Thank you very much

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   11:12, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Bringing Mississippi special election article to FAC

Hey Spirit! Thanks again for helping out with the GAN for Mississippi's 4th congressional district special election, 1981. I think it's probably the most thorough article I've ever written and it's the first time I've ever considered bringing an article to FAC. Do you have any further suggestions or details that you think need to be added to meet WP:FACR? Nomader ( talk) 00:30, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Nomader. I think you've written a strong article, although I was able to spot a couple of issues. Keep in mind that I have no experience with featured articles, so I may not be the most authoritative reviewer. Regardless, I hope this is helpful :

  • To pass a FA review, your article needs to be representative of the relevant literature. This requirement was added because someone once nominated an article on the assassination of Lincoln that had almost no book sources. Here, most of your sources are regional newspapers. I would suggest adding some book sources to the article. For example, this book contains a good paragraph on the election, while this book has some nice coverage of both the race and the role of African-Americans in the election.
    • Finding these books may be a bit of a pain if you’re not near a major library. There should be some Wikipedia programs that will assist, and the Internet Archive allows people to “check out” around 600,000 books still under copyright here.
  • The article should have a bit more detail on the role African-Americans had in Dowdy’s victory. While you mention this in the article, there are quite a few sources that study this in-depth.
  • What happened with the WAPT debate? A bit more detail here would be helpful.

Spirit of Eagle ( talk) 02:26, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll be sure to make the edits before taking it to FAC. Also-- thanks again for such a thorough review, it was really terrific stuff. If you ever find a free photo of Liles Williams, be sure to let me know! Nomader ( talk) 04:37, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I couldn’t find a suitable image of Liles. I seriously doubt there’s anything available on the internet, since Liles is an obscure, living figure who flourished during a time in which all photographs are still under copyright law. I’d make a request at Wikipedia:Reward board, and hope for the best. Anyways, good luck with the FAC nomination. If you want a final check-through of the article once you’ve added all the book sources you found, please feel free to drop me a line . Spirit of Eagle ( talk) 04:22, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
I actually found one from more recently on his time in the board here ( [1]), but I can't for the life of me find the copyright information for Mississippi state officials and looking at elected officials' pages, seems like they're all under copyright. And will do on the check, thanks so much again for all your help! Nomader ( talk) 14:05, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
I've added relevant literature to the article and fleshed it out-- let me know what you think. Thanks so much again for all the help here! Nomader ( talk) 17:26, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Ok, I've started reviewing the article. Spirit of Eagle ( talk) 23:46, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Just saw this-- thank you so much for being so thorough. I'll be making a copy into my Userspace and working on it from there. Really appreciate it. Nomader ( talk) 23:25, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Wanted to thank you again for your edits-- I've made all your changes sans the debate (I really can't find any more details about it, incredibly frustrating). I did also significantly add to the lead, but figure that it's the part that needs the most feedback. Lemme know if you have any additional comments, and thank you so, so much again for all of your work with me on this article. I couldn't have gotten any luckier with my reviewer here. Nomader ( talk) 05:39, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

I'm very glad I could help. This was a really interesting article, and you've done some incredible work that you should be proud of. I checked over your changes, and the only problem I found was that the "Barone & Ujifusa 1988, p. 653." source doesn't link back to the Almanac of American Politics. Everything else looked good. I also think that your lead does a much better job of summarizing the main article. Going forward, I would recommend having someone experienced with the FAC process check the article over. I'm very good at working with rules and guidelines, but there are bound to be some issues that only someone with experience can highlight and help you with . Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thongvan Fanmuong

Hello. I just noticed that you closed this deletion discussion – [3] – a minute after I had posted a response to one of the commentators in the article — [4]. I believe the AFD merits further discussion and the ideal response ought to have been a re-list which would have allowed it to run for another week. Can you please reconsider your non-admin closure and re-list the discussion instead? — Nearly Headless Nick {c} 04:55, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

I've re-opened the AfD so there is a smidge of time to address this last minute issue. However, I don't feel comfortable relisting since this does look like a pretty clear keep, even with this last issue up in the air . Spirit of Eagle ( talk) 05:04, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
That the deletion discussion should be closed as "keep" is not that obvious (although it does seem to be heading in that direction), given that Jackqe and AuthorAuthor do not make policy-based arguments. In any case, thank you for re-opening it and allowing it some more time. — Nearly Headless Nick {c} 05:11, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Why can't I get a WikiYanny >:(

I started the edit war, why is User:7_qz the only one who gets a WikiYanny >:(((( InvalidOS talk 17:46, 10 April 2019 (UTC)`

@ Spirit of Eagle:, it appears you didn’t read my html comment, because you would’ve found this:

The Surreal Barnstar
You've done some really funny things on April Fools' Day. Have this barnstar that is also invisible on your talk page. InvalidOS talk 17:46, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

It’s no longer invisible. InvalidOS talk 11:14, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Wow, thank you! I completely missed that. Looks like I should probably check my HTML a bit more frequently; there might be even more hidden barnstars! Spirit of Eagle ( talk) 05:04, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
