If I don't respond, it is because I keep getting trapped spending a lot of time on Wikipedia. I have had received several promotions and a much expanded role at work, and can't afford to get sucked in. So, anything you've seen me do recently, was because something was on Wikipedia that bothered me, or because I was simply creating stubs and skeletal outlines.
Being a stubber might make people upset because it creates more blanks but, for me, it's a way of putting out there a bookmark for another time, and telling people "hey, this is what I want to see in this spot." My apologies.

Greetings. I removed a few lines from the African-American template, which many of us have commented is too long at the present time. My edit summary was: "In my opinion, the African-Americans in China stub isn't developed enough to be included, and the Africa template isn't technically applicable."

- But just because it is underdeveloped was not a reason to take it out ... the AA template itself is still underdeveloped ...

- To tell you the truth, it started off as a learning thing, to make sure I read everything that people consider the most notable and major topics. If I put what I knew up, and people thought I was missing something, they'd add. If I thought something was huge, and people took it off, I'd see that I was wrong.
- That, and it was an experiment to see how much a template is subject to change. I'm happy to see that it's stayed brief, and pretty much on topic since I "released" it. Few pages have kicked it off. Things that I thought would blow up (like history, and organisations) didn't. I think it took Quadell an hour after my first post to make any changes. I think it'd be interesting to see people that visit and don't make changes.
- I said on the Discussion page that I based it off of Template:Jews and Judaism sidebar . . . my first page that I ever edited was Sanhedrin. I remember thinking it was so dramatic when someone put that template on the page. Not knowing anything about templates . . . I thought that my activities on a page that hadn't had many changes had caused someone to work hard and create such an organised piece. A little self-centered, I guess. But, I wanted to do the same for some other newbie Wikipedian.
- One more thing. I like how you put the template down at the bottom of the references and notes section of African American literature. In my opinion, you should do this for all uses of the template. This way the template doesn't distract from the lead and start of the article (like it does with Buffalo soldier) but if someone is looking for more info they can easily find it. I don't know if Wikipedia has a style on the use of these templates but most of the articles I've seen with them don't put them at the top.-- Alabamaboy 23:59, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I didn't start doing that until later in the game, when it started messing with the format of pages that had pictures on them. I don't want it to go right at the bottom, like the Template:Africa, but I do see how adding it contextually is better in many cases. The more pages it's on, the more exposure, the more likely I'll be able to recruit someone like yourself to do some of the finer tweaks. So, having at the top of a page doesn't hurt that cause.

African American lit
If you have a second, could you check out a discussion I'm involved in at Talk:African American literature. This German guy has an issue with how African American literature is structured b/c the article describes Black literature while following the history and politics of African Americans. To him, bringing history and politics into a literature article is wrong b/c the article should totally focus on art, form, aesthetics. I've already pointed out that Black lit is tied in with the history and experiences of Black people in this country. I also showed that Literature of the United States, English literature, Tamil literature and so on follows the basic sociological and historical framework that this article uses. However, I don't think any of this is going to convince him. I get the feeling that he would rather discuss Black literature without actually having to mention Black people at all. - Although sie's harsh, I'm not convinced that sie's trolling. It confuses me though, that sie'd be so active on the talk page . . . when I don't see any edits in the history by this person. And, if they read the nomination, and the fact that the article was posted on the Main Page, their questioning the intent of the article seems odd. So, I'm left doubtful either way.
- So long as it gets resolved, don't take it hard. I'm more of an editing and function person on the site than a writer. You've done a lot to create the article, and keep it going. Hang in there.

- Thanks for your help at mediation. I just found out the guy only has 62 edits (mostly minor) and that frustrates me even more. I also feel that I've agreed with almost all of his points, already made some of the related changes and stated my willingness to go along with others, all without him compromising at all. As such, I will not agree to restructuring the article or deleting major parts of it. If this goes to official mediation, I think I will simply drop the article from those I edit. I mean, it doesn't seem fair that one editor who has done so few edits can override the work and critiques by myself and dozens of others, especially of an article that only recently reached FA status. It probably is a fair use, actually. Here's why.
When the courts look at whether the use of an image counts as " fair use" or not, they look at four factors:
- Purpose and character. Since Wikipedia is a non-profit encyclopedia and used for educational purposes, this test is passed easily. All images on Wikipedia pass this first test.
- Nature of the copied work. Since this is a movie poster, it would seem that its value is in being widely available, not in being restricted. (A piece of art in a gallery might have worth based on the fact that so few people have seen it, but this work gains value by people seeing it.) Fair use is easier to claim for advertisements, and a movie poster is in some ways an advertisement for the movie. So in my opinion, it passes this test as well.
- Amount and substantiality. This is a small, low-resolution copy of the poster. It would be impossible for someone to reproduce the poster in detail from this jpg. (Big, high-quality images are more difficult to defend as fair use.) So it passes this test.
- Effect upon work's value. Including the poster image in an encyclopedia could not make the work less valuable. If anything, it will increase interest in the movie and make the copyright more valuable. So it passes this final test too.

- Thanks for the invite. It looks like a fine start. I appreciate you basing it off of my Template:African American topics sidebar; it's a fine compliment. Please note my response to helping, at the top of this page. My fertile Wiki adding days have passed. I'm mostly a nitpicker now.
- My wife is African-American and my original intention with the AA template was to see if anyone could bring up some major historical, cultural or otherwise pertinent information that I didn't already know. In short, I viewed it as a learning experience to go through and organize what I already knew, and have people feed me links to tell me what I should be studying. Perhaps if you approach your template in the same way: what would someone who knew very little about Latin-American history and culture need to know, in order to get a well-grounded understanding? What pages already exist that someone had the bias to write? Go through the lists and see if there is maybe some commonality of subject matter, that could become a group? When I first started the template, I made it bohemouthly long, with no right to be on a page. I then just started posting it everywhere for people to get upset enough to come edit. "Sorry about the long letter, I didn't have the time to write a short one." – Mark Twain Don't start out trying to write a summary; it's self-defeating.
- I note from your talk page that there might be some controversy on it's existence. But, noting from your boycott stuff, I see that you're not so adverse to some controversy :)
- I know that you didn't ask for preachy advice, you asked for editing assistance. I had extreme success with my first template: Template:African American topics sidebar, but when I edited Template:Jews and Judaism sidebar people came and vandalized it and it got locked down, and then when I created Template:Jewish texts people took it off all the pages where it was posted, and called me a Jew for Jesus because I linked to parallel pages Hebrew bible and Old Testament rather than censoring the latter (though I noted "Christian Perspective," I guess that wasn't good enough). Still not quite sure how I deserved that one. So, templates are tricky. I'd say I only have a 33% success rate.

Greetings Jndrline. I noticed that you transclude your signature from User:Jndrline/sig. I would recommed that you transclude it from User:Jndrline/sig.js. By saving your signature as a .js file you effectively block potential vandals from being able to modify it and vandalize all of the pages where you've signed. - Effect upon work's value. Including the poster image in an encyclopedia could not make the work less valuable. If anything, it will increase interest in the movie and make the copyright more valuable. So it passes this final test too.

- Thanks for the invite. It looks like a fine start. I appreciate you basing it off of my Template:African American topics sidebar; it's a fine compliment. Please note my response to helping, at the top of this page. My fertile Wiki adding days have passed. I'm mostly a nitpicker now.
- My wife is African-American and my original intention with the AA template was to see if anyone could bring up some major historical, cultural or otherwise pertinent information that I didn't already know. In short, I viewed it as a learning experience to go through and organize what I already knew, and have people feed me links to tell me what I should be studying. Perhaps if you approach your template in the same way: what would someone who knew very little about Latin-American history and culture need to know, in order to get a well-grounded understanding? What pages already exist that someone had the bias to write? Go through the lists and see if there is maybe some commonality of subject matter, that could become a group? When I first started the template, I made it bohemouthly long, with no right to be on a page. I then just started posting it everywhere for people to get upset enough to come edit. - I know that you didn't ask for preachy advice, you asked for editing assistance. I had extreme success with my first template: Template:African American topics sidebar, but when I edited Template:Jews and Judaism sidebar people came and vandalized it and it got locked down, and then when I created Template:Jewish texts people took it off all the pages where it was posted, and called me a Jew for Jesus because I linked to parallel pages Hebrew bible and Old Testament rather than censoring the latter (though I noted "Christian Perspective," I guess that wasn't good enough). Still not quite sure how I deserved that one. So, templates are tricky. I'd say I only have a 33% success rate.

- I didn't respond because I wasn't that dedicated to it. I really wanted to shortcut work I don't want to do myself of taking a chunk of a page and put it on the appropriate page, reformatting accordingly.

Greetings Jndrline. I noticed that you transclude your signature from User:Jndrline/sig. I would recommed that you transclude it from User:Jndrline/sig.js. By saving your signature as a .js file you effectively block potential vandals from being able to modify it and vandalize all of the pages where you've signed.
