It's underused because, in my estimation, adding it as a standard transclusion to infoboxes (as suggested) is not needed. However, that's not a reason to delete it; there are pages where it could be useful.

Propose mergingTemplate:Cite GREC with
Template:GEC.
They cover the identical source, the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana. GEC has
14 mainspace inlinks and is more recent (but no doc); GREC has 17 (and iffy doc). My preference is that the merged name be 'Cite GEC' (and that all such wrappers should start with 'Cite'; they are
so much easier to find when they do).
Mathglot (
talk) 21:15, 26 March 2024 (UTC)reply
I created Cite GREC and I have no objections because they cover the same source. That said, calling other volunteers' well-intentioned work "iffy" is not nice, even if it really is iffy.
I beg your pardon. I'm aware of different priorities for getting a valuable template available for others to use, where a volunteer editor may not have the time to also document it, and I value your contribution. Possibly my alter ego as a template-documentation gnome makes me more critical on documentations issues than I ought to be. I apologize; no offense intended.
Mathglot (
talk) 08:42, 27 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Merge as creator of the GEC template. I didn't know that Cite GREC existed; I think I created the latter template as a copy of the Spanish template to aid with copy/paste translations, but it appears to be redundant. I agree that the resulting template should be called "Cite GEC" (not GREC). –

Navbox only contains three blue links, not enough to warrant the existence of this template for navigation purposes. Eagles24/7(C) 17:55, 26 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Keep. Not sure of / if there's a policy specific on this(?), but generally it seems fine to me to have navboxes when there's multiple links, especially of this type; coach navboxes like this are very useful IMO, both to editors and I'd think those who want to know more about the coaching history of their programs (as its often the only place to find it). NENAN is an essay. Not to mention it is almost certain there could be more bluelinks made if the redlinks are created.
BeanieFan11 (

Keep; now has four blue links; part of a class of established navbox templates.
Woodensuperman,
WP:NENAN may be reasonable argument for a one-off navbox, not certainly not for a member of a highly-structured and well-established class of navboxes like this one.
Jweiss11 (
talk) 20:00, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
That's nonsense. Just because similar well populated navboxes exist, doesn't mean all navboxes of the same topic should. Templates with just three or four active links are routinely deleted even if they are part of an established class of navbox. --
woodensuperman 20:03, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Woodensuperman, you're misunderstanding what I said. Insufficient number of blue links is a reasonable argument to delete such a navbox that is part of an established class. WP:NENAN is not applicable.
Jweiss11 (

Jweiss11 (

Wouldn't the proper course of action then be to withdraw this nomination, AfD those articles, and then renominate this template if those articles are deleted?
Jweiss11 (
talk) 16:51, 1 April 2024 (UTC)reply
WP:NAVBOX states "Good navboxes generally follow most or all of these guidelines". You've applied the five criteria rigidly and without regard for standard, long-established practices withing American sports topic areas. Per guideline #4; should
List of Rockford Regents football coaches exist? We have lots of analogous lists for sub-Division I teams; see
Category:Lists of college football head coaches.
Rockford Regents football should certainly be an article with a section about the program's head coaching history, to which the list could redirect for sure. Per guideline #3, (articles should refer to each other, to a reasonable extent), I would think a well developed bio article of a coach may mention his predecessor or successor for a given role.
Calvin Toliver mentions
J. T. Zimmerman. The Zimmerman article mentions
Jim Schroeder. Thus the Rockford Regents navbox here doesn't fail #3 any more than say
Template:Green Bay Packers head coach navbox does.
Matt LaFleur, a fairly well-developed article, only mentions
Vince Lombardi of the other Packers head coaches, and would probably never have any reason to mention
Lisle Blackbourn. As for #5, the "see also" guideline, in the absence of the navbox, would an editor link to many of these articles? Perhaps? I can say for sure that navboxes like this one obviate the need for succession boxes, which are essentially structured "see also" elements. So, it's not even clear that this navbox really fails the guidelines.

Don't people read articles anymore? Surely the information should be at
George_Fox_Bruins_football#List_of_head_coaches before it is in a navbox. And that's where you can see the data in context. Also,
WP:WTAF, redlinks in navboxes should not be used to create articles. --
woodensuperman 16:51, 27 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Then it should be at the article. Add the information there. Navboxes are for linking between
WP:EXISTING articles. The Wikiproject is abusing navboxes by using them in this way. --
woodensuperman 08:45, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
No its not. Per the link you just cited, Red links should normally be avoided unless they are very likely to be developed into articles. Red links can be retained in navigation templates that represent a well-defined and complete set of data. This meets both of those; the articles are likely to be developed (especially with the article creation campaign; improving the encyclopedia is not "abusing navboxes"), and these represent a well-defined and complete set of data that we would not want to lose.
BeanieFan11 (
talk) 15:11, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Perhaps the odd red is okay when the majority of the links are blue, but that clearly isn't the case here, a couple of blue links in a whole sea of red. It's not providing a navigation function, the sole purpose of a navbox. --
woodensuperman 15:44, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
I still think it provides worth for navigation, e.g. if I was a reader, and if I was looking up Chris Casey (current coach) and wanted to know, "are there any other George Fox coaches with articles", I'd look at the navbox and find Earl Craven. And I'd also be informed of the rest of the team's coaching history. Perhaps the odd red is okay when the majority of the links are blue, but that clearly isn't the case here – I'm not seeing any policy stating that? All that is required is that (a) there is a good probability of the coaches getting articles – which there is, due to the coach article campaign, that exists because of these useful navboxes, or (b) it is a complete set of well-defined data that we want to have – also check.
BeanieFan11 (
talk) 16:04, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Per
WP:REDNO: Red links may be used in navboxes which also contain links to existing articles, but they cannot be excessive. Editors who add excessive red links to navboxes are expected to actively work on building those articles, or the links may be removed from the template. This is excessive, and you are not actively working on the articles. --
woodensuperman 19:58, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply
BeanieFan11 hasn't added any red links, nor has he made any edits to this navbox.
Thetreesarespeakingtome is responsible for all the this navbox's content. He created

Keep. This template has three blue links in its body, represents "a well-defined and complete set of data" per
Wikipedia:Navigation template, and is a member of a structured and long-standing class of templates. At the very least, this template should be draftified/userfied.

Woodensuperman,
WP:NENAN may be reasonable argument for a one-off navbox, not certainly not for a member of a highly-structured and well-established class of navboxes like this one.
Jweiss11 (

That's nonsense. Just because similar well populated navboxes exist, doesn't mean all navboxes of the same topic should. Templates with just three or four active links are routinely deleted even if they are part of an established class of navbox. --
woodensuperman 20:03, 28 March 2024 (UTC)reply

He created
Chris Casey (American football) as well as bio articles for hundreds of others college football coaches in recent months. That beings said, this navbox needs more blue links or else it should be draftified.

There are only two blue links that lead to individual articles, the rest link to article sections or are redirects because they were deemed non-notable. Eagles24/7(C) 17:41, 26 March 2024 (UTC)reply

Draftify/userfy. This template has only one blue link in its body now, but represents "a well-defined and complete set of data" per
Wikipedia:Navigation template, and is a member of a structured and long-standing class of templates. More linked articles will likely be created in the future.

This is not a good subject for a navbox, this is list content masquerading as a navbox. --
woodensuperman 16:23, 26 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Keep – Still useful for navigating between metropolitan area articles, but the navbox does need work; I suggest adding populations and slimming it down to the top 50. SounderBruce 23:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Navboxes are for navigation, not information. Adding populations would make it even more like an article! --
woodensuperman 02:35, 27 March 2024 (UTC)reply
Delete This is just a list that can go on article space and clutters articles at the bottom if they already have many navboxes already. --

I am the user who created this module. That plan sounds good to me, as I am not actively developing it anymore. If I ever decide to work on it again it will be preserved in my sandbox.
