Thanks for creating the page Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014!! I was shocked to discover that no one had created one sooner, considering the seriousness of what is being alleged. It is definitely worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia and I think you did a good job of creating a comprehensive article. HistoricMN44 ( talk) 13:29, 2 June 2014 (UTC) |

Guild of Copy Editors
May 2014 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 51 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We reduced our article backlog from 2,987 articles to 2,236 articles in May, the lowest backlog total since we began keeping records in 2009! Since at least 300 new articles were tagged during May, that means we copy edited over 1,000 articles in a single month. Amazing work, everyone! Blitz: The June blitz will run from June 15–21. This blitz's theme is Politics. Sign up here. Election: You can nominate yourself or others for the role of Coordinator for the second half of 2014 here. Nominations will be accepted until June 14. Voting will begin on June 15 and will conclude on June 28. Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis. Pine, bringing the 'media viewer' issue to Rfc is a good idea. My only suggestion here is to simplify the layout. Instead of having separate Enable, Disable, and Neutral fields, I would have people simply enter Enable, Disable or Neutral and leave a short comment after the vote. I went ahead and did this before people start voting. Hope you agree. If not, go ahead and revert I guess, but I think we're going to have to try and keep this one simple, otherwise it'll be all over the map. Yes? -- Gwillhickers ( talk) 15:51, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

An alternative image was added with white background. Could you re-evaluate the nomination? Armbrust The Homunculus 11:05, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
I do want to promote Kelvinsong's work, but I kind of wanted to put up this one, which I think is a better illustration by him - the supercell is good, but not the best of his work. Should we do the commmentary on him now with the not-quite-as-good image, or wait on the (presumably inevitable) renom and promotion of the Saturn image?
Also trying to avoid a few images that have appeared a lot - That Sega CD one has appeared at least once, probably twice or thrice in recent months, and hurricanes heavily dominated (and likely will once more dominate) the Wikicup report. Anyway, the selection is good, just going to prune it down a bit; I think you can overdo images even in something like this. =) Adam Cuerden ( talk) 09:15, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.
It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's
Godot13 (
submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C,
Casliber (
submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance
Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles
Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and
Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
The round saw this year's first featured portal, with
Sven Manguard (
submissions) taking
Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to
12george1 (
submissions) and the
2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on
Maya Angelou's autobiographies from
Figureskatingfan (
submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer
Tomáš Rosický from
Cloudz679 (
submissions) and
a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of
Sven Manguard (
submissions).
The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.
note: you will not receive future editions of this newsletter unless you * sign up*; you received this version because you identify as a member of WikiProject MedicineSpotlight - Simplified article translation
Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.
Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:
We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.
What's happening?
I've ( CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.
For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.
There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as
Dutch,
Polish, and
Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not
MEDRS (
Polish,
German,
Romanian,
Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.
Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.
Instructions on how to integrate an article may be found here [156]

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:
We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists.
Matty.007 (
submissions),
ThaddeusB (
submissions),
WikiRedactor (
submissions),
Figureskatingfan (
submissions),
Yellow Evan (
submissions),
Prism (
submissions) and
Cloudz679 (
submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.
There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.
There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer
Godot13 (
submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (
historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion
Cwmhiraeth (
submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA
Isopoda and new GA
least weasel.
Casliber (
submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles
Pictor and
Epacris impressa.
Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. The 2014 WikiCup champion is
Godot13 (
submissions), who flew the flag of the
Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents.
Cwmhiraeth (
submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles.
Casliber (
submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.
A full list of our prize-winners follows:
Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Thanks for all the help, and sorry about the problems. Last week's delay will help us a lot in future, but when it combines with me overdoing it and burning out and getting a cold... then it's problematic. No matter, I think we have one more moderately big week, and then we'll have cleared the Wikicup spike.
I may have told you, but I'll be away from the 27th to the 15th. I'll do what I can. As long as you delete any redirects when moving the FC forwards, Portal:Featured content can deal with a one-week gap, but not a two-week one, and I WILL have more time in the second week. I don't think it'll be too bad, though. Decembers tend to be a bit dead on Wikipedia, so as long as we get as much done before I leave as possible, we should be alright. I should have fixed that annoying bug where the "next" button would lead to draft articles on Signpost pages. It basically grabs the date of the current issue and compares it with the date of the "Next" issue it would be linking to. Little more complicated than that, as I have to convert to Unix time to get a simple comparison, but...
Pine, could you possibly do the FLs for this? I want to finish the last two FPs, then move on to December 3, as if we can have that ready before my holiday, chances are at least reasonably good that we won't run into problems later.

Hey Pine, I've changed your title to make it a bit more engaging and so we don't repeat "Wikimedia" and "education" -- I hope that's alright. I've also changed the template so we don't have a bunch of red links. I left the wikitext links in a hidden comment so it will be easy for you or me to copy/paste them.

Isopoda and new GA
least weasel.
Casliber (
submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles
Pictor and

I had reminded Ed about this, but I take it he's out again? Portal_talk:Featured_content#The_Best_Wikipedia_Has_to_Offer.3F. That half-done column went live, because you left a redirect when moving the page. I'm not really upset about this - it's an easy mistake - but... please, if there's anything going on with featured content, please check Portal:Featured content the moment you publish next time. Pine, thank you so much for your "real life" contributions to the Wikimedia movement, those related to Wikimedia Cascadia and otherwise. Your hard work and dedicated are much appreciated. -- Another Believer ( Talk) 16:52, 7 November 2014 (UTC) |

For publishing the Signpost over the last couple months. Thank you. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 01:39, 15 November 2014 (UTC) |
Hi Pine,
Just to let you know, the Featured Picture File:Frederic Edwin Church - Aurora Borealis - Google Art Project.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on December 9, 2014. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2014-12-09. Thank you for all of your contributions! — Crisco 1492 ( talk) 00:52, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
It's done, publish it. And after I had to write almost the entire thing by myself, don't you dare remove my bad jokes. =P Adam Cuerden ( talk) 02:20, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
It looks like you're online too. I was able to finish my obligations early today so I threw together a short ITM for this week thanks to Everymorning's story and something I'd written last week. It's ready to go. Gamaliel ( talk) 06:05, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Never mind, they're all but done.
