The reason I created the Jews in music category was because I knew Category:Jewish musicians and Category:Jewish music existed but mainly covered yiddish/religious music. I have persuaded Lulu to change the name of the current category to Jewish classical musicians (as this basically covers the people I had added to it) but I still feel a category such as Category:Jews in western music needs to be the parent category of all classical, pop, jazz, rock, musical sub categories to avoid confusion with yiddish music, Klezmer etc. I would appreciate your views on this here Talk:List_of_Jews#Jewish_categories Arnie587 23:21, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Saw your notes on this article...agree with the 'etiquette' word being inappropriate, have manded to legislation.
On the issue of the laws about intermarriage, this was in fact true in many southern US states right up until the 1960s. Refer to the site [3] for specific laws in each state.
As for the Western examples of genocide or apartheid, I think the European's treatment of Indigenous Australians can be characterised as both. In fact, a National Inquiry found that the separation of children from the families did constitute genocide (intention to destroy a group of people).

I would be grateful if you could reconsider your vote on these as the previous vote was only on categories which link Jewishness by country not by occupation. The vote did not deal with any categories such as Jewish philosophers or Jewish classical musicians, therefore to claim there was a consensus to delete these previously is misleading. I really do not see how these two categories are at all frivolous. However, I do agree that Category:Jewish baseball players is too specific, and Category:Jewish American actors is unworkable as people may identify as Jewish as well as quite a few other ethnicities so could end up in multiple variations of these nationality-ethnicity-occupation categories. It was intentional, because at the time I removed the Ethnologue link from the "external links" section, an Ethnologue link was built into the language infobox template. We seem to have a problem with the set of articles on Reform Judaism. Did you know that Reform Jews accept Jewish law and tradition as binding and normative, much like Orthodox Jews do? Neither did I, probably because such a claim is patently false. Did you know that Halakha is not Jewish law, and the customs of other groups, like the Samaritans and Karaites is "Jewish law", and that the practice of Reform Jews is also "Jewish law"? Therefore - by this linguistic trick - one is forced to claim that Reform Jews are observant of Jewish law! This kind of linguistic trickery is propaganda, and not worthy of an encyclopedia entry which tries to openly and honestly describe what people believe and practice.
I am afraid that a couple of otherwise well-meaning contributors have fallen for this misleading wordplay. In fact, most Reform rabbis throghly agree with me. Most Reform rabbis that I have spoken to explicitly admit that Reform teaches that Jewish law and tradition (i.e. halakha) is not normative (to be taken upon yourself as binding) - and most admit that Reform Judaism actively discourages certain elements of halakha.
For some time it has been a settled useage on Wikipedia that (a) halakha is often usefully translated as "Jewish law and tradition", or something like that, (b) the practice of Karaites and Samaritans is not usefully or accurately described as "Jewish law"; they are quite different groups! and (c) Reform Judaism does not accept that halakha is normative. Yet in the last few weeks two Reform apologists have begun rewriting these basic facts to make Reform look as traditional as Orthodox, which is both a diservice to actual Reform Judaism and to Orthodox Judaism. It also will confuse and mislead the vast majority of people who read our articles. Please take a look at the discussion. 00:14, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

However, when I googled it, I found a reference that Gunnar Flakstad (the latest insertion) had indeed witnessed bodies being piled up with a bulldozer. In short, both names make sense in the article, but why one was substituted for the other I have no idea. Maybe its because the anon knew that the former is dead and wanted another person's name in that sentence. It is weird, but not factually incorrect, evidently. Thanks again.

Please, come give your edits to the page. I think the History part is lacking, and that I might not have been as egalitarian as I could've (genders and sects).
Use of the Psalms in Jewish ritual - Jewish person -> Jew. After all, a Jewish person is a Jew... :-p
Sorry, been on edge since the Jewish texts thing. I've seen a couple of times where Jewish would be linked to either Jew or Judaism and someone would come along and change it to the other one. I was being a little too guarded in this case :D

As you see I don't agree with the policy (similarly as Witkacy does), but despite of that I allowed myself to defend (unlike him) its current formulation Talk:Georg Forster#Nassenhuben/Mokry Dwór reverts. Alx-pl D 14:12, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
Well, I think one must fight with compromises that are against the reason. And of course, this can be only done by collecting arguments and educating people about them. It takes a long time though :-( and people are impatient. Me too, but I prefer to exercise my patience and see people get educated. Alx-pl D 21:48, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits to the article, particularly the island/islands muddle I got myself into without even noticing. If I may offer a defence, even though I know they are islands, those that work on or with them tend to refer to them as "The Island". As for Objection, your Honor: unsourced idle speculation! It appears the sole purpose of this sentence is to include a link to the Cabrillo article! my source was the same source as whole article, the excellent The Farallon Islands, Sentinels of the Golden Gate, by Peter White. I guess, given the fog in the area, that you could sail past them without seeing them, though. Sabine's Sunbird 14:59, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
I received the following query from a Tatar editor with whom I've worked on some articles:
I'd like to help him out but I don't have a Hebrew-typing program and I don't have the knowledge of Unicode necessary to do this efficiently; in any case my knowledge of day-to-day conversational Hebrew will probably not help much in a scholarly encyclopedia piece.

I think I'm going insane. I base this observation on the fact that I am writing to you to point out that I think I'm going insane. Surely no more proof is required? But conversely, although the possibilty exists that I am insane, all other indications would seem to suggest that I am not, in fact, conkers, which throws the whole argument into disarray.-- Xiph o n 14:19, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Tomer: Kindly take a look at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 November 25#Sub-Categories of Jewish people. This area needs some cut-backs again. IZAK 03:42, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi. I noticed you created the article on the Puka-Pukan language. Would you be able to tell me where its Ethnologue profile is? I can't seem to find it. Thanks. -- Hottentot 02:59, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
It was intentional, because at the time I removed the Ethnologue link from the "external links" section, an Ethnologue link was built into the language infobox template. Then they changed the language infobox template so it no longer has a link to Ethnologue. And I was too lazy to go through and add the Ethnologue links back to all the pages I removed it from.

Thanks for the note - both individuals are Norwegian diplomats (or were, since Ane-Karine Arvesen has died), and both had visited the camps and provided first-hand accounts.
