WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 ( submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list ( historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Wales Cwmhiraeth ( submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Scotland Casliber ( submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Per WP:SAMPLE, non-free samples should be no more than 10% of the song or 30 seconds, whichever is shorter. As the song is 2:59, or 179 seconds, 10% (if we round down) would be 17 seconds. Further, the sample should be no more than about 64kbps, but it's currently at 150kbps. J Milburn ( talk) 16:24, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

@ J Milburn: Currently, Audacity malfunctions with my computer, are there any other software that can fulfill the request? Best, jona talk to me 16:39, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

@ Magiciandude: Thank you. BTW, is there any alternative source for archived newspapers on the Internet? Google's news archive is down until further notice and books and magazines are limited for pre-2000s songs/albums. Thanks in advanced, jona talk to me 18:16, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
I use the Resource Request for articles that can be only accessed by subscription (you know like the ones from Newsbank and such). That's how I got the rest of the Lo Nuestro nominations that weren't available online. Erick ( talk) 18:20, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, hopefully they can find any. Best, jona talk to me 23:18, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Regarding List of Selena concert tours references

AJona1992,

It has been brought to my attention that an article you created " List of Selena concert tours" only cites 1 reference and the link is dead. Please consider adding some reliable references. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank You, Gavino Comments & Complaints Contributions 02:54, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing up this issue, I will work on this list this weekend, if not a redirect would be best. Best, .jona talk 21:02, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks buddy! I'll go ahead and look through the article. Best, .jona talk 21:02, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Baila esta cumbia copy-edit request

I've given this a pass over for the GOCE backlog drive. Could you elaborate on what needed to be done? Aside from a few corrections, I didn't see anything substantial, but also don't want to overlook anything that you thought was necessary? LS1979 ( talk) 17:36, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Well, I would like to nominate the article at FAC so it would be nice if someone can look over the article and give a copy-edit before I nominate it at FAC after a successful run at GAN. Best, .jona talk 21:56, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 ( submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth ( submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber ( submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

A full list of our prize-winners follows:

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Yo

I think you might find this and this to be useful. These are Mexican newspapers archives you can use that I'm sure will help you more on Selena articles during her earlier career. They helped me a lot when writing for Romance (Luis Miguel album). Cheers! Erick ( talk) 23:01, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Hey long time no speak how you been? And thanks for those :D Best, jona talk to me 23:08, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Well, off-wiki, not too well. I had surgery a few months ago and even though I'm recovering, some other real-life troubles are affecting my life like money issues. Where have you been? Erick ( talk) 23:10, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
That sucks man, I hope you get better and hope it is not life threatening. I've been busy with summer classes and the fall semester just started today, and back in May my then-friend stole my laptop (among other things) :/ but I'm recovering from my losses - main reason why I've been so distant with Wikipedia. But I do want to come back and continue editing like I had been in the past, only time will tell. How has the Latin music group been lately? I see some new FAs , any new projects? Best, jona talk to me 23:19, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Glad to have you back! As I mentioned before, Romance by Luis Miguel is what I've been working on (it's currently a GAN). Not just for FA, but I'm hoping to make appear as TFA on Valentine's Day. I also did its follow-up Segundo Romance and it's also currently a GAN. Other than that, Clásicos de la Provincia is a work-in-progress on one of my sandboxes since it made vallenato music popular. I also did some research for major Latin record labels (including EMI Latin which is now Capitol Latin). I've been working with Jaespinoza for over a year on the Lo Nuestro Awards. I added some Lo Nuestro nominations Selena received on her awards page, and if you ever want to read any of the articles that I added, I'd be glad to e-mail them to you. Erick ( talk) 23:27, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Glad to be back well am glad to see that you're actively contributing. If you need any help or want/need extra people to work with you, I wouldn't mind jumping in...I don't wanna just do Selena, so holla if you do. That would be great, go ahead and email. Best, jona talk to me 23:33, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

I'll definitely keep on that mind. ;) Did you hear about the RIAA now certifying Latin Digital Songs? They started it last December. Maybe some of Selena's songs will be certified? They kept ranking on the Regional Mexican Digital Songs even years after her passing. Erick ( talk) 23:37, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

No way really? Finally! Eh, prob the only songs that might be cert (btw do you know the certs and requirements?) could be Como La Flor, Amor Prohibido, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, and Dreaming of You. Best, jona talk to me 23:40, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Yep. I included the information about the Latin Digital Songs on the RIAA certification article including the new threshold for Latin albums (they lowered it). I don't think Dreaming of You would be eligible since it's not a Spanish-language song, but it's possible it could received a regular Digital Award. I also made an article for Latin music (genre) that just talks about the word "Latin" is used in the music industry. Is there any other Latin artists you listen to by any chance? Erick ( talk) 23:44, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Well it has some Spanish lyrics lolz but I hear ya. Wow, so 100 streaming means 1 download? I don't get that. How many artists/songs have received a certification since its introduction? I really don't listen to any other Latin artist, I mean I do have several on my iPod but I rarely hear those, not to say that I don't know any others, 'cause at family parties (you know how we get lol) I am exposed to what everyone (us Hispanics) listen to, but I haven't gravitated to any Latin artist like the way I am with Selena, why you ask? Best, jona talk to me 23:53, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
When you said you didn't just want to work on Selena, I thought there were other Latin artists you listened to. So far, there's only been four songs that got a Latin single certification ( Odio (song), Darte un Beso, Pegaito Suavacito, and Porque les Mientes). I'm surprised Bailando by Enrique Iglesias hasn't been certified yet. It's best-selling Latin digital song of the year so far (221,000 downloads!). Two more things I should mention. I have access to articles for Highbeam and Questia so I'll take requests for articles for any of them if you need any. In other news, I started a WikiProject Pop music and proposing WikiProject Latinos to be merged with WikiProject United States on the Council talk page. Erick ( talk) 00:02, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Oh, well I can work anywhere lolz. I'm seeing a pattern that most of those songs are Prince Royce, I'm guessing they are focusing on one artist at a time? Latin music has really gone downhill, that seems so little for a Latin artist (in my opinion) Well the two you just gave me are in Spanish and I can't read Spanish (shocker) lolz let alone can even understand it! So if you can do a search for Enamorada de Ti would be grateful. I thought WP:Pop music was already created? Best, jona talk to me 00:15, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

You know, now that you mention it, the Latin music industry hasn't been too well lately. Nowadays, a Latin album is lucky to even surpass 100,000 copies (hence the RIAA lowering it again), whereas in the 90's, a popular Latin album could go platinum for a million copies like nothing. Most of my music consists of pop/tropical music from the 80's to early 00's (btw, only Darte un Beso is from Prince Royce). These days, I still stick to tropical music, but it's mainly populated by bachata music and mambo music. Salsa's been down, except for Marc Anthony and Victor Manuelle of course. I could a search some time and I think you'll go glad to know they charts although it's only Mexico City ( WP:SINGLENETWORK allows artists who has strong nationality ties to have charts one vendor if no other appropriate chart can be found for the country). Strangely enough, a WikiProject for pop music never existed until I proposed it a few months. Erick ( talk) 00:27, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

That sucks bad, but the good news is that Latin music isn't the only music industry to see a decline in sales, because of the rise of the Internet, music sales in general has decline significantly. The fact that only one (Adele, I believe) has a diamond certification for the 2010s decade, compared to the 80s and 90s where several artists received one, validates the fact that music sales aren't so good. Although I wouldn't agree to having a charts/certs for illegal downloading of individual artists, a database of this report would be greatly appreciative especially that it could be used to determine what damages it causes for those artists. I still want to do a big Latin music-related project that is top priority for the WP:Latin music project, where most or all of us actively work on. I made that proposal a year or so ago, but no one seemed interested lolz. I think working in groups/teams on projects as big as getting Latin American music, Styles of Latin music, etc, to FA status is awarding and better than working alone, which can take longer than a year to complete by yourself. But everyone has their own thing they want to do. Btw, what's your long time goal for WP:Latin music? Like do you have a project in mind that would take longer than usual if worked alone? Best, jona talk to me 00:53, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
According to an article I read on Billboard, Latin music albums have been hit the hardest. Something big eh? I added some on information Latin American music on the lead, but it's something that'll need dedicated WikiProjects, plus it has French-speaking countries/territories which aren't covered by the Latin music project. How about Tejano music? You've already done articles for the Tejano music awards and Selena played a huge part of the music genre. Or maybe Latin American music in the United States? Erick ( talk) 01:05, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
You know what I just thought about, an article devoted to the decline in Latin music as it pertains to illegal downloading. But I don't think there's enough research conducted to warrant its own article (a subsection of it in those articles you mentioned, however, should be included). I wouldn't mind working on any of those you pointed out, just don't wanna work alone :/ jona talk to me 01:11, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Probably that would go best under either Latin music in the United States or Latin music (genre). I want to know how much the Latin music represents in the US marketplace too. I know that Universal Music Latin Entertainment has the largest share in the Latin marketplace. You know, it's weird now to think that Universal Music Group now owns the rights to Selena's songs. Erick ( talk) 01:16, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I'll add that to my to do list. I just did a scholarly search for "Latin music decline" and there were a few books that discussed the topic, briefly though. With the resources from my college, I think I can find research articles conducted on the decline in Latin music sales, so I can add a subsection to one of those articles. I know, since they acquired her songs they haven't released any posthumous albums like EMI Latin did, thank god lolz. But hopefully they can come up with better ideas like a follow up to Enamorada de Ti or dig up some of her unreleased songs her family has, there's so much potential. EMI Latin just added the same songs but with a different picture smh! Her 20th anniversary is coming up, can you believe it? Fingers crossed for another Selena ¡VIVE!, I so want to go if they do one. Best, jona talk to me 01:27, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Don't you mean Capitol Latin? ;) I learned that EMI Latin went through a major restructure in late 2009 and renamed itself Capitol Latin. I was thinking the same thing earlier. I have faint memories of Selena singing when I was very little before she was murdered. UMLE will probably just release new greatest hits or her put songs in a various artists compilation album. Erick ( talk) 01:33, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Same thing haha. Wow impressive, I was barely three when she was killed, if it wasn't for my mother who was obsessed with her around that time, I wouldn't be even that interested in her (I'm a mamma's boy) lolz. Ugh, hopefully not! I wanna go for my masters in marketing, one of my top goals for that degree is to head her marketing department because it sucks ass haha. Best, jona talk to me 20:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

I can see it now. A song by Selena featured on UMLE's greatest Latin hits of the 90's. The only other female Tejano singer I thought was really good in the 90's after Selena's death was Alicia Villareal when she was with Grupo Limite. Erick ( talk) 23:21, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

They already released one several weeks ago (Tejano Divas). I think its pointless to release so many greatest hits album if they are all the same that were previously released. But again its just for money. So I see WP:Latin music is semi-active now? Where did everyone go? jona talk to me 01:42, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Do you want to go ahead and nominate the Billboard Hall of Fame FL? I kind of get tired of waiting for the DYK review and I learned you don't have to wait for the DYK to finish before nominating it FL. Erick ( talk) 01:05, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Sure, go right ahead and nominate it, I believe its FL-ready. Best, .jona talk 01:08, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Me and Jose are thinking about working on Celia Cruz's biography while getting help from Today's article for improvement. Would you like to join us? Erick ( talk) 17:05, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
I definitely wanna join the fun. When do you guys plan on nominating it there? Best, .jona talk 21:02, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

The improvements for Celia Cruz has been halted until I take care of that thing. In the meantime, could you do another search for when Billboard decides to induct someone into the Hall of Fame? Erick ( talk) 20:21, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

I can't believe everyone was opposed to the name change. I'll weigh in at the talk page tomorrow. Best, .jona talk 21:55, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Maybe it isn't my place to say this but, some of the articles tagged like " Buenos Amigos" and " Donde Quiera Que Estes" under the Regional Mexican task force don't really make sense given neither of them are a Regional Mexican song. I'm assuming, of course, that the purpose of the Regional Mexican task force is to cover recordings that fall under the Regional Mexican genre not simply because the artist is one. In the meantime, I've also done some tagging for the task force including the GAs. Erick ( talk) 04:05, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh ( J Milburn) and Ed ( The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason ( Sturmvogel 66) and Christine ( Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian ( Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your GA nomination of Enamorada de Ti (song)

The article Enamorada de Ti (song) you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Enamorada de Ti (song) for comments about the article. Well done! An update on the Latin Music Hall of Fame

So The Rambling Man made some interesting suggestions for the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame. I agree with adding a description and I'm actually considering withdrawing the nominations so we can revamp the list and prose per the FLC suggestions but I wanted to know if that's okay with you or if you intend making the changes together now. Cheers! EDIT: Oh yeah, and I have opened a FAC for Romance (Luis Miguel album). If you have the time, could you please have a look and leave a comment on the FAC? Erick ( talk) 06:29, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for not being as active as I should be. I haven't been monitoring the nomination :( but I do have it on my watchlist. I doubt we need to revamp everything, I mean it's only two paragraphs lolz. But if you feel that we should look at it more closely and such then yes I'll agree to the withdrawing and we can work through it. Congrats on the nomination! I'll give my review either tonight or tomorrow. Best, .jona talk 20:42, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Well as you can see on the nominations, two editors have pointed out how the prose seems to make the list pointless. I'm favor of adding a description parameter for the list. And I look forward to the review! :) Erick ( talk) 00:52, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Diamond awards!

Thanks again for review Romance. BTW, Remember that time you showed me a picture of Dreaming of You and Amor Prohibido being Diamond certified but I wasn't sure if it was from the RIAA? It turns out, it is! =D On an unrelated note, all the Lo Nuestro award ceremonies articles have made and it has most of the nominations for each one. Erick ( talk) 09:08, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Again sorry for taking too long to do a review. So what new details does the diamond certification provides that the multi-platinum certification doesn't provide (since it says 35.00 which is what it is anyways right? it is 3.5x platinum). Great, I mean there's so much FL's the WP:Latin music community can do with the Latin Grammy's lolz. Best, .jona talk 16:42, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Well I created a category for albums listed at the Diamante awards since there's a category for the Diamante awards since there's one for Diamond awards too. There were some Lo Nuestro nominees Selena got that weren't mentioned on her awards list so I added them for you. I don't know if I already had mentioned that. Erick ( talk) 22:44, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
I see what you mean, so if a Latin album ships 600k its considered a diamond. Tbh, RIAA should have a diamond award for Latin albums that ships at least 5 million (10 million for standard), but hey whatever floats their boat. Thanks for the additions! Best, .jona talk 00:51, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
More like, it just needs 10x Platinum since the 600,000 diamond is for albums certified after December 2013. I think it's a recent award because I have never seen it before. Erick ( talk) 01:02, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Ones (album) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Ritchie333 -- Ritchie333 ( talk) 13:00, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Sorry I've been so slow on the uptake. Normally I like to sit down and spend 1-2 hours uninterrupted to carefully read an article while reviewing it, but for one reason or another, real life and other stuff has intervened this week, plus I keep getting distracted on other articles. I will make a point to finish this off over the weekend - I don't think there'll be much to comment on and my gut feeling is that it's not far from meeting the GA criteria as is. More news soon. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:47, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
That's alright and understandable. I am in no rush. Best, .jona talk 15:46, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

AJona1992,

It has been brought to my attention that an article you created " List of Selena concert tours" only cites 1 reference and the link is dead. Please consider adding some reliable references.

Good luck! Figureskatingfan ( talk · contribs), Miyagawa ( talk · contribs) and Sturmvogel 66 ( talk · contribs)

That's alright and understandable. I am in no rush. Best, .jona talk 15:46, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
