That picture look nothing like a magazine cover, as you pointed out. It also looks faked. The colors are too intense, the images are unblemished, yet there's an odd square of background vegetation that's reproduced over and over. Commercial ELs

Copied from Wikipedia email

Hi Rockero.

I noticed that you removed the external links that I added.

I browsed the Wikipedia for over an hour reading articles and I saw a few external links that I would consider a commercial site spam, such as the http://www.santa-barbara-flowers.com/ link on the Santa Barbara page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Barbara%2C_California).

My external link contributions, on the other hand, are useful for Wikipedia users who want to see more images of the city.

Many other external links that I have seen on Wikipedia contain advertisements and/or are of a commercial nature but they still contribute in some way to the richness of the Wikipedia user experience. Consider the following examples.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle

http://www.motards-online.com/ - advertisements

http://www.motorvike.com/ - commercial business & advertisements

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis

http://www.tennismates.com/ - advertisements

http://www.tennisthing.com/joining/ - Online tennis coaching commercial membership site

http://www.funlabo.com/tennis/ - "Tennis Games" - advertisements

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari

http://www.forumula1.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=223 - "F1 Discussion Forum" - advertisements

http://www.tuneauto.com/autolinks/Ferrari-ADT456-252.html - "Directory of Ferrari" - advertisements

http://www.allcargarage.com/cars/ferrari/ - "Ferrari Models" - advertisements

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/series/wine/history.html - "A brief history in wine" - advertisements

http://www.winetopix.com/ - "Wine information" - advertisements

http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/journalist/story/0,7792,1590302,00.html - "End of the vine" advertisements

Please get back to me with your thoughts.

Thank You, Paul

I am not the expert when it comes to dealing with external links. I just try to keep commercial external links off the articles that are on my watchlist. Sometimes it is difficult to know whether a link is beneficial or not. But I find that in general, when in doubt, it is best to remove the links. The best place to find out which links are appropriate is Wikipedia:External links#Links to normally avoid. There are some people who dedicate their wiki-existence to seeking out and removing commercial ELs. You seem pretty good at finding them; maybe you'd like to join that squad? Heaven knows we need it. Thanks for addressing me with your concerns.-- Rockero 18:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC) reply
Just because a site has advertisements, it doesn't mean it should be removed! Most sites make very little money from them, the money which they do make goes straight into hosting. To suggest quality sites like the Guardian or Forumula1.co.uk are spammers is absurd and a loss to the Wiki community.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.145.49.18 ( talkcontribs)

Carpa Garcia

Moved from Wikipedia e-mail

Hola Rockero -

Many thanks for editing the site I did for La Carpa Garcia. You did a fantastic job!! In fact, I am hoping you will have time to review it again soon because my mom (Amelia Garcia Brooks - daughter of Manolo) suggested I add some of our Gonzalez relatives so they wouldn't feel left out. I don't know everyone so I am glad she noticed this. You will notice our new info in paragraph 1 and I think the last paragraph. Mom said using the word "flashy" in re: to the costumes probably wasn't appropriate so I changed that a bit.

The family does own the rights to the photos so I'll send the two that were deleted by the orphan bot soon. I am hoping my relatives will add more info as they happen upon this. We had our very first family reunion in June so many of us are just getting to know each other! I sent out a notice to the contacts I have from the reunion but my goodness, there were 150 people there so my guess is we'll see more changes as the months progress.

I wish we would have gotten together when my grandfater and others were still living. In any case, we want to continue to honor our family's wonderful contributions to Mexican-Am theater and entertainment by sharing what we know re: the carpas!

Gracias,

Monica Brooks, brooks@marshall.edu

No problem. 8) Please feel free to continue to add information as you come across it. I'll keep my eye on the article to make sure that the formatting, etc. is OK.
I was hoping you owned the copyrights to the images. They all need to have a "tag", or a template that indicates their copyright status. If you are willing to release them under the terms of the GFDL, let me know and I'll tag them as such. That is your best licensing option, since it will allow the use of the images on other-language Wikipedias.
Thanks again for your contributions, and I hope your family history project is successful.-- Rockero 15:20, 23 June 2006 (UTC) reply

I've heard on both radio and TV that Joe Arpaio is going after illegal aliens. This is part of a backlash that has been going on since the immigration reform protests had started. The illegals are allegedly placed in his Tent City:The Maricopa County Jail until the Border Patrol arrives to remove them. Currently he is being protested, but has said that he will NOT back down, stating that they're here illegally, which is a criminal matter, and he got into office on a "anti-crime" mandate. He is the guy that says that a jail is NOT a (polite) country club. He declared this on FOX News, Rush Limbaugh's radio show, other shows, now he is going after them. Also by the way, the U.S. govt. initiated a forcible repatriation of illegal aliens, incl. going after them. It is called "Operation Return To Sender", which netted a estimated 21,000 illegal aliens. This is also part of the backlash that has been, still is going on. I heard this one on the news real recently. Can any of this be placed in appropriate articles ? Martial Law 00:52, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

The AZ Republic quotes Arpaio as saying, "We might arrest as many as 1,200 in the next year." [1] The figure I heard for ORTS was much more modest, around 2,100. [2] You must have just used one zero too many 8).
If the question of whether or not this activity is part of a backlash from the 2006 United States immigration reform protests weren't one of speculation, I'd encourage you to write an article on it. (However, there is not yet an article on Anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States, if you'd care to write that one, I'm sure the community would appreciate it.) Also, there is nothing about large-scale deportations in the Immigration reduction article, so it can be expanded to include them.
But it looks like the information itself is already on Wikipedia. Arpaio's immigration stance is mentioned actions can go in his article, although it could definitely be improved. The data about Operation Return to Sender is already in that article. Happy wiki-ing ML, -- Rockero 01:31, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

As for the Nuevo Mexicano star, it seemed like every NM history article had at least one or two edits from you, not to mention your excellent articles, like Fray Angelico and Reies Tijerina, on the state. If anyone deserved a Nuevo Mexicano's thanks it was you. (p.s. never heard of the "S.A." = "ese" connection, but it makes me smile -- sort of like Russell Means' take on the word "Indio" meaning "of God", which, even if not technically true, spiritually may be). Rockero, thanks for your comments about this article. I hope you will stick around and contribute more than 2 cents. One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. Re: Manu Chao

Indeed he is performing in the Bay this year; however, this does not change the fact that his performances in the US are rare. A quick Google of the term "manu chao "rare US" concert" yields over one hundred hits, though most are to Lollapalooza press releases. Still, the last US performance I could find mention of was a handful of dates in Los Angeles in 2000 [4], pretty scarce for an artist who tours so extensively.

Help! "Grito de Lares"

We now have somebody who wishes to change the name of The Grito de Lares to Lares Outcry. Please express your opinion here: Talk:Grito de Lares (The Cry of Lares). Thank you. Tony the Marine 00:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Hey, S.A.

Thanks for the star! It made my morning over here, and makes me feel like a full-fledged editor now. Hasta la victoria siempre, carnal. - Murcielago 18:00, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Mexican-American War

Rockero, thanks for your comments about this article. I hope you will stick around and contribute more than 2 cents. I made numerous edits to this article in the past week because, prior to my arrival, the article had a heavy U.S. slant, and I think the Mexican side needs to be understood. Griot 21:05, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

I'll contribute what I can, but war really isn't my thing. I just try to keep an eye on Mexican-American articles for vandalism, etc., but since I have been editing Wikipedia for a while, I have developed a sense for what is appropriate for articles and what isn't and how to handle NPOV disputes, so I'll help out in that regard. I look forward to a productive collaboration.-- Rockero 21:11, 25 June 2006 (UTC) reply

List of Puerto Ricans

One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. I propose that we set up guidelines as to who should be admitted with a clear definition as to the terms "notable" and "fame". I am calling upon the parties interested to express their opinion and to help develope these guidelines. I believe that after we take a vote and reach a consensus, said guidelines should be followed and posted either on the article or the articles talk page. We need your help.

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. - CobaltBlueTony 16:23, 30 June 2006 (UTC) reply
