I've sent the article to peer review with very little feedback. The only thing mentioned was to increase the lead. However, I think it still needs some expanding. No biggie, I had no way to know the article was being edited at that moment. I think the article is a bit on the short side for an FA, but I still have to go through much of it. The way I see it there are two options. One, you can add references in the article text like so... ^[1] See [1]

Or we can convert the references to {{ref|name}} (see Cinema of Mexico and Sino-German cooperation ::(1911-1941)). Then there would be {{note|name}} in the footnotes section. I'm also not too familiar with citing sources, so I'm learning too! :) Gflores ^Talk 18:41, 7 February 2006 (UTC) reply

If a paragraph has too many sentences, it becomes a block of text. The way to fix it is to divide big paragraphs into smaller paragraphs. Smaller paragraphs make reading articles more manageable and exciting looking. Also, it's harder for the reader to get lost. If you want more information, you could ask the WP:Reference Desk about why paragraphs should only have few sentences, and not have big blocks of text. Is there some convention on Wikipedia that prefers suffixes outside of the linking markup? For example [[Cuba]]n instead of [[Cuba|Cuban]]? I saw that you tidied Oscar Hijuelos, and I've been doing mostly all piped links when the title of an article I want to link to doesn't correspond to the text. The short answer is "yes"; the relevant document is Wikipedia:How to edit a page#Links and URLs:

San Francisco also has public transportation.

Examples include buses, taxis, and streetcars.

• Endings are blended into the link.
• Preferred style is to use this instead of a piped link, if possible.

Commas

The "rules" of punctuation are both complex and flexible (and there are regional variations). There are two main reasons for the placement of a comma: logic and speech patterns. In this case, for example, the two parts of the sentence are unconnected (his living in New York and his contact with a publisher); strictly speaking they should be separated by a semi-colon (if not made into two distinct sentences), but the rhythm of speech is such that the pause between them would likely be short (largely because the two parts are short, and a longer pause would feel unnatural), so a comma feels better. There has to be something, though.

Teachers, faced with the task of giving pupils rules, tend to oversimplify and rigidify (I'm afraid that teachers are also not always as kowledgeable as their air of confidence implies; I've seen teachers "correct" good English to bad, while ignoring obvious mistakes). In this case, the teacher seems to have decided to simplify matters by giving a nice straightforward rule, but the rule is only part of the story.

Hey Rockero, saw that you posted the Penitentes on the project. I knew that their jump to wiki was inevitable. I am originally from a small town where los hermanos are very active, and while never a member myself, count them among my people. A lot of the scholarship on them is pretty gringo-centric, factually inaccurate, and in my opinion exploitive of a sect of humble Hispanos who just want to worship God in their way according to their traditions.

PNG is preferred over JPG because PNG is non-lossy, so more information is kept. The quality of the picture is good though, and after going through JPG, this particular PNG is already "lossy", but I normally just upload images as PNG anyways. -- Vizcarra 01:47, 12 February 2006 (UTC) reply

"Rochester", played by Eddie Anderson was the valet character on the old Jack Benny radio and TV shows. Previously, someone had implied that Rochester Drive or Avenue or whatever it is was named for "Rochester". Someone else reverted it and said Rochester Drive is a major street and was not named for Jack Benny's "Rochester", which I couldn't say for sure but it sounds reasonable. I added it back, with the disclaimer that it's an amusing coincidence. The name "Cucamonga" is strongly connected with the Benny shows, so I think it's fair to point out that coincidence, but I need to explain what it's about, for the younger generations. Truly awsome job on the Tijerina article. Great work. I went ahead and gave it some preliminary edits/additions. I'll add to it a little at a time. FYI, my primary source is "The Contested Homeland: A Chicano History of New Mexico" edited by Erlinda Gonzales-Berry and David R. Maciel. It's a great book, and I highly recommend it. I need you to clarify something in it, though, as my source is not as detailed on this: The details on the "Trial and Incarceration" section -- are those from his first trial (post raid) or the second trial (after the judge denied his double jeopardy defense)? Are you sure the wiki can't make the difference between an all capital acronym and a non capitalized name? in either case, a disambig page might still come useful, but the number of articles to be disambiguated is small enough, and they are so different that little confusion seems possible. Please do as you deem best. Hi - I'd be glad to work with you on the Molotov article. It definitiely needs to be improved. I live in the midwestern US, so am certainly not an expert - just a big fan and, though new to Wikipedia, interested in improving pages like this. And I agree that raprock isn't the best (or complete) designation, but the previous version had "Metal/Hip-Hop" which I didn't think was a good fit either. Hey Rockero: Long time no talk, Hermano! I just wanted to say hi and what's up?

I'm gonna add Arturo Frias to the project's page. In addition, I'm thinking of the next Hispanic or Latin American country to which begin a WikiProject for. Depending on whether they actually have a project already or not, it could be Spain, Brazil, Costa Rica, or any other one, who knows. I just want to unite all Hispanic writers here so that we can all benefit by learning about our history as Hispanics. As member of the Mexican-American project and a Puerto Rican, I feel priviledged to have learned about such topics like the Comision Femenina, Chicano artists and others. I think the same honor should be extended to all other Hispanics as we learn about our culture or race (La Raza) and can feel proud to the core about who we are. After all, with the way we are portrayed by the media here (the drunken Mexican, the drug sniffling Puerto Rican, the prostitute Dominican Republic girl you know how it is), who else but ourselves to back each other up and feel proud of who we are, and teach the world who we really are!

I'm glad to hear you're working hard on the Chicano WikiProject. I can create all Hispanic wikiProjetcs I want to here, but one thing you can always count: I will always help you, Joaquin and los demas in our Chicano project.

I've been busy too. I was chosen as a freelance writer for this website and I am required two weekly articles. You can check out the page, Im credited under my real name there, that is, Antonio Santiago. This week, I explored Marco Antonio Barrera's future options as well as Manny Pacquiao's life. One thing I like about that site is that there you can actually express your opinion since it's a magazine-website. Another is they pay me airline, hotel and fight tickets when there's a boxing event in the Southwest (although I don't get a monthly check or salary for being with them) and also who knows, maybe my article could come out on Ring Magazine some day! (yeah that would be the day lol!)

Life is always going. Went to the doctor on Tuesday, my pressure was at 120/80...lol I guess one CAN be perfect each way..LOL j/k, so everything's fine except all my pains and aches. Esta jodido being 30 (33 actually), lol!

Well, I do see myself sort of like an activist for the Hispanic cause here. This is a great vehicle because we can show the world our real face and not what you typically see in Hollywood (perfect example: Every Colombian smuggling drugs in Commando!) or television. Like you said, wikipedia doesn't encourage activism, but all writers are activists in a way or another. Like, say, medicine, writers there have written about the inventions and benefits that medicine brought us over the years.

Well you and I share something we'd rather be "activists" for Hispanos, definitivamente..lol

hey ese, I saw that there was action on the caló page, and am following it. I was thinking about throwing into the fray, but will see how it all pans out. IMHO, caló is essentially a dead "language" that passed on with the pachucos. I tend to agree that there may have been regional caló differences (águila vs truchas for "look out", for example), but a lot of the words on the caló list were not caló. oh man, I just spent the last like 15 minutes reading the smackdown you got on the Caló talk page. I have a couple of initial (7:45 a.m.) thoughts. First, as I said above, caló as a Pachuco slang went out with the pachucos. It survived and was incorporated into general Chicano slang, of course. Anecdotally, my dad's tíos were pachucos, back in the '50s. He thought they were cool, and talked like them and pretended to be like them, and incorporated a bunch of their words into his speech, but he was never a pachuco, nor could the vatos from his generation claim to be. Influenced by Pachucos, yes, but no longer Pachucos. So when I learned Spanish, I picked up the slang from him, including the caló, but also stuff thats on the caló list that's definitely not caló because it predates the pachucos (like chones). Funny, but this is the rule of thumb I use: did abuelita use the word? If yes, probably not caló. Now, moving on, with the passing of the Pachuco, there has been academic research into the phenomenon. Lists of caló have been made, and regional differences have been noted. So letting random folks add random words screws with the integrity of the page. Anyway that's long and drawn out, but I think you get my point. I was thinking maybe we should have a Chicano slang page, with different sections (caló, prison slang, Mexican slang, spanglish, etc.), and then people could add to the right section. Hey man, like what you did with the page. I'm still relatively new, as you know, so although I can get stuff down, I'm not too good at the formatting. Thanks for the input. One thing I want to run by you is the August 10 name. I had left it as San Lorenzo for a couple of reasons (but don't want to quibble, it stands either way): (a) Dia de San Lorenzo used to be pretty big in New Mexico, given its tie to Spain (for some reason the Spaniards love that Lawrence -- the Escorial is shaped like a grill and everything) and would have been observing the feast in all the towns, and (b) it also happens to be the feast day at Picuris pueblo (still is -- good party), so staging the revolt on that day would have been sort of like staging the Tet offensive on New Year's. That's all too much background for a page on the Pueblo Revolt, though, so I left it as a San Lorenzo with a link to Saint Lawrence. Anyway, hope all's well. Catch you soon. Hey Rockero! What's up, man? I have two questions for you. #1 I found out about an Antonio Santiago Taurin, who was a member of the Mexican Army during the Alamo war, the Mexican-American war. He identified himself as Tejano. Should I include him in the Chicano project? I ask because I know the project is geared more towards Mexican-Americans. #2 I was wondering if you were interested in starting an association or organization of Hispanic wikipedians with me. I would like for all Hispanic wikipedians from the Hispanic world to unite with the purpose of learning about our history, collaborating with each other, enriching our own lifes through knowledge of La Raza and set an example for other Hispanics as to how we shouldn't have anything against one another.

You moved this article to National Polytechnic Institute because "English naming is preferred" which is true... unless "the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form" (see convention) which was the case of the previous name 35,300 English-language Google hits for "National Polytechnic Institute" vs 65,500 English-language Google hits for "Instituto Politécnico Nacional". I understand that the consensus of the Mexico community was not of many but it was of the people who signed up for it and it mostly agrees with your point of view, except for the case of universities since it was decided accordingly with my proposal, unlike many other occasions. It may be uncomfortable to read "Fulano attended (institution with a Spanish name)" but Fulano is highly likely to have 1) A Spanish name/surname and 2) To have a biography that contains many Spanish terms. People who read biographies of Latin Americans is likely to have an interest in Latin American topics and thus likely to be somewhat familiar with Spanish or Portuguese. Hey Rockero: I just got done watching the movie Walkout!. Great story and it touched me being that I would have protested too for the rights to go to college of my fellow Hispanic brothers and sisters. And it was based on the 1968 school riots in L.A.

At the end of the movie I noticed a message about a group known as Los 13 de East L.A., who helped organized the protests. Is there an article about them here?

Honestly, I was expecting it to be from some guy who keeps placing the word "excellent" in Michelle Bachelet's article, a point of view word if there ever was one! Well, I've been giving the idea of forming a Hispanic organization whithin wikipedia for some time now. It would be beneffitial to all of us because that way we could learn more about our race by reading and writing articles about other Hispanic groups or countries. But I think I will follow your advice, talk around with a few people at least and see if the interest grows. I mean, I started a project for Ecuador for example and it turns out only one wikipedian is from there and so far I haven't gotten his answer to whether he wants to collaborate there or not! So it depends whether I find interest. You would definitely be the first one to be invited. Hey that's cool you know some of the extras at Walkout! Many of the extras were actually involved in the real thing. One thing that got to me is that to this day, abuse like that towards Hispanics still exists in one way or the other. My country, for example, all they want us for is our military "power". The good news is independency is steadfastly gaining momentum there and if they vote for it in 2009, we will likely get it because the USA doesn;t want Puerto Rico as a full state; they'd done it already if they did. And one of the inspirations behind the Walkout movement was the fact that Mexican-American soldiers were fighting in Vietnam for the USA yet Mexican-American kids were usually overlooked by universities here and when I heard them talk about it I was like "damn thats messed up!" and it made me think about our situation as Puerto Ricans too, all they want us is for the guys at the military, man. Abuse against Hispanics is still latent. That movie was da bomb and I gained respect for everyone involved in the event. They taught California school people that with Chicanos-and Hispanics- no one messes up! I'm looking forward to read your article about los 13 de East L.A.! Would you consider putting famous Puerto Ricans who believe in the independence idea in the activist section or different section? Rockero: I've been radio-silent because I've been slammed at work, but I plan to get full in again soon. Also, I recently moved and my books are all packed, so my hands are tied. Good job, as always on the Chavez article. I will add my contributions to it in the coming weeks. I've heard rumors of Meztizo participation in the revolt, but have never seen a reputable source for it (I would stand corrected if I saw one). I'm apt to side against it given Popé's intense hatred of ALL things Spanish (e.g. the plow). Moreover, the meztizaje that existed in Colonial New Mexico was not so much between Pueblos and Spanish, but rather between the Spanish and de-tribalized nomadic Indians (Genizaros), and the offspring were raised as Spanish -- given Popé's execution of his own son-in-law for being a suspected Spanish sympathizer, I tend to doubt that Popé would have welcomed genizaro support -- even if it existed. As I said, I'm willing to concede if presented with a verifyable source.

There's enough on the "Revolt of 1837" to stand alone as an independent article; a new article may be in order. I will make the Mora stub my own personal project, as that's my home-town (in case you hadn't figured that out), and may enlist a couple of paisanos to help.
